Tempting Monsters #2

The Company of Fiends

Rate this book
After eight years on the stage with The Company of Fiends, the glow of the spotlight is starting to wear thin for Hazel Nix. The theater is perfect for a girl like her—one with a secret she keeps even from her more monstrous peers—but playing pretend is only exciting for so long. After so many lovers, on stage and otherwise, Hazel has yet to make a lasting connection with anyone and considers taking her last bow at the company.

Just as Hazel encounters a new and intriguing patron, disaster strikes the theater. Girls are going missing and suspiciously bad luck plagues the stage. Between ex-lovers, current bed partners, and new faces at the theater, Hazel’s heart is tangled more than ever and she finds it increasingly impossible to draw herself away from the life she’s known for so long.

It is time to make a choice. Start fresh before she’s drawn into the mess, or take a stand and fight for the family she’s found in the strangest of places.

if kathryn moon said jump, i'd say how high.

this monster porn is unironically one of the best books i've read this year. kathryn is such a talented writer and manages to include so many tropes and relationship pairings in these reverse harem romances (except f/f *ahhem*). ronan has a special place in heaven, i love him so much. book one was great but this one was just phenomenal, and it's rare for me to find a romance book with so much going on like this one that doesn't make me cringe. i wish this could be drawn out and we're led more into the world so that we care more about the villain and the actual plot, but i'm also perfectly happy for these to be shorter and have lots (and lots and lots) of smutty scenes throughout.

catch me starting book 3 at midnight right when it hits my kindle account.

I am so sad about this one 😭😭😭

I barely felt any chemistry between the heroine and her guys and it was soooo damnnn longggg.... even though nothing really happened? It was just a constant barrage of unsexy sex scenes. The uniqueness of the monster heroes was cool though.

*******

Oh my god yes another monster romance from Kathryn Moon!!! But 2022!!!!

Oooh I'm feeling conflicted about this one. I love Kathryn Moon and I LOVED A Lady of Rooksgrave Manor.

I've read 200+ reverse harems in the past year and a half. They're wildly entertaining and fun, but I'm noticing I'm becoming more critical of them. I don't just want steamy scenes, I want to feel their love and root for their relationship. I want their relationship dynamics to make sense, for their declarations of love to feel well earned.

There were a lot of things I liked about this book. We saw The Company of Fiends in book 1, when Esther's monsters took her there and she guest starred onstage. Now we get a behind the scenes look, as the heroine is one of the "humans" who gets regularly plowed by monsters for show. Hazel was an interesting heroine and narrator, and I love that Kathryn Moon continues to have a complex, sex worker heroine who genuinely loves sex and isn't shamed for it by any of her partners.

The men in this one were... interesting.
- Ronan, a red, flying imp with horns and a tail
- Hunter, a shy orc
- Nireas, a part-giant with three eyes and ... I think SIX arms?? He mentions having six hands...
- Jude, a mysterious detective
- Constantine, a demon also known as Gemini, who is made up of pain and pleasure and who can split into two forms: Con and Antin

In ALORM, I was quick to forgive the lack of plot because I had SUCH FUN with a heroine who is discovering a new world of monster sex work. In TCOF, I was... underwhelmed by the plot. The "big bad hero" is an obscure monster who's still undefined and kind of unknown. I felt like we were given a stand-in to pummel in the climax so the villain can continue in future books.

While I had fun while reading it, I didn't feel that Hazel was truly close to or in love with any of the men, so the choruses of "I love you" didn't have the same punch.

Still good, and a must read if you liked ALORM... just not my favorite from Kathryn Moon.

I reaaaaally hope the minotaur gets a story next, though!

Just when I thought Kathryn Moon couldn’t give us anything better than her first monster romance, she proved me wrong with this one.

I’ve been blown away. The setting, the main girl, the pick of monsters, their relationships, the mystery, the visit from previous characters… I can’t even form words right now. I loved this so much!!

