Once we belong to Him, we’re not only given a new identity; we’re ushered into a new reality—one that is sure, powerful, and life changing.
And so—
We have hope no matter our circumstances. We have assurances and resources, even in life’s trials. We are blessed in all things because we are chosen by Him.
Amanda Jenkins, before life as a homemaker and mother of four, worked in sales and marketing for a number of Christian retailers, as well as in visual communications and advertising. She spent ten years in L.A. alongside her film-making husband, surrounded by plastic surgery and high-falutin’ lifestyles, which is where she became convicted and inspired to write about her struggle with perfectionism. Amanda attended Northwestern Bible College and graduated with a degree in Biblical Studies and Communications. She has taught Bible studies for women of all ages for the past 14 years, and is passionate about communicating truth in a culturally relevant and humorous way. Today, she lives just outside of Chicago with her husband, Dallas, and their four young children, including their newly adopted son. She is also the daughter-in-law of Jerry B. Jenkins.
We went over the study guide in our women’s Bible study group. I liked the life application to it and how it would point out our weaknesses by pointing out the weaknesses in the characters in the chosen, but some of the questions were confusing, and sometimes they weren’t really correlated with what was going on in the episode of the chosen when going into the study for that episode specifically.
The study guide is really good for whenever you are watching the chosen you go through the study guide as you watch the chosen, they have three books for three seasons that I know of. I don’t know if they have the other books for the other seasons, but I would recommend the study guide if you are a big chosen fan, but other than that, I don’t think I would recommend this book because some of it was a little confusing and it was hard to go along with. And some parts of the book I was just biting my nails and reading just to get through it. My mom even said the same thing that it was just really hard to stay focused and enjoy the study. That probably is because it’s not really a biblical Bible based study guide it’s based off the TV show. But you do go in your Bible a little bit.
It wasn’t really compelling, but I would say it did encourage you to go in your word and read verses so that’s always a plus. But I’m kinda iffy on this it’s definitely a read that’s like oh yeah just read this book to read it. It’s not like I’m gonna redo this devotional.
This book is really just made for the fans of the chosen.
I was hoping to use this in a small group while watching The Chosen but it seemed the devotion had a different focus than the season 2 episodes.
The book did highlight something from The Chosen that I hadn't noticed about season 2 episodes. Each episode was highlighting a Beatitude which builds up to the season finale about the Sermon on the Mount. From there the bible study focused solely on the Beatitudes and sort of departed from interacting with the show it was supposed to be based on. The first Chosen devotion was much better at weaving the episodes, characters, and talking points together.
I hope they take this into consideration when season 3 comes out.
I looked at this book in my study on the Gospel of John. I have not watched "The Chosen" so that may color my review, but I did not care for this book. It is a devotional, but instead of quoting the Bible and making people reflect and draw application from that, more often imagined scenes with imagined characters from the show were quoted, and the application was drawn from these imagined things. That felt manipulative and a bit deceitful.
A helpful resource to unpack some of the major scenes from season 2 of "The Chosen". However, at times it felt like the workbook was either 1) trying to force you in a premeditated direction that did not align with the episode or 2) added content just for the sake of adding content.
Glad I picked it up this time, but I probably won't come back to it nor will I get the workbook for season 3.
I enjoyed reflecting on the episodes with my small group and the study guide questions usually led to personal stories, struggles, etc. The Chosen series truly brings the Gospels to life in such a humanly relatable way! So, of course I liked this work book because of the personal reflection involved and discussion it provoked.
I was so excited after reading the first book. After reading this book, I question why the authors changed their writing style from the first book. I felt like the writing in the first book had more details and explained things really well. This book didn't explain a whole lot but just mainly quoted the Bible.
The series The Chosen has captured my heart, and I am delighted to have the devotionals written to mesh with the seasons of the show and dive deeper into the message.
The devotional is well done giving lessons, insight, background, plenty of scriptural references and thought-provoking questions to engage the reader.
This was the second ‘Chosen’ Bible study I’ve done and it was ok. I thought the 3rd Chosen Bible study book was much better - questions, lay out, engaging.
I’m aware this is probably down to taste. I think the study is very accessible and possibly is more aimed at new Christians or people investigating Christianity.
So much better than the first season's Bible study!! This was so much more cohesive and practical! The questions were still sometimes leading, but there were more questions that asked us to delve into our personal relationship with Jesus. I highly recommend watching the episode before each lesson.
Great study of the Beatitudes in relation to the Chosen. A lot of the questions are very personal though so if you're using as a group study it might be difficult to get people to open up about their answers.
Great study on Sermon on the Mount! Great self reflective questions and awesome tool for a study group who wants to learn more about God and each other.
Read this book with Bible study group and watched the movie. It was so fun to be in a group reading and doing the work in the book together. I found myself being a lot like James in the book.
