This is Adam Hamdy's follow up to Black Thirteen which introduced us to ex-military, ex-spook, mixed race Scott Pearce, the central all action protagonist of this series. Pearce has opted to carry out a private investigation into a Thai man from the previous book, a connection that is to have him working for billionaire, Huxley Blaine Carter, a man with resources and contacts one can only dream of. The only problem is that Pearce does not trust him, nor the former French DGCE intelligence woman, Brigitte Attali, that he has encountered previously who is now on his team. The Syrian, the disabled and traumatised Leila Nuhman, the online internet whizz is back and joining the team is Kyle Wollerton, struggling to come to terms with the end of his marriage and feeling the despair of not seeing his children.

The team find themselves investigating the breakout escape of 2 prisoners from a notorious Cairo prison that results in mass deaths by an unknown and undetectable toxin. This leads them to split up, with Brigitte and Kyle making their way to China which turns out to have devastating consequences, and for Pearce and Leila going to Seattle in search of Ziad Malek, one of the Cairo prisoners that escaped. They find themselves in the midst of deadly American drug wars, with corrupt cops, stolen drugs, the powerful drug crime family of the Chechan Deni Salamov and the existence of the sinister and ruthless Red Wolves. They know they are in the right place as mass deaths and murders occur, replicating what happened in Cairo. Pearce finds himself in the most challenging, stressful and deadly of missions with his team, racing against time to prevent a global nightmare of a catastrophe.

Hamdy illustrates how the vulnerable can be radicalised in this dark and exciting thriller, and gives us a amoral villainous enemy that is willing to hold the world to ransom by any means necessary, using blackmail, and willing to accept a huge civilian death toll. This is a fast paced, nail biting read, with short, snappy chapters, well plotted, with plenty of suspense, and great characters, I particularly liked Leila, so desperate to find her sister, the only family she has left, and Brigitte grew on me, particularly after the horrifying circumstances she finds herself in. Many thanks to Pan Macmillan for an ARC.

Scott Pearce was kicked out of MI6 because of his obsession with the perpetrators of a terrorist attack, who have links to a Thai smuggling network. His dismissal came after thwarting a plan to subvert Pakistan’s Government, but, fearing a wider conspiracy, he’s still determined to catch those whom he thought had escaped justice, and has been on the trail of the conspirators ever since.

This time around, a deadly toxin, that can kill with a single touch, is being deliberately released into society, the implications of which, are absolutely terrifying on the global stage, and Pearce is determined to bring these evil conspirators to justice, who include among their number, a bunch of corrupt police officers. A follow up to the thrilling ‘Black 13’, this is completely gripping, with an all action hero in Pearce, and a breathtaking storyline.

*I was invited to read Red Wolves by the publisher in exchange for an honest unbiased review *

Second in the Scott Pearce series which started with a bang with the great Black Thirteen.

Here we have an international second adventure, with some great returning characters.

Scott Pearce is quickly becoming another of the great action hero's.

A daring escape from a Cairo prison.
An assassin who kills with a single touch.
A vicious drug war on the streets of America.

Suspecting these events are related, ex-MI6 officer Scott Pearce uncovers a chilling plot to unleash a terrifying new toxin on an unsuspecting world. When Pearce’s team deploy to fight the menace on two fronts an undercover operation goes horribly wrong, leaving Pearce in a race against time to stop this deadly new threat.

Pearce has burned the espionage rulebook, but now he is about to find out he’s not the only one who can light a fire, and his enemies are determined to see the world burn . . .

A highly entertaining, fast moving, fast paced, intelligent action thriller. A story to follow closely.

Espionage thriller with the adding of the Covid 19, the difficulty of travelling, following the different characters around the world.

Is this book as Black Thirteen, not quite, but still a four star thriller, filled with high octane, high-tech, high action.

A brilliant spy thriller from a new master

Former MI6 operative Scott Pearce is hellbent on finding those really responsible for a heinous terror attack in Islamabad. But gradually he realises that his pursuit is only one piece of a puzzle with global ramifications. There are sinister forces at work. No one knows who they are or what they truly want. But there next operation involves unleashing a horrific bio weapon on US soil and if Pearce and his team want to stand any chance of stopping it, they will have to play dirty, no matter the cost. And one thing soon becomes abundantly clear: in a brave new world where high-tech technology and social tensions are on the rise, the old rules of espionage no longer exist...

Adam Hamdy started his new series with a bang last year. Black 13 ended up being one of my favourite reads of 2020. Red Wolves is even better, ascending into the Olymp of modern spy thrillers and establishing Adam Hamdy as one of the most talented spy thriller authors writing today.

