Silence Jones is whispered about on the streets, and referred to as the Quiet Man or the Shadow. In the series, the organization he works for seeks justice and rights wrongs. While Jones isn’t a superhero, he gets the job done and has created quite the name for himself. I love how people whispered his name and tells stories about him. No one is really sure if he is a man or myth.

The story is gritty and engaging from the perspective of the criminals to the man himself. The arsons and extortions case he is working in Sarasota, Florida, reminds Jones of a case he worked in New Orleans. I enjoyed getting to know the character and his backstory.

I am not sure if I should have listened to this by release date. This novella was released after book two but touted as a prequel. The author states each novel works as a standalone, but recommends you start with book one. I will update this review after I listen to the first two full length audios. For now, I will tell you I liked Silence Jones, and his mad skills. He may right wrongs, but he is human and flawed. Silence is a man of few words which adds to his mystic, but the author allows us to hear his inner monologue, giving us a sense of who he is and how he thinks.

In Deadly Silence we revisit a case Silence worked when he was Jake Rowe, an undercover cop working his way up the ladder in the Farone crime family. Silence and two others from the Farone crime family travel to New Orleans. There they assisting a local crime family with an extortion and protection gig. Undercover as Peter Hudson, we learn about the case that turned Jake into the Silence Jones.

The author pulled me in and kept me engaged. I love the concept of the series and look forward to learning more and joining Silence on fresh cases. While I have not listened to The Suppressor or Hush, Hush it appears as if each book features a mission with plenty of action, suspense, and kickassery.

Gary Bennett narrates and does a brilliant job capturing Jones’ personality. His tone and pacing as well as the additional voices for secondary characters and villains made listening a pleasure. Bennett was the perfect choice for Silence Jones.

This book is number 0.5 in the Silence Jones series, a novella which introduces the character of Silence Jones, the voiceless assassin.

The series is new to me as is the author and the narrator but it sounded like my kind of thriller and I was eager to give it a go. I prefer audiobooks as I rarely get a chance to sit and read but as a van driver I can listen while working, walking, hiking, doing chores etc. so listening suits my needs.

The action starts straight away in this very well written story and had me hooked from the first few minutes. The story flits back and forth from today to the past, building a detailed back story for the character as it progresses. This helps the reader get into the mind of Silence Jones for his later endeavours and gives more understanding to who is is and what happened to make him who and what he is today.

The novella is listed as a stand alone thriller but I’d strongly suggest starting with this as some of the next book, book 1, will make more sense if you know the back story.

Anyway, it’s a great start to the series, an interesting and well structured main character and simply put, a great read.

As I’ve said in previous reviews a poor narrator can ruin the best of books but a good narrator can’t save a poor story. The good news is that Gary Bennett, the narrator, gives a stellar performance, giving life to the characters in his reading and is a pleasure to listen to, someone I’d be happy to see listed as the narrator in future.

A solid 5 stars all round for Deadly Silent

I requested and received a free copy of this audiobook (thank you) and am voluntarily writing an honest and unbiased review.

If you have listened to any of the other action-packed and shadowy “Silence Jones” series authored by Erik Carter, “Deadly Science” is a novella covering the beginning of our protagonist, silence Jones himself. The audiobook edition is made even better with the exceptional narration performed by Gary Bennett, who also narrates the wonderful “Dragon Mage” series. I have previously reviewed two of the authors other books in this series and it was good to learn more background information about the main character along with what makes him tick. If you enjoy covert organizations, mysterious operations, and plenty of revenge seeking action, this is a great series to pick up and give it a listen. I was surprised at the amount of detail the author could provide in a novella of just over 3 hours long. For me, it was well worth the listen.

This novella, along with all the others in the series, opens with action and suspense. I like when a story grabs my attention and does not let go. I also like that the main character is consistent and has a purpose across the series, and in this novella, we begin to see why. Subtle things like his special business card and how he presents it to his clients just seems to fit him. This includes this limited speaking, but when he does, it matters. I found the details on the Watchers along with some additional background on this special organization important to understand when looking back on the other audiobooks from the series. A few, “ah ha” moments are always welcome, and in this novella, I was given a few.

Additionally, I found the passion and compassion of our main character when coming face-to-face with corruption and racketeering against those who are helpless to stop it. His desire to right wrongs is critical to his motivation. However, I would have taken a less violent path myself, but then again, I’m not Mr. Jones. We see his desire to save his friends from falling to deep into the mire of crime syndicates even if it means he will get hurt himself.

The audiobooks narration was performed by Gary Bennett, and I have come to enjoy his voice no matter the content. His voice is smooth, and he does a great job articulating the words on each page. The audio recording is always high quality and the narration professionally performed. Each of the characters feels distinct and has their own personality even when voiced by a single person. I did not note any issues with the audio itself.

