A woodcutter, despite all odds, makes a life for himself and a young boy. Takes place in the early days of Dakota Territory where the riverboats required wood for their boilers, and the woodcutter and his young friend supply the wood, earning enough to build a foundation for future happiness. The woodcutter finds that money cannot buy the kinds of happiness and his wife want. Another western from the pen of R. O. Lane.
For the most part this is a good book. It has a good moral baseline and is believable in that Grit makes something of his life despite having major disadvantages to start. The reason for only 3 stars is that the author has a freakish fetish with Rape. Way too many of his books have the main love interest being raped. Honestly, it’s becoming repetitive, and frankly, unnecessary too advance the story. Seriously Mr Lane, can you not find a better way to show how good or how much the MC loves his woman without resorting to a RAPE scene.
I have to say what an absolute joy it was to read something so uplifting when the world seems to grab our joy and suck the happiness from us daily. Grit and his family toil through the worst of times but because of their love for one another life comes out right. You will laugh and cry but mostly you'll want to emulate the good will this family brings out in all of us. We can do better. We should do better. We can change lives even in the little things. Loved this book!
I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars !!!! It's about a man and his young man become life long friends, he works hard for a better life for everyone around him and his family. Very heart warming. You should be very proud Mr. R. O. Lane. To say I enjoyed this book is an understatement....❤
R. O. Lane has crafted a perfect story of the men & women who suffered hard times, helped others and developed families that any would be proud of. Grit & Colleen grew up in poverty, were abandoned in different ways but headed west separately in the mid 1800s to find a new life. Along the way, Grit adopted an orphaned street boy, Pauli, and together they built a life in the Dakota wilderness as Woodcutters selling lumber. Along the way, they rescued Colleen from a heartbreaking occupation, experienced a kidnapping, endured winter blizzards and added an orphaned baby girl, Astrid, to the group. Grit & Colleen & Astrid moved to Lincoln, NE where Grit had sent Pauli to college, then sent Colleen to college to be a teacher. Grit grew a successful family lumber business, survived the depression of the early 1880s and enjoyed a dozen grandkids.
R.O you have done it again I have every book and each one I have to finish with out putting it down. You have that unique talent that makes you part of plot. This book tells of the life of a big man who worked hard at every thing he did and who gave love to his family and friends and protected them and wouldn’t show any mercy to anyone who would try and hurt them.
Story about an orphan who became wealthy. I felt as if I was living during the late 1800's. The main character overcame many obstacles. He has strong will to survive. I wanted him to succeed. I would recommend this book as a historical novel.
The story was fast moving and I did not want it to end.I couldn't wait to read next chapter. I was able to visualize the main character so clearly.I thoroughly enjoyed it. Would recommend as excellent read.
Parents who are in their 20s need to read this book , it's full of life's lessons. My on life has shown or taught me life is a compromise, and nothing in life worth while comes without effort .My father was a career military man and my childhood was fairly strict and work was definitely a part of my learning experience. I am happy to say the lessons he taught me has paid off.
Grit Milburn left at an orphanage when he was two years old
Grit Milburn was thrown out of the orphanage at 16 for fighting, it didn’t matter he was defending himself. His mother left a note pinned to his shirt with his name explaining she couldn’t feed him or care for him. It was because of that name he learned to fight. He spent three of his growing years cutting down trees for free. He meets another homeless boy who becomes best friends. This book is so good
Sometimes we don’t know what kind of story we are going to read but this author’s books are always unique and a pleasant surprise. Orphan’s and children seem to be a reoccurring theme. In this story the main character is the orphan. The man he grew to be was amazing! He was such a hard worker and he loved and gave so much to the people in his life.
I so genuinely look forward to the author's stories but I had to read this twice. And cried both times too. If you enjoy stories of rampant sex and vile language look elsewhere. Protagonists don't need to abuse their women by word or fist. Right does eventually triumph. But isn't that why we buy westerns anyway? And the journey is so enlightening it gives you your own sense of accomplishment. That's a huge reward of its own.
This book will grab you from page one until the end. It will bring through a mans life over the years. How adversity, hardship, and true grit will get you through. A man who stared with but shared what little he had and did that all his life. How he impacted every living person he came contact with. His ultimate guiding thing in his life was family. Diff whirly read this page turner.
