-Becoming a fashion model is nearly every girl's dream. But what happens when dreams come true?

"AT THAT MOMENT, IT HIT ME.

I was a mere mortal in a room full of demigods: actors, actresses, legends of stage and screen ... whom the rest of the world had pined for, had paid to know the secrets of. Here I was ... cavorting with twenty-first century royals.

Eighteen-year-old shy, suburban aspiring model Catherine Watson longed for adventure, for a life less ... ordinary and moves away to pursue her modeling dream in New York City. When she is "discovered" by the hottest fashion designer in the pages of Vogue magazine, "Cat" thinks she has it all as the New York fashion world's new "It" girl.

Her life is thrust into an alternate universe, where star-studded cocktail parties, casting calls, go-sees, and nightclub openings revolve around her like constellations and she tries to play the part. Her former self, "Catherine," was now a shadow of who she was, and what she was becoming. Leaving her good-girl image behind, Cat quickly learns things aren't always what they seem on the catwalk, and she's faced with a decision that will change her life forever.

Drawing on her own experiences as a model in the fast-paced fashion industry, author Nicole Gabor masterfully weaves a timeless story of self-discovery, coming of age, and the perils of first loves.

Everyone talks about the glamour of being a model: the endless parties, the luxury lifestyle, the FANS - but hardly anyone talks about the dark side that comes along with all the perks. This book follows young Cat (bonus points for the ‘Cat’walk pun), who moves to NYC to become the next ‘It Girl’. Suddenly she finds herself thrust into the world of eating disorders, drugs and much, much worse. This extremely gripping book will break your heart in many ways as you see how this industry preys on girls as young as 13. My favourite quote from this book is when Cat questions her friend about why no one stops the advances of sleazy old men and asks “Are we prostitutes?”, to which Cat’s friend replies “No, we wear better clothes.” If you’re an aspiring model and want to go into the industry or if you loved the Bollywood movie ‘Fashion’, this is the book for you.

“I was sick of following the rules”.

What teenage girl hasn’t dreamed of chucking it all in - college, suburbia, ( and parents), and heading for a new beginning in the bright lights of NYC. Catherine (Cat) Watson, 18 years old, wants to be someone new - a fashion model - and is ready to take her best shot at getting there.

“A place where I could reinvent myself to become anything, anyone, if only I could beak free of my own fears”.

Cat’s world soon becomes a blur of desperate dreams and photo shoots, overlaid with parties, cocktails, glamour, excitement, new loves, and travel. A whole new world, much of it not at all what Cat was expecting, beckons, and before long, Cat finds herself swept up in a new persona with new friends, a new outlook, and a whole new life.

Told with an insiders view that reads as grimly authentic, as Cat’s world unfolds we are introduced to a sordid expose of the “real” world of modeling. Along the way, the reader can’t help but question, along with Cat, just what things actually build true happiness, and are worth fighting for, after all.

With delicious irony, (and no spoilers here!) as we near the book’s satisfying conclusion, Cat finds her way though to her own deeply-personal revelation, with an acknowledgement that ends up ringing true on several levels.

“(My) vapid beauty saved me”.

You will need to read this lovely book to find out more.

A great big thank you to the author and the publisher for an ARC of this book. All thoughts presented are my own.

CW: this book contains sexual abuse, substance abuse, alcoholism, disordered eating and body shaming.

Eighteen-year-old Catherine longs for an exciting life, far away from her ordinary suburban reality. Her wish is granted when, after moving to New York City, she's discovered by one of the greatest fashion designers around. Almost overnight, sensible, shy Catherine leaves the stage to glamorous, "It Girl" Cat. But as she starts moving through parties, casting calls and fashion shows, Cat slowly realises that not everything on the catwalk is as it appears and fame comes at a high cost.

Catwalk is an engaging read offering an interesting look at the fashion industry and what happens once the shiny veil is lifted. The author herself has past experience as a model and this certainly shows in the detail in which she can paint the industry, its glamour and its dark side alike.