I know for a fact I've written a review for this at least three times...so where is it GR? 🤨

Anyways, this was even better than the first one, which is saying something. I loved the sex worker and sex positivity in this book, especially considering it's set in a Victorian era, just filled with monsters. But I've come to expect healthy and respectful books from Kathryn Moon.

This was exceptionally steamy and lovely. The males were scrumdiliumcious. I read this almost 6 months ago and I can recall almost everything that happened and the characters names. That means it's a darn good book. Read it so we can commiserate together over the 6 month wait for book 3.

This was freaking superb. I loved the 1st book but holy shit this blows that out of the water. It's so much deeper and more substantial than book 1. The relationships are more developed. The suspense plot is pretty heart-breaking but also so intriguing. Whole book is a major win. And I LOVE THE PAIRINGS. I love how willing everyone is to share her and each other.

Kathryn Moon writes monster reverse harem like temptation was her first language. ‘The Company of Fiends’ is dark, carnal worship disguised as fantasy, and I devoured every wicked, soul-staining word.

The spice 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️…God-tier.

I was drowning in desire, smothered under a pile of claws, fangs, praise, and possessiveness. Each scene was detailed, intentional, and feral in the best way.

And plot-wise? Somehow, there is one. A good one. Even with smut in every chapter (sometimes more than once), the story still hits. The theater politics, the danger, the mystery behind the murders…it all gives the book enough backbone to hold up the filth. I was hooked, even when no one was getting railed (which, thankfully, was rare).

Hazel (our FMC) is such a good, fierce little pet. Not even a flicker of feminist rage bubbled up for me…just quiet awe and the creeping realization that I’d kneel too, under the right hand. 😭

Normally, this setup screams humiliation kink but HERE…It’s not demeaning, it’s powerful. Sensual. Intentional. Less “she’s owned,” and more “she’s commanding the room from the floor”. Being the pet isn’t the point. Being worshipped for it is

✔️ Monster Romantasy
✔️ Reverse Harem
✔️ Victorian Era backdrop
✔️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ Smutty smut
✔️ Part of a series, can be read as a standalone
✔️ Feminine, sensual, super loving FMC
✔️ Devoted, ravenous, powerful, protective MMCs

Genre: Erotica
Type: Standalone book 2 of 3 from Tempting Monsters series
POV: First Person - Female
Rating:

After eight years as an actress with The Company of Fiends, Hazel Nix grew weary of the entertainment business. Everything became more complicated when unfortunate things started happening around the theater. But leaving meant losing those she cared about and potentially herself.

While I enjoyed the overall story, this book was unnecessarily long. I didn’t like the villain storyline which didn’t go anywhere. The first half of the book was slow with minimal plot and character progression. Thankfully, the second half was much more exciting.

“The others—” I started as his mouth trailed to my jaw.
“I don’t care,” he rasped.
“—aren’t going anywhere. They’re mine.”
“I don’t care,” he repeated, pulling away, smiling, his stare bright and cheeks flushed.

I’m glad I got several things which I hoped for after finishing book 1. I loved that the monsters were more interactive with each other, and Hazel’s background made it more interesting. My favorite monster was Ronan because he had the most entertaining personality and the best connection with her.

The Company of Fiends is a story of deserving love and self-acceptance. It would appeal to readers who enjoy monster erotica in a historical setting.

Note: Technically, this book can be read as a standalone, but there is minimal ongoing background storyline for the trilogy.

Similar the the first book, this is a why choose, monster romance. Though Hazel’s job is to have sex onstage with monsters for entertainment instead of working at a manor.

The first part of this book was really good. There was a lot of character introductions, relationship building and getting an understanding of Hazel’s job. But once they settled into their relationship, not a lot happened beside a whole lot of sex. Which was really spicy and fun to read but for a 500 page book, I guess I just wanted something to happen. It was still really enjoyable and I am not one who needs a lot of plot to enjoy a book but, I would have loved it more if it was 100 paged shorter.

