In this second entry in the series, Morgan returns to Missouri to take backup with his girlfriend after 4 months in Texas, pursuing Cartel killers, only to find she's dating an old friend of his. What did he expect?
When a stripper is murdered and dumped in a ditch, Morgan gets on the case, finding a passel of powerful people, who want nothing more than to cover the whole thing up.
Morgan pokes, prods, and jokes around until he gets to the bottom of things.
Pretty good.

WL Ripley – Jake Morgan Thriller Bk 2 – No Badge Required – Reviewed 9/20/21 – Read 9/12-13/21
When a woman turns up dead, Jake Morgan goes after powerful men at the Paradise Country Club.
After the dust settled down in Paradise, Jake Morgan returned to his job in Texas only to find that his friend Umberto Segundo, another Texas Ranger, had been taken down. Umberto’s family includes three little ones. They gave him a promotion that also put him into a position to hunt and take down the cartel that was responsible for Umberto. He knew that he had left his heart back in Missouri with the woman that had stolen it, but he could not leave until he finished the job. The problem was that he had promised that it would only take a month to finish things in Texas and return, but he was going on four months, and she is no longer taking or answering his calls. The new job had kept him working and moving, so involved that every time that he thought about Harper, another case would hit his desk. Now here he was on a stakeout, in a ditch watching a loading dock, thinking about Harper.
With his mind still on Harper, he almost did not hear the sound of the Velcro when the man behind him pulled his weapon, turning he brought up his gun, yelling Texas Ranger, and took the guy down. Just then another shot rang out but missed. He swung his weapon and shot him in the throat. Checking the vitals of the men, he realized that he had taken a hit. Jake called in and shortly he could hear the sound of trucks and the distant sound of the chopper. Now here he was sitting in front of his commander being dressed down, of course, he was informed that he was now placed on administrative leave, to give him time for his wound to heal. But Jake knew right then that he would not be coming back. He headed for Paradise and hopefully, the woman that stole his heart. Two weeks later he was now a Paradise County Investigator, and the story begins.
Join Jake as he searches for a killer, while he tries to repair his relationship with the woman that holds his heart…
What did I like? Well, I can see right now that I have a new series to follow. I love Jake Morgan, he kicks ass and does not take guff from anyone, no matter how far up the food chain they are. The other thing that I like about this series is the feeling of the hometown and old friends. Working and living with people that you have known your whole life seems wonderful.
What will you like? It seems this series is going to be a rip roarer every time out of the gate. The characters are even better than the previous book and they were something. The storyline touches on a subject that sometimes ends up shoved under the carpet, but the author shows us that everyone deserves justice. I get the feeling from the plots and characters that the author has done an incredible amount of research because it shows on every page. I certainly hope that this is only the beginning of this series because so far both books have been impressive. Plenty of suspense
Great character and a great plot. Loved the smart, snarky dialogue. Jake is primed for his own series..but take him back to Texas....the only place big enough for this guy.

The Jake Morgan character made this book one you couldn't put down once you started reading! His development as well as the other characters was excellently done. I highly recommend this book!

A refreshing new author to me. The main character is funny, tough, and dependable.. A former Texas Ranger, now a town/country cop.
