An entertaining but rushed story in a promising historical paranormal setting. It was a bit unclear to me if this was AU or if all the paranormal elements were unknown to "regular people". Not that it matters in this novella. Mixing up vampires and pirates is a super fun idea anyway, could even add steampunk in there. 😅 Not that the whole piracy part really was present here much, I think the second book is for that.
There was a lovely building of atmosphere and plenty of plot, but it was all super fast and also superficial. These things should have really been tapped into properly and not rushed through. On top of all the paranormal lore and character history, there were some delicious tidbits like Thomas being practically floored by Dáire's beauty, while Dáire considers himself a decrepit old man. The romance is instalust, almost ridiculously so, though that I wouldn't mind it in itself if it wasn't so rushed.
It also felt a bit jarring how many times the house servants were described as 'Blacks' (noun). Even in the historical setting it felt quite unnecessary. They were actual present people in there, would these characters had referred to themselves as 'Whites'?
Still, I am quite interested in the second book, so let's see if it's an improvement.

A very nice start of a series. I say start because this one is super short so we just get a glimpse of the world and the characters' backstory but the glimpse we get is enough to set a very promising, action filled, supernatural galore, and very steamy beginning. The chemistry between the two main characters, one vampire and one pirate is a bit insta-lust/insta-love but I don't care because I love a good chemistry kind of situation.
I really liked the side characters and the world building and I'm really interested to find out what's going to happen between Dáire and Thomas.
There's something else I liked a lot, and that's that there's not much drama. Nothing unnecessary! We get the action, the confrontation, mystery, the characters get to know each other, and they talk! Wild, right? Talking! Well, I truly liked the way it was written, simple without taking anything from the historical vibe of narration. I have high hopes for the possible sequel or sequels.

The Vampire's Pirate

The characters all had strong personalities. The storyline was a great one. I kept picturing it as a story similar to one by Anne Rice in tone and writing. (Not the storyline itself.)
I loved this book and can't wait to read more of the series.

QUICK and GOTHICALLY MAGICAL, this LOW SPICE M/M ROMANCE between a vampire and pirate was beautifully well written to read! I loved the first part in Dáire & Thomas’s love story duology and am excited to read the second one soon! Would recommend if you need something quick to read for the fall and spooky season!

Listen. Take it from this New Orleanian…this author knows New Orleans. Also this author can write the fuck out of a short or a novella which can be difficult.

This is a quick read. I am used to this author’s books being a little longer but this one still has some great depth for being a little shorter than others in her back list. Malone is an old vampire and Thomas is a pirate, or privateer if you ask him. Both have been summoned to the home of the vampire who fancies herself the queen of New Orleans. Neither man fancies following someone else’s orders, especially someone like her, so they both decide to stop her reign before it gets any stronger. These two are immediately attracted to each other. I loved these two MCs and also Malone’s vampire child Dorothea and her mate Lillie. Superb setting and tale telling here. We are left with a bit of what happens next but I hope to see the Vampire and his Pirate’s story continue because our ending is a tad bittersweet. Excellent read though.

3.5 “if I died without knowing the feel of Thomas Clifton’s body against mine, his prick inside me, my life would be the lesser” stars
This book is nothing I would normally have read before but i’ve been into a reading slump for months and as an effort to get out of it, i’ve been reading a lot of books out of my comfort zone. Also this is a short and light and fluffy story, which is exactly what I needed right now, i’ve almost only been reading angst so this was a nice change of pace and I really enjoyed it. Also i’m a sucker for vampires of any form so that also pulled me in. All in all, I’m really glad I ended up really enjoying this one.
Brief summary
Dáire and his family (his daughter and his daughter’s companion) are summoned by a vampire, Clarice Arsenault. While there, he meets Thomas, a very handsome pirate. They start pining after the other as soon as they meet. Clarice is trying to form a group of evil vampires to take over New Orleans and she has informations on both of our main characters and is trying to blackmail them so that they help her group. They both start exploring the castle to find ways to stop her and they fall in love through multiple encounters in between their explorations.
First, this book was set in 1805 and I really enjoyed how the setting was shown and I liked how we got to see New Orleans (where the book is set) as how it would have been like back then, it was so fascinating to read about.
Second, I loved the writing in the book. It was very pretty and very descriptive and flowed super well.
Third, I’m a sucker for flirting and pining in books and there was so much of both of these in this book and it really pleased me to read it all.
Fourth, reading this book was a lovely one hour of absolute fun and fluff and I really enjoyed the experience. Also the plot was easy to follow and really entertaining. It had so much fun reading this. Also the humour in this was quite snarky and a little sarcastic and I really enjoyed it, it really helped making the book a lovely reading experience for me.
I really enjoyed reading this book and I will be reading the next book in this series for sure.

