Vietnam War vet turned deep-sea treasure hunter Digger Sullivan scratches out a living, and this new commission is just another job—albeit an exciting one—off the Florida coast in 1977. But while exploring the area, Digger and his crew encounter one shark too many.
Reef and his shark shifter clan are charged with protecting a vital, magical secret—two of four scrolls that, when brought together, could annihilate shifters across the world. But Reef can’t keep his head in the game around this intriguing diver, and it’s not long before Digger takes one of the scrolls topside. Reef now has two missions: seduce Digger and recapture the scroll. Despite his attraction to Digger, Reef’s priority must be reclaiming the scroll.
For Digger’s part, he can’t keep his eyes off the flirty young man on his boat. While he doesn’t know what Reef could want with a scarred old vet, he’s not going to pass up an opportunity of pleasure. Unfortunately for Reef, he loses sight of his duty and all his plans go awry. Then Digger’s crew is captured by the very person who commissioned them, and Reef and his shark clan are the only things standing between them and death.
M.D. Grimm has wanted to write stories since second grade (kind of young to make life decisions, but whatever) and nothing has changed since then (well, plenty of things actually, but not that!).
Thankfully, she has indulgent parents who let her dream, but also made sure she understood she’d need a steady job to pay the bills (they never let her forget it!). After graduating from the University of Oregon and majoring in English, (let’s be honest: useless degree, what else was she going to do with it?) she started on her writing career and couldn’t be happier.
Working by day and writing by night (or any spare time she can carve out), she enjoys embarking on romantic quests and daring adventures (living vicariously, you could say) and creating characters that always triumph against the villain, (or else what’s the point?) finding their soul mate in the process.
As I said already, this series circles around, much like life. The two scrolls that Con and Quincy had on their voyage from England to the colonies (in book seven) sank to the bottom of the ocean when their ship did. They were rescued by Imelda, a master shifter and the one who helped them to establish Haven, but they left the scrolls where they were thinking no one could find them there. Well, it's now 1977, and technology has increased. In 'Predator and Prey', deep sea treasure hunter, Digger, and shark shifter, Reef, are going to find themselves in a battle against another reincarnation of the evil as they fight for the scrolls.
"He liked sharks. In the back of his mind he even thought this one was a strange sort of beautiful. A pale gray, with those soulless black eyes, it was a creature without doubt, hesitation, or fear. It was pure instinct, graceful and uncomplicated. A true lord of the ocean, one that had been around since the dinosaurs."
*great big shudder* No offense to Digger, but Jaws pretty much cured me of my childhood fascination with sharks. Digger's very first dive to take a look at the reef the heiress who hired him directed them to, puts him face to face with a great white shark. But not before he's found something rather interesting. Reef is stunned. He's never met a human who didn't react with pure fear at the sight of him charging out of the depths toward them (umm, duh). But this human faces him head-on, his heartbeat doesn’t even speed up, and now he's got one of the scrolls. Reef is dead if his clan finds out, or his alpha, a master shifter.
I've been following this series since 2011. I know what to expect by now. So no big complaint on everything because well I know what I will get. I did like the description of the deep water, or the first time Reef (in his shark form) met Digger. It felt majestic and eerie at the same time! I wouldn't be as calm if I have to look at shark right in the eyes *shudders*
NB: The prologue had an update of Con and Quincy from Hunted Guardian
Digger and his crew are hunting for treasure for a mysterious “heiress”. They don’t know what they’re looking for only where it is. When they dive deep to find it they are accosted by Great White Sharks!
Reef is a Great White Shark Shifter put in charge of guarding the scrolls (from the previous books) that protect Earth from destruction. Though he’s bored, he’s dedicated. When a man comes into his territory seeking the scrolls he’s intrigued by his bravery and warrior’s spirit.
Unexpectedly, Digger claims one of the scrolls and Reef has to join the crew as a human to seduce the scroll back into his care. Along the way he develops feelings for Digger.
When the heiress sends her henchmen after the scrolls both Digger and Reef must band together to save both the scrolls and their lives.

I LOVED the idea of a shark shifter! MD Grimm did a fantastic job of giving Reef “sharklike” qualities while in his human shape. Perhaps it’s some of that residual lack of emotion that made me feel a bit distanced from the relationship between Digger and Reef.
I never felt the connection (beyond the sex) between these guys and the mystery of the scrolls definitely overpowered the romance.