Not the average western romance drama that R.O.Lane usually gives even though they are mostly 5 STARS; so is this read 5 STARS. It feels like the author put a little more personal something into the characters into this one, but I don't know for sure. I felt the love for the wood cutter Grit & acknowledgement of his deep abiding good hard loving self in the writing of this story.
Another good western from R.O. Lane. Grit Millburn abandoned by his mother and raised in an orphanage. Heads to Dakota territory with his young partner to cut wood to sell to the riverboats floating down the Missouri river. Note: book don't tell you how many minutes is left in each chapter just entire book.
This book is so good. I really enjoyed this was hard to put down. I could not help thinking if there were people in this world like Britt the wood cuter it would be a wonderful place to live in. I loved how it touched my heart to read about the wood cuter. I so recommend this book.
Always enjoy R.O. Lane books . Grid was thrown out of the Catholic school for fighting and went through several years struggling to improve his life. He took a 15 year old Pauline and taught him the skills of wood cutter and hard work. Looking forward to the next book by RO Lane.
I was drawn to this book by the reviews I read. Though the storyline was a not my usual type of read, I was glad I read it.
Sit back and relax and read a really good book . I am so glad I have read this story. This is a story I would ecommend to every person. Humor and grit , with great life-lessons.
This was one of the most heartwarming stories I've ever read! It tells of a child who was mistreated from a very young age and how he overcame the trials in life by honesty, hard work, and strong values of right and wrong . Thank you Mr. Lane for this wonderful book!! I will look forward to reading more of your books!
Started of well and got better and better right through the whole book a bit difficult to put down much too the anoince of my wife your dinner is on the table then your dinner is in the dog reading a great story took me out of this difficult time took me and my grumpy self to somewhere else and cheered me up keep writing you guys we need you
One might observe that this novel was unrealistically positive from beginning to end. I found it a refreshing respite from the seemingly unending dire circumstances and vitriol of the present. The main characters are well developed, and the story is well crafted and told.
Mr. Lane continues his wonderful stories with yet another tale you don’t want to end. Life is a struggle at best most of the time and often it ‘s all about what kind of person we want to be and what we make of our lives. Strength begats strength and weakness begats weakness. I recommend you take a look at this offering, I think you will enjoy it as much as I did.
I enjoyed this book from top to bottom. First page to last. It is more than a great story, it has a great lesson in ethics and morals and love in the greatest of senses. The story of Grit's life was interesting in itself, the scenery and history were just made it perfect. Thank you RO Lane, good job.
This is probably one of the best books I have ever had the pleasure of reading. I started it and couldn't stop until I finished it. R. O. Lane has written a book that is so riveting that it cannot be put down, but must be finished. I have read most of his books but this one captured me and I could not put it down.
This is the 2nd R.O. Lane book I have read and both have been fantastic! Follow Grit, from his work in the rock Quarry to his befriending Paulie and their voyage west. Being a woodcutter is what Grit does best and they lean into the task. Through all there adventures, Grit meets and marries Collen and the adventures continue.
This a story about a man that gave so much in love for his family, friends and even strangers there is no way it can be measured. A story worth reading over and over, especially when you are feeling life is passing you by. Put your feet in his shoes and move forward!
This one left me in tears, a great story that grew into a really special storyline! I loved the wood cutting because of the hours spent with my grandfather who would drive into the mountains in a old beat up army truck to cut three cords of wood. The author is so talented!
R.O. Lane, your stories just get better and better. I had so many tears in my eyes at the end, I didn't want the story to end. God bless you and the characters you create. This one made me think of another great woodworker/woodcutter and his sacrifices for us all. I'd readily give this story six stars if I could.
I start looking for new books by the author long before they are out. Wish I could find other authors about decent people with happy endings. I have been house bound with covid and health issues and have reread many stories. Wish he could get more stories out.
I look forward all Mr. Lanes books but this tugged at my heart. I have to admit that I had tears in my eyes at the end. Thank you sir for the pleasure I get from your books and look forward to the next one.
Mr. Lane has produced another excellent story of an orphan boy, who became a husband, friend, father, grandfather, hard working wood cutter. Frog's love and selflessness could be a boon for people today.
As always. Mr.Lane's books are worth the.time.to.read. The characters are.believe- able and interesting. An insight to.the life.and.times in the.late 1800 hundreds. I use read his books in one sitting.
