Rate this book
In 2112, dystopia is upon us, and the United Nations Authority is trying to stop energy and technology behemoth GIATCOM from destroying society once and for all. At the vortex of this futuristic struggle is twenty-first-century inventor Dr. Ben Richards, who created a way to harness wind power, a clean and renewable energy that could have changed the course of humanity if he hadn’t died under mysterious circumstances. The UNA determines that keeping Richards alive in 2017 is key to saving the world from becoming a nuclear wasteland. Meanwhile, GIATCOM is using every method at its disposal, including enhanced humans and android doppelgangers, to thwart that effort and capture Richards for its own purposes, setting up an epic battle between future powers in the past.

There comes a time in life when you have seen enough of the world to recognize when a story is trying to warn us, not just entertain us. ReCOgnition: Oxygen Debt Part 1 feels very much like that kind of book.
Set in the year 2112, this novel presents a future where even oxygen is regulated and accounted for. As someone who grew up in simpler times, I found that idea both chilling and thought provoking. Breathing is life itself, and turning it into a measurable debt speaks volumes about how far society can drift when control becomes more important than compassion.
The dystopian atmosphere is strong and unsettling, yet what stayed with me most was not the technology or the systems of authority. It was the human struggle underneath it all. The quiet resistance. The longing for freedom. The reminder that no matter how advanced the world becomes, the human spirit still yearns for dignity and choice.
This is not a light read, but it is an important one. It encourages reflection about where we are headed as a society and what we may be willing to trade for convenience or security. I appreciate stories that challenge the reader to think beyond the page.
A thoughtful and sobering beginning to what promises to be a powerful series.

BOOK REVIEW OF 'RECO2GNITION BY @reco2gnition

•ReCO2gnition is a fast-paced sci-fi thriller that is intellectually stimulating and entertaining.

•The story takes readers to a future where devastation has taken place and humans pursuit of immortality has led to the creation of machines that could develop their own cognition.

•Operation Reset is the only way to save the human race from the limited resources and life left in the future. The short story interlaces subgenres, taking the reader through a mix of thrilling science fiction, political machinations, and romantic time travel.

•It is a convincing portrayal of a potentially dark future and a warning about our current lack of commitment and reckless environmental behavior.

•The vision and conviction of the author is not only outstanding but serious. The new generation is taking environmental challenges seriously and trying to spread the idea through story telling.

ReCognition - Oxygen Debt, Part One by Mark Dowson is a compelling and thought-provoking start to a dystopian sci-fi trilogy. The novel blends climate science, time travel, artificial intelligence, and human emotion into a gripping story that feels both imaginative and eerily relevant to our current world.

Set in the year 2112, the story presents a chilling vision of a future shaped by environmental collapse and unchecked corporate power. What makes the book especially engaging is how it connects that bleak future to a single moment in the past—the fate of wind-energy scientist Dr. Ben Richards. The concept of sending a humanoid guardian back in time to protect him adds tension and excitement, while the deeper themes about destiny, mental health, and redemption give the narrative real emotional depth

The strength of ReCOgnition lies in how its parts connect. What starts as a race to protect an inventor slowly expands into a broader struggle over who controls innovation and truth. Each book adds another layer without losing focus. The story feels planned rather than improvised, which makes the progression satisfying. As a reader, you feel the tension grow naturally, not artificially. Mark Dowson delivers a series that values continuity and consequence, making the experience feel cohesive and emotionally grounded from beginning to end.

What makes the ReCOgnition series stand out is its sense of continuity. Each book feels like a necessary step rather than a separate story. The movement from saving one life to confronting global consequences is handled with care and clarity. Dowson’s writing allows readers to follow complex ideas without confusion. By the time Part 2 concludes, the reader understands not just what is happening, but why it matters. This series is ideal for readers who appreciate structured, idea driven science fiction.

The book is 150 pages long. The pace of the story is also fine. The book is a good mixture of science, story and action.
The time travel part makes it look like a good sci-fi movie. Though I don't like sci-fi much but I have watched a few movies and read this book. If you want to start reading sci-fi you can definitely go with this one.

We spent a good portion of our discussion unpacking the ethical implications of AI governance in 2112. Dowson doesn’t just speculate he constructs a plausible geopolitical trajectory. The tension between corporate monopolies and planetary survival feels uncomfortably realistic.
