What can I really say, I’m a boy dad and I’m lucky to be one. Funny enough my wife picked this out during our last library visit but now I’m completely sure it was because she wanted to see me in a proverbial mess. Not everything strikes completely home with it being primarily focused on black culture and the relating fatherhood, but I think for the most part everything crosses over and the feeling and sentiment are both still there. Bonus emotional points for getting to cuddle up to my little man while I read this to him and imagining all the things we still have and get to experience together to come. 3.75/5
3.8 - The type of picture book that folk buy for friends who've recently had a male child. Very Black in references, activities, and language --and ain't nothing wrong with that. Glad to see a book like this published by a Big Five company. Rhyme is ok, illustrations are charming, especially the cover.
I think boy dads and some boys will like this but hopefully it doesn't put too much expectation on other boys to be so stereotypically boy-ish. I wouldn't read this in story time but more so to your own specific child.