Just a disclaimer:
Everyone has basically at one point had sex with everyone and not just the MCs. It’s implied that both Hazel and Ronan continue to do their job with other people in the present of the book but there isn’t much detail on it. It is a different vibe to other books when there’s mention of sex with other people as it’s their job and they make it clear how they just see it as such but, I thought I should just put that out there.

Oh and I’m not sure how I feel about Constantine’s “self pleasure”…It was the first situation I’ve read like this so I’m going to need to sit on it for a bit. I really liked his character but that one scene was something.

Anyways, good book if you’re just looking for some sweet, monster smut!

CWs: sex work, sexually explicit content, parental abuse/neglect, dubcon, references to noncon, references to kidnapping & sex trafficking, racism, classism, violence, murder

tropes: monster fcking, sex club (theater), friends to lovers, bdsm, praise, daddy, sexy chasing, orgasm denial, kitchen table polyamory

TCOF hits all the hallmarks you crave when reading Kathryn’s work - laundry necessitating filth, the poetic Tetris of tender polyamory, and hard won cinnamon roll love ever afters. Though it is the 2nd full length work in the tempting monsters universe, readers should enter with the awareness that Hazel’s story is tonally much closer to Lola’s than Esther’s. We meet our heroine deep in the cloudiness of her life and career as an actress in the company of fiends, and all of the jaded coping mechanisms that come along with it. There is sunshine yet to be found at the other end of the grit, with a depth and mastery of dynamic that will make you feel every moment of angst, ecstasy, dream of far away normalcy, and - eventually - earned happiness. I dare say this is my friend’s most vine ripened work to date.

Wildly imaginative, but doesn't offer enough plot-wise to propel me forward, I really don't have any negative remark regarding what I've read of The Company of Fiends, in fact, thus far my impression is mostly positive: beautiful writing with attention to detail, and this world populated with fantastical monsters feels lived-in and tangible—which is quite an accomplishment in and of itself. Particularly impressive are the non-human sex scenes—solid originality when it comes to the 'action sequences' involving extra limbs, doppelgangers, and super-sized body parts.

It simply didn't hook me in quick enough; as much as I enjoy the world-building and atmosphere, reading almost 100 page to just get a whiff of plot feels like too much time/effort for very little reward (I'm still not convinced a well-told romance, or any genre literature, need to be over 500+ pages). So I'm putting this down not for quality reason, but I have other books on the shelf that excite me more (and get to the point faster).

This didn’t need to be THAT long.

I finished it only because I got the audiobook and because I couldn’t think of a better alternative to listen to.

It doesn’t matter what subgenre of romance I read, if the author can’t make me care about the charatcers, I can’t rate it highly.

This causes me physical pain to write, but I'm DNFing this at 42%. This didn't hit like the first book did. She spends way too much time with Hunter, whomst I hate, and I have no clue what's with the Nireas and Jude things. Not impressed. The only partners I like are Ronan and Constantine.

I'm not into the murder mystery plot line and it's going basically nowhere. The spice is good, but a lot of the scenes are glossed over with just a quick summary of what happened which is kinda like.....the entire reason I'm here lol. This book also feels like I've been reading it forever, but am somehow only on 42%. Imo, it is too long.

I truly hope that someone else enjoys this monster porn experience, but it is not for me.

I love a book filled with quality monster smut. I really enjoyed this book and the harem. The spice is heavy, plot is light, similar to the prior book.

My main complaint is there was too much Hunter. He wasn’t my fave and it took too long for her to get with the other men. I started to get bored with the content because I needed more but some of the other men made up for it by the time we got there. I mean Jude and Ronan REALLY made up the Hunter focus.

This was SO good.
The smut was fantastic, as expected.
The plot was dangerous and interesting and full of monsters, as I’d hoped.
The relationships were sweet and lovely and differed for each character.

There was some kink involved. Some power exchange and some switching and it was hot as all hell.