In a genre with established tropes and patterns it is noteworthy that everything feels fresh and exciting here. From the ever twisting narrative over the characters up to the global settings, all is presented with a modern and unique spin. The action is relentless and the references to Covid lend the story an even more timely quality.
But the true standouts are the emotional heart of the story and the threat our heroes have to face. The latter is deviously innovative and frighteningly plausible; a welcome diversion to the umpteenth dirty bomb or EMP readers are used to.

This novel is perfect for fans of Will Jordan, Rob Sinclair and Robert Ludlum. Pick it up, you won’t be disappointed!

This is the second book in the Scott Pearce series, and it brings together again four unlikely characters that are the world’s only hope. The story opens with a daring prison break that leaves a massacre behind the escapees. The authorities are baffled, but Pearce has that gut feeling that it isn’t a one-off event. Two more take place and only Pearce link them together, but he is far from solving the puzzle.

It becomes an international problem, as it touches down on different continents. A new life and death race is about to begin that will become all too real. Kidnappings and a ticking clock are on the cards. The stakes have never been higher, with some of the chapters that tear you apart.

Another fabulous storyline with heart in the mouth moments that turn the pages faster. I am growing to love the unpredictable choices that this elite group make. There is a ruthless edge about them, even with each other, which is fascinating, unpredictable, and deadly.

The scary thing about these books is you could see something like this happening. Another terrific read.

I wish to thank Net Galley and the publisher for an e-copy of this book which I have reviewed honestly.

I’m a huge fan girl of Adam Hamdy and loved The Pendulem Trilogy. When Black 13 came Adam kindly gifted me a copy and I was blown away (see in my reviews) so I’ve been waiting for what feels like years for the follow up…..by gum I was not disappointed!

This is set set in the now and starts off with an absolutely gripping prison escape in Egypt, then very soon we, the reader, are caught up in the world of ex MI6 office Scott Pearce and his team, in an utterly thrilling chase through Countries to stop a deadly Toxin being spread around the world.

This is such an intensely researched and intelligent thriller, there’s so much for fans of Spy and Espionage books here, I would categorise it as James Bond on Speed! With every page you get deeper and deeper in this world and it’s is immersive and just breathtaking! I really can’t find any fault in Red Wolves and think it’s Adams best work so far. The description of fights, of chases, of spy wear and spy equipment is just amazingly detailed and so realistic! The characters are truly human, and diverse, as well as being kick arse which makes for the storyline and underlying continued from Black 13 storyline.

In summing up, This is my 47th book this year and it’s gone straight in at number 2 ( only closely pipped by Will Dean’s The Last Thing To Burn. Simply fantastic, an unputdownable thriller that would make a superb movie, if you’ve not read any of Adams books then I urge you to read Black 13 and Red Wolves, you will not be disappointed.

A fantastic 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Read!

A follow up to the rather good Black 13. This is a fast moving thriller as a small group of operatives battle rather dangerous bad guys.
Scott Pierce is a on a solo mission but he ends up working with old friends when their interests coincide and a mysterious benefactor offers help.
The team are rather good and do not fit the usual special operator model. Pierce is talented but fallible, Leila is in a wheelchair but conflicted and smart, Woolerton is a more generic special ops type and shifty French Brigitte completes the diverse team.
A global conspiracy to import lethal and controlling drugs is what they find themselves involved in, throw in corrupt cops, drugs cartels and bio weapons and you have all the ingredients for the thrills this book delivers.
Adam Hamdy is a talented writer and delivers all you could want in a techno thriller. There is another book to come and I am already looking forward to it. Thanks to NetGalley for an early view of this.

Really good. Just prefer a book to be a book not a less than subtle screenplay. Well that's how it read to me.
Still, I thoroughly enjoy the stories and look forward to the next.

My thanks to NetGalley, publisher Pan Macmillan and author, Adam Handy for the electronic review copy.

This is a cracking story and follows on from Book#1 - Black 13. To appreciate fully the background Black 13 is a really good read, but this Book#2 can be read as a standalone as sufficient past information is provided in the narrative for continuity.

Scott has been on the trail of a smuggling gang for 2 years and is now in Malaysia. Compromised by a situation where young white girls are traded for arms, Scott once again encounters Brigitte Attali, a former French Intelligence Officer. She's now working for Huxley Blaine Carter - a self-styled spymaster with access to very hi-tech resources and billions of dollars, and henceforth finds himself in Blaine Carter's presence, along with his disabled friend Leila Nuhman - herself being extremely technically adept, together with Scott's MI6 recruiter Kyle Wollerton. All three are propositioned by Blaine Carter. - do a job for him for 3 weeks and he would facilitate helping each one with their personal quests. He'll help Leila find her sister, give a firm lead for Scott's smugglers, and restore Kyle's self-worth.

