About the author

Gardening is my passion. I'm a hands-on head gardener, an award-winning gardening journalist and a regular speaker at gardening clubs and events. I'm a bit of a horticultural adventurer, embracing diverse challenges such as planting a National Collection, creating a small garden at Chelsea Flower Show and guest presenting on BBC Gardeners' World.
Gardening and writing about gardening have been my whole career. I have a wide-ranging practical experience, a broad plant knowledge and an unswerving enthusiasm for all things gardening.
As well as numerous awards for my garden writing I’ve also won the Relais & Chateaux garden Trophy for my garden at The Bath Priory and an RHS medal for the creation of ‘The Mini Garden’ at Chelsea Flower Show in 2003. I’m also lucky to have worked with famous garden designers including Arne Maynard, Cleve West and Diarmuid Gavin.

This book has some stunning illustrations in it. The information itself is mostly quite basic facts that we already know although some of it was quite interesting. It's worth the buy just for how beautiful it is.

This book has gorgeous artwork and some interesting facts about birds. The suggestions about plants to attract birds are problematic for US gardeners, however, because it includes some invasive species. I was disappointed that there was no discussion about the vital importance of planting natives in order to attract and supply the insects that birds depend on to raise their young.

I was somewhat disappointed with this book. It was fairly basic and it did not include some plantings that birds, bees and butterflies flock to (coneflowers). I was drawn to this book because it had an attractive cover and planting for garden birds is of interest to me. Perhaps the fact that it was printed in the U.K. caused some of the discrepancies.

I snuggled down this evening to read this lovely little gardening book, all about making my garden a better place for birds. 🐦

This is a charming little book with lots of tips and ideas. It talks about specific species of birds, ways to feed them, help them nest, bath and drink water. As well as which flowers to plant to attract them and insects that they'll eat. Birds are a natural insect repellent so having them in your garden is really beneficial, plus it's just lovely isn't it hearing the birds singing in your garden. It's one of those simple precious things we can all enjoy if you take a moment to.

I really like the idea of helping wildlife in the garden it makes me really happy knowing that I can help nature in little ways via my very own outdoor space. ❤️ Re-wilding our back garden is a fantastic way to begin. 🥰

This was a very quick little read which I found very interesting, I can't wait to see more birds in the garden and spot different species that come to visit. ❤️

I'm glad to see that the author addresses the commons misconceptionnof Corvids being a main problem of declinging songbird numbers. But I read with horror that she genuinely recommends using a sonic device to deter cats! Those devices are incredibly painful if you're lucky enough to still have good hearing and they are hugely damaging to animals hearing. I cannot believe that someone recommends them in a guidebook. Hence 2 stars. Otherwise some interesting plant suggestions but everything is mainly covered at surface level.

Such a wonderfully interesting dip in to book full of relevant information to guide & encourage all.
Lovely and tactile, a simply beautiful cover & full of delicately colourful illustrations….. lovely.