For parents and younger listeners, this audiobook contains some mature content including the use of profane language and some rather graphic scenes of violence. I would not recommend it, or the series, for younger audiences. If you have previously listened to any of the audiobooks, then you know what you can expect in this one.

In summary, this is a good novella giving the listener a glimpse into the workings and personality of our main character. There is plenty of action to keep the listener engaged while also revealing some of the softer or gentler sides of Mr. Jones. The narration was clean and clear, and the voicing of each character felt alive and unique. A good series to pick up and a great novella so we can better know who Mr. Jones is and why he acts the way he does.

One man outwits and kills several unsavory crooks - 4 stars

The Quiet Man uses his skills to right wrongs and bring justice. (He can't fly, he doesn't have x-ray vision but he can move quickly and quietly.) Deadly Silence is an easy reading novella about a man with a mission. He is challenged to talk and sometimes writes a few words to get his message across.

A petty criminal is motivated to take over a small but well-known city, Sarasota, Florida. The Quiet Man is assigned to stop the criminals who are burning people's houses.

You find that the Quiet Man still thinks quite a lot about his ex-girl friend, CC. She helped his unfocused mind to slow down and reason. She is dead now. He misses her but takes her lessons to heart.

The Quiet Man is a killer with a conscience. You might jump when he growls. You can't help but respect him and his mission...unless you are his target. His targets get the message, fear and the end of their existence.

I'm really enjoying the Silence Jones series, and this is no exception. I read books 1 and 2, then this - which is supposed to be an "introductory novella". But I think maybe that's the right order. At any rate, it was no problem to read them in that order. In fact, I liked it that way. Also - very importantly for me - there were no cliffhangers, just a continuation of he characters. This is a quick read (about 140 pages), and it fleshes out more of Silence's character. I appreciate that he is strong, lightning quick, and well-trained... but not infallible. He sometimes struggles with knowing what to do, and with ethical questions. These books pull me in and I am looking forward to the next one.

I did receive a free copy of this book, but this is my honest opinion.

Silence Jones is real although some think he's a shadow some even think he's a figment of their imagination, he dishes out justice to those who were never given the justice they really deserved, but his job is an assassin and if you're the bad guy you don't stand a chance. In this episode, Silence is sent to sort out a series of arsons and protection racket that people paid over and was stolen and the poor wretched souls were told to pay again with added interest. It also has a connection to his past, it's a gritty tale not for the faint-hearted. The novel is not exceptionally long but exciting just the same.

I received a copy of this book from the author. I had the opportunity to review or not.

This is the first book of the Deadly Silence series I have read. I thoroughly enjoyed it and intend to read more of the series. The prelude of the series gives information about who Deadly Silence is, how he got this name, among others, and an insight into how DS makes his living.

Trained to be lethal, DS sets out to eliminate some very dangerous people. In the unfolding tale we learn about his past, some of it, and how he came to be who he is now. This is an entertaining and intriguing book. I highly recommend this book and look forward to learning more and joining him in his future adventures.

Eric did what a prequel needs. He ties all of the bits and pieces you might have scratched your head about and put it into one good, smart little book. "Silence" had a history and he had a life that had holes in it. The holes are filled and they are quite astounding.
Eric, the author, makes it a necessary read to get the full effect of the books to follow.
Good feel story that asks the author for more books with this cast and crew of characters.

Deadly Silence shows just who Silence Jones is and where he got his name and his voice. Having read the two books with this totally amazing new character, a new one for Erik Carter. I just love how he's turned his life into helping anyone who needs his type vengeance. So gentle with his blind neighbour...ruthless with anyone who deserves it.
An excellent book. I wholeheartedly recommend all of the Silence Jones books. I can hardly wait for the next....

Didn’t enjoy the short story.

I’ve read other books by this author and enjoyed them. The books about Silence, maybe different and better. I had trouble with the main character not able to speak. The basic info given was ok and told a little about Silence, but it wasn’t enough for me to overcome the not being able to speak.

There's a reason he's called the Quiet Man. You won't hear him coming, you won't hear him leave. But woe unto you if you have been abusing the downtrodden, those who disappear into the city's background without any acknowledgement.

We are introduced to Silence Jones, so named for very good reason. There is a lot left to learn, hence the start of the series.

This is a novella in between books 2 and 3 in the series, so it was easy to read it quickly. Despite it being a novella, it didn't let up in the amount of action involved (thankfully). Another very enjoyable read in this thrilling series. Hopefully not too long to wait until the next one.

Yet another good book, well written and difficult to put down. It is a novella so is quite short and can be read in one sitting. Would recommend especially if you are short on reading time.

A great introduction to a vigilante series.
It provides the motivation for the main character but, does not include unnecessary blood and gore.
I have the next three in the series on my Kindle now too.

origin story

I read Suppressor first and had wondered about the New Orleans job that was referred to several times in that story. It was good to get the beginning of the events leading up and his “rebirth”.
