Fighting erupts between cast and crew, as the fictional film becomes Cinéma vérité, and their sadistic director begins to document the bloody carnage of the terrifying beast.

This perfectly captured the feel of an old Friday the 13th film. You have a group of rowdy people, trying to film a low budget horror film in the woods, and they get entangled with a family of bigfoots. Death and chaos ensue as they face a merciless and unstoppable monster. Now what really stuck out to me here was how the author didn't necessarily reinvent the wheel with the concept, but put enough fresh spins in here to make it a great time. But not so much as to take away from the loads of tense chases and blood and guts and all the good stuff you hoped would be in a book with this title. The focus on the bigfoots was a nice change of pace, as a lot of the time they just pounce on campers or military men doing drills, slaughtering them for no reason. For reference, as an example, see basically any book from Eric S. Brown. But this story gave the animals a nice background, emotion, and enough of a motive to make the story sensible. And when all hell breaks loose, the daddy bigfoot reminded me of Nemesis from Resident Evil 3. It wasn't in every single scene, but when it was absent, it was still a menacing presence throughout. And when it arrived, it made an impact, both figuratively and literally. I also liked how Rob took on a similar role to Carl Denham in King Kong, putting his prized film over the safety of himself and his crew. The character drama was just enough and never came across badly, too. But everything flowed beautifully and this was an awesome creature feature. David Irons has a new fan in Peter Topside.

David Irons does it again!

Onion Mountain, Oregon. 1981. A film crew wrapping up their slasher 'Mountaintop Madman Massacre',  runs into a big problem.  At the conclusion of their filming, the real horror begins when something pissed off and furry comes barreling out of the woods with only one thing on its mind:  slaughter all the humans.
And now with the crew dispersed, minds reeling, there is no escape from Bigfoot as he hunts. Is Bigfoot the only thing the crew has to fear? Find out in this blood soaked wilderness mayhem.  Five big feet for this one!

Bigfoot.

If you know me then you know I have a teeny obsession with all things Bigfoot and let me tell you this Bigfoot story was so much fun. I don't think I've ever hated a group of people more then the cast and crew of Mountaintop madman massacre. Bigfoot got all my love in this one. Blood, Gore and a fun storyline.
I'm really loving David Irons books.

Great read! I love all things cryptid or Bigfoot and this was awesome. The situation the characters found themselves stuck in, the twists, and the KILLS were all over the top, and filled with bloody violence! 4/5 Bigfoot skulls 💀

Set in the 80s, you immediately get that 80s retro, nostalgic vibe. And this book definitely reads like a horror movie from that time! It's fun, campy and gory, and stars a killer cryptid! So, what could possibly go wrong when filming a low-budget Slasher movie in the mountains where said cryptid resides….?

Well, buy the book, read it, and I guess you'll find out! That's it, that's the review! 🤷‍♀️

I'm kidding, ok?

A young creature's curiosity, innocence and wonder, quickly turn to anguish and pain for its distraught father, and then angry, relentless and brutal retribution is sought.
And we see loyalty and friendship go out the window to get the best footage for a movie.

This was SO much fun, an unputdownable romp through the mountains of madness, blood soaked and brilliantly descriptive. An entertaining, addictive, fully immersive read, with a smooth flowing and snappy narrative, and great character building.

Irons teases you along with little tidbits and red herrings, ramping up the anticipation, and the short, sharp chapters help keep those pages turning and the excitement building constantly.

Lots of brilliantly gnarly kills, which are written in such a way you can't help but feel sorry for Mr. Bigfoot.
So full of action, this goes 100 mph through the bloody trails of Onion Mountain. Bigfoot out here breaking bodies and minds…..savagely.

Oh, and then there's that brilliant twist of an ending! 😮

Every time I read a new book by David, it becomes my new favourite! 🖤

If you could get past the intense gore of this book - the story itself was interesting and the action pretty quick around page 50. Not my favorite Bigfoot story but not the worse either. The thing that disturbed me the most was the mother and baby. Really couldn't blame the male bigfoot after that.

I know a lot of people like the gore but I'm not one of them. I don't need to read how someone's innards became outards - I have an imagination. It kind of cheapens the book, in my humble opinion.

Overall, decent and quick read. Took me longer because I couldn't read over the weekend.

I wanted to start the best month of the year with a fun book and boy did I make the right choice. Just look at it! Title and cover give a pretty good idea of the kind of wonderful B-movie quality you're getting yourself into.

With that, the dialogue and characters could be a bit cheesy but I wouldn't say in a bad way more so in the just right way. After a solid prologue, we get into the set up and character intros, and I quite liked that this centered around a film crew shooting a Slasher movie in the woods before they run into the furry kind of trouble we're here for. While these characters by no means were incredibly deep it still helped to get to know them a bit to enjoy their arcs under the later attack, there will be some dark turns which I was all here for. And having a film shoot as the backdrop is always a great choice. Not sure if that's what made this story so cinematic but it all popped off the page and played a literal movie in my mind (btw, with the right kind of effects, I'd watch an adaptation. There are hardly any good Bigfoot movies out there, so...).

But the true star is, of course, Bigfoot. And that was initially my one field of criticism and had me a bit worried about how this would all go. Thing is, we do get some chapters from the POV of the Cryptid. I was not a fan of how they were written and what they contributed. I feel like they were maybe necessary to get the plot going (though with some changes we could have still gotten to the same result differently) and to create sympathy for the big guy. I get why Irons wanted to show them not as monsters only but I still didn't like these chapters and was glad once that was over and this was all carnage. Oh, it's so much carnage. I am going back and forth on whether if Extreme Horror is my thing or not and honestly I am not sure this fully qualifies because if I liked it it can't be Extreme, right? Point is, whether I personally enjoy the over the top gore is up to how it's done in the details (I know, nitpicky!) and here I had a wonderful time watching people being damaged in the worst kind of ways.

Then there's the ending which is whooo, bit of an extra punch that aims for the guts but goes all the way through. It's dark and mean and I wondered if Irons had seen "The Prey" from 1983 which I coincidentally had watched for the first time in September. There is some overlap but I think this book did it a bit better. I'll always be a fan for a non-happy, devastating ending.

A Great Monster novel

Really enjoyed reading David Irons' novel about Bigfoot hunting a film crew who invaded his territory. It's bloody fun and recommended if you are a fan of monster movies or monster stories.

I judged it by its cover, and it lived up to my expectations. It has the aroma of 80s slasher movies all over, and the result is an entertaining, gore-filled, body count story that gets to the point. The only drawback is there are several spelling/ grammatical errors, but given the subject matter it's almost fitting.

While finishing shooting a horror film, the crew get more then they bargained for when the final explosive scene takes place. Accidentally killing a big foots family, the male goes on a revenge killing spree. As the crew are slowly killed off, escape is a long way off, as they turn on each other, with some good twists.

Dark and satirically (I hope) funny. Quick read. The following quotes give you some idea of what you're in for:

"Tony was throwing punches at Bigfoot, bobbing and weaving in and out."

"Bigfoot was on him now...folding his body up like a concertina that only played the sounds of pain and agony."

I read a lot of horror novels for the month of October, so this one came up as "you might like this one". The cover got me, and I thought it might be a fun read. It captured the essence of the late 70's- early 80's slasher/creature movies perfectly. Just when you think it can't get any more ridiculous, another little twist is thrown in and the action amps up even more.

For a short book, there was actually some character development - more than expected. And a nice twist. Not your run of the mill 80s thrasher. Very fun read.
