Who's Next...?: Tales from the Southwest Pacific Theater in WWII

Rate this book
The decisions surrounding the tactics used on Maj Richard Bong's last mission have been shrouded in mystery for over 70 years. Now, find out what really happened on that fateful flight as told by a surviving flight member, 1LT Floyd Fulkerson. Who's Next...? is an introduction to the history of the United States Army Air Force combat in the Southwest Pacific Area during World War II. Culled from combat reports, personal involvement, and associate flyer's recollections, these are the stories of the men who fought the air war over the ocean, islands, and jungle. The stories included are told from both the American and Japanese point of view and covers the 1942-1945 period of the war.

War Stories

This is not a well-written and well-edited book but it is important history. I wanted to read it because my Dad’s WWII experience occurred along side it. Dad was a bombardier, eventually the senior bombardier, for the 5th AF, 22nd Bomb Group, Red’s Raiders that served at all the bases - Moresby, Dobadura, Nadzab, Biak right up into the Philippines, depicted by this author.
So I learned something about Dad’s experiences from this narrative.
But this work cries for editing, punctuation, paragraphing to help readers through it. I was motivated because of the subject and my Dad’s associations to it. Others might find it too much work to get through.

Good stuff

I read this with a keen interest having flown fighter/attack for the Marine Corps only 25 years after Bong’s death. Today, in 2023, I think of my squadron mates who died both in combat and in training. Brave men all. I want to get a hard copy of this book (I read it on Kindle) and give it to my grandchildren to read before next Memorial Day. Those we lost deserve so much more reserve than furniture sales, hotdogs, and beer.Buy this book, read it, and remember with pride that our country produced these men and never forget what they did for us.

Common sense

Author is dedicated to actual facts, personally gathered, and a good guide to the personalities and methodologies of the great fighter pilots of the South Pacific. He couches it all in conversations and retold stories, and never fails to give credit. A good read for a thorough student of those campaigns.

Warrior pilots in the South Pacific

Unusual narratives of both US and Japanese pilots as told by relatives and survivors. Intense battles over just a few years in the South Pacific Theatre during WWII. it’s a good read for those wanting to learn about the twin-engine P38 fighter in the pacific.

Tales From the Southwest Pacific Theater in WWII

This historical insight was crafted by the author who was an
acquaintance of a very sharp wwII pilot. Because of the great
memory and deep emotion of this true storyteller the tales of
our greatest pilots are retold in exciting detail.

I realize authors must write words to make a living but putting in all the ###### about fishing and the weather, etc., seemed a waste of good paper to me.
A book just on the war itself was expected and was when actually written, quite interesting but a 20-page booklet would probably be all that is of relevance out of the entire book.

Easy to read story of the P38 aces in the South Pacific

I picked up this book because I have always admired the P38 and I am a Wisconsin native familiar with the history of Richard Bong. This book is easy to read and tells the story of several of the pilots who flew the fork tailed devil in the South Pacific.

My 11 year-old history obsessed son read this book off kindle marking it in my Goodreads account! Can’t be the first this has happened to someone. I’ll have to ask him why he enjoyed this book so much but mostly I love that he’s reading. If other jibberish reviews after 5 star reads with a strong nonfiction, historical vibe come along…probably him and not me.