The Vampire’s Pirate is the first book in a new duology by Liv Rancourt. The story sets up an interesting world with a historical paranormal set in New Orleans. For a novella-length story, I think Rancourt manages to blend in a lot of different elements. We have lore for vampires primarily, but the story also touches on werewolves and the various magic users. There is also a nice sense of setting, and Rancourt’s writing really evokes that sultry, deep south atmosphere and time period. Upon arrival at the vampire queen’s home, the group all has to first figure out what is going on, as well as how to stop her, so there is a lot to untangle. I felt at times there is too much happening here for a shorter book, as there are so many moving parts and not a lot of time to really develop things fully. As a result, the storyline didn’t flow quite as smoothly as I would have liked.

I reviewed these together because they start and finish the same tale, and both are fairly short—easy to read as one extended novel. Although the author fondly refers to them as “a little bit of fluff,” I think they’re rather better than that. Rancourt manages to imagine the world of New Orleans in 1805 and 1806—just a few years after Thomas Jefferson negotiates the purchase of the Louisiana Territory from a cash-strapped Napoleon. She gets the details down very nicely. The city is still small and colonial, a mixture of Spanish and French. It’s port on the Mississippi is already an important trade route to the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. This is a place on the verge of greatness, and a wide range of people are gathering there to be part of it.
A two-hundred-year-old Irish-born vampire, Daire Malone, is trying to settle into this rough little city. He’s accompanied by his vampire daughter Dorothea Browne, and her companion Libbie Leloup. As Libbie’s name might suggest, she is no ordinary young woman, either. Daire is haunted by a rough start and an abusive longtime enthrallment to his creator; but we get to know the kind of man is truly is.
A command invitation from a female vampire who fancies herself the local queen—something Daire is not happy about—takes the trio to a brand-new Creole plantation house miles outside of town on the bayou. There they meet Captain Thomas Clifton, and his peg-legged first mate, Cager. Clifton is a pirate—or, more legally recognized as a French agent, and thus a privateer. The captain is not happy with Mlle. Arsenault’s invitation either, as he enjoys his freedom to sail and sell and trade. Clifton is a man of honor and mercy (just remember that America’s John Hancock was, himself, a privateer).
Rancourt keeps the story focused, bringing in allusions to dark magic and enslavement. The Creole culture of New Orleans is particularly adaptable to the author’s narrative choices. The would-be vampire queen is a problem. Captain Clifton’s long absences at sea is another one. Daire and his little family must determine where their connection to the doughty sea captain and his loyal crew will take them. Neither Malone nor Clifton quite feel they deserve any sort of happiness, and yet each knows that the other must, somehow, play a part in his life.
This is a story that could be hammy and absurd, and somehow Rancourt makes it tender and action-packed, and weirdly plausible. OK, it’s not “Mutiny on the Bounty,” but then again, who cares? I enjoyed these books immensely.

Swashbuckling pirate meets powerful vampire - how could I resist?
This was a delight. I loved the characters and the story. It felt natural and smooth and I adored the imagery used to set the scene. the author effectively created intrigue and tension between the two MC's and their situation putting duty and desire against each other as well as selfishness and the need to help others.
I would have liked to see more of the world building and descriptions of the characters existing in New Orleans during the time period. This wasn't strictly necessary to further the plot just my own desire to read more! However there were some descriptions that were a little uncomfortable and I am not sure how accurate this was considering setting and the narrative style so be prepared for some uncomfortable name calling and situations.
I did also feel like the big bad was a bit cliche and there was not much depth to the motivations which was a little disappointing however the main quartet were my favourite part of this duology. The banter and obvious love between the characters warmed my heart - I am a sucker for we will stick together as a family and this was delivered perfectly (in my opinion) and the cherry on top was the addition of the Pirates who added a bit of rugged charm and worldliness to the vampire family.
The Vampires Pirate sets up the scene for the next book and how the characters handle the aftermath (who knew books could be so scary). I am most looking forward to the Happy Ever After I am hoping for!

