Hurrying along the dark, snow-covered path, she knows she’s not alone when she hears the light tread of someone behind her. Panic rising in her chest, she picks up the pace. But she doesn’t even have a chance to scream before everything goes black.

When a beautiful young woman is reported missing from her hotel room on the outskirts of Black Rock Falls, Sheriff Jenna Alton and her deputy David Kane are devastated to discover her pale, lifeless body trapped beneath a frozen lake nearby. It’s Jenna who finds the single pearl earring buried in the frosted grass that gives them their first lead.

Just as Jenna has the remaining hotel guests safely back in their rooms, the killer strikes again, and another victim is found in one of the hotel’s lakeside cabins. Next to his bloodied body is a second pearl earring. What does it mean, and why is the killer leaving them for Jenna to find?

Interviewing witnesses, Jenna discovers that both victims were seen arguing with other residents hours before their deaths. Could the murderer be out for revenge, and how many more bodies will follow before they are truly satisfied?

As a blizzard cuts the hotel off from Black Rock Falls, Jenna and her team are trapped with the killer. Then she receives a terrifying call from a teenage girl who thinks the murderer was in her room as she slept. Can Jenna save her from becoming the next victim? And how many more innocent lives will be taken before the snow thaws?

Well this was a wonderful locked room mystery that kept me reading all afternoon. Book 13 with these characters and I always feel at home with them. Once again it is a team effort to solve this case, with one member getting closer than they would like.

I loved the setting for Fallen Angel, a ski resort just outside town. Jenna and Dave are called to the hotel when a guest goes missing but it turns into a whole lot more that a missing woman. The resort is hosting a week long crime book festival with authors, agents, publishers and readers. And of course it is winter and they are snowed in by the blizzard conditions, making it hard to get in or out. There is a killer amongst them and the guests believe they are part of a game.. but it is a deadly game.

Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for my advanced copy of this book to read. Bring on book 14

4.5⭐

Fallen Angel is book thirteen in D.K. Hoods brilliantly thrilling Detectives Kane and Alton series and it shows no signs of slowing down even if this one did get off to a slow start for me. But with characters who feel like old friends, a killer who manages to keep on killing even though the team are on site there was plenty to enjoy and I loved the close proximity, the cat and mouse feel as the team desperately search for clues whilst contending with a crime book festival full of eager authors, agents and fans who think the murders are all part of an elaborate game.

And honestly, once I got into it, I was hooked and stayed up late into the night as I couldn't get enough and I had no clue who the killer was in fact I had this whole crazy yet plausible theory worked out, but I was no where near right and that is what makes this series so great, and why it's quickly become a big favourite of mine.

Would happily recommend.

My thanks to D.K. Hood, Bookoutre and Netgalley. I'll admit that I wasn't near as impressed as others. This is book 13 of the series. It actually read as if it was the first. Which truly boggled the mind. Kane and Alton acted like teenagers. The murders weren't near as fascinating as the author wanted us to believe, nor was the "genius" resolution. It was all incredibly mundane. Worst of all? The fact that I figured out the killer, just because of the name. Also, a lot of heavy breathing and sweating! I can't recommend this sorry excuse for a book to anyone. I'm glad that others liked it. I thought it was awful!

Thanks to netgalley, D.K Hood and Bookouture for the ARC of Fallen Angel in exchange for my fair and honest options.
This is book 13 in the series I highly recommend reading the first 12 before diving into this one.

A body is found in the frozen lake at the sky Lodge during a crime writers convention. Jenna and her team head up with so many guests there and the snow falling heavily Jenna Kane Zac and Emma decide to stay whilst the remaining team head back to town. With so many people and a murderer to catch will they catch them before another person is found dead.

I frigging love this entire series, I stumbled across it last month and was so excited when I realised this one was avaliable, this had easily become my favourite American crime series .

As usual we have Jenna and Kane with their underlying relationship as a clear theme throughout the book. It's their secret hut its the worse kept secret in town. Further more they aren't really together which I found very confusing considering the fact they are planning a future together. Bit anyway I enjoyed this part of the novel. I'm just on edge because I'm so routing for their happily ever after. But only time will tell.

This case was an interesting one and I love how Hood always gives his killers a voice, this has become even more so in this series with the added bonus of Jo the friendly local FBI behavioural analyst who helps profile with Dave. I liked this killer he was so insane it made it an enjoyable read I found myself wanting to know the why, for once I couldn't guess the who. But I love it when I can't as so rare.

