The Scent of Magic

Rate this book
Trapped. Sold. Hated.

You’d think that being a magical Princess would be a perfect life, right?
Wrong.

The second-born daughter of the witch Queen, my mother treats me like a possession. A pet.
And then I’m sold to her enemies.

The shifters hate us, and now I’m trapped in their den. I’m in danger no matter where I turn.
And when I meet my three captors, it’s not just my life at risk. It’s my heart.

One wants me. One hates me. One hates to want me.

But I’m no delicate flower, and they’re about to find out how far I’ll go to survive. Especially when the threats just keep on coming.

The Scent of Magic is a full-length paranormal romance. It is a reverse harem novel, meaning the main character has more than one love interest, and contains steamy, adult scenes and language. It is book one in the Emerald Wood Pack series.

I can't believe this is a debut novel!!

Incredibly well written the characters hook you in and don't let you go. You dislike the ones you are meant to not because the author says so but because you genuinely don't like them . Cordelia is the perfect mix of sassy, strong and a little bit vulnerable. Affected by her upbringing in the ways you'd expect but made all the stronger for it.

The guys are perfect. I loved Noah from the start and doubt I'm alone on that! Zeke had me pondering and as for Liam? Well I'll let you read it and decide!!

The plot flows beautifully and there's enough suspense to keep you on your toes. As for the steam? well there's no disappointments there either. Highlights being the camp fire and the mating!!!

The end however is just mean!! Talk about leaving you wanting more. Book 2 asap please!

As anyone who has read my reviews before knows...I'm not always super keen on paranormal romance. There are definitely rules to the exception (maybe I need to stop being surprised when I find ones I like) and this was one of them.

The Scent of Magic is the author's debut novel, which certainly doesn't read like one. The characters were realistic and likeable, and it had a good mix of love, lust, anxiety, fear, laughter and NO SHE ISN'T GOING TO LEAVE IT LIKE THAT! 😂

Definitely recommended to anyone that enjoys paranormal RH, magic, shifters, enemies to lovers with a bit of bullying thrown in.

This is a fantastic book. The characters are so real. The attention to detail is amazing. Found that I could not put it down. A great read from start to finish. Can't wait for the next book.

The attraction between Cordiela and the men happens so quickly, she falls into bed with Noah so quickly. A new life with so many changes and everyone does not like her because of preconceived ideas never once asking her opinion or thoughts. The story line is good and filed with so much sex that you would think that was the most important part of the story. I almost feel like the author is using the sex scenes to make up for content or lack of creativity in the story line.

I will still ready the next book it will be interesting to se how it all pans out. I’m not sure why they rushed off when they knew they needed to collect two more stones to correct the wrong. That had been done. Great planning, but such is life.

3.5 stars rounded up

I thought this was a great debut RH set in a fantasy realm alongside the human realm. Lots of modern phrases used and some modern conveniences (jeans, beer bottles, things like that) but not everything is modern. The FMC is a witch and a princess, but she's not treated as a princess because her mother (the Queen) is pretty darn evil. The FMC meets our three love interests after the Queen makes a peace agreement based on marriage with the Alpha of the shifters. I enjoyed how much of a fighter the FMC was, even when the odds are against her. She's also still a compassionate and caring person, despite her mother and the abuse she's suffered. The FMC has to show the wolves that she's not like the other witches they've met/heard of and it's an uphill battle. There's some growth in this first book and I think she'll only become stronger the rest of the series.

That fight to prove herself as a good person is especially real with two of the guys. There are definitely some bullying elements and strong enemies to lovers vibes, but as much as I don't usually go for these tropes, I still liked this book and never felt like I needed to put it down. The third love interest is a huge sweetheart right from the beginning and I loved him and the counterpoint he served against the other two, who took longer. The relationships with our two hard-headed guys take time and have their ups and downs throughout the story. Even with that happening, there is plenty of well-written steam in this first book. I'm really hoping that the greater relationship challenges are behind these characters and book 2 can focus on strengthening what they have.

There is a bit of OW drama from a small group of females who have been involved with a couple of the guys, but there's no love in those relationships and no sexual scenes of the guys with OW (although at least one time is implied). No mm or ff in this book.

There's a fair amount of action and plot with wolf vs. witch fighting at times, the previously mentioned evil Queen having some sort of evil plan, and also a greater purpose that I think we'll learn more about in book 2. There are funny parts, drama, and that steam I mentioned earlier to keep things interesting. The book ends on a bit of a cliffy, but more of a "what's going to happen next" danger. I'll be reading the next book to see how these characters and the plot continue to develop.

Oh my life I couldn’t put it down. I can’t believe this is Samantha Jayne’s debut novel.

The relationships and character build is swift but believable (so rarely done).

The steam builds without being completely in your face (and it is HOT - yeeeesh!)

Original and exciting. I CANNOT wait for the next one!

This was a good read. It is pretty steamy but has a great plot. This author is very new to me and although I read a lot of Alpha Wolf reads this one shocked me. It’s not my typical read. I’m not big on erotica or multiple mates but this was so different. I am glad I took a chance. Well worth it.

