Christine: Cuando comenzamos una película, hablamos mucho. Caminamos y hablamos.
Joe: No tenemos ni idea de lo que quiere la industria. Aunque tampoco nos importa una mierda. Nos gusta el cine, nos gusta ir al cine, esa es toda nuestra relación con la industria.
My boyfriend got me this book a few months and it was an excellent morning coffee read that detailed some of the most regarded, exciting, and meaningful directors in film history from the perspective of Little White Lies film critic David Jenkins. Most directors were not a ‘discovery moment’ for me, but I enjoyed Jenkins brief recountings of their most notable works, focus, personality, and style as filmmakers and storytellers. Would recommend for an overview, or, if you’re a baby cinephile, introduction to some of the greatest of the greats (Jane campion, Agnes Varda, Jean Luc Goddard, Barry Jenkins, Sofia Coppola, Lucretia Martel, etc), and a few indie/international directors that may have escaped your newsfeed.
More of a bible of the most important filmmakers thus far rather than a deep dive into what makes filmmakers tick. Despite this it’s clear Jenkins has a real reverence for and understanding of both the subject at large and each individual which shines through consistently. The questions he puts to each of the interviewees are thorough and considered, never skirting around top line and always interesting. Would gift in a heartbeat.
I really enjoyed this! The text is episodic enough for me to enjoy throughout my days, and I learned of new artists I'd never heard of. The weight and shine of the pages fits in a satisfying way. I'd like to get a copy of this to keep in my bathroom. Highly recommended from me!