I found with the srtioudness of the crimes the added humour throughout the book killed me. There's a moment between Dave and Zac I could see what was going to happen before it did and I was in hysterics. Rollie as always adds humour, with Sandy ofcourse going into labour during the snow storm there were so moments to funny I had to stop reading for a second. So don't worry with all the gruesome you will still laugh the main in these stories are so funny aswell as over protective.

The prose was beautifully done, I felt I was there I could see the descriptions I was reading and I could picture the scenes as they played out. This is a skill Hood has she is are able to write so well and change the tone depending on the characters. It's truly great , I have literally read all in this series for the last 2 months i truly will be sad without Jenna and and Dave go from my next books.

So ofcourse I would recommend this book was great and its just so apt for fellow crime loving readers, that said if you loved Wendy Dranfield, Lisa Regan or Stacey Green this series is for you. If you've read books 1 to 12 Well you're already sold easy 5 stars roll on book number 14!!!

Fallen Angel by D.K. Hood is the 13th in the Detectives Kane and Alton series.

First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Series Background:   (Warning – May contain spoilers from previous books)
Former DEA, Jenna Alton is now the Sheriff in Black Rock Falls, Montana.  Her past is a secret.  Deputy David Kane's background is also a secret.  He was a Special Forces sharpshooter, and a bodyguard to the President.  Then there is Forensic Scientist Shane Wolfe, who is not only a Medical Examiner with amazing computer skills, he used to be Kane’s handler. So, with a few other deputies, Jenna has a good team to handle crime in the small Black Rock Falls town, which seems to have more murders than a small town should.

My Synopsis:   (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)
Jenna and the team have been called to Glacial Heights Ski Resort on the outskirts of town. There is a crime-book convention going on, and the resort is booked for two weeks with authors, publishers, and readers.  One of the literary agents has been reported missing,  and they find her body trapped beneath the frozen lake.

The team decides to keep the murder quiet, and soon the crime-book enthusiasts start talking about the missing woman as a game.  They think that it is actually a crime mystery set up by the organizers.  So the guests are not taking this quite as seriously as the police, or perhaps as seriously as they should.  Soon there is another murder.

With over 200 potential murderers, narrowing the suspects down is quite the chore.  At least with the roads closed due to blizzard conditions,  nobody can leave.  Unfortunately, that also means they have a murderer on the loose.

Meanwhile, the relationship between Jenna and Dave has improved, and they are now living together, but this case may prove to be too much.

My Opinions:
There are so many things I dislike about this series.  The female Sheriff usually playing second fiddle to her male second in command.  The FBI always being called in because they can't handle the job.  (I've been complaining about those two things in most of my reviews of past books, and was happy to see Jenna finally voice those same views in her fight with Kane).  Moving on....Carter and Wolfe's daughter Emily..... I don't particularly like either of them although Emily really annoyed me in this one -- she's a little over-bearing and full of herself.

As well, sometimes the writing leaves a lot to be desired.  For example, Wolfe calls Julie a magnet for killers, and in the next chapter the killer calls her a magnet as well.  It's just a bit much.

So, all these complaints, and yet I am still reading this series.   Why?  Because the plots can't be beat.  This one in particular was great!  Although I had a good idea as to the identity of the killer,  the process and techniques the author used to get the reader to the conclusion were very well done.  There were enough red herrings, and side stories to keep me interested.

Again, all my grievances seem to fly out the window, because it ended up being another fast and entertaining read.  And....I will continue to read this series.

Detectives Kane & Alton #13

Hurrying along the son-covered path, she knows she's not alone when she hears the light tread of someone behind her. Panic rising in her chest, she picks up the pace. But she doesn't even have the chance to scream before everything goes black.

When a beautiful young woman is reported missing from her hotel room on the outskirts of Black Rock Falls, Sheriff Jenna Alton and her deputy David Kane are devastated to discover her pale lifeless body trapped beneath the frozen lake nearby. It's Jenna who finds a single pearl earring buried in the frosted grass that gives them their first lead.

Sheriff Jenna Alton and David Kane have been called to a hotel on the outskirts of Black Rock Falls where a crime writers convention is being held. A body has been found frozen in the lake. Then another person is murdered and everyone at the convention becomes a suspect. A huge blizzard only makes finding evidence and the culprit harder for Jenna and her team.

I've always been drawn quickly into every book in this fantastic series straight away. It's a tense and engaging read. We get snippets every now and then from the killer, but they don't give much away. Will Kane and Alton prevent anymore murders happening? You'll need to read this well written and thought out book to find out.

I would like to thank #NetGalley #bookouture and the author #DKHood for my ARC of #FallenAngel in exchange for an honest review.