Two weeks previously Elroy Lang had positioned himself in a notorious Egyptian prison to facilitate the escape of Ziad Malek by means of exploding a canister of white powder which, on contact, killed all those present..
Ziad wants revenge on those who had set him up for arrest and, back in Seattle, he uses a chemical to kill the person who had taken his job in the docks. Elroy has a plan to take over the West Coast drug distribution network and allow Ziad to avenge his injustice. All with the help of instigating a gang war.

However, this is so much more than just heroin smuggling. There is a new chemical weapon to be discovered - one which will have devastating consequences for the world. Who's responsible for this production? What's their plan? Between China and the U.S. their team has to not only track the source but also the destination, along with the distribution network - with life-threatening consequences..

One touch is all that it takes - to take a life.

This is a fast-moving, action-packed and intriguing thriller - can't wait for the next instalment.

My one criticism is going to be that I found the narrative ran-on between what I thought should have been different chapters and their completely different scenes so required a bit of back-tracking.

At the start of the 2020s, Adam Hamdy’s Black 13 crafted a new, more intense direction for the spy genre. The author has wasted no time putting together a follow-up with equally impressive results.

Some time after taking down a far-right terrorist operation, Scott Pierce and his team (Leila, Kyle and Brigitte) are hired by a wealthy businessman to investigate a deadly bio-weapon that can kill an entire room of people in an instant. The globe-trotting operation spans Egypt and China, before eventually arriving in America on the frontline of a vicious drug war. As the team improvises, stumbles across setbacks and grapples with their personal moral codes, we’re treated to another unrelenting thrill-ride. This unfolds through short chapters across three well-defined parts.

The tactical espionage action is what you’d expect with some futuristic technology bolted on, but a new dimension is added with Ziad Malek. Many chapters take place from his perspective and he’s a very tortured character. After being broken out of prison in the opening, his misguided quest for revenge takes him to some sinister places. Hamdy ensures that every bit of stress, fear and heartbreak is conveyed and this goes beyond the central plot. Many of the characters are involved in awful practices, but they still have those they care about around them. The action rises and falls organically with enough time for grieving and greater reflection.

That’s not to say the tension among the main characters is diminished; far from it, they continue to be put through some dire situations. Kyle and Brigitte are put in serious danger at one point and the ensuing twist complicates wider events. Red Wolves doesn’t hold back from the grim nature of its setting and context. The elusive toxin is the most blatant example; every fight scene has real weight behind it as only one touch is needed to assassinate. The stakes remain high all the way through.

Recommended?

YES: Just like the original, Red Wolves is an expertly crafted spy thriller that continues the genre’s push into unconventional territory. In many ways it feels more personal with the theme of family running strong, even with all the sadistic deeds being committed. I’m looking forward to seeing what Scott Pierce and company get up to next.

Red Wolves marks the return of Scott Pearce - or Captain Scarlet as I dubbed him in my review for the first in series Black 13, which I would recommend you read first as there are things in this book that follow on directly from action in that one. He's just as indestructible in this follow up, which is not a bad thing given what the author puts him through once again. Him and his three colleagues.
And the threat in this book is rather scary. We start with a prison break which ends in mass extinction of life for all those around the two escapees. Deaths by an unknown poison it appears. Scott teams up with internet whizz Leila to track down the escapees whilst Kyle Wollerton and Brigitte follow up the technology aspect of the delivery of the toxin.
And that's all I am saying about the plot as to say much more could inject spoilers and, well, not going there. Suffice to say that if you have read Black 13 - and if you've paid attention to my opening, you have, so you'll know what you're getting yourself into. Action comes thick and fast and, on the whole delivered punch after punch. Ramping up to becoming a bit of a race against time and a formidable enemy to make the world a safe place once again.
With characters that are both larger than life and also real - yes that does make sense, acting out an extremely well plotted and executed story, this book gripped me from the start, held me captive throughout, spitting me out at the end, satisfied and exhausted. It's a long old book, page count wise, but it really doesn't feel like that whilst reading it. With scant waffle or padding and with description limited to the necessary, the book gets on with itself very well indeed.
Just now have to wait for episode 3. And I will be keeping an eye open for it.
My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.

My thanks to Pan Macmillan for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘Red Wolves’ by Adam Hamdy in exchange for an honest review.

This is the second in his series featuring Scott Pearce, an ex-MI6 agent living in exile. Following the events of ‘Black 13’ Pearce has returned to his previous mission of seeking the perpetrators of a terrorist attack. It was this obsession that led to his being booted out of MI6.

