I quite like the idea of being able to take your breath away.Samantha realized then that she was in trouble. There genuinely was something about this man that took her breath away. It both scared and thrilled her at the same time. Then kiss me and see if it happens again, she whispered. There's a wicked attraction between Special Wolf Alpha Team (SWAT) werewolf Trey Duncan and medical examiner Samantha Mills, but Trey's never worked up the nerve to ask her out until now. But the trouble with wolves is that they're never far from danger, and this time Trey is going up against a monster the likes of which his Dallas SWAT team has never seen . . . It's going to take everything Trey and Samantha have to crack the case and protect each other.
Paige Tyler is a New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author of sexy, romantic suspense and paranormal romance. She and her very own military hero (also known as her husband) live on the beautiful Florida coast with their adorable fur baby (also known as their dog). Paige graduated with a degree in education, but decided to pursue her passion and write books about hunky alpha males and the kick-butt heroines who fall in love with them.
In Rogue Wolf, Paige Tyler brings murder, romance, action, and suspense to the twelfth book in the SWAT: Special Wolf Alpha Team paranormal romantic suspense series. Set in contemporary times in Dallas, Texas, this novel features SWAT werewolf Trey Duncan and Assistant Medical Examiner Dr. Samantha Mills.
Trey and Samantha have been attracted to each other for two years, but Trey hasn’t asked her out on a date yet. When Samantha decides to cash in on one of the favors Trey owes her for a dinner date, it seems that it will be the right time for them to talk about their true feelings for each other. However, a serial killer case and another highly unusual case tend to constantly interrupt their conversations.
Trey and Samantha are fantastic characters. While Trey is an alpha and protective, Samantha is a strong female protagonist. They balance each other well. Despite being attracted to each other, there are secrets that neither seems to get a chance to share due to the dual case load. These protagonists are definitely not boring, but will their secrets and flaws eventually doom the romance? The secondary characters are well-rounded and provide needed support and conflict, and up the stakes for the relationship. Characters from previous books in the series make appearances, but the focus is on Trey and Samantha.
The plot was complex with lots of twists and turns and the stakes were high. The significant amount of danger and action kept me fully engaged and made this a true page turner for me. The author uses a unique take on werewolves and does a good job of explaining this. This is a riveting story with protagonists that I liked and cheered on as their cases progressed and became ever more dangerous and unusual. It held my attention fully and contained the elements that I love in this genre of books. This book delivers on escapism through attraction, friendship, family, romance and love while also tackling serious issues including secrets, stressful situations, workplace politics, serial killers, PTSD, family relationships, and selfless sacrifice for others. While most conflicts and issues are resolved, there are a couple of threads that may end up in future books in the series.
Overall, it was suspenseful, full of danger, action-packed, sinister, and compulsively readable. This engaging combination delivered on the promise of its premise and opening scenes. The subplots tied together well, the main characters were strong and the ending was explosive. If you enjoy thrilling paranormal romantic suspense novels, then I recommend you check out this series. There is enough background that this novel can be read as a standalone, but the series is best read in order.
SOURCEBOOKS Casablanca and Paige Tyler provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. This is my honest review. Opinions are mine alone and are not biased in any way. Publication date is currently set for August 31, 2021. This review was originally posted at Mystery and Suspense Magazine.
Rogue Wolf by Paige Tyler SWAT (Special Wolf Alpha Team) series book 12. Paranormal wolf shifter romantic suspense. Can be read as a stand-alone but better as part of the series. Medical Examiner Samantha Mills has suspected there is more to the Dallas SWAT than just being good at their jobs. Their claims of coyotes and other strange coincidences don’t add up. SWAT member Trey Duncan knows he needs to keep his werewolf self hidden from Samantha, but what if she is his soul mate? The One?
A rollicking adventure from start to finish. Plenty of humor in the beginning leads to peril and a fight to survive a mad man. Parts are touching. Much is riveting. The full is a romping good paranormal romance. Heat mid level. A bit of a cliffhanger leading to the next series, but Samantha and Trey’s story is complete with a couple of nice humanitarian touches thrown in. I love this SWAT series and can’t wait for the next in the series.