Cat herself is a compelling main character and I loved seeing her development arc. At the beginning of the book, she's a fairly typical eighteen-year-old, looking to find her place in the world and falling for the sparkle of the fashion industry. Once she reaches the top of the industry, however, Cat is forced to confront reality and the (often) non-airbrushed, ugly truth of being rich and famous. Cat is admirable in the way she questions her new life and her own morality, trying to decide just who she is and, just as importantly, who she wants to be. Her growth was really satisfying, and I felt like cheering her on throughout, even as she made mistakes and tried to learn from them.

Where this otherwise good book fell incredibly short for me was in its representation of non-American characters, and the Italian characters in particular. Their representation is stereotypical at best, bordering on offensive. Almost all the Italians in this book seem either sexual predators or enablers and, after finishing this book, I can't recall a single positive Italian character disassociating from this.

In a book that is trying to provide an accurate picture of an industry, I frankly would have expected better in terms of research as well. The Italian characters here sport mostly French-sounding names and consistently speak in grammatically incorrect Italian, and there is also a reference to the non-existent Italian revolution (which I assume was supposed to be the unification). All of these could have been easily fixed with some additional research and, coupled with the negative representation, is the main reason preventing me from giving this book a higher rating.

Overall, Catwalk is an entertaining read sporting a compelling protagonist, likely to appeal to fans of contemporary YA despite its problematic representation of foreign characters.

First I just want to thank the author for providing me with a copy of this book via R&R Book Tours in exchange for my honest review.

This novel is inspired by the authors experiences living in NYC and working as a model. I didn't know this going into it so while reading it I was thinking surely this isn't really how it is. After finishing the book I read about the author and saw that it is in fact inspired by true events and I was shocked. You think modeling is this glamorous thing and then you read this and learn of the dark side of modeling. I really hope that things aren't like this in this day in age. It definitely has some triggers with drugs and alcohol as well as attempted rape as well as others. I didn't have any expectations going into this book but it immediately sucked me in and had me feeling all the emotions. I ended up giving this 4 stars because the main character Cat was very whiny in the first half of the book and that got on my nerves after a while but she eventually grows and learns from her mistakes which I loved.

Catwalk is a story of every young girls who dreams to get recognised to be a model to finally get noticed out in the world. The book talks about the modelling industry and shows you a face of the industry that has been existing since a long time. Whether east or west these issues have come up with the models. The author paints a beautiful picture of an ugly story and the narrative keeps you gripped and engaged in the book. Catherine goes on a journey of her own and though she is an eighteen year old the way she evolves in the book was also something enjoyable to witness. Catwalk gave an interesting look into the glamorous and gritty life of a supermodel. It was a pretty easy read, but definitely shared some disturbing scenes.

Meet awkward Cat, who turns out to be anything but. Really she is a dreamer that never felt like she belonged. You've got the boy-next-door, the model roomie and the bad boy boyfriend. What could possibly go wrong?

I enjoyed the story but felt sometimes things were rushed and not fully developed or described. Easy book for a gossipy beach reader.

Book: Catwalk by Nicole Gabor
Rating: 4.5 (rounded up)
Age: 14+
Genre: YA Fiction, Realistic Fiction

Let me start off by saying that i was in a reading slump lately and wasn't finding any book good enough. However, this book had me hooked after the first few chapters. With Cat's constantly changing relationship with Benji to her growing as a model, this book is the perfect cure-all in matters of books.

I've read some books where the author isn't able to portray their character as the correct age, but trust me, Nicole did a great job at broadcasting Cat's ever-changing personalities as a young adult. I really liked Cat's character and demeanor.

Usually in first person pov, the reader feels like they are the character, and that's the way I like it. However, this book was written in a way that even though it was in first person pov, it made me see Cat's journey as hers not mine. Don't get me wrong, usually those types of books are bad, but I LOVED this book because of this. I know that it sounds weird but trust me, you would get what I mean if you read it.

I loved seeing Cat grow through her ups and downs and develop as a person. I would say something to add would be some diversity because the Italian characters were portrayed as shallow.

Hat off to the author who has made this book possible through her constant hard work.