Oooh I love this deliciously dark isolating tale! This is the first time I have thought, oh you can read this as a standalone but then, I stopped myself! No no no no, too much has happened and more is happening! So read the series!

I loved the isolation of this book, being in a ski resort, the cold and the darkness surrounding you amplifies the terror and fear so well in this book. I mean I LOVE skiing but I don’t think I could stay somewhere like here! Add on the chapters from the killer and their calculating thoughts and inner amusements, all adding to the horrors we find with each page turned!

However, don’t get me wrong I do wish this fictional town was real so I could go and visit. Despite the location of the new cake shop, I want to visit it! It sounded lush. The town always sounds so quaint and I really want to go to Aunt Betty’s!!!

Outside the murders and the isolation, so much is going on with the team – I can’t say too much because well spoiler! However, we do wonder whether things will be the same. I have to say, I do feel sorry for the team because they definitely get put through the wringer!

All I can say is I loved this instalment and I just think we have no signs of slowing down….well I hope not! A world without Dave and Jenna just doesn’t bear thinking about!

D.K. Hood has effectively built this series with all the elements needed for a strong thriller collection. Elaborating on many of the story arcs presented in the previous dozen novels, Hood provides the reader with something strong and. well-plotted. The series has come so far and yet still has a ways to go. When a crime writers’ convention come to Black Rock Falls, the town is excited. Sheriff Jenna Alton and her senior deputy, Dave Kane, are eager to have so many new faces around town, particularly the author who has been spinning tales about murder in their Montana community. When a literary agent turns up dead, Alton and Kane are alerted to troubles and can only hope they will choke off the spree before it gets too intense. Hood weaves quite the story here with her lucky thirteenth novel in this collection.

As she watches the scenery around her, she must hurry, as things are getting dark. When the sound of footfalls behind her break her concentration, the intensity increases. Worried for her safety, she picks up the pace, but is soon overtaken and before she can alert anyone else, her surroundings fade.

Black Rock Falls is home to a crime writers’ convention, using the newly built ski lodge and hotel as its setting. Faces from across the industry appear, ready to sell their ideas to authors or present new twists on long-developed ideas. However, there is not only a sense of joy when a young literary agent disappears from the hotel and is soon found dead. Her body, pale and lodged under the ice, tells a story of something sinister and macabre. This was no accident, though Sheriff Jenna Alton will have to investigate to find out just what happened.

Working with her senior deputy, Dave Kane, they find an earring, which might prove to be a clue worth building upon. Trying to keep the guests calm and in their rooms, many speculate that this is all part of the conference, a murder mystery to solve. When a second body is discovered in one of the chalets, Alton and Kane know that there is something nefarious going on. They try to contain it before things get too out of hand, discovering a second earring. Could this be a clue to identifying the killer?

While interviewing guests, Alton and Kane try to discover a motive or a possible suspect, particularly when they hear that arguments had taken place not long before either victim was found. When a flash blizzard descends on the Montana community, both Alton and Kane realise that they are in close confines to the killer. A distressing call and another piece of evidence turns the hunt for a killer into a race for safety, with many more possible victims who could be targeted in the blink of an eye. Can the killer be caught before things turn serial? Hood develops this stunning addition to the series and keeps the reader on their toes.

D.K. Hood has not stopped perfecting her serial killer series, based in the small community of Black Rock Falls, Montana. There seems to be little Hood has not done or is willing to do. Working with a strong narrative base, Hood finds ways to keep the reader on their toes and provide a crescendo in the action until things climax with a final reveal. This series relies on great narrative development and utilising strong ideas to propel things forward. Thirteen books and counting proves that something must be going well.

Character development is another essential element for keeping the series fresh. With a core collection of characters who work well together, Hood has been able to develop strong advancement throughout. This keeps the reader intrigued with how things are going. While Kane and Alton both have pasts veiled in secrecy, they are coming out of their shells and appear to be connecting with one another on a more personal level. This is something series fans have been hoping for and they can now see it coming to fruition, though there are many other storylines that flourish with this momentum.

The series relies on unpredictable factors and strong plot points. Hood has been able to pace them effectively, without releasing too much in any one book. The stories flow well and appear to have a strong sense of development, building on one another without being too intertwined, so as to leave the reader lost if this miss something. I will always encourage readers to begin at the start of a series, though there are portions of each book that could allow for standalone reading. That said, who would want to miss out from all the building action? Hood has so much more to say, including another novella reading to read next. I cannot wait to see how things will fit together.

