The author makes us realize that knowing ourselves by being more introspective will help answer any questions thrown our way. This book is more than just verbal communication; it's about our actions and how we brand and present ourselves in public and online. Something that resonated is that "your profile on social media and has your identity attached to it." Overall, this read is worth it.
One major take away from this fantastic book about communication and its various forms is about being an advocate for those who can't communicate properly. As an instructional leader, the biggest struggle our youth experiences is how to get peers and family to understand them. This book demonstrates the importance of being the beacon for them. Very resourceful book.
In this time when too often we are cut off from interpersonal relationships, being distanced by Zoom and Facetime interaction due to the restrictions of preserving safety in the pandemic world, Discover Press is offering some fine ‘reminders’ or instruction on person to person and person to group interaction. First with READ PEOPLE LKE A BOOK and now with INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION – this book is an exceptionally useful manual for reviving one on one as well as relating to groups techniques.
As the authors explain, ‘For the sake of this book, the term ‘”communication” will be operationally defined as the transference of information from one entity to another…the key to proper communication is context. “Communication” is a term that is often used generically – which is ironic because it is extremely powerful – not caring whether or not someone is willing to take advantage of it…practice self-awareness and empathy (putting yourself in the metaphoric shoes of another and understanding what they are going through) as you consider the roles that you play in the lives of those around you.’ And with degree of candor this guide polishes our techniques of communication,
The book is addresses (and instructs) in two categories People – family, friends/acquaintances, dating/relationships, co-workers/superiors – and Environmental Communication - home life, work and home environment, public speaking, and social gatherings. Each situation is very well described with the positives and negatives to consider and how to communicate effectively. The closing comment summarizes the intent of the book: ‘The voice that each of us has been given differs from anyone that exists now, in the past, or in the future. Use that voice to communicate to the world around you that you are making the most of it.’
Straightforward and conversationally related, this is a user-friendly book, one that the reader can easily access and incorporate into thinking – and adopting! Very highly recommended.
The issue of communication is a sore point for me. Directly or indirectly, when having to engage people whether at work, school, community, social gatherings, church, etc, it is obvious that communication is a struggle for us. I found this book quite enlightening on the subject matter and easy to read as a comedic approach is embedded in the content. Very needed and highly appreciated.
In a world where we communicate so much through digital means, this book is very important. It was a great refresher on the skills we all need to communicate well!