I was given an advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review.

18 year old Cat defies her parents wishes and moves to NYC to start her modeling career. She quickly becomes the new IT girl of the industry and gains all the benefits (good and bad). She starts to question the industry when people start asking her to do questionable things to keep getting high profile work.

This was a super fast read that I actually finished in one sitting. It was definitely a page turner and kept a fast pace. I think the author did a great job of showing the not so glamorous sides of the modeling/fashion industry.

I was glad that the MC Cat was able to keep her morals and turn her experiences into something positive in the end and help other models.

I think this a great example for all young adults in any industry because often times they feel like they cant say no to anything because they are trying to make it!

I love a female protagonist and a good ending. Also...catchy book covers.

Aside from being a fast-paced book, I liked the story. I like how the main character rose above the challenges. That the story includes family, friendships and love.

description

Catwalk is a story about Catherine "Cat" Watson - an aspiring new model determined to make it in the New York fashion scene straight out of college, coming from a sheltered suburban home. She dives into the world of fashion with the help of her roommate, Jonnie, who is also a fashion model. Even if Jonnie's more experienced, they discover together the industry that is rewarding but relentless in its pursuit of perfection while navigating and avoiding the "dangerous."

This book is the author's debut novel and is told from the first-person POV. The writing is witty and easy to follow. It shows Cat's path of an invisible spaghetti girl turned "It Girl" overnight due to "being at the right place, with the right people." The events mentioned are raw and unfiltered with interactions and reactions of two different worlds - the conservative family life of New Jersey versus the outrageous New York lifestyle.

Focusing solely on Cat first - I love reading about self-discovery, young love, and learning through experience. I do believe that "mistakes" are part of growing up, but there were so many times that I wished she listened a bit to her father, who is looking out for her and is a lawyer who knows more than her. Yes, she did many things independently (thought carelessly) to prove her now grown-up status, but the cost was high.
The theme of the book reminds me of the saying, "the grass is greener on the other side." Even if so many have gone through and advised the younger generation of this saying, no one can convince the current youth to avoid these "possible mistakes." They all have to experience and learn from it through "failures." Sadly, sometimes the cost of those mistakes is relatively high. I felt it to be in Cat's case. She had to make "big decisions, was frustrating as I shake my head and yell out, "don't do it" or "it's not worth it" in my head. In the book, readers will see Cat dive deeper into the abyss of her "mistakes" then later trying desperately to claw out of it.

There is a lot of romance going on in the book. Not only one but two men were vying for Cat's attention. Let me tell you - both men helped Cat (in their own way) in the end. They both made them see her potential and also what she should not settle for. They were the catalyst of Cat's "epiphany" of what she can do to help others. Inadvertently, she does make an impression, an impact, to at least one of them also - to become better versions of themselves.

The second part of the book talks about the fashion industry - the seedy part of "back-door dealings" and possible dangers models go through to be the next cover model. It will make readers question everything about business and the people who run it. The author does not censor the shady and scary events Cat went through behind the glitz and glamour of unique locations, beautiful and extra people, and opportunities. It mentions the expected - sex, drugs, alcohol, and abuse (all types) that a new model should learn on the spot fast.

I love how the author resolved the ending. It talks about human rights and brings in empowerment, not only of women but also for everyone working to make beautiful billboard posters, magazine covers, and successful runway shows. There is a lot that goes to making one person look good. This book is an eye-opener for me and makes me try to hunt down the inspiration of this juicy, scandalous story.

In summary, Catwalk is all about growing up, and finding out perception versus reality is not what it is all cracked up to be. It focuses on the fashion industry and showcases the beauty and "pitfalls." But the more important message is that it brings in the spirit of empowerment and human rights protection for everyone working in the industry.

When 18-year-old, shy, suburban aspiring model Catherine Watson suddenly has it all as the New York fashion world’s new “It” girl, she thinks she has everything she ever dreamed of—or was it right in front of her all along? Leaving her good-girl image behind, “Cat” quickly learns things aren’t always what they seem on the catwalk, and she’s faced with a decision that will change her life forever.