It was over 500 pages, which I greatly appreciated since I was never ready for it to end.

I’m just a little speechless.
I loved it and I’m not sure what else to say.
I can not wait to see what the next book has in store.

So, we have Hazel, the human who isn't human and who can basically fuck any monster, so the show director Reddy, takes advantage and puts her in the more dangerous acts, coz she doesn't mind.

We have Hunter. The dear, sweet, Dom-Daddy orc who has the money and influence and is just looking for someone to genuinely love him. Once I made the connection to who he was in book 1, his interactions with Hazel are all the more sweet. His first sex scene with Hazel when he shows his true self was hot then the subsequent pet scene.

We have Ronan. The Imp with wings and a very interesting fetish that is the lovable rascal of the bunch, Hazel's friend above anything else and they've been in "secret" love for the longest time with each other. The silks scene with Ro was hot as well as the one in his 'lair'. And his introductory scene where he called Hazel nut.

We have Nireas. The 3 eyed, 6 handed piano master whose one time, once a year stage performance with Hazel was just fire, mwaki, burning the pages. Again, also in love with Hazel and has some interesting secrets.

We have Jude. The across-the-street-their-eyes-met-and-the connection-was-formed copper. Happens to be half fae. The one Hazel could identify with and I loved the fact that they helped each other come out of their respective shells. His audience to the stage scene then subsequent mm scenes were hot.

We have Constantine. Also know as Con and Antin. Pain+Pleasure in one package. A demon under Birsha's control sent in to basically spy for Birsha, but again, he fell for Hazel. I loved the aspect of she took him for him, with all his flaws/differences and guess who flourished in her light? I loved the exit/reunion scene and in terms of performance when they practiced back stage and he took care of Hazel afterwards, those were hot.

Then, we have the main reason why the book losses a star. We are still fighting Birsha! Mark you I haven't read book 1.5 and even in that one he is still the bad guy. And the fact that for this story in particular, he got away sooooo easily and by the The End, he still hasn't been found, even when Esther and her crew from book 1 get into the mix.

I'm just tired of him as the villian. He is now turning into a soap opera villain, everyone fears him, he basically gets away with everything (which assists in building up each book) but in the end, no one defeats him and he keeps on disappearing off into the night. So, by book 3 if he isn't dead, I'll just be mad and disappointed (coz I'll still read book 3).

The unique aspect/difference with book 1 is that Hazel's men are basically all singular, puppy-love-heart eyes men who have been pining for her separately, then she brings them all together as opposed to book 1 where the guys were more or less a unit with a few additions courtesy of Esther.

The mole in the story wasn't shocking. I was actually expecting it to be two individuals, but when it turned out to be one person, the most obvious one and then add on the fact that like in book 1 we have a Mary who cringes at the monsters, the book also losses .25 stars for the similarity in plot.

Hazel's fight scene was also well written. My issue is we are told of the shitty history she had with her dad, there's the scene where she is metaphorically chained, yet that aspect of her background isn't really built upon/fully explored/extracted and dealt with.

At least for this book I knew it would be long and so I didn't let myself get frustrated with the time it took for us to get to the end.

In conclusion, slight differences but many similarities to book 1. Looking forward to book 3 being the end of Birsha and Amon is still my least favourite character in terms of the good guy monsters, even in this book.

Let me just start by saying, Kathryn Moon has done it AGAIN. Every time I open one of her books, it’s like falling into a beautifully written, emotionally charged trance. And this book? The Company of Fiends? It absolutely wrecked me in the best way possible.

Let’s talk about Nix/Hazel out FMC because oh my goodness, she has skyrocketed to the top of my all-time favorite heroines list. She’s not just strong; she’s resilient in a way that feels deeply human. She carries scars, both seen and unseen, but she never lets them dim her capacity to love or her dedication to her work (which, can we just acknowledge, is absolutely top-tier? ). Even when the voices in her head try to convince her she’s not enough, her inner light shines through. She’s a gift, truly.