I received a copy of this from NetGalley. I also purchased a copy to share.
Excerpts to introduce Samantha and Trey: “Dude, she deals with dead bodies every day, so you’re going to need to come up with another excuse. You’re a werewolf, not a werechicken. Just ask her to go out to dinner. What’s the worst that could happen?”
Excerpt: “Trey gave her a smile, flashing the most perfect dimples. “We’re hoping you might be able to tell us a little about the case.” Samantha had to fight the urge to return his smile. D[…], when Trey put on the charm, it was scary how badly she wanted to walk over there, climb him like a sloth, and start coming up with names for their future children. But she fought off the desire. Besides, she didn’t need to think about names. She had all four of them picked out a few days after meeting the hunky cop. No, she needed to play this cool and use the situation to get what she wanted.” Excerpts from Rogue Wolf by Paige Tyler.
Was I hooked by that book? Yes. The drool-worthy SWAT team is back, and the enemy is something out of a horror story. Compelling action, tempered by a sweet, blossoming romance.
Ah, the hunky SWAT werewolves are back with Trey and medical examiner, Samantha, as the focus. They have been dancing around their attraction for each other for a couple of years now and Samantha finally took the bull by the horns. But their courtship is troubled by new and unexpected enemies.
As usual, I really enjoyed this book just as much as all its predecessors. The plot flowed along nicely and towards the end the action picked up pace along with my heartbeat. Parts of it were a bit surreal, it wasn't just our heroes who were caught off guard with this one. And Trey and Samantha were this sweet, almost naïve, calm oasis of hope in between all the death and gore.
I can recommend this entire series to readers of paranormal romance. Plenty of steamy romance, werewolves, and suspense. It's not strictly necessary to read them in order, but I think it'll make more sense if you do.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Rogue Wolf is the twelfth installment in Paige Tyler’s SWAT (Special Wolf Alpha Team) series. Just like all of the rest, it doesn’t disappoint. Inexplicably, regardless of all of the books in this series, it has not gotten old. Another new Supernatural being has been unleashed and another werewolf finds The One. If you have no idea what that means, you have to read the entire series to really appreciate it.
This time we follow SWAT member Trey Duncan and medical examiner Samantha Mills. Trey and Samantha have been dancing around each other for the past few years. An investigation into some very strange murders forces them to work closer together and finally act upon their attraction which leads to a steamy night in bed and an intense bond that comes from being each other’s soul mate. In regards to the murders, they clearly are related to something supernatural that SWAT has yet to encounter. This also brings in characters from Paige’s other series called STAT (Special Threat Assessment Team) whose sole focus is on things that go bump in the night. I love a good crossover and this just elevates the book to the next level. Of course, the real fun lies in the fact that Samantha doesn’t know Trey’s secret although she has been secretly investigating the mystery behind his SWAT team for a while.
What else could I ask for in a series? SWAT is fun, exciting, and full of action in and out of the sheets. Trey and Samantha have great chemistry and this new supernatural twist has a Frankenstein sort of bite to it. That’s about all that I can say without giving it all away. All in all, I am looking forward to the next book in the series which I hope involves an almost human-cat named Kat.
**Received a copy of the book from the publisher and voluntarily reviewed it.**
Do you like 2008 Wattpad werewolf stories, mixed with *checks notes* Frankenstein, then boy do I have the book for you.
I really wanted to like this one because the heroine is my namesake and the whole we have been flirting for two years when are we finally going to do something about it plotline could have been so cute.
But instead we get Sam who thought it was a great idea to date Trey, despite having an entire serial killer room on him in her apartment. Her moral compass is completely out of whack. And despite the whole soul mate thing, Trey should have some more respect for himself, and not fallen in love with the woman who was using him. What a horrible relationship.
This story read more like a horror then a romance. And the flirting was so awkward and embarrassing, and when did they even fall in love? They just went from nothing to all in.
