🐾 Ten purrfectly hilarious mysteries in one big box set! 🐾
In the charming town of Hampton Cove, crime never sleeps—but luckily, neither do its feline detectives! Max and his trusty sidekick Dooley have a secret talent: they can talk to their human, Odelia Poole. As a crime reporter, Odelia is always chasing the next big scoop… but with a little help from her clever cats, she might just solve the case before the police do.
Of course, Detective Chase Kingsley and his grumpy cat Brutus aren’t too thrilled about that. And when murder strikes, the claws come out as both teams race to uncover the truth.
Packed with laugh-out-loud humor, lovable characters, and plenty of twists and turns, this bestselling series has sold over a million copies!
📚 This box set includes books 1-10 in the popular cozy mystery series at a huge discount!
Nic has a background in political science and before being struck by the writing bug worked odd jobs around the world (including but not limited to massage therapist in Mexico, gardener in Italy, restaurant manager in India, and Berlitz teacher in Belgium).
When he’s not writing he enjoys curling up with a good (comic) book, watching British crime dramas, French comedies or Nancy Meyers movies, sampling pastry (apple cake!), pasta and chocolate (preferably the dark variety), twisting himself into a pretzel doing morning yoga, going for a run, and spoiling his big red tomcat Tommy.
He lives with his wife (and aforementioned cat) in a small village smack dab in the middle of absolutely nowhere and is probably writing his next ‘Mysteries of Max’ book right now.
The characters are very engaging, and the feline personalities are better defined than many humans are in other books. There are many comedic moments, and many touching ( but not saccharine) moments. My only criticism is that around the middle of the series, a cliche common to mysteries pops up - the eccentric verging on obnoxious elderly relative. I cannot imagine having to live on the same street with this character.
Each of these little mysteries are around 200 pages long and I found them quite enjoyable. There are some nice bits of humor and similar to the Donna Andrews cozies a wacky family. The lead human character is Odelia Poole who, along with her mother and grandmother are all able to converse with cats. Max describes himself as "blorange" (blonde/orange) and "big boned" (aka fat). I will likely read the whole next set of 10 cozies.
I made it through 6 of the ten. The writing was stiff, but the author got a little better as I progressed. But the plots were predictable, the characters were not compelling and the slo-mo romance was just not fun.
When I started the first one I wasn’t so sure I would like them. But the further I read the more intrigued I became. What a fun group of cats and humans. I’m not crazy about Granny though. She is a bit manic depressive.
If you've been thinking about sampling The Mysteries of Max, this box set has the first ten stories in the series.
Let's meet the main characters. First, there's Odelia Poole, nosy reporter for the Hampton Cove Gazette and Max's human. Her parents are Marge and Ted Poole, and her uncle Alex is chief of police. Chase Kinsley is the new cop in town. The cat sleuths are Max, a hefty blorange cat (I'm not fat. I'm big-boned. Runs in the family) (Odelia), Harriet, a white Persian with the morals of an alley cat (Marge), Brutus, a buff black cat (Chase), and Dooley, a simple gray cat (Gran).
Now for Gran. I despise Gran. She's a disrespectful, inconsiderate, lying, cheating, remorseless old woman with the morals of an alley cat.
If you like mysteries and cats, you're sure to like cats who solve mysteries. Oh, did I mention that Odelia, Marge, and Gran can converse with the cats?
Love cats communicating with humans and solving mysteries
The author caught my interest in how the cats were portrayed and how they could communicate with the women of the Poole family. The books were good cozy reads. Nothing heavy duty but they had me laughing, the mysteries were clean and interesting. In full disclosure Dooley could have been a little smarter and not as naive; Harriet could not have been the cat version of such "a dumb blonde"; and Vesta, the human grandmother, could have been shown with a little more common sense. Sometimes the stereotypes in the books bugged me but the fun, laughter, and interesting mysteries kept me listening to the first10 books. Just downloaded the next 10 books in this series. That says a lot right there because if I didn't like this series I wouldn't keep listening. I do love Max, the loveable " big-boned" feline detective of the series.
The mystery, mayhem, murder most foul... The kitty treats, cat choir, and the human women who can talk to their cats, (and understand them); add a little romance, close family ties, and what do you have? For one thing, an often hilarious insight to the minds of cats and their relationships to each other and to their humans. These books are fun, entertaining, and, except for the murders, pretty lighthearted. If you enjoy a little romance with your mysteries, and are a cat lover, you will enjoy these stories. If you aren't a cat lover, be warned. You may find yourself at the animal shelter picking out a furball of your own; or two, or three...
I had read a couple of Max books out of sequence before, so when I got to read the collection of the 1st ten (there's over 40!), I jumped right in! Any of the Nic Saint books about the lovable cat Max and his cat posie and wacky human family who can speak/understand "cat" to solve crimes can be read in any order. But I now have a better understanding after reading the earlier ones in order. Great fun, binge reading! Get on board with Max and Odelia (his human) and a whole host of unique characters!
Cute, if trope-laden, cat/human detectives - with drama
Ten who-dun-its poking fun at current pop culture with a cast of characters, human, feline, canine, avian, porcine - and species non-specific romantic melodramas galore.