I’m typically a fan of the Shifter series but this left me a bit cold.
The writing was fine and the characters were fully developed and interesting, but the romance just wasn’t there for me. It also ends on an HFN of which I’m not a big fan.
All in all I think fans of the series will enjoy it and I think it can be read as a stand-alone, but it wasn’t my favorite in the series.
Very enjoyable addition to the shifter chronicles. It takes place in the 1970s and sets the stage for the current issues the Agency is facing. I loved that we get such an unusual shifter here, who is absolutely not cuddly. The great white shark is a perfect match for warrior Digger. Both are predatory men, surprised by love.
A further step in the journey of learning about the weapon that Arcas is trying to wield in the present story. We return back to the shipwreck from Hunted Guardian where the scrolls are now guarded by shark shifters.
I found that the sharks were another fascinating type of shifter. Much like in the Serpent and the Angel, we find that sharks have a different type of relationship with their human half than other shifters. The change is harder on them, from water to land, and the type of creature distances them more from humanity. As predators, sharks tend to just see humans as prey and their actions are rather foreign to them. Reef, a shark shifter assigned to the protection, has never much enjoyed being human as compared to being a shark. He is shocked when Digger invades his territory but doesn't back down from a shark. Reef finds himself drawn to this intriguing human, but also needs to fulfill his duty and keep safe the scrolls.
Digger is a man outcast from society for his life choices. He voluntarily signed up for the Vietnam War but to return and find out that no one appreciated his service. The war was lost, friends had died, and society looked down on him. He chose to strike out and make his own place in the world on the sea as a captain. He is shocked when a job leads him to Reef, a captivating young man who shows interest in him. He knows there is something more to his past but finds himself wanting to pursue Reef anyway. When things go awry he has to decide if he can trust this new person in his life.
I found the descriptions of predators very intriguing in this book. It made Reef and Digger a wonderful match, but it was the first book in a while to not make it easy for the two because of lack of knowledge. Digger has no idea about shifters, while the past 7 books have all had people in the know. Learning about that world is quite the shock and I found this was the first book to really test the characters about embracing a new world. I enjoyed how it was worked through and hope that we can get a little update on the two in a later book!
Digger Sullivan prefers the peaceful life, exploring the sea, rather than dealing with a scornful society on land. Shark shifter Reef is craving a break from his guard duties. Reef’s boredom quickly ends when Digger finds one of the scrolls Reef and his shark shifter clan are protecting.
Predator and Prey is the ninth book in The Shifters series. This series is written in two parts. The first part features shifters finding their mates while the second part features the guardians of the magical scrolls. The second part of the series starts with Hunted Guardian, book seven, which gives a little history of the scrolls. However, The Serpent and the Angel provides a little more insight into the shifter’s enemy, as well as why the scrolls are so important to him.
Four dark magic scrolls joined together in a unique ritual could obliterate shifters across the world. It must be noted that there are master shifters who are immortal, as well as protectors of the shifters. The question is, if the enemy has all four scrolls, will he succeed in destroying the immortal master shifters along with the mortals or will good finally achieve victory over evil?
M.D. Grimm has created another remarkable addition to this enjoyable series. I am looking forward to reading the eventful closing stages this series is heading towards.
There are 5 parts to the overall story and only 2 ( The Beginning and Scrolls) are out so far, which include 12 books - about 20 books will be in the total (see author's website for complete listing).
I have read them 2x now as more books have come out. Each book has it's own story but there is a back story that threads throughout them - I will wait until all the parts come out now to be able to complete the overall story before reading again.
Also, the next time I read the series, I will read it in chronological order of the stories, not in the order they were written. You can do either, but the books from earlier times tell the deeper underlining story of the scrolls, which is what keeps the series going since each book has it's own HEA.
I jumped into this series with book. This short story packed a lot in. There was action, suspense, sexy times, thoughtful conversations, story building and character development.
Digger and Reef actually are quite perfect for each other. They understand each other in ways that mean the most for relationships. Once Digger got over the shock of Reef being a shark, he knew he loved him. It goes to show love always wins.
The back story intrigues me and now that the action of saving the scrolls has begun, I am more intrigued. I am now going to go back to the beginning and start the whole series and continue with the series when each book continues to be published.
*I received this book to read for Inked Rainbow Reads in exchange for an honest review.*