Daire Malone has been a vampire since 1598, at least. He’s now residing at Vieux Carre in the hurricane, insect and humidity ridden New Orleans of 1805. He’s in the company of his daughter, Dorothea Browne and her long time companion Elizabeth “Libbie” Leloup.
Daire has done many things that he cannot forgive himself for and he struggles with the spirits of those he killed.
In rising, Daire finds out from Dorothea and Libbie, that they have received a summons from Mlle. Clarice Arsenault, a vampiress, that has a reputation. Daire knows of the warnings that have been shared about Mlle. Arsenault. He knows it’s not a good idea to attend, but by not attending they would seem to honor her. Daire’s boredom also gets the better of him and they decide to attend, but not without precautions and a plan.
Captain Thomas Clifton of the ship Le Reve has also received a summons to Mlle. Arsenault country home. He has a definite purpose to attend but he’s not without his long time second, Micajah “Cager” Longe.
On arrival to Mlle. Arsenault’s, Daire and Thomas have already found each other intriguing. All have observed the strange happenings before they have even set foot in the house. Most concerning is Mlle. Arsenault’s commands.
As the attraction between Daire and Thomas starts to grow, so does the danger. What course will they all take to deal with the evil vampiress?
Liv Rancourt brings forth a great tale of the 1800’s in New Orleans. Vampire Daire Malone and Captain Thomas Clifton are two smart, charming, romantic and brave gentlemen. This short story was wonderfully written and has everything paranormal for a quick read. From pirates to vampires, werewolves and evil spells, danger and of course the evil vampiress herself.
Of course, there’s great secondary characters that have important roles in the story: Dorothea, Libbie, Cager, Etta and Kimmy.
I hate that this ended! I wanted more! I was left with this thought, a pirates life is destined to the sea and a vampires is destined to the land, to wait for his lovers return. Since this is a duology, I can’t wait to see what Liv Rancourt will do to twist the heart and make me crave more for a romance and suspenseful pirate/vampire tale!

The Vampire’s Pirate by Liv Rancourt is set in an entertaining alternative New Orleans, where paranormal creatures such as vampires and werewolves coexist in secret with humanity. As befits a novella with its relative brevity, there is one major plot in the story, other than the meeting of the main characters, Thomas the pirate and Dáire the vampire. The plot point can be summed up as evil vampire queen. Since I mostly read books where the vampires are good guys, it was fun meeting several unsavory vampires, both the would-be queen and some of her sycophants. We are given some insight into the main characters’ psyches by their first response to being in her clutches. It’s not a spoiler to note they chose opposite responses. One wants to run, the other needs to see the end of the so-called queen so she can’t harm anyone else. Her ending felt very apropos and gave us more insight into several characters’ motivations. While there were no plot points left unresolved, this novella serves as a good prologue to The Pirate’s Vampire. As the author acknowledges in a postscript having reverse titles can get confusing and they don’t intend to use them again. I received a free copy of this novella from the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is the second book I’ve read by Liv Rancourt. I have to say it was wonderfully written for how short it was. I’m giving it 4 stars. I received this ARC from GRR.
The book ’The Vampires Pirate,’ follows Dáire a vampire and Thomas a pirate. Dáire has found a new home in New Orleans with childe, Dorothea, and her partner Libbie. They wanted a fresh start in a new city. All of them want to live in peace, but that is not in the cards. They have been summoned by the “Queen” Mlle. Clarice Arsenualt. Once they arrive at her estate, they notice that something is not quite right the “Queen”.
Here is where Thomas enters the picture. The “Queen” has stolen from him, and he means to take his property back from her. So he accepts the “Queen”’s invitation. The book ’The Vampires Pirate,’ follows Dáire a vampire and Thomas a pirate. Dáire has found a new home in New Orleans with childe, Dorothea, and her partner Libbie. They wanted a fresh start in a new city. All of them want to live in peace, but that is not in the cards. They have been summoned by the “Queen” Mlle. Clarice Arsenualt. Once they arrive at her estate, they notice that something is not quite right the “Queen”.
Here is where Thomas enters the picture. The “Queen” has stolen from him, and he means to take his property back from her. So he accepts the “Queen”’s invitation. Okay, so I have to admit, that I love vampire stories, so of course I grabbed this one. I’ve read some books by Live Rancourt and enjoyed them, so I was sure this one would hit the spot too.
Sadly, this one is not as good as some of her other novels. Might be because this is a novella and super short and we don’t get enough time with the characters. This is somewhat of a clocked room mystery and as such an enjoyable read. The characters have to find an object of power to leave the mansion of a vampiress who wants to be queen of all vampires. (Of course there is more to this..)
The setting is very gothic (the house and the surroundings, and time period) and I enjoyed both main characters a lot. Dáire Malone a bit mor than Thomas. It has Interview with the vampire vibes, but with less angst. In exchange we get some sexy times, which I’m not mad about.
Will most likely try the second book in this series to see where it’s all going.

