Beacon Grove #1

Calling Quarters

Rate this book
I was raised to believe that towns full of witches were only in movies, and those spell books my aunt studied were just a silly pastime. I had no idea of the important role I play in a coven with zero knowledge of my existence, or the sacrifice my parents made by leaving behind everything they knew to protect me.

In the wake of my aunt's mysterious death, I have no other choice but to return to my birthplace for answers. But Beacon Grove is a twisted place where distrust spreads like cancer, lies fester, and the truth is nearly impossible to find.

One thing I’m sure of is the danger that Remy Winters and our inexplicable connection pose to me as one of the Quarters of the Watchtower coven. Through painstaking research and placing my trust in this man who has been trained since birth to hunt me, I learn that my family is far more intertwined with the tight-knit town than I originally thought.

I could be exactly what they need to save their beloved Quarters, but admitting what I am to those who have been brainwashed into fearing me could put my life at risk.

Calling Quarters is a twisted tale of corruption, lies, and a love story written in the stars.

I really enjoyed this story. I loved the mystery behind her past and how she started learning about it. I can’t wait to read book two.

Overall I enjoyed this book.
I did however feel that there was some disconnection between characters.

I loved the mystery and how the author went about the main character finding the answers and their place in her world.

I can’t wait to read the next one.

“ This was too much. The chanting, the spells, the magic. None of this seemed real. The witchcraft Aunt Asher practiced was always just a silly hobby I thought she'd wasted her time on. I never believed it to be real. But it was. It was too real. This was what she was trying to prepare me for, and I was too dense to listen. ”

Calling Quarters is the first book in the Beacon Grove series by Jen Stevens. I had never read any of Jen Stevens work before, but the blurb won me over- so I took a chance and jumped right in. I am so happy that I took that chance, because I never expected when I stumbled across this book that it would turn out to be one of my favourite reads of the year. MS. Stevens has earned herself a place on my must-read authors list and I look forward to stalking, ummmm I mean following, yes following and enjoying her work through the many years to come.
This is a fantastic paranormal romance, with witches, their coven, magic, prophecy, fate, danger, self-discovery, mystery, suspense, agendas, plots, power, politics, secrets, lies, corruption, murder, duty, responsibility, emotion, enemies to lover, finding love unexpectedly, and finding where you belong.
When Stories aunt dies unexpectedly, she returns to her family’s hometown hoping to discover more about her parents, aunt, and their family history. But what she discovers turns her world upside down….. and comes with a rather large dose of danger. A coven of witches with some powerful magic at play. Then secret agendas that come to light. All the while chemistry bubbles and sparks fly. Who to trust, that is the question. Now let the adventure begin.
I loved everything about this book- completely absorb by the story the whole way through. I got to the end and didn’t want to leave. Thankfully the next book is already available- Counting Quarters (Book #2) which is my next port of call.
Highly Recommended.
Happy Reading…

Thank you, Jen Stevens!

3.5 ⭐ maybe 4? I'm on the fence with this one. The story is uniquely told of a witch who doesn't know she's a witch because her family has lied and died to keep her safe. Any training she might have received from an Aunt she refused as a petulant teenager. She's now graduated college and is in search of answers in her family's hometown.

I found it hard to get into this book as I found it slow to get to the point of the story. There was some minor world-building in regards to her hometown. There were a few contradictions throughout the book but not so bad to be confusing. Unfortunately the character development just wasn't there. The story picked up about halfway through and drew me in more, but the ending was very rushed. This huge reveal happened, some tense moments and the main characters are near-death. In one single "epilogue" chapter, a week goes by and wrongs are righted and the book ends. There is a cliffhanger at the end, well it's more of a curb than a cliff. I am curious how the story continues, and I liked this book well enough that I would read the next book.

I felt like the story was written for younger readers, even though there is some spice.🌶️🌶️ It made for a good lazy Sunday quick read with no real emotional ties formed to the characters.

BOOK REVIEW 📣
⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ 3.5/5
Let me start with this- I loved the middle and ending of this story, but not so much the beginning. Let me tell you why.
Starting off this new story about witches and a family secret, I really felt as if I was dropped into the middle of a story. There was no introduction to any of the characters, and it feels as if we were somehow supposed to know them already. Before the first chapter, the author lists all of the characters and the family they belong to, which is great to go back to for reference. But I would’ve liked having the characters introduced in the writing, rather than flipping back and forth between the character list and the story.
One such “introduction” occurs within the very first chapters- our main character, Storie, meets one of the hotel staff as she checks in (this staff member becomes a key character going forward). Keep in mind, this character never introduces herself to Storie before Storie tells us “Blaire gestured for me to follow”. I had to double take- who is Blaire? That lack of introduction stuck with me for quite some time and only went away as I neared the end of the story.
That said, I love the development of the characters, their relationships, and the overall story arc.
It leaves you on a cliff hanger- and I’m quite ready for more! Thank goodness the sequel comes out soon!

This one is a fun read! You're kind of thrown into this world not fully understanding what's going on, but that's purposeful. You have to be just as confused to what's going on as Storie is to truly get the full effect of this story. It's a wild ride and certainly worth reading!

The characters are well done, and I hope we get even more from each one in the next book. They all have me curious and wanting to know more, so I hope that they're delved into more.