Page turner. Wow, Paige came up with an evil twist, but we understand where its coming from. The aftermath is horrific, and my heart hurt for them. The PTSD moment was sadly poignant and true in so many cases. Samantha is a strong female with her own secrets. Tyler was not in your face alpha as so many shifter stories are. You see him question, his doubts and it just makes you want him more. I am not sure whats going on with Conners cat there are so many ways Paige could take this. Hmm. Fast read, suspense, page turner, steamy romance, and heart wrenching scenes. Thank you Sourcebooks Casablanca, Netgalley and Paige Tyler for a wonderful read. I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions.
Trey and Samantha were great together and I'd rank this SWAT book as one of my favorites in the series. The story was packed full of action and romance which made it hard to lay down. Several of the other characters captured my attention too. Will we hear more from Kyson and Shayla? Will Zane and Alyssa be okay and what's up with Connor and his cat? Paige Tyler really knows how to keep me coming back for more. A real winner for paranormal romance fans!
I wasn't sure how this one was going to work out, both Trey and Samantha were hiding things from each other. Trey being a werewolf made sense, but Samantha and her quest to figure out what the heck was going on, seemed like it could cause all kinds of issues. Sadly that really never came to anything because things turned banana pants crazy towards the end. I could tell you, but not knowing and finding out as you read is half the fun. To say that things were weird is an understatement and I honestly wasn't sure how things would resolve, but they did, in about the best way that they could considering everything. I liked that when Samantha learned Trey was a werewolf there was so much other crap going on that it rated so low. The ending was good, glad to see that those that needed help got it and glad to see that Samantha was welcomed into the pack with open arms.
Finally, Trey and Samantha's story! As a follower of the series since its beginning, I can't tell you how excited I was to learn that Trey would finally have his own book. Throughout the series I have gotten to know Trey and was looking forward to him finally having his own book, especially since he's been crushing on Samantha most of the time I've known him. When Trey and Samantha finally decide to go out on their first date it seems like everything is running along perfectly. Trey is drawn to Samantha and keeps wondering if she's THE ONE for him and Samantha definitely looks interested. However, Samantha is conflicted. Although attracted to Trey, she can't put aside her curiosity about the secret the Dallas SWAT team is hiding. With each moment spent with Trey she struggles with her feelings for him and what he will think once her secret comes out. There were moments where I wanted to shake some sense into the girl and questioned her loyalty, but in the end she redeemed herselfcand all was good. 😃
I enjoyed Samantha and Trey's story. Although their connection was slow to develop, the author made sure that in the end their connection was fully established. Through flirty banter, candid conversations and steamy moments, Trey and Samantha's romance became more viable. It helped a lot that the author put them in situations that allowed them the chance to come clean about their intensions, the secrets they were keeping and what they were feeling. It also helped that the author did a lot of showing and very little telling when it came to Trey and Samantha's blossoming romance.
Another aspect the author decided to bring to the page to the fullest was the suspense and intrigue mixed throughout the story. Although I was able to figure out the key players behind the killings as soon as the first clue was given, the whole serial killer vibe had me engaged and anticipating what was to come. But knowing who was behind it didn't lessen my surprise when I learned how it was being done. Well played, Paige Tyler. Well played, indeed. That was some screwed up stuff right there.
As always, I enjoyed visiting with the SWAT team members and getting an update of some of my favorites. This series continues to intrigue me and I can't wait to see whose story is coming up next.
All in all, a fantastic addition to the series and a fun, action-packed, thrilling ride.
ARC kindly given by Netgalley for voluntary review. All opinions are my own.
Trey Duncan is a member of the SWAT, a team of werewolves, in search of a serial killer who dumps body parts in various places. He and his teammates believe they are dealing with a supernatural.
Samantha Mills is the assistant medical examiner who is also assigned to the case. She and Trey have been flirting and dancing around each other for 2 years and now asks Trey on a date. She's always had a feeling that there is someting more to Trey than meets the eye. She's been present to all their former cases and even has a whole file of all the team members, unbeknownst to Trey. Trey knows that Sam is 'The One', but is afraid to tell her he's a werewolf.
What follows is lots of action, heaps of gore and some sexy times.
I hope Ms Tyler gives us a story on Connor and 'Kat', there's something mysterous there! Highly recommended.