„Everyone touch me, please," I said.
They slid closer, wings and claws and horns and tails all reaching for me. My men. My monsters.

And her monsters… where do I even begin? I went into this fully expecting to pick a favorite, but Kathryn made it absolutely impossible. But let’s be real, Hunter completely stole my heart. That gentle orc with his shy smiles and quiet strength? SWOON. What I loved most was the incredible dynamic between him and Hazel. He’s this beautifully layered character, soft-spoken and respectful, but when they’re in the mood ? Honey, that man transforms into the most PERFECT gentle Dom. The way he commands with such care, the whispered praise, the way he reads Hazel’s every breath and response, it was intimate, electric and so damn hot. Their kink play was everything, trusting, communicative and full of this deep emotional current that just FELT different from the others. The chemistry between them? Absolutely incendiary.

„You are so much more than I'd hoped for, Miss Nix ,more than I deserve."
"No,"
I gasped as he slid out to just his tip again. I fought against his grip on me to force him deeper, my toes slipping against the stair, ass grinding backwards. "No, you deserve this. You deserve a pretty pet who wants your cock and claws and tusks. Bury yourself in me, Hunter. Every inch of you. Please, I need you.“

Then came Roman, that irresistible imp with a boy-next-door vibe mixed with deliciously demonic energy. Jude completely stole my heart as Hazel’s unexpected kindred spirit, their emotional growth together was so beautifully written it brought tears to my eyes. Constantine (and Antin!) took a little longer to warm up to, but by the end? I was SOBBING over their journey. And Nireas, visually the most monstrous, and honestly? I adored him for it. His struggle to trust Hazel felt real and the groveling? Could have been better but he did what he could.

Nireas looked up at me like I was carving him open, as if it was him submitting to me.

What truly stood out in this book was the balance. While A Lady of Rooksgrave Manor was heavy on the spice (which I loved!), this installment wove a richer, more intricate plot that never once lagged. The mystery elements, especially with the unresolved “big bad” from book one, added tension and depth without overshadowing the romance. And the emotional arcs? Hazel’s journey of self-acceptance, paired with each of her men confronting their own demons, made every moment feel earned and meaningful.

I fell in love with you. Somewhere between the stage and your dressing room. Somewhere between sex and you staring at me like I'm a puzzle, I thought.

The found family theme in this book absolutely shattered me, in the best way. These monsters aren’t just lovers, they’re a unit. A home. The way they protect each other, challenge one another and love Hazel so completely? It’s everything. And the intimate scenes? WHEW. They’re not just spicy, they’re emotional, transformative and deeply connective. This isn’t just monster smut; it’s monster romance with soul.

Well, I really struggled, and I just couldn't continue with this book. I didn't really love the 1st book, and this one was so boring. This is just nonstop monster sex with zero connection. I didn't care about any of the characters. This does not need to be 500 pages when every chapter has sex.

I’m pretty sure I started this book in a slump and that’s my fault but I still struggled during the first 30% of the book. The book is a thick one too. But as the story continued and we discovered and learned more of our monsters I couldn’t help but keep going!

I’m going to go with 4 stars because the spice in this was exceptionally spicy 🥵 I would say I liked it but not loved as I did with book 1.

"You're a very rare woman, Hazel Nix," Hunter said, hands sliding under his shirt and up my back to draw me closer. "Someone so precious ought to be loved by many."

After leaving her home eight years ago, Hazel Nix found a home at the theatre performing with friends. Now that Hazel begins to define her own family and reveals her secret, actresses are being found murdered and all Hazel is determined to protect those she loves.

“ These weren't orgasms, they were deaths and rebirths, teased and tickled out of me, more the result of the crashing aches and sweeping soothes.”

In starting this book, I was looking forward to some polyamorous and diverse monster play. While the monsters offered unique talents, I wanted more group play. The overarching plot line took a backseat throughout, which was a bit disappointing. That said, there were some memorable erotic scenes.
