Emerging from a cardboard coffin with no memory of her past, Sky knew only three things:
One. Someone had buried her alive.
Two. She saw things nobody else could see.
Three. To find out how she ended up there, she’ll need to remember.
But taken in by the three men that run the cemetery she found herself in, she wasn’t sure anymore if she wanted any of her old life back.
That was, until her visions turned bloody.
Now she must unearth her past to figure out if she is going insane or if something more is happening. Because she may have cheated death once, but she might not be so lucky the next time.
P. Stormcrow grew up with a love for love and somehow that turned into authoring contemporary and paranormal BDSM romances. Fierce women and sensitive men fill her stories while she examines social norms and challenges conventional tropes of the genre through her craft. She is the recipient of the 2021 inaugural Good Sex Awards in the category of Erotic Touch. Born in Hong Kong and raised in Canada, she enjoys writing about both cultures.
In addition to being an author, she is also a techie, a graphic designer, a mother, a lover, a fighter and a little bit of everything else in between. When she's not typing away madly on her phone and running into poles, she enjoys copious amounts of tea, way too many sugary treats and as many sci-fi / fantasy / paranormal TV shows as she can sneak in time to watch.
I can't get over this book! Once I started I couldn't stop, the horror elements are terrifying and gripping, and the characters are all so interesting they just swirled me up in their web. Stormcrow has once again captured the perfect blend of plot and steam with a compelling story and characters. I can't recommend this novella enough!
Sky digs her way out of a shallow grave and not only can't remember who put her there, but she can't even recall her own name. Yet someone had to have put her there. She's lucky enough to have the help of the men who work at the funeral home beside the cemetery, but is their good will true or an illusion? What's more, are the dead who are haunting her just harmless ghosts or something much more sinister?
This was a short horror tale, but it was not lacking in the chills and suspense. We're thrust right into the story with Sky waking in a cardboard coffin. She doesn't know how she got there or why someone put her there. And it makes you wonder if it's something you want her to recall! The tension is thick and doesn't let up. Many times I was wondering if Sky is being honest or being tricked or, even more horrifying, if it's all real. The helpfulness of the three kind men in the funeral home made me wonder too. Who to trust? What was most captivating was the nightmare images created by the author. The terrifying dreams, the ghosts, sinister little sounds, the queasy feeling that something just isn't right. It spectacularly unravels to reveal the truth, and it kept me guessing right to the end. It was marvelously written.
I had been hoping for a "proper horror" from P. Stormcrow since The Fae Effect showed us she had the potential to pull it off. I love a good spooky story, but I can be a little picky. Horror is not always gore (that's kind of boring these days actually), although The Tenth does have that. It's not always death (although - spoiler free, there's some of that too). For me, horror shines a spotlight on my own fears, and asks me how I would cope. Then it makes me wonder what else is in the darkness, just outside the spotlight. Now, for a novella, The Tenth achieves that amazingly well. It's straight into the action, into a sequence that holds a particular terror for me and I imagine, most people. The pace is kept up very well and never feels rushed or forced. The characters and their relationships manage to happen organically, and I felt like I had time to get a good handle on their very different personalities. I developed a particular fondness for one of them!
Stormcrow writes relationships very well. She understands that good relationships need communication, support and trust to work. Respect is always present and so much love. She may write steamy scenes, but they're wholesome steamy scenes!
TRIGGER WARNINGS PRESENT. I don't take much notice of trigger warnings. I skimmed over these ones at the front with a bit of a nod and carried on. DO NOT DO THIS. The warnings are there for a reason. Don't read this then complain. You got what you came here for.
All in all really enjoyable! Freaky, sexy, not too long. I hope we get more!
Okay, I confess that horror is a genre I hightail from whether it be books or movies because who wants to dream about ghosts and zombies but it's Pixie right? Or so I thought. But I completely forgot about the author's impeccable storytelling along with her amazing talent where the description is concerned and half the time as I read I secretly kept telling myself it's just a story, it's only words!
The slight gore, suspense, and chills are the perfect ingredients for a good scare. At times I wondered if Sky was being honest, punked, or was it all a nightmare clashing with reality. Throw in the likes of three handsome brothers and you start questioning your sanity much like Sky and I'm amazed Pixie could pinch in a little steamy session throughout the chaos and it once again points out how trust and communication skills are healthy factors in any relationship.
The title made sense at the end and though I had a few assumptions, I wasn't ready for what happened and that's a twist I'm sure horror fans will certainly enjoy.
Overall, The Tenth sent shivers across my body and scared my imagination half to death (especially since I was reading at night lol) but I enjoyed it regardless. Job well done Pixie, I salute your versatility.
I don't read well really any horror but this story is so much more then that. With amazing characters to the incredible detail used to explain the things that go bump in the night, or day, or whenever. There are a few twists and turns you definitely won't see coming. The story at times is intense but there are also moments of kindness and caring. Don't let them fool you, things can change in the blink of an eye or the turn of a page. So be wary or you might just wake up in box! 😉
Admittedly, I am not a great lover of horror, but after seeing the blurb, I knew I had to read this book. It was different for me, but what a great story! P.Stormcrow shows that she is able to turn her hand to any genre. This story has believable characters and relationships, and will have you gripped from the very first page. I highly recommend this as a must read.
It’s been a long time since I’ve read a horror story. Pixie did not disappoint. This was phenomenal. I couldn’t stop turning the pages. This author is so talented with her different genres she writes. Sky’s story starts with a bang. She has to dig her way out of a grave. She doesn’t know why or who she is. Her story kept me captivated from the very start to the end.