Talk about your slow burn Trey and Samantha have been dancing around each other for two years. Finally they get together in this action packed thrill ride. This is a combination of romantic suspense, scifi and crime thriller and I loved it! Trey may be a werewolf but he is as clueless as any guy when it comes down to the woman who is meant just for him. I read this in on sitting and enjoyed every page.
Uhhhhhh... WTF just happened?!?!? No really did anyone see that shit coming? Honestly... I mean I sorta had a vibe a little bit along the 2qy but really most of that 2as incomprehensible until it was actually happening... I am blown away and dying for what happens next now!
This series got more interesting when other paranormals were part of the story. I missed cameos of Gabe and his officers from earlier books though. ;-h
The series become stranger and stranger with each volume, in a good way though, as the author adds more supernatural things each time. The story is action-packed, and the love story is well written.
Dr. Samantha Wells is a medical examiner, who has noticed many discrepancies in the actions of Trey Duncan’s SWAT team in Dallas. She’s been noticing him and those pesky inconsistencies and is determined to solve the mystery that is Trey…Unfortunately, there’s also a serial killer or two (?) on the loose, leaving desiccated bodies and random body parts near dumpsters. Trey has run-ins with a supernatural being that throws him around a bit, and with a super-strong giant of a man, and realizes that it’s somehow all interconnected, and these two or more beings may be harder to stop than they think!
This book has an intriguing premise, and holds the interest of the reader. The werewolf SWAT team usually has superior strength and healing abilities, but this supernatural being leaves them in the dust! Both of these protagonists are very conflicted about certain things, but are still strongly drawn to each other. They eventually come clean about things, but it takes a while. Also, there are two important story threads left dangling, and this reader wonders if one or both will be the groundwork for the next story.
Thank you Netgalley and Sourcebooks Casablanca for the chance to read an advance copy of Rogue wolf by Paige Tyler. This is her latest book in her SWAT: Special wolf alpha team series (#12) Because I really just wanted to read something light at night I pulled this one as soon as I received it, and its perfect. While this is from SWAT, this had interaction with characters from her newest series STAT and there seem to be a slight continuation thread going on. The author seems to have moved into a new direction with SWAT (rather than just have police style stories) and I believe it would make sense to read SWAT in order, and to add her STAT series in the loop as well. SWAT werewolf Trey Duncan and medical examiner Samantha Mills couldn't stop looking at each other since the two met, but Trey's never worked up the nerve to ask her out. So when Samantha helps Trey out with a favor she says Trey owes her a date, it seems like the perfect time to confess his true feelings. But the trouble with SWAT is that they're never far from danger, and this time Trey is going up against a monster the likes of which his team has never seen. I really enjoyed the book, and read it quickly. I love Tyler's SWAT books, and have my favorite wolves. I love the chemistry her characters have, and the ongoing theme of The One. However, I do miss the simpler plots and wonder how much more complicated they will get -- but I am going to continue the ride!
Rogue Wolf (SWAT: Special Wolf Alpha Team, #12) by Paige Tyler Special Wolf Alpha Team (SWAT) werewolf Trey Duncan and medical examiner Samantha Mills a strong H and h have their story. This is quite a story there is a monster hunting Dallas - maybe more than one. So much terror, gore, mystery, the team members, Kat, laughter, angst, love, tears, edge of your seat tension and plenty of heat for their HEA. I can't wait for the next book and a new mystery to solve. Reasons I enjoyed this book: Romantic Haunting Easy-to-read Funny Tragic Great world building Tear-jerker Unpredictable Wonderful characters Steamy Scary Twisted Page-turner Entertaining Happily Ever After Action-packed
Trey Duncan is one of a very special SWAT team in Dallas, the whole team is made up of werewolves. He has fancied one of the medical examiners for a while now, but hasn't had the nerve to ask her out. A particularly nasty serial killer is on the loose. It's going to take more than ordinary cops to catch this one.
Samantha Mills has noticed some unusual happenings whenever one particular SWAT team are called in. Her curiosity just might ruin a budding friendship.
This is an action packed paranormal romantic suspense. We have some great characters, some of them you will have met in previous books in the series . You don't have to have read the others to enjoy this one, but it will tempt you to go and get some of them. The villians in this book are very scary and difficult for even someone with a werewolf's strength to overcome.