Great short story with supernaturals and pirates
This book was shorter than I expected it to be, but luckily the longer follow up is already out. Liv Rancourt has combined the supernatural with pirates in early New Orleans in this book. I enjoyed it even if it ended too soon for me because I am already invested in these characters. Vampire Daire meets pirate Thomas when they are in a bad situation, but it’s instant attraction between them and they sizzle even before they get any clothes off. The two men are great characters, but Ms Rancourt has dropped so many hints about situations and the other characters that I can’t wait to get out the next book to find out more. I really hope that we find out more about the side characters as well as the two males. I would especially love to know more about the black characters and how they got there and where they went.

Dáire Malone and his family have moved to New Orleans and hope to live with no problems. When a would-be queen commands his presence and then swears he will not leave until he gives a pledge of loyalty. Also appearing the same night in the same circumstances is a pirate or is a privateer. Thomas Clifton has also been summoned to give a pledge of loyalty. The queen has a source of power and Dáire is determined to find it before he can consider personal wants and desires.
This was an intriguing tale of power and its misuse. Thomas and Dáire were determined to defeat her and then act on their desire. The story had many elements to keep you reading, including danger and the unknown, love and desire. The biggest problem was that I wished it was longer. There was more to explore and there will be more books for us to enjoy.

Liv Rancourt's The Vampires Pirate, book one in The Immortal and Illicit Duology (#1) is only novella length, but the author packs quite a lot in these short pages.
Worldbuilding with character backstories-✅
Interesting MCs and secondaries-✅✅
A fast moving plot- ✅
The story alternates between Dáire and Thomas's POV. It's slow burn until the hot, steamy ending. The pair work so well together, solving the mystery, saving the world. Too bad the author only planned for a duology, I could see these characters having a long and engaging series.
Quick, fun. Sexy MCs, exchanging sizzling kisses. I can't wait for book two.

As a short work, this was entertaining. I would enjoy it as a longer work, with more time for the Vampire and Pirate to get to know one another, more time for their attraction to have more solid ground and reason, and more details given to how the paranormal world functions within the real world of the historical period. There were basically a lot of aspects to the story and world that could benefit from having more space and time to give depth, but this is set to be the first of a series, so it may be okay for it to be a first taste for now. I found Daire and Clifton, along with their respective companions, likeable and intriguing enough to read more about them, once book 2 is available. So mission accomplished for the author there.
On the critical side, I'm not sure how I feel about some of the characterization of the servants/slaves at the villain's estate; the verbiage and dialogue just felt just a little off to me, compared to other works I've read with black slaves involved. There were also evil magical henchmen servants of a sort that I would have liked to have seen more resolution or explanation, but again, this was a short work and these characters might not figure into the series later, so perhaps it was not entirely necessary to fully flesh that aspect out.

I’d already read and loved the vampire series written by Liv Rancourt and her co-author Irene Preston, so I knew I’d like this - and I wasn’t disappointed. An evil vampiress summons a vampire and a pirate (surprise!) to swear allegiance to her. Both have their own reasons for obeying the summons and of course they meet and fall for each other while trying to find and destroy the source of her power. I’d have liked a bit more backstory on the vampiress, but the result is a sparkly little romance with plenty of New Orleans atmosphere - and apparently there is a sequel.