“Sometimes, the things that are most worth fighting for are the things you already have.”

Overall: 4.5/5 Stars

Nicole Gabor beautifully composes a coming-of-age story with the backdrop of the NYC modeling world. Being a former fashion model herself, I bet she knows a thing or two about the industry. As readers, we are taken on a journey with Catherine as she navigates what she truly wants as she makes some very tough decisions.

I was immediately drawn to Catherine because I remember being a teenager so vividly. Even though I’m not a six-foot, 120-pound aspiring model, I related to Catherine so much. At 18, she’s in that oh-so-fun stage between high-schooler and adult. After dropping the bomb on her parents that she wanted to move to New York to pursue modeling instead of going to college after graduation, Catherine is thrown into a whirlwind of photo shoots, boy problems, and so many “bi-atches.”

During an evening of partying too hard, she meets Seth, the son of a famous model. He’s a complete sweetheart and seems almost too good to be true. You have to admit he’s swoon-worthy, but Catherine already has a boy-who’s-not-her-boyfriend-but-sometimes-she-kisses at home. Enter a love triangle, one of my all-time favorite tropes! Who will she choose? Who will win her heart? You’ll just have to read and see!

In the midst of too many drinks, uppity models who are hungover half the time, and men that are way too old for her hitting on her, Catherine almost quits. Modeling isn’t what she thought it was! She knew it would be difficult, but not like this. Suddenly though, she’s New York City’s “It” girl; “Catherine” is turned into “Cat” and her face is everywhere. Once she signs her contract, that’s it for her - she’s off to Aruba and Italy for photoshoots and Fashion Week.

Not too long into her career, Cat begins to run into some trouble. She’s forced into a lot of situations that make her uncomfortable with her agent, and when she confides to her roommate with her concerns and asks, “What are we, prostitutes?” she’s greeted with a bitter, “No, we wear better clothes.”

At this point, Cat has to make a choice that will change her life forever. Does she give everything up? Does she give in to “creepy old men” for fame and fortune? Or does she go back home, take classes like a “normal teenager” and always wonder what might have been?

I loved going through Catherine’s journey with her. Her character arc is beautifully written; from the immature teen she is in the beginning to the accomplished woman she is at the end, I was rooting for her the entire time. She goes through a lot of changes in such a short amount of time. She learns a good lesson and truly finds herself along the way.

Trigger warning: Drug/alcohol abuse, ugly side of the modeling industry

When Catherine told her parents that she was moving to New York City to be a model instead of going to college you would have thought she told them their family dog had died. When she arrived at the bus station she was so nervous she thought she was going to throw up until a commotion drew her attention to a man in the waiting area. A man smooching the glass with a sign that said DON'T FORGET THE LITTLE PEOPLE. Her crazy friend Benji. She smiled as she boarded the bus.

Her roommate in New York told her she was going to show her the ropes and took her to an indescript nightclub. The next thing she knows the ceilings are dripping she is so dizzy and throwing up. Then a man in the restroom asks if the little green men were hers. Someone had slapped a LSD patch onto the black of her thigh.

I really enjoyed this book. It is told totally from Catherine's POV. I'm not tall, but I totally feel for Catherine and her being bullied through school because of her gangliness and tall height. Even with her duckling to swan transformation her naivete about the workings in modeling could have been detrimental.

Even though Catherine ends up with Benji and you know she's going to get her HEA, this story is really about Catherine exposing the modeling profession in their unethical practices and abuse of young children who are told it is what they need to do in order to make it in the modeling world.

This book is very well written and the storyline kept my attention. The characters were all well defined and you can feel all excitement, frustration, disappointment, discomfort, disgust coming off the pages. Small-town girl making it big in the fashion industry and then exposing its flaws so others can avoid what she had to endure.

I definitely recommend this book and look forward to reading more by Nicole Gabor.

There are things I absolutely loved about this book and things I absolutely didn’t love. Overall, the writing was solid. The story kept moving and although it was a slow start, once I was pulled in, I got through it fairly quickly.