Kudos, Madam Hood, for perfecting the art of thriller writing!

I've read two other books in this series - this is the 13th - and enjoyed them. The main characters, Sheriff Jenna Alton and her professional and personal partner, David Kane, are likable, skilled people with intriguing, secretive backgrounds who are, well, fun to read about. So naturally, I was looking forward to diving into this one. But for several reasons, this one doesn't quite measure up.

On the plus side, the story itself held my interest from beginning to end. The setting is an expansive mountaintop resort in the middle of winter, at which a convention of current and would-be writers, agents and publishers is happening. Alton and Kane are here to follow up on a gone-missing report of one of the most successful agents; they hang around after her dead, frozen body is found in a pond near her chalet. Also onsite is another familiar character, Medical Examiner Shane Wolfe, who is accompanied by his two grown daughters Emily and Julie - both of whom play major roles this time out.

As they and other members of their team work toward narrowing down suspects - not an easy task given the well-known nastiness of the dead woman - another victim turns up in an under-construction chalet, together with a clue that ties the two murders together. Given that blizzard conditions prevent all but emergency comings and goings, it becomes clear that the murderer is in their midst; and when yet another body gets zapped, they realize they're dealing with a serial killer.

Everyone, including Wolfe's daughters, get their heads together to speculate on the killer's motive in hopes of preventing yet another ugly incident. As a team, they all work well together - even honoring professional responsibilities during a spat between two lovers that would make a junior high student cringe - but the killer's identity remains elusive. As an aside, though, I had to wonder why on earth Kane is sometimes called "Uncle Dave" and other times "Uncle Kane" by the girls - like, who calls an uncle by his last name)? But hey, maybe that was explained in a previous book.

In between "regular" chapters, readers get the musings from the clearly deranged killer himself (or herself - the investigative team realizes that the methods of death could be accomplished by either sex). It is here, too, that readers learn the killer has set sights not only on a select list of victims, but on a team member as well. Can the good guys and gals figure out who the culprit is before the unthinkable happens and one of their own goes down for the count?

As this exciting race to the finish plays out, it's clear that pains are being taken to keep readers guessing whether the killer is male or female. That process, sorry to say, triggered one of my grammar hot buttons: Pairing a plural pronoun with a singular antecedent. An example (my words): "I saw someone get off the elevator, but I didn't recognize 'them'." No, no, a thousand times NO (which has to be close to the number of times it happens in the book, which is why I'm compelled to mention it; once or twice I could overlook). That took a big bite out of my enjoyment of this book, although I still recommend it to others because it's a well-thought-out, interesting story. Thanks to the publisher, via NetGalley, for allowing me to read and review a pre-release copy.

I've come a long way with the Kane & Alton series. With time I've only come to love the characters in the book & in the series. Something about this series just clicks with me & I can never put down any of the books. Fallen Angel was a good addition to the series & the plot was compelling & very twisty. There was a lot happening in this book - murder wise & it felt as though the body counts were just increasing with every page turn. The impossible scenario that the team was placed in added to the tension almost like a closed room murder. The only reason this is a 4 star & not a 5 star book like all the others I've read is because of the target placed on a certain characters' back for a second time. That felt a bit statistically impossible so unrealistic in my eyes. But I enjoyed the plot a lot & can't wait to see what Dave & Jenna find themselves against in the next book.
Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture & D. K. Hood for an arc!

Wow this series just keeps on being absolutely great
For every new title I just can't wait!
This one is enthralling and intriguing, too,
Kept me turning the pages, all the way through.

A convention for crime authors is the setting this time
With someone out to commit more than one deadly crime.
With blizzards trapping folk in the mountain retreat
The serial killer has their victims there trapped so neat.

With crime authors a plenty, the killer has lots
Of methods to test and use from their plots.
Can Alton and Kane catch this elusive serial killer
Set in this place that's a real chiller?

In this series I really enjoy the townsfolk and place
Their relationships and the action packed pace.
There are family dramas and relationships, too
Even a different birth place for two!

The lives, relationship and romance
Entwined with the detective work all work to enhance,
My enjoyment of this read that's a definite chiller
A brilliant, enthralling murder mystery thriller.

I can't recommend this book and series highly enough so
I hope you'll also soon give it a go.
For my complementary copy of this book, I say thank you,
I throughly enjoyed reading it and this is my honest review.

