Hana Blackwood is a woman without an identity. Once, she was a combat medic in the US Army. Now she’s a civilian. Then she was a decorated detective with the St. Louis county police department. Now, she’s not. She had a family once, but she lost them to a civil war most of the world has forgotten. She’s adrift. Then she meets the Romero family. Someone murdered their son three years ago. The police never even found a suspect. Hana doesn’t know the victim or his family, but she understands loss. She can’t bring the victim back, but maybe she can help a family understand their son’s death. Only, the victim was hardly innocent. And his killers haven’t gone far. As Hana investigates and draws closer to the truth, dangerous men draw closer to her. But Hana’s no damsel in distress. She’s smart, capable, and absolutely lethal. Unfortunately, so are the men she’s hunting.
Night Work is the first thrilling novel in New York Times' bestselling author Chris Culver's Hana Blackwood series. If you like Lee Child or David Baldacci, you'll love this series.
Chris Culver is the New York Times bestselling author of the Ash Rashid series of mysteries. After graduate school, Chris taught courses in ethics and comparative religion at a small liberal arts university in southern Arkansas. While there and when he really should have been grading exams, he wrote The Abbey, which spent sixteen weeks on the New York Times bestseller's list and introduced the world to Detective Ash Rashid.
Chris has been a storyteller since he was a kid, but he decided to write crime fiction after picking up a dog-eared, coffee-stained paperback copy of Mickey Spillane's I, the Jury in a library book sale. Many years later, his wife, despite considerable effort, still can't stop him from bringing more orphan books home. The two of them, along with a labrador retriever named Roy, reside near St. Louis where Chris is hard at work on his next novel.
Your typical mystery, with multiple storylines. The bad guys always seem to be one step ahead until the end. Plus, once you think the case is resolved, there is one final twist. Chris Culver ranks right up there as one of my go to mystery authors.
I really enjoyed this book. It's so refreshing to read a book with a strong female character that doesn't allow her life to be defined by the men around her or her good looks. Hana is intelligent, compassionate, and fiercely determined to help those in need and solve any mystery that comes her way. Night Work is well researched and well written. Hana's poignant backstory is provided in bits and pieces that bring the reader to a deep understanding of her character, choices, and reactions. I've read most of Chris Culver's work, enjoyed every book so far, and will definitely read the entire Hana Blackwood series.
This was a great read. Chris does a very good job of teaching you about a region and what is happening without allowing it to overtake the plot. I enjoyed this very much. I did have trouble distinguishing that the main character was a girl once we started on the adult part of her life, but I think that was by design. It was very good, as all of the books I’ve read of his have been.
After recently reading other books by Chris Culver, I read Night Work. I especially enjoyed the uniqueness of the main character, Hana. The depth of her background and the challenges in her personal life added much to the overall story told in this book. I will definitely read the next book in this series!
I enjoyed reading this book because Hana is a great character. She has an interesting back story which informs her actions. She is resilient and smart and of course you care enough about her to want her to succeed.
Liked the main character. Knew the book would be a wild ride because I have read lots if culver books. My favorite will always be that ash amid series.