Cat is well written as a naive barely adult jumping into a notoriously predatory industry. I could see where the story was going from the outset, and I was surprisingly not disappointed that the plot was so predictable. It was a solid commentary on unethical practices in the beauty industry, as well as MeToo and the exploitation and trafficking of children and young adults. There were a lot of ways that she reminded me of my younger, more gullible, will-do-anything-for-success self and that level of authenticity in her character is why I liked her.

I did get lost in the sea of characters at times, trying to sort out who was from back home and who were new connections. There were a few characters who could have been developed more to add to the tension Cat was experiencing as they were introduced as solid antagonists to her story.

I was disappointed that the story climaxed and resolved so quickly. I would have loved to see the conclusion happening more in real time, rather than the tidy way that it ended.

Overall, a cute read with an important message.

Content warnings: drug abuse, sexual assault and sex trafficking.

reviewing now, it is available on Amazon and other platforms on July 6th. i super excited to check out Catwalk by Nicole, was contacted by her people to read it. so excited to get the chance, to check her out and see what she has in store. love finding new books and new authors. always. that makes my heart happy. my book heart that is. YA. teen read. first lets chat about the book cover. so fun. i enjoy pink ..as a kid i didn't like it at all. now as an adult ... i enjoy it. i don't find many shirts (blouses) with it in it but i will keep looking. lol!! i always laugh when folks say "they all chat about" guess we are hanging out in different crowds. i am thankful that times have changed a bit ... that there are more realistic times ... guess we are heading in the right direction ... may not be where we truly wanna be ..but we are going ... there is a bad crowd in all things ... negativity i mean. find the positive and hold 2 the light. shy away from others parts. i mean why not??! negativity in life ir anything really, what does it give u ...what can you get from it? nothing. it is not good for your life, your mental health, friends, family ... it is just not good or healthy.

I honestly wasn't expecting to like this book this much. Reading about the 'insides' of the modeling world is always appealing, but I had guessed it would be a plot about a young model who fell for the fame until reaching rock bottom, to then, discover the simple things in life were what she really needed all along. Well, this is not the plot here. In this story, we do have a young woman catapulted to instant success, but she realizes soon enough things weren't quite right and then takes measures into her own hands, with the potential to change the whole beauty industry. It was inspiring and refreshing. It's also nice to know the author Nicole Gabor brought her own experience to the pages—it certainly gives us an intensified feeling of veracity for the story, that question of 'Does it really happen in real life?' at the end of the book. Very nice reading for sure!

Inspiring

I won this book in a Goodreads First Read giveaway.

I was a little hesitant to read this book because I personally lean towards fantasy, action and adventure books. Little did I know that I was about to go on a adventure less traveled but really interesting. It dives deep within a young woman’s soul as she becomes an adult quickly. It made me think about my own insecurities that I’ve said to myself time and time again. How can one voice (my voice) make a difference? It shows that one voice can turn to many. I really hope more people read this and know that they aren’t alone and that there is light even in the darkest of tunnels. I will recommend this book to all of my friends young and old. We all may not be finding our way through modeling but it was easy to relate to. We are all beautiful. I will keep a little bit of the character Cat with me while I travel through life. Thank you for the opportunity to try a new book that inspired me to be a voice.

I really enjoyed this book as I love fashion and I was a model in high school and an actress and the lifestyle and things that happen are very similar. I also moved to New York to pursue my dreams and I didn't fall into drugs but had issues with all-night clubbing and never eating to reach unrealistic goals. I think that any book that shows the reality of that world is worth a read.
I really liked the character development and I felt close to Cat and also rooting for her all the way.
I recommend this book for a great read, especially if you are into fashion, modeling, or going after your dreams in any industry that seems to be glamorous but really isn't.
The author does a great job with pacing, story arcs, emotions, and character narrative.

An eighteen year old achieves her dream of being a model but then what happens when it's isn't all glamor and designer clothes? A good coming-of-age story that also exposes the wild side of making it "big". Reminded me or the Netflix series Emily in Paris or the movie/book The Devil Wears Prada. I appreciated the journey the main character goes on and thought her development flowed nicely through the book. I did experience a variety of emotions during her journey especially wanting to make her "wake up" with her naivete and sometimes poor decision making. I did think the entire story was predictable but could see the novel getting adapted into a movie.

