Crane Fly: A Nova Morgan Novella

Rate this book
All Bucky O'Dare has ever wanted is an easy life. But after meeting the fiery red-headed vampire, Nova Morgan, he realises his life will never be the same again.
The world of the Inflicted Kin is full of darkness, something Bucky is becoming increasingly more aware of, especially after the charred corpse of local Brothel Madam - Lady Jaine turns up complete with a shiny dagger lodged in her chest.
Bucky realises there's a new player in town, one who may just make Soul seem saintly.

With Nova and Ruth off-world, it's down to him to unravel the mystery and figure out who is killing off the local working girls and why.
But Bucky is treading a dangerous path, one that may just see him end up as another stiff on the morgue table.

For the wrath of the wicked is nothing compared to the wrath of a vengeful brother.

Much to the dismay of Bucky O’Dare, Nova Morgan and her inflicted crew head out on a dangerous mission in the realm of Hindra in order to rescue one of their friends who has been kidnapped. Now Bucky is tasked with holding down the fort back in London, but he kept help but miss his best friend Nova and his lover Ruth.

Things don’t stay quiet for long when the body of Lady Jaine, the Madam and owner of one of the prominent brothels is found murdered. What makes everything even more suspect is the new client that immediately takes over Lady Jaine’s new place, which comes with even more bodies left in their wake. Bucky decides it’s time to put the drink down, put on his detective hat, and uncover what exactly is happening in the dark London streets.

I’ll be honest, for the first fifty or so percent of this novella, I wasn’t really sure what I had gotten myself into. I was a bit on the fence with Bucky. He’s brash and standoffish. But, when it counts, Bucky really pulls through and by the end I was definitely rooting hard for him.

Since this is a novella, the action starts from the very beginning and the pacing holds steady throughout. There’s lots of twists and turns as we get into the nitty gritty of who is murdering the local prostitutes (very Jack the Ripper esque). There were a lot of interesting characters that we met along the way who ended up being major players in this story.

The last twenty percent of this book had me at the edge of my seat…and that cliffhanger? Yeah, I am definitely interested in reading the other stories so I can find out more. Overall, this is a great read, and I highly recommend it.

Thank you to Melanie (Fraser’s Fun House) for the blog tour invite and to the author for providing a review copy. This did not influence my review. All opinions are my own.

Nova and her inflicted crew have headed into the dangerous, magical world of Hindra in an attempt to rescue their kidnapped friend and save the lives of the rest of their kind, but what’s happening back in London?

Bucky has been tasked with holding things together back in London, but he is missing best friend Nova as well as his witch lover Ruth and it isn’t too long before he takes his eye off the ball. Trying to look after the inflicted left behind, holding down a job and pining for his friends he seems to spend more and more time drinking. But when a new club opens and a spate of murders occur he knows he needs to pull himself together. Deciding to turn detective Bucky finds himself drawn deeper into the dark underworld of London to discover the identity of the killer, but has he gotten in over his head this time?

Crane Fly is a story I’ve been so excited to immerse myself in and it exceeded my exceptions and then some! Firstly, I must point out that it is vital to have read the previous books in this series before enjoying Crane Fly as it will be make little to no sense otherwise.

This book follows side character Bucky who was prevalent in Cherry Nova and less so in the sequel Death Bringer, however he is a character I fell in love with and one I’ve been keen to read more of. Crane Fly gave me exactly what I hoped for throwing me back into the dark, brooding and atmospheric backdrop of London, with plenty of mystery and secrets in the mix. It’s a fairly short read ( as novellas are), but the pacing is amazing with Kelly-Marie’s writing hooked me immediately and as always left me wanting more.

I adored finding out more about Bucky and what makes him tick, and this action packed instalment provided me with the much needed interlude I craved ahead of the highly anticipated finale of The Nova Morgan Chronicles; Hindra’s Heroine. As always with Pollock’s books she has left this one on a huge cliff edge, meaning I have to endure a (hopefully not too long) wait to find out how things in Bucky’s London play out. I don’t want to say too much about the story here for fear of spoilers, however if you have read and enjoyed the previous books in this series Crane Fly is an absolute must-read. If you haven’t yet had the pleasure of reading any of Pollock’s work I urge you to grab a copy, make a brew and snuggle down to enjoy – they are perfect for the Autumn months so what are you waiting for?

Another brilliant book by Kelly, read this in one go. Couldnt put it down, I didn't want it to end. I loved stepping into bucky's shoes and finding out what is unfolding there. In this short story there are twist and turns leaving you shocked and wanting more! In true kelly style she leaves on a cliffhanger, can't wait for the next book! It can't come quick enough. I can't recommend this series of books enough. A must read

Such a good sub story to the original. I can't wait for the finale and to eventually know the outcome of all of the characters. (can't pick a favourite)

I have received this book for free from Fraser's Fun House. My opinion remains my own.

Crane Fly is a novella set during the events of Death Bringer, book two in the series. It's about Bucky staying home, while the rest of the main cast takes off to save their friend and Hindra.
This novella is only 70 pages long and while that seem short, a lot happens. I was pleasantly surprised by how much actually! There is character development, context to the story, insight in what happens next to the events of book two, and it's just a whole experience on it's own.

In short, this novella is about Bucky O'Dare, one of Nova's friends. While Nova and company are off world, it's down to Bucky to hold the fort and protect their home.
After the death of Soul, the druglord, and several murders of local working girls, Bucky realises there's a new player in town who makes Soul seem saintly. Bucky has to take it upon himself to unravel the mystery and solve the murders, bringing himself on a dangerous path. For the wrath of the wicked is nothing compared to the wrath of a vengeful brother.

In my honest opinion, I think Crane Fly contains the best pieces of prose and overall story and writing Kelly-Marie Pollock has published so far. What she managed to contain within just 70 pages is just impressive and it doesn't feel rushed, cramped or info-dumpey at all. Quite the opposite actually, as I was so hooked into the flow of the story, I could barely believe I only read so few pages. This point is what made it a five star read for me, compared to the four stars I gave the previous two books in the series.

This novella is an excellent addition to the main books, giving a little more context and character development to Bucky when the main group is fighting the good fight elsewhere. Bucky proves that everyone is important, even just a regular human holding the fort at home next to the vampires and witches in another world.
In a lot of series, you could in theory skip the novellas going on in between and during the main books. However, I think this novella is a really important addition to the story and serves as part of the build up of the final book.

In conclusion, this novella is excellently written, providing amazing character development of one of the main characters and context of all people who didn't join the main crew in their journey to Hindra. The story itself is thrilling and the ending is really promising, making me even more excited for the last book in the Nova Morgan-series.

Content Warning: Crane Fly contains profanity, violence, prostitution, death (by violence), fire/arson, drug references and torture.

I was honestly so excited for Crane Fly and really couldn’t wait to read from Bucky’s point of view. Honestly, I thought it would answer a few questions for me… I was totally wrong, instead, I’m left with even more questions and left wondering just what happens to Bucky!?

It’s safe to say the The Chronicles of Nova Morgan trilogy and Crane Fly take you to a unique world where you feel utterly absorbed. Each book is written as if the characters were in the room with you. It’s amazing how strongly the characters personalities shine through.

Kelly-Marie Pollock has once again smashed it! Creating a story line that has you gripped until the very end and leaves you wanting more. When I realised I had reached the end i was devastated, I need to know what happens next! It took a full evening of crochet therapy to get over having to wait until the next book now.