It's a relatively short story, novella length, but an immense amount of fun. Rancourt has thrown in a few interesting twists on the vampire myth, with some interesting interactions with other paranormal beings, as well. Malone and Clifton are well depicted, as are the supporting characters, including their companions. There's a compelling world set up with these characters as this story sets up a sequel, as it ends with a HFN, not quite a HEA.
Definitely looking forward to the next one.

The Vampire's Pirate is the first book in The Immortal and Illicit Duology series. This is the story of Dáire a 200 year old vampire and Thomas a privateer(pirate). This was a short but good setup for the next book. I loved the characters and world building in this book. I loved the chemistry between the guys and watching them figure out what they were going to do. I can't wait for the next book in the series. I would definitely recommend this book.

Short and sweet story with instant attraction between a vampire and a pirate who finds themselves in precarious situation.
Dáire don't need Thomas when he shows up, perfectly happy with his life as caregiver for his vampire daughter and her life partner. But the want for him is difficult to get past, even in their dangerous circumstances.
The danger don't linger but the yearning do, and when they separate it's set up for their inevitable reunion.

This is the start of something great!
Pirates and vampires people. Need I say more? This was a quick but really good read. It’s clearly leading into something more which I’m excited about because I think this is going to be an awesome series. You are left on a bit of a what’s next vibe (which does chafe a bit for me but I acknowledge I’m a bit extreme in my need for a very rounded out conclusion haha) but it’s not a big cliffhanger by any means. The characters are fantastic, the world building is surprising detailed for such a short book and the story really grabs you. I can’t wait for what’s next!

Vampires, pirates and New Orleans. Say those three things together and I'm there. Malone and Clifton find themselves "chosen" by the vampire queen wanna-be to help her achieve her goals. Both of them recognize the danger of that desire being fulfilled but neither really wants to risk it all to eliminate her. Until they meet each other, that is. Their mutual attraction motivates them to become allies and work to defeat her. We'll need the second book for all the plots and counterplots to be resolved and I can't wait to return to this world to see how it all gets wrapped up.

It was just ok for me. I know there is another book after this one but I won't bother to read it, I just don't care about the MC's enough to go for another.
I received a free copy from Bookfunnel, and while I do appreciate authors making their books available for new readers to try them out, even if the second book was free I doubt if I would read it.

I'm kind of so so with vampire stories but just use the word pirate in the title and I'm reading it! This was full of power, strategy, fighting and lust, it was wonderful, if a wee bit confusing at times, for me anyway. This seems to be the first in a series, hopefully with these two men appearing again. A good read.

Dáire is a vampire Who is haunted by all of those he is murdered in the past.
Thomas is a “privateer” trying to get the Deed for his warehouse back from the “queen“ of Vieux Carré, Louisiana.
Overall, I enjoy the story very much. The attraction between Daire and Thomas is well written. Both are summoned for different reasons and realize they can only escape if they work together.
MC development: 7/10 (short story, so I expect more in the next book)
Heat: 4/10 (only one sex scene towards the end, but I didn’t expect more from a short story)
Length: 10/10 (it’s A short story so perfect for what it was)
Editing: 10/10 (I didn’t notice any mistakes or typos)
Meet cute: 9/10 (definitely a good way to force them together p)

This is a short story packed with sexual tension. There is a paranormal angle with werewolves and vampires, complimented by a crazy megalomaniac, romance and strong family bonds, set on a backdrop of historical New Orleans. While I enjoyed the fast pace and sexual tension, I was left with a lot of questions about character backgrounds, the world setting and a few plot points. It could use some more details and descriptions, but it was still an enjoyable short story.

I really enjoyed this book. The author dedication was for anyone who needed something fluffy and light and this is exactly what it was. It was a short little novella about a vampire and a pirate, but honestly it was exactly what I needed. It was very fast paced, considering it was so short, but I actually really enjoyed it. The little hints of lore and world building was actually really interesting for someone who loves vampires.
I am excited to see where the second book goes. It was nice and short and I am really excited for he next one

I enjoyed this story it is book one in a duology called the immortal and the illicit which is based on vampire Daire and pirate Thomas meeting and then how they help each other and the magnetic pull they have to each other. I’m looking forward to book to in this duology to see how their story ends.