I love this series and it just keeps getting stronger.
Again there is a serial killer, at the snow resort where a crime book festival is being held. I felt the author was drifting into real life and challenging the difficulties of being a published author! I enjoyed the insights into the publishing industry, while the weather was cold and icy. There were Agatha Christie undertones. Being trapped in a ski resort with the killer. But I was happy Jenna and Dave were there too.
A ripping read and as usual I look forward to the next book!

Thanks to Netgalley, Bookouture and D.K. Hood for allowing me to read this Arc.
D.K. Hood is one of my top three favourite authors. Her books always guarantee a delicious, spine thrilling read.
Fallen Angel is equally as brilliant as all the other books in the series. Stuck in a ski resort during a snow storm and ironically a writers convention Jenna, Dave and the team are caught up in a spate of murders! Author agents are being brutally murdered! But joining Jenna's team are Wolfes (the medical examiner's) two daughters. One of them is in serious danger! Also there's something wrong between Jenna and Kane. What is going on??

Book 13… For some this number makes them want to spend the whole day in bed, locked up. For others this means a brand new story by this amazingly good author.

I think this has become one of my favourite police teams. I have a bit of a soft spot for Dave… and for Shane… and for Zac… and for Jake… 😊 and I would not mind having Jenna, Julie and Emily as BFF’s.

Let’s see what’s so great about this book:

A deranged killer: check
A basket full of suspects: check
A thrilling story: check
A chilling plot: check
A bit of romance: check
Jenna and her team not only had to battle against a very cold killer, but the weather was not on their side either. Sometimes the atmosphere was not only ice cold outside, but freezing inside as well.

It was another nail biting book where I disliked one of the suspect straight from the start. Was that person indeed the killer or were my feelings way of the radar as usual…

I felt the cold seep out of the book, but the suspense kept me nice and warm. 5 stars

Thank you, D.K. Hood and Bookouture

This one didn't engage me as much the others in the series. Unfortunately I kept putting it down. I even read a couple other books before resuming again.

The writing is excellent and the murders interesting, but there are now so many recurring secondary characters in this series, it's difficult to wrap my head around them sometimes. Add in heaps of murder suspects, towns folk, potential witnesses, red herrings and you have a huge pot to stir.

While I enjoy this genre without any romance between characters, I'm also a 99% romance reader. I usually love intense romance woven through suspense, crime and thriller novels. It brings in another dimension to the reading experience.

The slow burn 'so called' romance, between Dave and Jenna throughout this series, is extremely lacklustre. There is zero romantic chemistry and their fight just seemed out of place. Especially as their romance has been 100% behind closed doors and we have no clue how 'close' they actually are. One minute they were fighting about their future, and the next they were professional police partners again. Left me shrugging, not caring, and wishing no romance had ever been referred to.

In my opinion, the MCs should have stayed as professional friends. Would have made much more sense to me. Anyway, hopefully I'll enjoy book 14 more. 3.5 stars.

(4.5) DK Hood you have absolutely ruined book signings for me, lol. Now I will be wondering whats going on between agents, authors, publishers. In all seriousness I think we saw a little of what all our authors have to go through, and it makes my heart hurt. Than when I saw that first look at Julie, I was yelling no, no, no. This was a book of twists, straight to my heart, with the book signings, Julie and then Kane and Jenna. The murders, yes people, more than one, rain the gambit from common to uncommon with different levels of destruction. I am not a fan of "locked room" mysteries, or in this case, murder :) Because its my least famous premise I had to keep narrowing my focus to prevent that. Thank you for the arc Bookouture, you are one of my favorite publishers bringing such a multitude of fantastic authors and I grateful for the day I stumbled across DK Hood, book 1 on an audio book, and I have been hooked ever since. As one fan said, bring on #14.

Thank you to #NetGalley, #Bookcouture and the author, #D.K. Hood for the opportunity to read "Fallen Angel" in return for a fair and honest review.

Well, here we are - it's book 13 in the series, but really only the 12th Kane and Alton book, as Book 12 was the Dave Kane origin story. But nonetheless, it's back to the business of serial killers in Black Rock Falls:
“It’s a friendly town, apart from the serial killers. Do you have any suspects yet?"

When Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane are called to the Glacial Heights Ski Resort in response to a report of a body trapped under the ice of a pool, and thus begins the latest in the ongoing serial killer sagas in Black Rock Falls.

This time, the victims are all from a Book Convention - authors, publishers, agents and readers. Included in the group is an author who has written a series of books about the killings in Black Rock Falls (sound familiar, folks?), and Jenna wants to get her copies autographed.

