Sarah Hand

Sarah Hand is a papier mâche artist, illustrator, and art teacher. A puppet show she created in her late 20s inspired her to pursue the art of papier mâche in earnest. This messy, fun medium was an undiscovered well of inspiration for Sarah. Creating creatures and puppets led to teaching the magic of papier mâche to children and adults alike.

She has taught at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Visual Arts Center of Richmond, Studio Two Three, art retreats, and online. Her dolls have been featured in Somerset Studio magazine, and she has had many solo art exhibits of her art. In 2015, Sarah was commissioned to make seven large papier mâche portraits for the newly opened Quirk Hotel, a boutique hotel in Richmond, Virginia. Her most popular portrait is Cat Baby, the background subject of many Instagram selfies!

When she’s not elbows deep in paste and paper, you can find Sarah painting, drawing, and dreaming up stories and images for picture books.

Sarah lives and creates in Richmond, Virginia with her husband and three-legged cat, Roger.
