For days, Chris Tatsu has been plagued by bizarre dreams of gargoyles, magic, and the ghost of his sister. Shaken, he tries to brush them off, desperate to finish his last college final and move on with his life. "Magic isn't real," or so he reminds himself every single morning.
And then the dreams come true, thrusting him into a 4,000 year old conflict between the Sentinels, guardians of a mystical Barrier surrounding Earth, and the Babylonian demigod Nabu, who seeks to dismantle the Barrier. If Nabu succeeds, magic will return to the Earth for the first time in millennia, bringing chaos and monsters of old back.

There's also a fair bit of hiking, exploring new places, checking out museums and zoos. Oh and writing. A lot of writing.

Sorry, I hate to DNF, but at 44% I just have to stop. I always appreciate a free book, and I generally enjoy sci-fi/fantasy of all types. So thank you to Goodreads for the giveaway, but this book really isn't very good. The writing is unsophisticated. The main character is insufferable. His internal monologue is whiny, bratty, and immature. The other characters don't come across much better and almost every character interaction reads like a kid playing with action figures making them talk the way children think adults talk... but adults don't actually talk that way or relate to each other like that. The premise was interesting but I just couldn't make myself continue to read this book, every page felt like a chore.
