Parks Pat Mystery #6

Hazard of the Hills

A Mighty Fall

This case might just leave Margie feeling nostalgic about the water deaths she has been investigating lately.

A woman is found at the bottom of a 70-meter drop. It is pretty clear from the beginning that she was killed in the fall.

But you can never be sure until the medical examiner’s report comes back. It would appear that there is a lot more to be investigated after all.
Maybe this close-knit community wasn’t quite all it appeared to be.

Hazard of the Hills - a review by Rosemary Kenny.

Calgary PD Homicide detective Margie Patenaude, aka Parks Pat, has no sooner waved her daughter Christina off on a trip, than fellow-officer Kaitlyn Jones calls her to say a woman's body's been found in the local Edworthy Park...not just a typical 'day at the office' for the department.
How the case unwinds is somewhat unexpected, but ultimately Pat and Kaitlyn solve not one, but two murders, and bring down corrupt politicians in high places, before spending quality time with her child.

PD Workman does it again and Parks Pat is a triumph.
Check out Hazard of the Hills today - you'll love it!

Accident or homicide?

Detective Margie Patenaude, a member of the Calgary Police service, is called to the scene of a death in Edworthy Park. First impressions of those on the scene lean toward this being an accidental death in which a woman fell over the side of a rather steep biking trail. First impressions are not always correct, however, and it soon looks like there may be more to this case than they first thought. This is another well-written, briskly-paced mystery featuring great characters, lots of interesting glimpses into Canada’s Indigenous culture, and a satisfying resolution all wrapped up in delightful quick-read police procedural by an author who could make a description of drying paint sound fascinating.

I was provided with an advance copy of this book, for which I thank the author, and I am voluntarily sharing my honest and unbiased review.

Detective Margie Patenaude is called to a scene where the victim is believed to have fallen to her death from the top of a steep cliff. Was it accidental or something more sinister? Another great book from Ms. Workman! Professionally crafted with an exceptional plot and well developed characters. Highly recommended. I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to her next one. I received a complimentary copy of this book and chose to write a voluntary, unbiased review.

Short, fast, easy to read and entertaining as the rest of the series. Even though this is #6 in the series, it's got the best plot. Unfortunately, all too realistic.

Detective Patenaude, known as Pat Parks, is off to another Calgary park to investigate a death from a fall down a steep cliff. It looks like an accident at first glance, but is it? She and her partner, Kaitlyn Jones, investigate to find out which it is, as they delve into the victim’s life. It’s definitely more complicated than it seemed at first! I enjoy these murders/mysteries, all taking place in the parks around Calgary, of which this is the fifth! I am on the author’s ARC team and review this book voluntarily.

HAZARD OF THE HILLS is the sixth book in the PARKS PAT MYSTERIES series and packed a lot into it. When a woman is presumed to have fallen down a hill that has a steep drop that bikers like to ride down it seems it can only be an accident, or is it? There was a lot of meat to this case as Margie and the other homicide detectives in Calgary, Canada try to gather the clues that go in various directions. The victim and her partner don't seem to share a lot besides their three year old daughter but that's only on the surface, or is it?

Once again I like how Margie and her teenage daughter interact with each other as well as with Margie's elderly grandfather. Their pride shines through for their heritage and we learn a little more about them in the telling of the story especially since a Canadian holiday is being celebrated.

This whodunnit had a lot of twists and turns and each clue had an impact in the solving of the case. As we are taken through the police procedural once again we see where their minds goes as each clue is unearthed and how those in the department bounce ideas off each other. It was interesting to see the use of drones in the gathering of evidence in this case. There is a good flow to the story and many new characters that impact this case. There is closure and an unexpected arrest. The title of the book is spot on and so is the cover.

Ms. Workman is an author whose many books I have enjoyed. I look forward to the continuation of this series as well as several others I am reading.

Hazard of the Hills is the sixth book in the Parks Pat Mysteries series by P.D. Workman.

Margie is called into another death in a Calgary park. She joins Detective Jones on the case of a woman who has fallen down a hillside.

This was an interesting case and I really liked how it wrapped up. I like how this series shows that police work is a lot of non-glamorous work. I find Margie’s GPS issues to be very relatable. The best part of this is Margie’s value of her family and culture. I look forward to seeing what is in store for Margie as this series continues.

I received an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Parks Pat is called out to another death scene. But this time there’s no water involved. It appears a woman has fallen down a rather steep biking trail. But as we all know, it’s not accidental until the coroner’s report is in. There’s a fair amount of investigation in this murder and another murder is found. I enjoyed this book. Great fast read.