A coming of age story that you won’t want to put down! I was instantly draw to the main character, Catherine and loved how the story was told from her perspective. This book will have you feeling all the emotions. You’ll be cheering for her, heartbroken for her, frustrated with her, and proud of her. Although it’s a fictional story, it talks about some very dark and disturbing things that happen in the modeling/fashion industry. If you’re like me and loved the show, America’s Next Top Model, you’ll love this book too!

*This book addresses some very heavy topics. Please look up the trigger warnings before reading.

Cat is an absolutely amazing lead. From quiet, small town girl to star, she has a wonderful strength that shines through. There are some crazy situations that I'm not sure if I'd have handled them quite as well as Cat. Everything isn't always as wonderful as it may seem from the outside, and sometimes reality isn't what we hoped. I loved reading Cat's story (narrated by her), and watching her grow as she pursued her dreams. A great story of inner strength and following your dreams, this story is inspiring and will keep you captivated for hours.

A fun and enlightening story! As you follow Cat on her journey of chasing what she believes is her dream job but turns out to be maybe more than she can handle. This book has a little bit of everything....fashion, love, intrigue, self discovery. A great book for any teen (or adult) about finding yourself and the self confidence to discover what you really want out of life. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it!

4.5 rounded up. This was a really good debut and not what I was expecting at all. It’s much deeper showing an ugly side to the modeling/fashion industry that many people may not be familiar with. The main character Cat changes and grows in each chapter of the book. This really is a great coming of age story. If you ever read Bunheads by Stacy Flack you’ll definitely get the same feel from this book.

Excerpt -- On Mothers
There was something in her, in all mothers, that doesn't let you keep up your shell, your facade. A mother always knows. I could never hide from her. Even now, I couldn't lie to her, because she knew, she knew the secrets of my heart.

Congratulations to my former colleague, Nicole Gabor, on her first YA fiction book! Can't wait for the sequel. ;)

😜 In receiving this book from the Festival of Words, I was excited beyond belief to understand we had a novelist that reaches into a world that appears glitter and gold, and from the inside a whole different experience and view of what sometimes can be missing...when you think you have it all.

In talking with Ms. Gabor, it was very welcoming to see and hear someone taking time to reach youth and readers based on experiences that will define them. Wait until you hear the podcast Ms. Gabor was willing to record with us as well - and very very enlightening, personal and ...

...impactful. As I read the beginning I was cringing all the way knowing this was a painted picture much more colorful than seems possible- and unfortunately, I was introduced to a world that takes advantages of others, while painting a picture of what is considered a "perfect" world.

A toast to family, staying true to yourself, and finding your own inner peace. Thank you to Ms. Gabor to introducing us to this world, and stay tuned for the accompanying podcast.

I have not read a book this fast in a long time! Catwalk is a whirlwind of a novel that I could not put down. Gabor’s own career in modeling lends a realism and gravity to the story, shining a spotlight on an industry that everyone sees but no one really knows anything about. Catherine Watson is an endearing and heartwarming character even when her she starts to believe her own “It Girl” hype. Gabor perfectly captures the loneliness and yearning to belong of a teen on the fringes of her high school class and how that lack of confidence can stick with you far into adulthood. This book made me laugh, cringe and smile! Well done, Nicole Gabor!

I liked this book, I just didn't love it. The author gave a grim look at the modelling industry. It was a bit disturbing to read at times. I wasn't sure when the book is supposed to have been set. There's dated references to Jersey Shore and JLo's perfume Glow and then more modern references like Welcome To New York by Taylor Swift. I assumed it was based some time ago due to smart phones not being mentioned. Cat's growth throughout the book was admirable. I went from thinking she was a bit of a spoilt brat to really admiring her. It's a decent read but maybe for somebody a bit younger than somebody in their 30s.

I received this book for free and I am leaving a review voluntarily.
