I’m a marine biology student studying in Tasmania. When I saw this book I thought it would make a great accompaniment to the wetsuit I got for my birthday.
I am so impressed with this book. It is written with integrity and provides comprehensive information about sharks without any sensationalism or corniness.
Since mine is the first review, the contents of this book are:
First Contact - The 19th Century.
Shark! An Evolving Modern Perspective.
White Shark Captures in Tasmanian Waters.
Shark Attacks in Tasmanian Waters.
Encounters With White Sharks in Tasmanian Waters.
Hidden Lives Revealed.
Predatory Brethen.
I was fascinated by every chapter and learned so much. The encounter stories told by survivors were scary but the stories told by witnesses of fatal attacks were harrowing. My blood turned cold and hairs stood on end. There were word for word accounts overlain with historical or geographical context.
Jaws is still the number one movie to scare me for life and I have been neurotic about sharks ever since although not enough to stop me from being a surf lifesaver when I was younger.
I learned an enormous amount about sharks from this book. Although it is still too cold to go in the water, I feel like I can swim in the ocean without expecting a shark to lunge at me through every wave I go over. I think I know where to be most wary. You will have to read it for yourself to find out but I will certainly think twice about swimming in certain places. It also makes perfect sense now why a shark banged into my leg this year in the place it did.
Chris Black did such a fantastic job documenting everything shark related in this book. It must have taken years to write.
