Based in Orange County, California, I’m often in an oversized sweater drawing, writing, and enjoying some video games.
I received my BA in molecular & cellular biology from Harvard University and a MS in computer science from the University of Chicago. For many years, I worked in healthcare and then tech, before serendipity and passion took me along for a creative pivot.
Because of my experience in different industries and experiences, I’ve been able to see many perspectives. In my storytelling, I love to combine my personal memories along with diverse life experiences and thoughtful messages for both kids and adults alike.
If popular culture and literature have taught me anything, it's that encounters with magical goblets never bode well for anyone. Just ask Cedric Diggory. Or Blackbeard the Pirate (of Pirates of the Caribbean fame). Or that bad dude from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade who, apparently, "Chose...poorly." I don't recall the guy's name, but I remember what happened to him...and trust me when I say it was NOT pretty. One could even make a case for Vizzini, who fell victim to a classic (and fatal) blunder despite his so-called superior wit (). And, of course, there was Thanos...as another Goodreader so pointed out to me.
So dealings with Magical Cups = Bad News (uni)Bears.
Which is why I was so concerned about Squash and Ginny and their most recent quest. An unlimited snack potion is one thing. But a magical goblet? Tread with extreme caution, my feline friends... But I shouldn't have worried, though. Fortunately, this particular Goblet of Infinity falls into the category of Exception rather than Rule. This IS Cat & Cat Adventures, after all.
True to form, Cat & Cat #2 focuses on Friendship and Helping Others, but it also introduces such concepts as Acceptance and Forgiveness and not judging others based on rumors. Readers meet new friends and are reunited with old ones from the previous book. And of course there's the Happily Ever After...with snacks, of course.
Quite possibly, this second book is even more adorable than the first. A feat I didn't think was possible. I'd even go as far to say it has even more Cute Vibes than The Tea Dragon Society, which I didn't even think was possible (TDS being, in my eyes, the epitome of adorable and the standard to which I measure all other Potential Cute Books against). In short...I loved it! And I want to live in Squash and Ginny's world. And I hope there's a third book soon, because the world needs it. *I* need it.
p.s. A side note: I love that Squash is a male calico and Ginny is a female ginger (not sure if anyone else noticed that, but in the world of feline genetics, both are pretty rare)
I so wanted to love this because much of it is adorable and magical and I appreciate that we see lessons in reevaluating your point of view based on new information, apologizing, and forgiveness. However, on the other hand, it's also just so frustratingly simplistic in the ecological message. Big cities = bad for nature. We have to shut down the power to the city because it is draining the magic powers. No consideration of what to do once that power is shut down, what about all the good people living in the city that now are without power, possibly now homeless, jobless...? Yes, this is a children's book and all the nuances of adult government and policies shouldn't come into play here... but this was so simplistic I don't think it's really presenting an effective call to action or helping children become the critical thinkers who will have to help solve these very complex and troubling issues that face humanity and our precious planet. We can't simply stop all cars, all factories, all consumption of natural resources... we can't simply go around arbitrarily turning of everything we deem harmful. I feel the author's heart is in the right place and I wouldn't be opposed to reading other books in the series, but this was a miss for me, unfortunately.
The adorable, whimsical world of Cat & Cat Adventures is back for another turn. Once again, we have humor and magic, along with modelling of helpfulness and kindness to others--including those we do not know. Young readers also get a lesson on apology and forgiveness when one character makes a bad choice. Cute, light, and reassuring reading for young and old cat and/or fantasy adventure fans!
this second book in the cat and cat series is so yay again! Susie makes the cutest little details in her stories, and i especially appreciate how she always has an underlying lesson to teach to the readers! in this book the lesson is that not everything is what is seems, especially if prejudices cloud the first impression, that others arw worth a second chance, and that helping those who are in need is more important than sticking to a plan. my highlight were the bullfrogs, especially the one cluthing the tiny pillow when woken up from the sleepover party! it has been such a joy to see Susie's art grow and reach a wider audience, and i am so excited for her future stories 💖
Squash and Ginny are off on their next quest to get the Goblet of Infinity. It magically gives them endless drinks which is the perfect match for their never ending snacks from book one in this series. However, it turns out that the Dragon Witch has it. Will they be able to get it?
This was a cute read with unexpected opportunities for these two felines to show integrity and kindness to others. They also didn't judge others by what was said of them, but chose to give them a chance and get to know them.
Cat & Cat Adventures: The Goblet of Infinity is the equivalent of a warm hug from your favorite, furry companion - you can't help but smile after its finished.
You can tell that the art is even more detailed and creative than its ever been; and oh boy, if you love the cute character designs in the previous book, get ready for the characters you'll meet on this adventure.
