A foreign and malevolent force has infiltrated and is corrupting the American government and culture. A killer is eliminating members of this force, and escaping detection and capture. Detective Wolf is assigned the case, and relentlessly tracks the killer.
This was a really interesting story. It was action packed, fast paced and makes you wonder how close to the true of today this could be. This is a new to me author and I will be looking for more stories by Mr Higgins.
The action starts with a SF-confessed, soon-to-be serial killer, who wishes to ride the world of the mouthpieces of a steadily-growing evil growing at the heart of a free America. But he is nearly foiled from the outset by a tenacious cop who happened to be in the vicinity, Detective Malachi.
Having once let him go, Malachi is determined not to let this one slip the net. However, the murderer is to strike several times again. Malachi soon begins to discern motive and possible means, bit he is to find that his colleagues are not receptive to his ideas.
He is to find an ally, as well as possible live, in an expert on terrorist politics in the beautiful Zahra, only now, both get pulled into greater danger.
This is a meaty plot with meaty themes, but the writer seems to have a good grasp on how certain beliefs and ideologies might be deployed by manipulative and seditious minds. Whether or not the writer has agendas beyond crafting a classy thriller will be something the writer will need to decide for themselves.
The characters are well fleshed out. The hero Malachi is as damaged and complex a policeman as might be wished for, and he certainly has a talent for pitti g himstlves in harm's way in his bid to get at the truth - making for good, suspenseful reading. Recommended.
Thanks to Black Rose Publishers and Library Thing for the book. 3 stars
Routine political thriller: the hero cop who is frequently in trouble with the “higher ups” of the department (in this case, the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, D.C.) an intriguing love interest, a crazed killer, the madman’s victims, etc, etc, etc. You know the drill. There is one major writing flaw that kept the novel at three stars for me: lack of detail, local color, being able to see, hear, feel and smell the people and the environment. Best examples of writers who get this right are Michael Connelly, James Lee Burke and Craig Johnson, who all produce police dramas that draw the reader into the story.
The drama in this novel is fairly well done, but also delivers some repetitious phrasing, numerous typos (editors, get with it!!) and flat writing. As I read the storyline, I felt fear, which was probably the author’s intent. It seemed so outrageous that I felt I might be reading a fictionalized take on real events. By the end I was thinking more rationally (I hope). The novel’s ending leaves an opening for the book to become the first in a series.
If you are looking for an action read that could be pulled out of the here and now, this piece fits the bill. It has politics, terrorism, suspense, action, evil, villains, heroes, manipulators and a plot that could be too close to reality in today's world.
The plot is solid, the characters are relatable; but, there is something that seems to make this a longer read than it should be. What that something is, I cannot put my finger on.
What I can put my finger on is that if you are a numbers person, this book will drive you crazy! The math for life events of the hero DO NOT add up and while it is just a few details, it is VERY distracting for those that notice instantly bad math. The first time, the math was so in your face off that I literally had to stop reading and focus on just the bad math and try to fix it and deal with it. Then the next time, it was okay wait, this makes it even more absurd. Maybe the math details of life events should have been left out and hopefully, in the future the author will let the numbers be mysteries to the reader. :)
A timely read in the realm of anti Instamatic and religious unrest, we are drawn into this world. A powerful read that will question your views of the way you see life.
A newly homicide detective who changed his career after his father was killed in the Boston Marathon faces his first real test as an officer. He wants to prove his self when his first case revolves around a series of murders in District of Columbia.
Another seeks revenge for the murder of his girlfriend by a Islamist infiltrator who grew up repress and the only outlet for him is violence. Bodies will soon escalate as they will ultimately meet.
My favorite novel. I finished it in one sitting!! Higgins addresses a real threat in the most entertaining way imaginable. His experience as a retired supervisory special agent, combined with his analytic mind and brilliant talent, deliver a unique experience and perspective that only he can provide. As with all Higgins’ novels, I had to begin reading this early in the day because I was expecting that I’ll fail to put it down. Brilliant work!
Are we all living each day with our “heads in the sand”? Do we have any idea what’s going on? Conspiracy theories aside, is there plans to take over the United States? It’s been said by many that the country will fall from the inside, without a shot fired in war! If you could stop events that would contribute to this downfall, would you? Even if what you do is wrong, both morally and legally? How do you decide?
Right wing propaganda..conspiracy theories, right wing politics. Very little real mystery.
The book was like a right wing propaganda machine filled with right wing conspiracies and politics. I plodded through it, but there was little mystery.
