The third book in the Lawmen series by Cheyenne McCray. Christie Simpson is coming back secretly to Arizona to see her friends, Belle and Dylan, have their baby. But her ex-husband, Salvatore Reyes has ways of finding out things and he is determined she dies so he calls a hit out on her from jail. Trace is given a heads up and makes it to the airport in time to intercept the baddies but not before shots are fired and Christie takes a hit. Time for bodyguard/protector mode to set in and Trace does all he can to keep her safe.

A spicy little treat that continues the story from No Mercy. This book is only a novella but if you read the books in order (and I recommend you do) then you'll get the backstory.

Taking Fire (Lawmen/Deadly Intent #3) by Cheyenne McCray
4.5 Stars
M/F Thriller
Triggers: Attempted murder, murder
I was given this book for an honest review by Wicked Reads.

This was a fast paced, on the run type story. Christie wants to live her life - nobody telling her what to do, how to be - she wants her independence. When she finds herself in a sticky situation, she not only has to think fast, but she has to accept Trace's help.

Despite the FBI's attempts, they are having a very difficult time keeping Christie from harm. Her ex-husband is supposed to go to trial soon and he is set on getting away - Christie is the one witness that can truly harm his case.

With bullets flying, running for their lives and trying to stay a step ahead of the assassins, Trace and Christie have their work cut out. They do find some time to develop a relationship, but their chemistry was far better while running than romantically.

Everyone is pulling all the stops out - FBI, Trace and the CoS friends in order to keep Christie safe, but Salvatore is also pulling all the stops out - he wants to take Christie out.

I enjoyed this story a lot and felt that it was more of a thriller than a romance, but overall, really liked it.

Um...no. This one gets a big ol’ no from me. The main characters had absolutely no chemistry whatsoever, the story was lacking to say the least, and everything just dragged. I just don’t understand why the main characters supposedly liked one another. I haven’t read the previous books but apparently they got along ig? It’s all very dumb and I’m not happy. Starting the year with a 2 is upsetting.

OH YEAH, ALSO, just remembered but 1. Marriage at the end ugh 2. This girlies trauma was dealt with in a very dumb and unbelievable way 3. Part of Christie’s character was that she was sterile and how sad that is, but she’s miraculously pregnant by the end of the book which just bothers me. It’s okay for her to be sterile and sad, she can still be happy w her life (adoption and whatnot), I don’t like that it was just magically “fixed”

The couple: Trace and Christie

Romance trope: romantic suspense
Series: Deadly Intent
Length: 261 pages

Plot: Trace met Christie in the process of an investigation. She's now semi-in-hiding, getting ready to testify against her murderer ex-husband. But the ex is determined to kill her, and if he doesn't succeed, the cartel might. Trace wants a chance to get to know her better, now that she's free, but first, he'll have to protect her from unimaginable danger.

Commentary: I have to wonder at what point does Christie's arm/shoulder become completely unusable. Because she got in some sort of accident/shooting/fight at least once a day, and the same shoulder is hurt because of it each time. Surely she has no use of that arm anymore! I also can't believe that her concussion didn't take her out, because after so many times of hitting her head - is it even possible to keep going? At any rate, Trace was luckier than most everyone else around him, with only minor (relatively) injuries. He was relentless, and I always like that in a romantic suspense hero.

Previous book in the series: No Mercy
Next book in the series: Point Blank

Christie is definitely TSTL. I almost stopped reading at chapter 3. Trace was the saving grace. Very unrealistic story. I did like Angel though. He popped up everywhere. Christie was a very selfish woman. I mean choosing to refuse FBI protection for herself was one thing, but risking her friends and their newborn baby was another. Her naivety is what got her into this mess. And yet, throughout the entire ordeal she continued to try and control her protection detail, getting many killed. Really didn’t care for her. The ending was sweet. My first time reading this author. May try again.

"Taking Fire" was a thrilling read. I'm still out of breath after reading it! The fascinating fast-paced easy-to-read page-turning plot was filled with intrigue, suspense, and romance. Moreover, the protagonists, Trace and Christie (although she was a stupidly flawed character), gushed with chemistry. And, Dallas was truly a treasure! Additionally, the author's use of figurative language such as, "Rocks, asphalt, and earth vomited up from the road as another strike slammed down," made the book much more riveting. All in all, I enjoyed reading the narrative.

Loved this book.

I really enjoyed this book plus it kept me on edge. Loved how Christie and Trace didn’t forget each other. He rescued her about 15 months ago from her abusive husband. She’s divorced now and her ex is out to kill her. Now the cartel is after her, she knows too much and can put her ex away. Loved how protective Trace is and how hard they fall for each other. The last part has so much action, just how many people are after her? Thankfully there’s a very happy ever after. I highly recommend this book.

I almost DNF. Lead character is too naive and too much a princess. She has a close group of friends and no one told her for more than 20 years that her husband was a criminal? She is constantly whining about pain in her shoulder when people are dying around her. She screams constantly and acts like a teenager when she has to be around 40 years old. Loved the dog. Keep the selfish female lead away from me.

Don't bother reading

I decided to go ahead and read this story, even after I discovered the main female character was one of those "stupid females". You know, the kind that goes down to the basement after being told not to. The kind that doesn't listen to the experienced agents. She deserves to get everything that come at her. I only read about a third of the story, up to where she again decides not to follow the advice of the lead FBI agent. At least it was free.

This was a highly suspenseful romance about a woman, Christie, who was to testify against her ex husband and his criminal activities, and at Trace, a hottie agent with Homeland Security and his K-9 partner, who try to protect her. There was lots of drama, intense suspense, and romance. I found it difficult to put it down (wanted to stay up all night reading). Loved it.

Quite Exciting!

I never read Books one and two, but I’m sure going to now!! This was a thrilling and romantic book. I’m not much for romance books, but this book had mystery, blood and gore and just enough romance that didn’t overpower the plot.

Full of profanity

I couldn't read any more after the first couple if chapters. Christies husband was constantly referred to as the B word, then every curse word was thrown in. Very sad, because the story was probably good..just badly written in my opinion.