What I like most about the Cat & Cat Adventures series is the underlying current of kindness and compassion each story has had so far. I think it's a great read for its target audience because it teaches the importance of loyalty, sticking to your word, helping others and acceptance of differences as well as providing an entertaining, engaging tale of its own.
I would love to see the character dynamics be explored a bit more down the line - the last book hinged on the differences between Squash & Ginny, whereas this one has them downplays their relationship the focus changes to a new character that has a very sweet character arc of their own. It seems like the underlying theme of these books is that our differences should be embraced and welcomed (which is such an important lesson to share with this generation!); I'm sure that Susie Yi would be able to further explore this in a way that comes off as engaging and relatable to younger audiences.
I don't think younger readers will be disappointed picking up this book; it's hard not to like it!
Squash and Ginny have all the snacks they could desire thanks to their magical find in their first adventure, but they are pretty thirsty. They decide it would be great to add the Goblet of Infinity to their collection so they can also have all the drinks to go with all the snacks. They set off for where they've heard the Goblet of Infinity can be found, but it is going to be more challenging than they thought as the Goblet is now in the clutches of the Dragon Witch.
I really like how Squash and Ginny prioritize helping others in need rather than continuing on their quest. They're such sweet and helpful little questers. I also liked the resolution of this and what the two adventurers learn about jumping to conclusions based on rumors and hearsay. This is a good one for upper lower grade readers and lower middle grade readers.
Notes on content: No language issues. No sexual content. There's a dangerous situation with quicksand at one point, and a temptation on the part of another to be mean, but good triumphs. (And don't worry, the witch is a kind creature.)
I was completely captivated by this second book in the Cat and Cat Adventures series. Perfect for younger readers, I still loved the book as someone in my twenties. Squash and Ginny continue their magical adventure, making friends (and eating snacks) along the way, and in this part of their journey they face issues that hit closer to home as a reader. Will the friends help strangers? Will they do what they can to help the places they visit? Can characters admit to their mistakes and earn forgiveness? It's a very engaging story that promotes good values and problem solving. Just as impressive, the illustrations are unbelievably beautiful and detailed. The characters come alive with their expressiveness, and the art style is super cute. It is obvious that a lot of care went into the drawing. It's the sort of artwork that brings a magical quality to a story. I adore all of the new characters, especially Cinder and the tickle pups!
Susie Yi gives us another Cat&Cat Adventure with helpful kitties making new friends, using cool magic, traveling to distant lands, and eating all the yummy food! Squash and Ginny are on a quest to find the Goblet of Infinity since their fridge ran out of drinks to go with their tasty snacks. On the way, they make a new friend--or is she? Big covertors across the spirit world are polluting the environments, including the bog. Squash and Ginny promise to help clean the bog, but what about the other convertors? What can be done? VERDICT: Even with the cute illustrations, the plot is full of adventure, suspense, and teaching the importance of helping others.
I liked this installment of the series a little less than the first book. It seemed a little too environmentally conscience. "Factories are bad, they ruin the environment, we have to get rid of all of them." Yes, take care of the environment, but no, don't go crazy shutting everything down and taking away people's jobs that they use to feed their families. And I don't like when children's books oversimplify the situation in order to brainwash kids.
The illustrations caught my eye so I decided to buy it for my 6 year old. I am so happy I did!!!! He loves it so much, he reads it almost every day. He loves the characters, the story and the cute pictures. It's such a fun book. I didn't realize that there was a Book 1 so I went back to the store and bought it. He enjoyed that one too. We can't wait for the next one!
Ginny and Squash have no food and hear that the Goblet of Infinity with give them any food they want. They need to go to the Witch Dragons house which they thought would be scary but she was kind. They had a big feast there and got to take the goblet home.
My new favorite series! This time Squash and Ginny travel to another magical land to find the Goblet of Infinity and as usual along the way they make new friends. But are all of them truly friends? Great story and awesome illustrations!
Honestly? I loved. Bright colorful illustrations, whimsical, and perfectly calibrated to appeal to kids in its sheer cuteness factor. Just skirts feeling moralizing or overly heavy-handed in its messaging. And to quote a kid I work with, "this is one of the best books ever [that] we read."
Another cute story with these two cute snack happy cats. They are so helpful and helping others always comes back to help them. Cute new characters, the dust demon is adorable and I loved King Bum Bum. He's a frog with horns!
This series is just feel-good-fantasy all around. The second in this very cute series. This series is great for kids who are just learning to read, it has large font and easy words. I would recommend to all parents who are helping their kids learn to read.
