Between Sunlight is a collection of poetry by Australian author Emily Kaye Roberts. It is divided into two contrasting sections - Dusk and Dawn - and explores themes of love, loss, body image, depression and healing.
Emily Kaye Roberts is an Australian writer, poet and the author of Between Sunlight. In addition to writing, Roberts works as a performer and choreographer in Melbourne, Victoria, and enjoys reading, live music and connecting with nature in her spare time.
“We wrap our pinkie fingers around love like a wishbone, promising to give equally, and yet when it breaks, one always loses more.”
Between Sunlight is Roberts' debut book, and all I can say is: wow. I've been following Roberts' work for some time, having read some of her writing and earlier renditions of this poetry book, and I'm beyond proud to see this collection of short form poetry come into full fruition.
The structure of this book sets it apart from a lot of other poetry books I have read. Although each short poem is its own concept, Roberts maintains a steady flow and an almost narrative-like way. It follows a story of healing, love, and loss. The split of the book with half titled Dusk, and the other, Dawn, is a unique way to seperate the positives from the negatives.
The author had some longer pieces that read more like prose poetry, and I wanted to see that fleshed out a little more. I am really looking forward to Roberts' up and coming pieces, hopefully some of which that take advantage of that longer form poetry. Roberts has talent oozing out of her—and I can't wait to see where she goes with her writing when starting with such a great debut.