I was hooked on The Scent of Magic from the very first page. Samantha Jayne really created another exciting world of witches and shifters. It had everything, drama, suspense, great storyline and it was HOT!

The main character is a strong, sassy female who doesn’t take any rubbish. The secondary characters were both loveable and awful, scary and sexy!

The cliffhanger is all too much and I need the second book ASAP!

A thrilling adventure into a magical realm of wolves and witches. This is the first book published by this author and it does not disappoint! Gripping storyline, seriously sexy scenes and a good dab of humour too. Beautifully written and fast paced, making you want to keep reading page after page. I can't wait for the second book in this series to be released!

2.5 Stars or Unrated…IDK

I can’t decide if I want to rate this series or leave it unrated.

I made is 40% into the first book, got bored, skimmed the second book and read the last half of the third book.

In other circumstances I might have enjoyed this series. Maybe. It just wasn’t interesting enough to hold my attention. I didn’t like how the FMC was hated by her harem throughout most of the series. I didn’t like the constant abuse she suffered. The plot-line wasn’t all that interesting until the last book.

I could see all the “twists and turns and revelations” coming from a mile away so there were no real surprises.

Also, can we talk about steam? These characters use their hands and mouths like 75% of the time. The scenes will start off sexy and then will just peter off after ☝️and 👅. It’s really unsatisfying!

- 👀 First person POV (almost exclusively singular POV, but rare glimpses from MMC’s)
-🦄 Fantasy RH with 3 males
- 🐺 Wolf shifters and 🪄 witches
- 🔪 Enemies to lovers
- 🔥 fast burn
- 🌶 medium/high steam
- 🫦 kinks: DVP, DP, spanking, choking, biting
- 🚫 No MM/FF, No fated mates
- ‼️ MMC’s have sex with OW in beginning of book 1 after they meet FMC, flashbacks of torture and abuse, death of an MMC, betrayal (lots and lots of betrayal),

HOLY FREAKING COW!!!! This book is unlike anything I have EVER read. HANDS DOWN. I am in love with this world and these characters.... they have honestly become such a huge part of me. This series is definitely meant to be honored in all of it's glory on my bookshelves. I am in love. IN. LOVE. Can you freaking believe this is Samantha's debut novel? Her words, her flow, her literal magic... is beyond explainable... EVERYTHING IS UTTER PERFECTION. PERFECTION.

Cordelia is the perfect heroine. She is funny, beautiful, smart, loving, kind, caring, loyal, stubborn, strong... just the perfect amount of everything to make the perfect girl. The 3 boys, Liam, Zeke, and Noah are all perfect in their own ways.. perfect for Cordelia, each providing her something she needs... they are just.... *chef's kiss* SWOOOOOOOONNNNN

The plot, drama, suspense, and just everything about it is so alluring, so captivating, so freaking intriguing. I. Could. Not. Put. This. Down. Make sure you make time for this book, because once you start.. you won't be able to stop until you finish it. Even if my life depended on it, there was no way in hell I was putting this book down. This book was steamy af and full of so much action. Everything is so believable, which is hard to do, so that just goes to show you how freaking talented Samantha Jayne truly is. I loved watching the relationship between Cor and the boys grow and seeing how everything all played out. Their journey is so exhilarating and all I seem to want is more, more, more.

This book deserves all the stars, wish I could give it more than 5 stars. So incredibly good. You got me for life Samantha Jayne, because WOW. This book deserves a freaking Oscar.

Typical and a little boring

The book started out promising a heroine who is abused by her family being given to a different community a community who hate her kind which are witches. She’s going to the shifters. But once we get to the shifters the story is a bit mundane, and boring. Within 22% of the book our FMC is already banging one of the guys. Now I’m not slut shaming at all, I just personally like a little depth to my stories before the characters head to the bedroom. I like the long fought tension. But this wasn’t it.

They could have a mystical connection but a lot of the things that happened just didn’t make sense logically if her mom is so cruel and doesn’t care about the shifters why isn’t she launching attacks now? The whole time we do get some depth to the guys and Cordelia‘s relationship but I just felt there were still elements missing. She supposedly trained but we barely see it. Before she came to them she didn’t know how to use her magic but now suddenly on her own she can? She was left alone a lot growing up as punishment and such so why didn’t she do these practices then? Was she bound? Idk. It’s not clear.

The end everything happens suddenly and is over quickly. I may continue only because I’m not convinced someone who died is dead. I also suspected that the Alpha female was alive. Though why Cordelia’s mom would keep them alive this long remains to be seen. I’m just not sure if it’ll keep my interested. I may attempt book 2 for answers, but if it as similarly paced as this one I may not end up finishing it.

She was always meant to be an author !

This is a debut novel, but it certainly does not feel like I’m reading a first ever book by this new author!

I don’t like to give spoilers away as that annoys me in other reviews when I am determining to read a book lol, so I will try and convince you without speaking a word or scene as I believe every reader interrupts books and characters differently in our own unique ways.

All I can say is I did judge the cover initially thinking it would be an easily written off 3 star novel, but decided based on the reviews and that it was a first novel I wanted to give the author a go and support her!