It quickly becomes apparent that "Miss Storm", the woman frozen in the pool, was the victim of a homicide, and the Sheriff and her crew, including the Wolfes, Zac Rio and Dave Kane begin their investigation in the midst of multiple snow events, which leave them all but stranded at the Resort with a killer; one that has a member of their crew in his or her sights!

This particular killer seems to be matching his modus operandi to books which the victims were involved.

As always in this series Dave, Jenna, Shane, Zac and everyone else work tirelessly to bring the killer to justice, but internal tensions make it even more stressful.

With the help of Ty Carter and Jo Wells, FBI agents who are brought in due to their expertise in psychopaths, the perpetrator is eventually brought into the light, but not before some truly harrowing scenes of murder and mayhem. [“There’s a head in the kitchen freezer.”]

Along the way, the relationship between Dave and Jenna seems to splinter and we're left wondering if they can mend the breaks (don't worry, you'll find out before the end).

Highly recommended, but you really should read the other books in the series to truly get a feel for the characters and settings.

Number 13 in the Kane and Alton series but nothing unlucky about this, it is still as brilliant a read as all the others in the series.
I love the setting, so clever! A book about yet more murders in Blackrock Falls set at a book convention in Blackrock falls which includes a signing of books about the previous serial murders in Blackrock Falls!
Intriguing to get a glimpse of the publishing industry and such an original idea to base the murders in this world. All the action is set in the ski resort where the book convention is taking place and everyone is virtually trapped there because of the weather, so that adds great claustrophobia and tension.
We get close to the villain from the start as he stalks not just his victims but one of the teams family as well. But who is he or she and who will be next?
In addition to this exciting main plot the subplots are again developed beautifully with some domestic concerns threatening everything that we’ve come to love.

Another brilliant book in one of my favourite series.
Jenna and Dave are called out to a hotel complex outside Black Rock Falls as a woman is missing and a shoe has been discovered.
Her body is soon found in the lake and the team descend on the hotel.
The weather decides to create havoc and soon Jenna, Dave and some of the team are stranded at the hotel.
The body count starts to rise and they realise they are trapped there with a killer.
With the killer holding one of them in their sights, the team pull out all the stops to protect each other.
This is an action packed crime thriller that definitely had me on the edge of my seat at times.
A fantastic addition to the series.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

I am a big fan of this series of books with Detectives Kane and Alton. I loved the setting of this book, the ski resort outside of town, it worked very well for a crime writers festival. I struggled with this book in the series, perhaps it was a bit rushed out, I don't know but it was not my favourite. It failed to grip me like the previous ones and I figured out the killer early on. I would still recommend the series, however, just not this episode. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.

A frozen body under ice….what happened?
Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane are about to investigate this mysterious incident. The crime occurred at a hotel where a convention is going on.. Coincidentally there is a crime writers convention going on. But, is it a coincidence? Everyone is a suspect as the investigation commences.
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest opinion. All opinions expressed are my own

Fallen Angel by D.K. Hood is another exciting read for me in the Detectives Kane and Alton series. Once again Black Rock Falls is the scene of a psychopath on a murder spree. This time the local ski resort, Glacier Heights is where the murders occur. Glacier Heights is playing host to a two-week long crime book convention. A series of blizzards block everyone in at the ski resort. I really like author D.K. Hood's writing style. I enjoyed following along with the team's investigation of the murders. I was surprised at Medical Examiner Shame Wolfe's daughter Julie's "too stupid to live" scenes though. The best parts of this story are the birth of the twins and the ending.

I received an ARC and this is my honest review.

I love this Author’s writing. I love this series. This book is phenomenal. The setting (a conference at a ski lodge) has many suspects for who is killing people. There were many times I was on the edge of my seat holding my breath. I sure wish the Author could write much faster. Waiting patiently for the next instalment. Thanks to NetGalley, Bookoutre and the Author for allowing me to read and review this book.

A Mystery Author Convention at the Ski Lodge and before heading into work Jenna and Dave head over to get some of Jenna’s books signed, but they never make it back down the mountain as a report of a missing person turns out to be murder, and then blizzards hit. With limited team access and bodies are starting to pile up the race is on stopping the killer. And to make things difficult the attendees think it is a mystery game ….
Another great instalment in the Kane and Alton series – looking forward to next one.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for an early read of this great book!

This is book #13 of the Kane and Alton series, and whilst it is part of a series it can easily be read as a standalone book. This is the 13th book of the series, and 13 is certainly unlucky for Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane when they find themselves in the middle of another serial killer murder case. Investigating a missing woman at a crime writers convention, Alton and Kane are cut off when a blizzard hits the area. The bodies then begin to pile up and the storyline takes us on a rollercoaster of thrills, tension and suspense in a bid to find the killer.