In the opening of ‘Red Wolves’ there is a daring escape from a Cairo prison that leaves a number of prisoners and guards dead from a mysterious toxin that kills at a single touch. Other deaths follow. Pearce and his associates quickly gets drawn into this case as they learn that the shadowy group involved are planning to unleash a highly dangerous drug onto the streets of America.

This is just a taste of this non stop high octane thriller. While it certainly provided a few hours of white knuckle escapism, there’s no doubt of the real world threat of synthetic opioid addiction that underlies the main story.

Adam Hamdy addresses this in his Author’s Note and includes a link to a list of international organisations that work to assist people in the grip of drug addiction. He also notes his decision to refer to the Covid-19 pandemic in the narrative, which mainly manifests in characters being tested for the virus.

Overall, ‘Red Wolves’ proved a great action thriller and I will be looking forward to future adventures for Scott Pearce and his team.

Red Wolves is book two of the Scott Pearce series by Adam Hamdy. After three unrelated incidents happen, Ex-MI6 Officer Scott Pearce uncovers a plot to unleash a toxin. Pearce's team went undercover to find the people involved with this terrorist act. However, the operations fail, and Scott Pearce had to race to find answers. The readers of Red Wolves will continue to follow Scott Pearce to find out what happens.

Red Wolves is the first book I have read of Adam Hamdy. I had trouble engaging with the plot of Red Wolves. However, when I started to engage with the book, I began to enjoy reading this book. I love Adam Hamdy portrayal of the characters and how they interacted with each other throughout this book. Adam Hamdy excellently introduces his reader to the plot of the next book. Red Wolves was well written and researched by Adam Hamdy. I like the Adam Hamdy description of the settings of Red Wolves that compliment the book's plot.

The readers of Red Wolves will learn about espionage and how it can affect everyone who is involved. Also, the readers of Red Wolves will learn about mountain climbing and the safety risks involved.

I recommend this book.

Scott Pearce was introduced in Black 13, an excellent take on the world of international terrorism and government agency’s attempts to foil those plans. Red Wolves keeps up the action, with a wickedly intriguing and downright scary proposition. What if the worlds drug trade could be relaxed by a simple patch that needed replacing?

The realities of this are working, the fear created by the author is excellent and Pearce feels more like a rounded character. For me, this book is around 100 pages too long, as a result the middle drags way more than it should with some of the dialogue clunky in places. Those bits aside, this is another great read and I’m looking to Hamdy’s next Pearce thriller. I would recommend you read Black 13 before jumping into this though.

A bold escape from an Egyptian prison sets Scott Pearce on the trail of a group of people intent on introducing a new synthetic drug into the United States of America. With the help of a team pulled together by Blaine Carter he follows the trail from Egypt to Hong Kong and finally Seattle. Once again Scott faces down terrorists who are linked to those he identified during the Black 13 investigation and they are as intent as ever to cause as much disruption as possible to the USA.

Non-stop action from start to finish. Really enjoyed reading this book.

Thanks to Netgalley, Pan Macmillan and Adam Hamdy for the ARC of this book in return for an honest review.

A bit of a mixed bag.

I thoroughly enjoyed Black13, the first Scott Pearce book and looked forward to this but unfortunately I found Red Wolves a bit of a mixed bag.
Again the characters were well drawn and interesting and the plot was frightening in its plausibility. But it just failed to grip in the way that Black 13 did.
It seemed to rush from one action scene to another in an almost comic strip fashion. By the end I was glad of the hiatus of an actionless final chapter.
Over all a disappointing second outing.

For the follow-up to Black 13, Adam Hamdy went with a different approach. I loved the cut and thrust of the first book and the newness of the characters. In this one it all fell a little flat for me. The story did not have the same bounce and drive and felt the worse for it. It makes me question whether this type of book is for me after all.

Read this book based on Eric Bishop recommendation. I was not disappointed. Great pace throughout the book. Every little drop offs. Strong character development. Look forward to reading other books by Adam in the future. I would also say that it rates higher or closer to 4.5 stars then 4.0. Interesting book, number 2 of the Scott Pearce series. Well written but sometimes a bit over the top. The story line just about held together and the characters were believable within the context of the book. All in all an enjoyable action filled read, would recommend to those that like this style of action/undercover/spy/crime type of novel.

This is the follow-up to Black 13, and I loved it. I found it easier to get into than B13 because I now knew the main characters. Besides the main characters of Scott, Leila, Kyle and Brigette, I felt for one of "the bad guys" Ziad.
Again, Adam Hamdy has taken us into a subject that can happen, COVID-19 being proof of this. Imagine being dependent on a black patch (plaster) to keep you alive for the rest of your life. Scary stuff. An addictive and thought-provoking story.
