Criminal Intentions #28

And So We See Darkly

Rate this book
COP KILLER.

That's the accusation scrawled on the home of a dead man, found executed in his own bedroom. That's the tawdry headline thrown around every news channel, every social media feed, every conversation taking over Baltimore.

That's the name given to a man who may have been innocent, but never had the chance to prove it — and now Malcolm and Seong-Jae must solve his murder. A death that never should have happened; a death on their watch, when legal technicalities tied their hands.

But with the paternity test results hanging over his head, Malcolm grows increasingly erratic, threatening to take his mind from a critical case that could tear Baltimore and the BPD apart. With a dead cop, a dead suspect, and the question of what to do about Juliette and Chrysanthe, there are no easy answers.

Only with Seong-Jae can Malcolm keep himself together.

And only with Seong-Jae will he find the path he needs to tread.

Slender. Angry. (Part) Asian.

Yeah, that about sums me up.

Hi. I’m Cole. Xen. Whatever you want to call me; both are true, and both are lies. My pen names are multitudes, my nicknames legion. Tall, bi/queer, introverted author of a brown-ish persuasion made up of various flavors of Black, Asian, and Native American. I’m cuter than Hello Kitty, more bitter than the blackest coffee, and able to trip over cats in a single half-asleep lurch; I’m what happens when a Broody Antihero and a Manic Pixie Dream Boy fight to the death, and someone builds a person from the scraps left behind. Beardless, I look like the uke in every yaoi manga in existence; bearded or not, I sound like Barry White. About half my time is spent as a corporate writer, and the other half riding a train of WTFery that sometimes results in a finished book. Romance, erotica, sci-fi, horror, paranormal; LGBTQIA and cishet; diverse settings and diverse characters from a diverse author.

Sometimes I shout about things on the internet. Usually intersectional feminism and marginalized voices, and whomever’s punching down in those directions today. Sometimes human sociology, the psychology of sex and gender, and my own gender non-conforming arse (he/him, by the way). Sometimes I get really mad at Stephen Hawking and nerd out all over the place about hairy black holes, and believe it or not, that’s not a terrible pun or even worse innuendo.

That’s it. I’m a huge dork. My humor’s so dry it could empty oceans. I’m a native Southerner from the New Orleans area with zero Southern accent; I’m a mess of multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, multi-lingual influences; I have two cats. I wake up at daft hours of the morning to go running. I crochet terrible, lumpy things that never really turn into anything. I’m older than you think I look. I’m much more shy than my fury makes me sound (signifying gods only know what, but probably nothing). Recently I decided, at 36, that I needed to restart my life and move cross-country, so I tossed 75% of my possessions in the trash and randomly trucked it to Seattle. I’m in love with books and music and technology, and they war with each other for dominance and sometimes come together in a beautiful confluence. Most of the physical books I own are strange, obscure, out of print, overseas imports, or any combination of the four. Most of the physical books I used to own were destroyed in Hurricane Katrina, and have been replaced with the infinite library on my Nook. My wallet has a dangerous attraction to anything with pages; it flirts and teases and gives its all, until there’s nothing left but emptiness and ruin.

There will always be things you don’t know, and I won’t tell.

But ask me late at night over live music in a seedy bar, and you might just get an honest answer.

I liked it. I really did. But this definitely wasn’t one that I loveddd. And that’s probably because in terms of everything minus the case, the focus was solely on Malcom and how he struggled through the knowledge that

“All the little things you do for me that you wouldn’t do for anyone else—to support me, to comfort me, to make me feel happy. Those things are more than words, when they’re done your way. And every little one tells me you love me, even if sometimes you don’t say it.” Malcolm”

But I still loved how Seong-jae tried and tried to be there for Malcom and have Malcom talk and relax and let go. It meant something because it’s definitely not something that seong-jae is used to or have any knowledge on how to give comfort lmao.

“Thank you.”
“Nngh. What are you thanking me for?”
“For making me rest. For knowing what I needed.”
“Nngh,” Seong-Jae repeated most emphatically, before sighing. “Stop embarrassing me over caring for you.”
“Sorry. Can’t.”
“Jot.”

But it was almost domestic and familiar and comforting to watch the two interact in this because at this point in their relationship they’re a step away from marriage (I’m hoping) and it’s shown in the way the act around each other and in their home/work.

