Although Jim Jarmusch is best known for his storied career in independent cinema, over the years he has produced hundreds of pieces of collage art, the majority of which has been rarely seen by the public. Drawing inspiration from the largest medium of cultural documentation―newspapers―Jarmusch delicately crafts each work by layering newsprints on cardstock. Doppelgänger Andy Warhols are posed in a vast tunnel not unlike the depths of the Large Hadron Collider, Patty Hearst’s mugshots drift across Edwardian portraits, and a man’s identity is disguised with a coyote’s maybe he was a celebrity, politician, perp, or all three. In Some Collages, these small-scale (notecard-size) pieces not only pay homage to the documentation medium but are a reminder of how even mundane images can be reconfigured into work that is alternatively funny, scary and strange.
James R. "Jim" Jarmusch is an American independent filmmaker. Jarmusch is a major exponent of independent cinema, particularly that of the 1980s and 1990s.
Such a strange little book! Perhaps if I had better facial recall I might have gotten more out of it. But discorporating faces from bodies made it extra hard for me to figure out who was in the image (I assume sometimes they were not supposed to be famous people... maybe?). But, hey, I guess it is somewhat amusing that some dude got a book of his random hobby published.
The format of this book is like a small photo album. The edges of the images are carefully hand torn. Faces are pasted over the figures. Maybe others are more familiar with who the faces and figures belong to. I could identify Prince, Putin and Albert Einstein. Not a very good average. Could this be some private joke?
Scored this beautiful unique art book at Half Price Books! It's a collage artist (Jim Jarmusch) that I had never seen of before so am happy to add him to my collection. If you don't know me well, I've loved creating with collage art often in my work over the years.