I love this series of books and will happily put other books aside to get a new one of these read first! It’s great to be back in Black Rock Falls, and as usual it’s not only the weather which is chilling as there’s another serial killer on the block. I loved the scenario of a crime writer convention and assumed the author wrote a lot of that from personal experience! The book began straight into the action, and we are brought straight into the killer’s storyline with chapters from their perspective. Of course, you don’t get to find out who’s behind the killers until way into the story, and try as I might I couldn’t work it out for myself!

This book is literally filled with heart-stopping and stomach-churning moments and I found myself moving closer and closer to the edge of my seat as I read. I love the main characters from this series, and they all worked well together again. Of course, Kane and Alton stole the show yet again with their determined detective work, but I shall keep my mouth firmly closed as to what is going on in their personal lives! With a fast paced and high action plot, this book kept me glued to the pages throughout with the good guys doing what they do best and the bad guys being bad! As always it was exciting to read and I can’t wait for the next book in the series!

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'Fallen Angel' by DK Hood.

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for DK Hood, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous

Publication date 23rd November 2021.

This is the second book I have read by this author. It is also the thirteenth book in the 'Detective Kane and Alton' series but can be read as a standalone. I have previously read 'Cross My Heart' (book twelve in the series) which I highly recommend.

I was originally drawn to this book by its beautiful eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that 'Fans of Lisa Regan, Melinda Leigh and Kendra Elliot will love this gripping and addictive thriller from USA Today bestselling author D.K. Hood.' I am a huge fan of all three of those authors so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I am also a huge fan of DK Hood and if this is half as good as 'Cross My Heart' it is sure to be a page turning read. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of a prologue, 59 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is set in Montana, USA 🇺🇸.

This book is written in third person perspective and the main protagonists are Sheriff Jenna Alton and Detective David Kane. The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.

OMG!!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVED THIS BOOK!!! D.K HOOD you just keep getting better and better!!!

This book is fantastically written and had me hooked from the first page until the last. DK Hood way of writing is perfectly evocative and she has such a creative imagination!! The descriptions were so vivid and realistic I felt myself feeling the cold and reaching for a blanket to warm me up. This has got to be one of the best storyline I have ever read!!!! Murders at a crime book convention and not only that but murders based...... Argh, no I won't say anymore as I don't want to say too much to spoil it for the reader. Needless to say I absolutely LOVED the storyline. This book is absolutely perfect for any crime lovers as you are literally reading about crime authors, crime books, crime and murder!!! It just does not get better than that!!! I absolutely LOVE books filled with books and this just nailed it on the head. I loved that the killer complains about books that have not been written from a Killers perspective!!! Just seriously, I cannot say how brilliant all the book talk was!!! The storyline is packed with tension, suspense, books, authors, publishers, murder, tension and filled with twists and turns. I was absolutely shocked when everything was revealed and was not expecting it at all!!! A HUGE congratulations to D.K Hood, it is getting harder and harder to shock me but you did it well!!! I also enjoyed the fact that everything was explained at the end as I hate loose ends and when something is mentioned or happens in a book and then is forgotten about. D.K Hood has obviously done her research on police procedurals which is yet another bonus as I've read many crime novels where the authors make massive mistakes due to not doing enough research. This is an absolutely unputdownable page turner and I cannot wait to read the previous and future books in what is promising to be an addictive series.

Although this is the thirteenth book in the series I had absolutely no problems reading it without the others. Any details or events that have previously happened are mentioned in just the right amount of detail to let a new reader know what has happened and yet not too much to bore a previous reader.

I absolutely LOVED meeting the characters again and they are all realistic and I became completely invested in them. I love that Jenna is such a strong female lead that has history and has been through so much but doesn't cower and stands strong. I enjoyed watching her relationship with Kane and I am looking forward to going back to how they met and moving forward to see where it goes. Kane is another fantastic character that I became invested in and I adore how protective of Jenna he is. The team dynamics worked well and I also enjoyed getting to know more about Rio, Wolfe and Rowley and I look forward to meeting them all again. I also enjoyed getting to "meet" and see more of Julie and Emily in this book. I must say my favourite had to be Duke though!!!! What an absolutely fantastic addition, I just love it when pets play such large parts in books.

Congratulations D.K Hood on what promises to be a huge success!!! Very rarely an authors books get better but you have certainly mastered it!!! I cannot wait to get stuck into more of your books and I would like to welcome you to my favourite crime author list!!!