I couldn’t put it down and I can’t believe a first time author was able to pull emotions from me reading this book whether it was lust, apprehension, hurt, tingles etc. I will say though that I really enjoy that the heroine doesn’t let males walk all over her or just blindly accept when they make an apology, it’s actually a realistic expectation that she may never trust him again and he has to work at her forgiveness not a simple “I’m sorry now let’s bang” LOL.

I can’t wait for book 2, I will continue this series and I’m off to purchase the novel now to support this new author 💪🏻. I would also like to note that someone better reappear in the next book I will be devastated if not ! Does that intrigue you 😉

I don't know if they're really are spoilers in the review but I'd rather make someone cautious before they read instead of ruining the story.

I was pleasantly surprised by my enjoyment of this book. I'm in a reading challenge involving baby authors and I've been struggling.

There's enough world building that you're not left wondering about the environment. It's made it clear your not on earth but it's similar.

I like Cordelia's harem although Liam is a bit of a jerk. Noah is easily my favorite. And I like that Zeke confessed his issues so they could work past them. Saffy was a nice edition although she really could have been fleshed out more. The mean girls were typical although I'm wondering if there will be resolution there in another book. We really don't meet too many other pack members.

The villain is nothing out of the ordinary...I want power blah blah.

Cordelia isn't a b@dass, nor is she a doormat. She's a good person determined to make the best of a bad situation and works toward that goal. I don't have anything negative to say but I also don't have a "OMG she is freaking amazing" vibe either. I like how she loves openly, how she thinks and observes and tries to understand.

I do plan to watch for the next book. I'm excited to see baby authors succeed!

5 ⭐ for Cordelia because I love her! 🔥
I loved this series! The plot is engaging and interesting, not too overly creative or different, but I'd rather a plot well done than one 100% original and half-assed. So Cordelia is a witch princess but she's mistreated by her mother the Queen and isolated from the kingdom. Her dream is to escape her mother's clutches. She gets her wish when her mother sells her to the shifters Alpha in exchange for peace between the races. The issue is that the shifters despise witches (for a good reason) so Cordelia's life won't be easy there either.

There are three mates: Liam the ass, Noah the cutie and Zeke the grumpy. They all have different things to offer, and don't blend in as it happens in many RH. I liked all of them, even Liam the douche. There's a bit of drama (including OW drama), but Cordelia deals with it with her head held high and her fists posed. She's a badass.

For a first book, this is really great. I loved the author's writing style. The only thing I wanted more were descriptions. I still don't know or remember Cordelia's eye color, so it's difficult to picture her at times.

An absolutely amazing read from a first time author. Finished with a finesse that even some more veteran authors lack.

I was obsessed with this story from the off. Cordy the FMC is full of snark and sass that I am In love with. She takes no prisoners and no nonsense.

We find her starting out the story as a pawn in her evil mothers games with the local werewolf pack. As a witch she is feared let alone the fact her mother is an Evil queen.

We see the pack reluctantly welcome her within the ranks until cordy proves herself to be worthy and they realise that the queen's manevolence extends to her own family.

Enter Noah, Liam and Zeke... Damn do these guys tick all the boxes. Liam and Zeke being the current alphas sons and Noah their ride or die bestie. Liam and Zeke (along with daddy) have the biggest axe to grind with cordy yet find themselves taken in by her snark and we see relationships start to blossom and bloom.

Can not wait to dive in to book 2 😍

I should've stopped at the words "magical princess".

The list of things that left me confused and frustrated is never-ending, but the relationship between the heroine and her mother takes the cake. What exactly warranted that level of hatred from the very beginning? The queen was a bad parent, but children tend to make excuses for bad parents and love them regardless. It's more complicated than 'you're bad and I hate you'. The heroine's excessive hatred towards her mother with not a drop of affection was not believable.

Also, what is up with the female antagonist being called a 'slut' so casually by everyone (including her own daughter)?

And don't even get me started on those boys. Telling her to leave and then getting mad when she does try to leave, they were giving me whiplash.

All in all, I'd say all my frustrations can be chalked up to bad writing.

Entertaining first book

What an entertaining book, Cordelia was an interesting FMC, open to love even having suffered horribly at the hands of her mother. Sometimes the book veered into her being a little too perfect, however pulled it back pretty quickly. I liked that she didn't forgive and forget easily. It finished really strongly and I'm looking forward to the next book.

This writing and story is miles ahead of most shifter books and most fated-mates. I can't say I liked the turn at the end that segues to volume 2. It would have been really interesting to see the pack/magic complexities and the character issues wrapped up in a stand-alone. I'm not interested when it's spread across volumes.

I absolutely loved this book! Cordelia is such a darling tough as nails witch, how can one not fall in love with her. She’s gone through so much and still in the end she endures sadness and a bit of a surprise. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for this feisty female in the next book.

So good but Liam really has to grovel , he has said multiple times that he wished she was dead and has slut shamed her. I loved getting his pov, cause then we got to see how much guilt he had. Noah is my favourite, then Zeke and currently on my shit list Liam .
