This is a well done guide to drawing male and female nudes. Best for intermediate artists. Lots of examples and information about all different aspects.

I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for the purpose of review.

4 Stars! Well, I tried. Some people are meant to be artists and others, like myself, no matter how hard we try, sadly, are not.
However, if you’re a beginner in drawing nudes, this book is a great place to start! Learn in chapter 1 - proportions and anatomy, chapter 2 - drawing the whole figure, chapter 3 - developing form and movement and chapter 4 - technique and composition. I learned a lot about the human skeleton and musculature. I never really put so much thought into what I needed to look for when drawing the human body. Who knew!?
This book took me from start to finish, all the way to framing the picture! This book covers all the basics and then some. May be too basic for advanced artists.

This was a very good introduction or in my case refresher on life drawing. There's very detailed instruction on both bone and musculature anatomy plus more advanced lessons like movement. Though the mediums suggested are more traditional I'm hoping to use these exercises to try my hand at more digital work so I expect there is versatility here for whatever type of art you prefer.

This book is a very short guide to the fundamentals of drawing nudes. I honestly might have read way too many art books to appreciate this, I don't think it was bad and it has technically some good advice, maybe falls a bit short on content but if you know absolutely nothing about drawing the human figure what you get here is a good start. I still think you might get better off with some other fundamentals book that has more content but if you don't wanna get overwhelmed and are just looking to get some first advice on your life drawing figures you can find that in here.

The Fundamentals of Drawing Nudes is a tutorial guide for life drawing by Barrington Barber. Due out in late 2021 from Arcturus Publishing, it's 96 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately; it makes it so easy to find information with the search function.

This is a very well written and information dense manual aimed at advanced beginners to intermediate drawing students as well as a refresher course for more advanced students. The first section of the book briefly covers recommended drawing tools and supplies. The author doesn't give specific brand recommendations (and I respect that he says experimentation is key, find what works and when inspiration strikes, branch out and try other tools).

The next chapters are arranged in multiple lessons thematically: proportion and anatomy, drawing the whole figure, developing form and movement, and technique and composition. Each lesson contains background theory and practice, alternatives to main points, and salient techniques as well as illustrative sketches. The author ties the theory to studies and sketches by famous artists showing how they approached similar poses and solved problems of ratio and perspective in their own work.

This book is a little above my current level of expertise, but there were a lot of valuable takeaways for me and I can see how consistent application of the exercises here will produce results (even for me, a beginner).

This would be a good choice for library acquisition and for artists, students, and hobbyists.

Four stars.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

True to its title, "The Fundamentals of Drawing Nudes" gives artists a solid starting point for how to draw the human figure with a good base.

As many artists know, it's hard to kick old habits, especially habits we've kept for years. A very common habit is drawing humans with clothes all the time, which isn't bad but doesn't take the underlying anatomy into consideration. Amateur and newbie artists like myself stylize people before we understand the fundamentals, and when we try to learn about the basic human figure, we don't know where to start. Do we just dive in? Go by our eye?

But this book is a good place to start. It's not so much a step-by-step guide but more of a practical tool to read before, during, and after figure drawing exercises. It explains bone structure, musculature, composition, shapes, proportions, different lines' effect on the pose, and so on. It's an excellent guide to anyone who wants to improve their figure drawing skills but needs a little structure in their approach.

Recommended whether you are completely new to figure drawing or have tried your hand at it a few times.

Thank you to Barrington Barber, Arcturus Publishing, and NetGalley for giving me a free eARC copy in exchange for my honest review.

I am relatively new to figure drawing. After taking a figure drawing class, I was excited to read this book and hopefully cement or expound upon the techniques that I have been learning. Overall, this is a good overview to the art of capturing the human body. I found the chapter that covered anatomy and proportions to be the most helpful. I also found some of the approaches to blocking out shapes to be a little different than other approaches I’ve learned so far, so it was helpful to learn a different way to do things.

Overall, this is a good resource, but it might be good to note that this book lives up to its name—it mostly covers the fundamentals and doesn’t offer a deep dive into any of the topics. This would be a great reference book to have on hand (especially for the skeleton and muscle photos) for anyone who has a little figure drawing experience, but this wouldn’t be my first recommendation for someone who is brand new to this type of art.

Thank you to Barrington Barber, Arcturus Publishing, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book!

The problem with the book is not much the content, but what is actually missing. There is a huge part to tell about drawing the various parts of the human body, but there are only some insignificant sentences of no practical use. The same for the various techniques.
As an experienced painter and reader of hundred of educational art books, I can tell you for sure that nobody will learn to draw from this book, there are much more useful ones written on this theme..

I liked this book but I feel like it could have had a little bit more, especially for people who are new to drawing nudes.