This book is definitely in my top 10 and considering I've read 1000's this is a HUGE achievement!!!

Overall an absolutely addictive, heart racing and unputdownable crime thriller that will keep you up all night.

Genres covered in this novel include Police Procedural, Suspense, Mystery, Thriller, Noir Fiction and Crime Fiction amongst others.

I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of Lisa Regan, Melinda Leigh, Angela Marsons, Carol Wyer, Kendra Elliot and anyone looking for a gripping page turner .

346 pages.

This book is just £2.99 to purchase on kindle via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!

Rated /5 (I LOVED it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.

I received this ARC from Netgalley in return for an honest review.

***Minor Spoilers***

Please do not read unless you are prepared for the plot to be spoiled.

Fallen Angel is the 14th book in the Kane and Alston series.  In this outing, a literary agent is murdered at a convention being held at a swanky ski resort in Black Falls, Montana.  Kane and Alton are called to investigate who could have wanted the agent dead.  Soon, other bodies begin showing up, murdered in the style of the murders used in the victim's books. Trapped at the resort by a blizzard, Jenna and Dave must catch a serial killer before he strikes at one of their own.

This is not my favorite book in the series. Setting the plot of the book at a literary convention is a great idea.  It was fun to learn "inside" facts of the publishing world and process. I like the semi-locked door mystery aspect of the book. It was an interesting complication for the characters: being stuck with each other and a killer in one location.  But, the romance between Dave and Jenna became a distraction and overshadowed the mystery.  I have to admit that I did not like how these two characters resolved their relationship issues. Dave is doing his usual, "I can't committ to you because I get everyone I love killed" thing. While Jenna, tired of waiting for a commitment after three years, calls Dave out on his bs (and rightfully so). She tells him that she is tired of waiting and wants to get married and have a baby. Dave takes this to mean that Jenna wants to break up and date other men.  Yeah. I'm not sure how that conclusion was drawn, but I went with it. OK. Now what? The resolution to this is insulting to Jenna's character.  Hood makes Jenna solely responsible for fixing her relationship with Dave. He can't even be bothered to sit down and discuss the issue with her. Instead, he pouts like a child being denied candy. And the truly annoying part of this subplot is that every other character in the book telling Jenna that she is going to have to "make this right" with Dave because he will never make the first move. So she does. Yeah. This is disappointing. Hood just published a novella where Dave makes peace with his past (Breathe For Me) and feels ready to move on with his life. Having Dave be commitment phobic once again felt like their relationship went back to step 1. I was kind of hoping that their breakup would continue so that Dave and Jenna could get some real clarity on what they want and if they are willing to compromise to be together. Instead, Hood took the easy way out and had Jenna apologize for being needy and standing up for herself. Once she does that, Dave is all about being with Jenna. Meh.

Even though I love this series, I overall was not a fan of this installment. It's a good book, but the relationship between Dave and Jenna overshadow the murder mystery.

Every year I select one or two authors and read a number of their standalone literary novels or an entire series from a mystery / suspense / thriller author. This year I read DK Hood’s suspense thrillers. I’m commenting on them as a group but if something is notable in an individual novel I will comment specifically on that.

All of Hood’s novels are well-written for their genre. The main characters (Kane and Alton) as well as characters who appear in many of the books, are developed well and the readers continue to learn more about them, their strengths and flaws, as we read through the series. With each new novel some additional characters appear. Some of these may turn up in future novels, but most only appear in that one book in the series. All of the titles are page-turners so it is easy to read them quickly.

The physical area that Kane and Alton handle, as law enforcement detectives, is reasonably large, includes a lot of sparsely populated land as well as a reasonably isolated mountainous area which contains hiking trails, caves and rough campsites. For me, this required some suspension of disbelief as there are always new characters who appear in each novel, some in plain sight, others who try to stay under the radar. For such a sparsely populated area, there are a lot of murders and other nefarious activities. If there wasn’t, of course, there would be nothing for Hood to write about.

The one thing that irks me about the novels in this series are the number of times that Sherrif Jenna Alton has been the target of the new, non law-abiding characters in these novels.

Should you read the novels in this series? Yes, if you like to follow the same characters, in page-turner novels that have creative, sometimes unbelievable, plots.

Do you have to read them in series order? Not necessarily. The novels, for the most part stand alone but as the main characters develop throughout the series, and some new secondary characters are added, it would help to follow the titles chronologically.

However, if the plot summaries of some titles appeal to you more than others then start with that novel. The plots and characters are far less complicated to follow than something like Game of Thrones, so the novels would be much easier to read out of order.