We're left with a mystery at the end of this book which keeps you on your toes and wanting to read the next book as soon as possible. I'm glad it ended where it did and not a little bit before. I was honestly counting how many pages were left as I got to the end because I was worried it was going to leave us hanging in a very pivotal moment, but thankfully it didn't do that.

I look forward to the second book and can't wait to read it!

I have no idea how I received his book but it is free on kindle unlimited and I found it on my netgalley.com review list as well as sharing it as a book blitz by xpresso tours - however I received it thank you!

This was a great read, although I missed much of October due to a family tragedy this book helped get me back into the swing of reading again. Well plotted with great characters. This is a mystery, a romance, and a tale of power. Not just magical power but political power. The Quarters of Beacon Grove are meant to protect the town as they perform magic. They basically hold the circle to prevent bad stuff from happening. However since before the current Quarters took over their powers have been waning. Rumor has it that every Quarter has a mirror and that the mirrors are draining the power from the Quarters so in order to stop this Mirrors must be found and killed. However no one wants their children killed so those who believe they gave birth to mirrors fled Beacon Hill.

Now a Mirror has returned to Beacon Hill and when she meets her Quarter more than sparks fly. Torn between his duty to destroy his mirror and the pull he feels toward her Remy Winters keeps her secret and begins to think the whole town may have been deceived, but who is pulling the strings?

Good plotting, interesting characters and good story line. I think this may be marketed as an adult or "new adult" (whatever that is) book but I put it firmly in the YA category.

🌶🌶🌶🌶Spice Level 4!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Storyline. We begin the Calling Quarters journey following Storie on a road of discovery, secrets, magic, romance and spice, we follow Remy down a journey of deceit, betrayal, magic, romance and ruin. This book took me out of the real world, I was enveloped into the gothic magical realm that is Beacon Grove and I want to stay there. There were a few editing mistakes in some chapters but it didn’t take away from the experience for me, the story kept me locked in and hungry for more. I’m desperate for book 2 and I cannot wait until I can reenter the world that is Beacon Grove. This book is 😘 freaking chef’s kiss. I recommend this book to lovers of fantasy romance with spicy moments and lovers of witches and magic! I really loved this book and would read this over and over again. You can find me clinging to my phone and wallet as I wait for book 2 thanks!👋🏽

So good!

I read this book because the author was looking for reviews. All i can say is that I am glad that I stumbled upon her post! I loved it!

The characters were easy to get to know, the writing was excellent, and I could easily envision the scenes as they unfolded. I’m a little mad Storie didn’t go back to visit her grandmother, I really wanted to know what she was going to reveal to her. It didn’t take away from the book, but I kept thinking about it as more and more questions piled up throughout the story.

Then ending was a perfect build up to Book 2, and I think I know who it is too! Definitely looking forward to the second book.

I really enjoyed this book. It is a nice, quick read and I finished it in 2 days. I will definitely come back for book 2 to see what happens. The cover is beautiful, and I loved the black pages. My big complaint is with the printing. There were a ton of spots that had extra spaces between words, and the last line on many of the black pages was in black ink. I would've overlooked it if it was just once or twice, but this was constant throughout the book. Hopefully, book 2 will be printed better so I can come back and figure out if Blair is the 5th Quarter and if they find the other counters.

This was an enjoyable book. I liked all the magic in it and learning about witches.

Story and Remy finding each other and her being his counters and the bond they felt towards each other was really nice to read about. I loved learning about the four different covens and how they had to protect others. I didn't like people like the movement trying to kill others to gain control.

I received this book for free from the author for an honest review.

Fun

This was definitely a fun read and the cliffhanger makes me want to read book 2 now. The story is very good an unique, but I felt like it was slow paced. Some things were explained in too much detail, whereas other things weren’t explained at all and it did get confusing. However, overall it was a really fun read and I’m interested in reading the next book when it comes out.

This book is so good! It started out a little slow in the beginning but I was quickly sucked in! Storie and Remy's relationship definitely got spicy at the end. I figured there would be a twist in the story but I was not prepared for the twist that came! I'm still trying to scratch my head to figure out what is coming next in the Beacon Grove world but I CANNOT wait! I would love to see more back story on Storie's family and the town but I'm super excited to see where the next book takes us!

The plot was mysterious and kept me guessing on what's about to happen next! I love how the ending sets you up for book 2, Counting Quarters. I already have several theories!

I love this story. And the writing was so well done, I was drawn in instantly. Set in a small town, Storie and Remy find their roles to each other, along with their connection, and work to save their coven together. This story had quite a few twists and turns that kept me guessing, as well as a slow burn with some steamy bits. Dual POV, and HEA, but a bit of a cliffhanger ending. Cannot wait to read the next one!

This book was an absolutely gem! It centers around a town that is full of secrets and deception. Storie comes here to find out her family’s history and what’s hidden behind all the mysteries of her life. The love story that unfolds during the story is amazing and I absolutely loved the MC’s together. I can’t wait for more!

DNF, although I forced myself to read to the 60% mark. The characters were shallow and underdeveloped and read like teenagers instead of the mid-20’s they apparently were. The story tried to be cryptic and just came off as disjointed and confusing. The love scenes were just plain bad.

I really loved this story. Being a girl from the PNW myself, I was able to picture a lot of the landscape and let the story paint a picture for me. I enjoyed the supernatural aspect of this and also the mystery while Storie tries to discover who she is and unravel her past.
