A fake fiancée. An alive deceased husband. Samantha’s life just got more complicated.
When Stella MacInerney asks Samantha to be her maid of honor, she's surprised. The woman has enough stepdaughters from her three previous marriages to ask one of them. Why didn’t she? Then Leo asks Samantha to be his plus one to the wedding, as his fake fiancée. What’s up with that? So when Stella is kidnapped the eve of her wedding it’s up to Samantha to get to the bottom of these mysteries. Samantha vows three things:
1. Find Stella’s kidnappers and make them pay. She can’t wait to use her highest voltage stun gun on this bad guy. 2. Discover why Leo needs a fake fiancée? Who knew he had a past with the wedding planner? And when asked, he clams up. 3. Track down a key eyewitness in Stella’s disappearance who is a dead ringer for Carson. Could her dead husband really be alive?
When Stella’s ransomed for three million dollars, Samantha has twenty-four hours to find her alive. All while pretending to be engaged to Leo to keep the smiling devil of a wedding planner at bay, never mind Samantha's facing her own matrimonial past. Samantha doesn’t know how she’ll feel if the witness turns out to be Carson. But she might just have to use her highest voltage stun gun on him, too. Unless her fake fiancée does it first.
Hey! I’m Kristi. I write romances that will tug your heartstrings and laugh out loud mysteries. In all my stories you’ll fall in love with the cast of characters, they’ll become old, fun friends. My one hope is that I create stories that satisfy any of your book cravings and take you away from the rut of everyday life (sometimes it's a good rut).
When I’m not writing I’m spinning (riding a stationary bike, repurposing Happy Planners, or drinking a London Fog (hot tea with frothy milk).
I’m the mom of 2 and a milspouse (retired). We live in the Pacific Northwest and are under-prepared if one of the volcanoes erupts. Here are 3 things about me: • I lived on the outskirts of an active volcano (Mt.Etna) • A spider bit me and it laid eggs in my arm (my kids don’t know that story yet) • I grew up in Central Florida and have skied in lakes with gators.
I’d love to get to know you better. Join my Read & Relax community and then fire off an email and tell me 3 things about you! Not ready to join? Email me or follow me here. Thanks for popping by!

Sam's life is satisfyingly complex. She has a solid group of friends who have her back. Most importantly, I think, her group is growing. She might not always know what she's doing when the dangerous situations explode around her, but I think people admire her gung-ho attitude. Either that or they're horrified and appalled at how often she rushes headlong into danger. I'm looking at you, Leo. Horrified and appalled, amirite?
To be fair, Sam is trying to be more mindful of those dangerous situations. Mostly. She might have tailed a guy on the freeway, but she totally had Leo on the phone the entire time giving him a play-by-play. She's also getting better about asking for help and communicating in general. (Especially with Leo. Can you tell I like those two together? Because I do.)
And that whole thing with Carson? MAN, am I glad her family and Leo have her back with that one.
A kidnapping or two, a drive-by shooting, a stalled wedding, a wedding-planner ex who Leo wants to avoid, money drops, street thugs with very few brains between them, and the potential for all that simmering sexual tension to finally spill over between Leo and Sam. (admittedly, the last one might be mostly wishful thinking on my part, FOR NOW, but I REALLY like those two together.)
Samantha is getting ready to be Maid (Matron?) of Honor for a dear friend. However, before the rehearsal dinner, the bride to be has disappeared. She had been headed to the groom's house to pick up his wedding gift. Samantha, who is a private investigator and her friend Leo, who is police, go to the groom's house to see where the bride is. There is evidence that the bride has been abducted.
Samantha gets herself involved in the investigation and puts her life on the line several times. This book is a lot more than a cozy mystery. I love the characters. Samantha is smart, resourceful, and perhaps a bit reckless. I recommend this book for young readers through mature.
Although this book is part of a series, you don't need to have read any of the previous books to read and enjoy this one.
I was provided with an advance reader copy by the author. This is my honest review.
Really enjoyed this one. Samantha is growing on me, she’s not as reckless, she’s learning to work WITH her team, including the Sheriff :) to solve mysteries. Leo needs Sam to be his “fake date/fiancé to head of an ex at the wedding they’re both attending, if they wedding happens given that the bride is now missing. With Sam and Leo on the case, Sam has to figure out if the sightings of her dead husband Carson is real, dodge bullets, live through car chases, and figure where her relationship with Leo is headed. Overall, this was a fast paced, humorous, action filled, witty, installment in the Samantha True series.
Book was decent short read kept me intrigued, but I couldn’t tell whether or not at the end Sam and Leo were still pretending or not when it came to their relationship status. I wish there was a more definitive clarification on that. I liked that Sam was quirky but serious at the same time though parts of the way she acted seemed unrealistic of the situation. Maybe going back and listening to the others in the serious will change my opinion on where I stand with this book.
Not really my cup of tea. I didn't find it humorous, I felt that the 'perp' was obvious, and the whole story full of stereotypes. I need to stay away from so-called cozy mysteries since they annoy me, the characters all have atrocious diets (cinnamon rolls, breakfast burritos, milk shakes, etc. - just reading what she was eating made my stomach turn), and usually the whole situation is absurd. But the blurb I read about this book promised laughs. I failed to find them.
Sam and company are back for another fun adventure. This time it hits closer as Stella disappears and Sam must figure out what is going on. Of course there are a few more issues floating around but that added to all the fun. An entertaining story full of good characters and scenes that made me laugh out loud. Fun from beginning to end. Another good story in the life of Sam.
I am so in love with this series! I laugh out loud at so many things in this book. Kristi you always like to keep me on the edge of my seat with Sam and Leo. Sigh. Be still my heart! You never disappoint, each book just gets better and better! Read this series people!
I've thoroughly enjoyed these books, 1-4, and look forward to any forthcoming tales from this wonderful descriptive authoress, may her imagination please continue to enable her to write many more thrillers like these.
Samantha True is a proper hard head. Well she does headbutt one of the bad guys. She also likes to use her stun gun. This book has a bit of everything, mayhem, bad guys, romance and babies. Oh and a wedding. I can't wait to read what happens next.
Really love the Samantha True character and of course her ensemble of supporting characters, friends and villains! Also, so glad to see the Leo thing moving somewhere!
A wedding is planned but the bride gets kidnapped. Samantha must find the bride and relies on the fiancée (??) to help her. This was another fun book and looking forward to book 6 on audio.
3.5⭐️ This was another fun Samantha True story solving crimes, wondering if her dead husband was really dead, moving on with her life, and finding herself in dangerous situations.
