Chuckholes and raging rivers, fog, rain, and impossibly steep grades—it’s the spring of 1860.
The Butterfield Overland Trail is more than hazardous for a lone coach hurling down the Missouri run between Syracuse and Fort Smith, Arkansas. But for Texas Ranger Lin Jarret and his pack of Hellbenders charged with freighting $10,000 in stolen loot, it’s a raging gauntlet of gunfire and death.
As the deadly Order of the Ivory Compass aims to engulf the Show-Me State, Texas Ranger Lin Jarret, Reece Sinclair, and Micah LeMay face an impossible assignment in their second explosive adventure in the exciting new Western series—Hellbenders.
Just prior to the outbreak of the American Civil War, the Order of the Ivory Compass is working hard to establish their ideal of a new country carved out of parts of the American South, West, and Caribbean wherein slavery shall remain an institution forever. Now, they have their sights set on Missouri. Among those standing in the way of their progress is Texas Ranger Lin Jarret along with the beautiful but feisty Reece Sinclair, and Micah LeMay. They are known as the Hellbenders.
In order to help finance their version of the Underground Railroad, the Hellbenders recruit a few compadres and proceed with a scheme to rob a train of assets owned by the Ivory Compass themselves. What better way to build a resistance than to use your opponent's wealth? The bad guys soon get wind of the robbery, leading to a perilous chase along the Butterfield Overland Trail in a coach as it makes its way from Syracuse to Fort Smith, Arkansas.
The second book in the Hellbenders series is just as full of gritty action and perilous situations as the first (Hellbenders). The main characters retain their intriguing personalities while new ones provide plenty of new charisma and drama. Just as in the first book, this one is a complete story with a beginning, middle, and end but the larger story continues to build over the series.
I continue to marvel at the author’s ability to capture the voices of his characters. Mixed in with the fire-spitting gunfights and threats coming from all corners, is a nice mix of relationships and humor. Additionally, there is some interesting history sprinkled in. For example, I’d never heard of the Walch Navy 12-shot revolver. It’s a .36 caliber revolver patented in 1859 utilizing superimposed chambers, which means that each of the six chambers could hold two shots, for a total of 12 rounds before reloading. It had two hammers and two side by side triggers, with the trigger for the front loading being positioned slightly ahead of the rear load’s trigger, to help ensure that they are fired in the correct order. Pretty cool gun and when used in the novel, provides a unique gunfight.
A page-turning read to be sure. I’m very much looking forward to the third novel in the series, A Killing At Rimrock.

Lin Jarret, Texas Ranger, was sent by his mentor, to help out Reese Sinclair’s father. Unfortunately, he was killed by corrupt men that wanted his land. Lin helped Reese fight off the Cortinistas to save her ranch, now they are working together to further her efforts in the slave rescues. Reese was the one-woman operation of Hellbenders, helping runaway slaves escape, by getting them into Mexico to save their lives. Lin always had a dream of owning and operating a stagecoach and now with Mr. Sinclair’s stagecoach, he has the chance. They have the ways, they just don’t have the means, so they figured out a plan to stop the deadly Order of the Ivory Compass that wants to take over Missouri.
The Order was a not-so-secret group whose purpose was to secede from the United States and form a new nation based on slavery, using $10,000 that they planned to move by train. Lin and Reese planned to rob them. So far, they have Micah LeMay that showed up just as the action started at the ranch and has decided to stay on and help with this mission. Their plan included recruiting a couple more key people, then using the money to finance and supply one of their way stations in addition to other operating expenses. We find the trio up against impossible odds, but they are ready to take the chance and the story begins.
Join Lin and Reese as they race against time and the men after them to complete their mission…
What did I like? This is certainly a fast-paced read that will take you by storm, but so interesting with all the action and the different difficulties that the pair faced in getting the job done. I just could not lay the book down and read the whole thing in one sitting. I love Lin and Reese and applauded the quest that they have set for themselves. In the first book, we saw that Reese had been doing this pretty much by herself, it takes a strong woman to take on the entire world like that.
What will you like? Action that will take your breath away, shootouts, excitement, a touch of romance, mystery, intrigue, and a thrilling ending. The characters continue to be amazing; the plot is filled with stimulating activities, including lots of details to bring it to life. Richard shows us the in-depth research and his attention to the details as he weaves his plot over the book. We have just started this series and the excitement will continue as Richard has already finished book three, “A Killing At Rimrock” which will be available 10/6/21. This exciting book two in the Hellbender series, “Seven Devils Road” is available NOW, be sure to pick up your copy today!!!
