William, Meredith, Jake, Henry and Josie are runaway foster kids who live in an abandoned apartment in Asheville. They steal what they need to survive, but, one night a strange girl named Katherine helps them. She convinces the children to let her stay the night with them and before they know it they are being whisked away into her world, a land called Mirra. A place where the sky is a rainbow, mushrooms taste like bananas and giant serpents burst out of the ground to devour them. As soon as they get there, their lives are in danger and she tells them they must get to the Blue Palace as quickly as possible. With no better alternatives they follow the Katherine, but even she isn’t sure if they will make it there in one piece.
I was hooked from the first chapter! Exciting read and you never know what will happen next. The characters are great and a few remind me of my own kids (I won't say which ones in case they read this). I would recommend for any age. Can't wait for the sequel!
Intriguing, on the whole. I’m not head over heels regarding the book but then I don’t think I’m in the target audience. For young adults, it’s a rousing adventure. The plot and descriptions show a lot of imagination, The characters are interesting and differentiated, and there are some surprising turns of fortune. I am intrigued enough that I might read the rest of the series.