This is an intense read. It's incredibly well written and had my heart racing at times. "Vitas" are really creepy and nightmare inducing. I had a chuckle with Samantha's "climb him like a sloth" thought. While not for the faint of heart this is a really good read. I received an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley and freely leave this honest review.
I received a copy of this book directly from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Rogue Wolf by Paige Tyler was extremely well-written. The book gripped me from the very beginning with its mix of police procedural and paranormal romance. The narrative flowed easily, and though the ARC copy I read contained a few typographical errors, they didn't obstruct my enjoyment of the book. I'm sure those will be ironed out before the book's release.
I adored the characters - especially Kat, and I will certainly be looking into the rest of the series to see where that particular storyline goes. As for the main characters, their romance was both sweet and sultry, and I was cheering them on throughout. They were such fantastic characters.
If you love paranormal romances or police procedurals, I would highly recommend you check out this book - you won't be disappointed. It was a perfect mashup and a fun little twist on two popular genres that are often mutually exclusive.
Samantha is head medical examiner on the BUTCHER case. Men are turning up dead and body parts are being found. Trey is a werewolf and member of the SWAT team. He has been attracted to Samantha since he first met her but can’t work up the courage to ask her out. When they start working on the case together, Samantha cashes in her favor that Trey owes her. She knows something strange is going on with the SWAT team and is sort of obsessed about finding out what it is. Whatever that creature out there is, is something Trey and his team have never seen before.
Secrets. Sex. Shifters. And other creatures that go bump in the night. Excellent story.

Through NetGalley, I received a free copy of ROGUE WOLF (Book 12 of the SWAT: Special Wolf Alpha Team supernatural romance series) by Paige Tyler in exchange for an honest review. All of Trey Duncan’s coworkers pity him and his terrible sense of smell. Trey’s olfactory capability would be laughable for a full-on human, but his nose blindness is devastating for a werewolf. How can he find his One if he cannot smell her unique scent? Despite his inability to smell out his special gal, he’s determined to have a romantic life-even if his dates are all disasters. However, there is this one woman, medical examiner Samantha Mills, Trey has long longed for, but Trey just can’t seem to find the courage to ask her out. What if she said no? What if their date went really badly? When Samantha takes the pressure off and asks him out, Trey’s thrilled. Though, there’s one problem, SWAT is aware that Samantha suspects there’s something unusual about their activities. Is Samantha dating Trey to get closer to him or to the truth? Meanwhile, there’s a case they’re all working together involving new types of supernaturals that are stronger and faster than all of the Alpha werewolves in SWAT.
I like this book and enjoy the series. I recommend this book to fans of paranormal romance with law enforcement themes.
Trey and Samantha have been circling around each other for a while now, neither one of them making the move to ask the other one out. Samantha is a medical examiner and she knows their is something odd about the SWAT team but can't quite put her finger on it. Trey wants to ask Samantha out but he knows she doesn't quite trust his team and she is way to smart not to notice that some things are not adding up whenever his team is involved in a case.
When they do finally go out its obvious to both of them that they have something special but the question is will either of them act on it and if it will effect the case they are both currently working on. They have a killer to catch and every second that is wasted means another chance a victim will be found.
Really enjoyed this story the chemistry between the two was great and the mystery of who the killer was not obvious will make the story even better. Can't wait to read another one in this series.
Rogue Wolf was a different storyline than what I am used to in the SWAT series. We have had the pleasure of getting to know Samantha and Trey over the course of the last several books and watch them flirt and get to know one another. Besides all of the secrets they were keeping from one another, which does come out in the end, events get a little weird once everything starts coming together.
Overall I really enjoyed the story, towards the end I felt like I was reading Frankenstein, and I felt really bad for the character. I'm glad that we got to see Samantha and Trey finally fall in love and get their HEA. I wish I could write a more coherent review, however I just finished the book and I am still sitting back going, "Wow what a ride."
