If you are interested in Indian history, this is a very useful book.

Jadunath Sarkar covers all the important wars in the history of India starting from the Battle between Alexander and Porus. Starting with the context of the battle, he goes on to explain the formations, the terrain, the tactics, the weapons, the composition and size of the armies and the key events which impacted the outcome of the battle.

The writer has used a lot of historical sources to put this together. As a reader, you are sometimes left unsatisfied and seek more detail but there is only so much information available in the chronicles left behind by the historians of the day.

You will learn a lot from this book. You will understand why the native Indian armies almost always were defeated by foreign invaders. It was a combination of faster horses, artillery and gunpowder, better armour and bows, better fighters and superior Warcraft. With some cunning and last minute switching of sides thrown in.

In the middle of this, you also see the genius of Bajirao. The Rajputs had valour but were also tactically naive. You realise that all Muslim fighters weren’t the same. The Turkish ones were superior to the Afghans.

Some people are missing. People like Krishnadeva Rai, Ranjit Singh, the British, the Guptas and Mauryas, the people down South, the Ahoms etc.

This book will whet your appetite. You will want to read more.

A splendid overview of how the war machines in Indian subcontinent developed over time. What I missed is the development of european styled platoons during the late 18th early 19th century that impacted the rise of the British rule. Many facets like Ganimi Kaawa and Pindharis are undermined. The great navy of the Siddis and Marathas also does not find any place in this book. An exciting read but keeps the reader unsatisfied.