The chick-lit tropes are here: Intrepid heroine; stalwart swain; eccentric and scandalous widowed grandmother; long-suffering parents and a Chief of Police uncle, all adding to the atmosphere .
All 10 books were excellent mystery stories. I enjoyed the way the cat Max was telling the stories and the way they found out the killers. Then adding in their lives with their humans lives was good. Very comical at times with some romance and intrigue. However I didn’t like the cursing added in. That was totally unnecessary. The stories would have been great without that!
Horrible. I have only done this one other time. I read 3 of the books and then just deleted all of them and wasted my money. If you want to read about cats having sex and making out, this is the book for you. These books made me feel disgusted. I also did not like reading about senior humans having sex, well, everywhere. I read these short mysteries because they are usually entertaing and a good semi-clean read. I wish books were rated like movies.... Tired of wasted money.
I love reading these cozy mysteries. Especially where cats can talk and help solve these mysteries. However, when books are written in both first person and third person it can get confusing at times. I also don't particularly care for the use of obscure words being used to make the stories sound more educated. All in all though I totally enjoyed this first compilation of stories. Keep up the good work, Nic Saint.
I only got to 2% in the first chapter of the first book before I backed out of the series. Unlike the other cat series I am reading, I didn’t find that 2% in the least bit entertaining. And some of the stuff that was written, I found utterly disgusting. Of course, if you enjoy a-story about human waste and what disgusting people are rumored to do with it, then by all means…read away. Otherwise, STAY away.
This series is a fun set of quick, interesting mysteries. Our main characters start out as A reporter and the 3 family cats. As things progress we meet her family and learn the woman's secret abilities. As we are led through a series of murders set in the Hamptons we see family changes and life in this small escape from the city.
If you're a fan of Joel Grey mysteries you will enjoy this series. Odelia and the females of her family can talk to their cats. She is a reporter and often gets scoops from her cats and they often find clues in the oddest places which she shares with her uncle the Chief of Police.
I love these books, although, I’m a grandmother, and I hope somebody would tell me to “Shut the hell up!!” if I were like Vesta. She wears thin after one book. . . . But the cats, all of them, are wonderful, as is Odelia and all her remaining family and the other characters. I also love the allusions to current characters on the world stage!
This was a fun series to read. You can finish a book In an evening. The authors style of cats communication and their trials and tribulations are hilarious. That the cat ladies can communicate with them and they can solve mysteries for the police makes for some interesting reading.
The mysteries were great!! It was all fun. I did get vey tired of all the sexual innuendos. It really distracted from the story line. It didn’t add anything of value. Just keep to the mysteries and leave the other stuff out. It will be a much better read
I enjoyed reading this series. The characters are believable and quirky. I found myself laughing often over their exploits. I would recommend this series if you like to laugh over a good cat detective story. My husband bought this for me as a surprise present. Money well spent.
I’m in love with this series. If you love cars, it will be twice as nice! The mysteries are a lot of fun and the family antics are hilarious. The characters are just regular people who have some unique personalities and one decidedly unique gift. Keeping their secret safe is just part of the fun.
I picked this book to read because it was light and humorous reading (not like what I normally read) because I had just lost my husband and it was the best decision I made. I laughed so much and shared the story with my cat and deceased husband. Yes I still talk to both of them. Thank you for easing my pain. Keep writing.
I enjoyed reading all these stories. They were a gentle combination of human and animals and cozy mysteries. The cats are sweet and sometimes quite funny. Sometimes I had to laugh at some of their antics, Although there were ten stories in this bundle, they all had different scenarios. I think I will continue with the next bundle.
Ok reads, some quite cute but others not anything to recommend. Hundreds of references to contemporary tv series and movies were already becoming obscure and many will be meaningless very soon. Many inconsistencies also, like starting out in a truck but arriving in a car, etc. Just seems to be churning out cute, some slightly raunchy stories to pay the rent?
I've read all 10 of these. I have laughed so hard at times that brought tears to my eyes. I loved every novelet and hated when it was over, but couldn't wait to start the next one. Usually when I finish a series, I will read something different, but I can't stop reading these. I'm looking forward to starting book #11. God bless you. J
Good characters and storyline, but also a few inconsistencies from book to book that were both irritating and confusing. In one of the first books, Chase calls Odelia's mum Marge when he at theirs for dinner. In a later book, he calls her Mrs Poole, and she tells him it is about time he called her Marge!
What a great read wonderful characters and I loved reading the stories from the cats perspective and human's. When I started to get to the end of book 8 I was dreading coming to the end of the series but it would appear that there's more books out there
Stories are hilarious. Loveable cats and human characters. Lighthearted reading even though murder is involved. I cannot think of five more words to complete this review
This series is so much fun to read! The plots are so interesting and hearing it all in the voice of one of the cats is a good addition. They're funny and sad, knowledgeable and patient, all the things we are. I love these characters. Now on to the second box set.
A murder leads the police to arrest Wolf, but he is innocent. The cats and Gran try to convince the police that Wolf is innocent. I loved how Chase begins to believe that the cats are talking to him.