Received ARC in exchange for voluntary honest review from NetGalley
When it comes to stories that highlight or mention military vets, I watch it like a hawk. I do this because I am very sensitive to a negative portrayal of our soldiers who have served. This book started out as a 3 star and when a subplot brings in the plight of a military vet, this shot up to a 4 star. This story is all about Trey and how he finds his "one". It is much more than a fated mate story. There is a serial killer, new supernaturals and ulterior motives for a date.

The over the top drama is exhausting. An evil scientist, lovers who lie to each other and don’t allow the other to explain, a vampire working with the evil scientist, werewolves, conspiracy, suicide, fated mates, stalking... the list goes on. I find it so frustrating when characters don’t communicate. Like “hey... I’m going to someone’s house after potentially finding out something dangerous. Just thought someone should know.”
There’s so much contrived drama in this book. I know it’s made up but it feels forced. Did not finish at 81%. I’m done.
So far all of the prior books in this series were good, but with this one the story was borderline ridiculous and Samantha despite being a smart person was quite dense. Even at the end Samantha had not yet redeemed. I'm looking forward to Connor's story with Kat. I hope the story line makes more sense in a paranormal way.
Busting the baddies keeps the Dallas police S.W.A.T. team on their toes. Lately, a certain medical examiner has gotten all-too curious and called in one of the teams favors for a date with Trey meanwhile a bizarre serial killer case has tumbled into their laps. Paranormal Romance meets horror classic in this latest of the Special Wolf Alpha Team series.
Rogue Wolf is book 12 of a series that is optimally read in order, but could be grabbed separately in a pinch.
Medical Examiner, Samantha Mills, has been on Officer Trey Duncan's radar for some time, but unfortunately, he and the rest of the all-werewolf SWAT team has been rousing her curiosity as well. Their secret must be kept, but they still need to do their jobs under the noses of their boss, Samantha and everyone else. This gets harder whenever a case goes sideways into the supernatural realm. The serial killer they are tracking looks more and more like something that is beyond the ordinary human. The secret government organization who investigate this stuff has their hands full so leave the hunt to the werewolves. Trey splits his time between investigating and pursuing the attraction with the bright, gorgeous Samantha even while looking for the opportunity to discover if her interests are him or his werewolf secret.
Samantha knows her research curiosity into the anomalies surrounding the SWAT team cases has gone way past stalker since she has a whole room in her apartment dedicated to her secret investigation into the team. But, asking out one of the team to call in her favor to pump Trey for information has her guilt meter reacting, though not enough to stop her. Alongside her insatiable curiosity is an electrifying attraction to the man and her priorities are definitely shifting. Just when she realizes what is the most important thing, her work on the case takes her into a nightmarish situation no one saw coming.
Rogue Wolf was another fab entry in the series. I loved Trey and the suspense side was riveting. Samantha was not an early sell for me. It wasn't until much later that I could cautiously decide I could root for her. Being curious was one thing, but using a guy was quite another especially since the 'anomalies' she was investigating in Trey and the other SWAT members were all for good reasons and did no harm. She had no reason to lie and use Trey and she went way over the line with one of her stunts.
Because of that issue of secrets, the romance took a while for me to get into it. Aside from the secrets, this pair was a perfect fit and the author wrote some lovely date scenes and the couple having good conversation. The burn of attraction built and they scratched that itch fairly early though not absurdly so. I would have wished for them to have all secrets out on the table before they went there and slid into an early relationship, but I wasn't utterly disappointed for them to get together when they did.
The police investigation was of a serial killer who soon proved to be some sort of supernatural. In fact, they ended up having two cases to investigate. I spotted one of the villains fairly early for no other reason than that the person gave me a bad vibe even though they hadn't done anything. Later there were some surprising twists and a few cool reveals to lead up to an explosive climax scene that was satisfyingly action-packed.
The book ends Trey and Samantha's story satisfactorily and leaves things on an ominous note for another team and their investigation that was taking place parallel to the events of this book in another location. Can't wait to see what is up with that situation.
All in all, this was easy-read, exciting and sexy. Those who enjoy their paranormal romance with a strong dose of suspense should definitely give this series a go.
My thanks to Sourcebooks Casablanca for providing an eARC to be read in exchange for an honest review.