“Then come here,” Seong-Jae ordered from behind the screen.
Malcolm just…stood there.
What was Seong-Jae doing?
“I. Said. Come. Here,” he growled.
“…I can’t tell if you’re in a bad mood, or this is foreplay,”

Overall. I still enjoyed it. It made me emotional as fuck when Malcom spoke on gabi’s miscarriage and how he’ll never get over that and how this whole situation is way more personal to him.

“Just love her so much every day that if it’s the last, she’ll have enough love to carry her through for the rest of her life.”
Malcolm’s eyes widened; his fingers tightened against Seong-Jae’s knee. “I…ma’am, that might be exactly what I needed to hear.”

i swear my love for Malcolm & Seong-Jae keeps growing with every episode.

while reading this episode i constantly kept thinking that i absolutely love how long this series is and the fact that we’ve been with Malcolm and Seong-Jae since the very beginning.

we watched these two beautiful men meet, slowly gain each other’s trust, fall in love, go through so many hard things together…

the fact that they know each other so well now, can communicate without even saying a single word, and are each other’s rocks is just so rewarding to witness even after all this time. 🖤

”Seong-Jae looked at him with warm black eyes, with his plush lips subtly parted as if on soundless words of encouragement…
Seong-Jae was saying, i am here.
you can face this, and i will face it with you.
Malcolm tried a shaky, grateful smile, but his lips dragged down against his will. still he shifted Seong-Jae’s grip until their hands tangled together, and he pressed his palm to Seong-Jae’s as if making their lifelines kiss until the paths of them traveled the same road together.”

oh my god… only Cole McCade can describe hand holding so beautifully. 🥺

their domestic moments never fail to make me super happy. them taking a bath together and bickering was SO cute!🤣

we also got to see Sila in this episode. don’t get me wrong, i hate that little bastard just as much as Mal and Seong-Jae, but as a reader who likes messed up characters, he’s still super interesting to me, even though as a villain of the story he’s basically been “defeated” y’know?

i also just gotta mention once again that i freaking ADORE all the side characters! Adelaide, Anji & Cara especially! they’re all just so lovable and wonderful. their comments never fail to make me giggle.

also, i am so eager and excited to see Malcolm and Seong-Jae with Chrysanthe!! i can already anticipate all the cute moments incoming in the next episode!!🥺🥰

the actual story of the season is making me anxious as hell. i have no idea what’s coming and i am NOT ready for it. 🤭🤣

This is so emotional. Leaves me speechless. The feelings guys. The tears. The tears of so fond that we are with the characters. Rosabel and I are saying that for the next episodes we are going to cry just by looking at the covers. And for what comes? I am not surprised that it is true.
Loved this. Love my guys. ❤️

Seong-Jae supporting Malcolm throughout the book? *cries* 😭❤️

"Seong-Jae was saying, I am here. You can face this, and I will face it with you."

Seong-Jae and Malcom having these moments of peace and joy?
*laughs crying* 😂😭❤️

"But thank you for holding me together a little longer.”
“I told you,” Seong-Jae said tightly, right before teeth bit pointedly down on Malcolm’s earlobe, “to stop embarrassing me.”
“Ow!” Malcolm yelped—then burst into laughter and shoved Seong-Jae gently. Yeah…yeah, for right now…he was going to be all right. “Stop using me as a chew toy and give me my goddamned keys."

Malcom and Seong-Jae respecting and holding each other? *cries*😭❤️

"You and me…we stand together. Not one above the other. And even when I forget myself… you remind me of who I need to be.”

And this quote so true that it leaves me admiring Cole more and moreeeee❤️

"The day you start to believe your badge makes you more worthy of life than anyone else,” he said, slow and drawing each word out like dragging out the slow deep cut of a knife into vulnerable skin, “is the day you are no longer a police officer. You are simply a monster."

Some spoiler stuff:
******
-Gabi needs to go to therapy. The situation she's in is costing her and uff, when Mal tells her about the baby... 😭😪
- I knew Gage was hiding something. But I said to myself "not all of them are bad Marian, stop it" well, he is certainly not bad, but he did hide something.
-Of course Silas knows what is going to happen. 😤 That fucker.
-Mal's idea of spending 2 weeks with the baby was clever and I can't wait to read it!

I'm excited for the next one!!! ❤️

I'm so much happier than I was, though much remains dangerous and unsettled. Throughout most of this episode, Mal was still in turmoil, unable to reconcile his past with where his present has ended up *and up-ended*. Once again, Seong-Jae is his rock and the tenderness he showers Malcolm with *in his spitting, wet-cat way, LOL* genuinely melted my heart. By the end, Mal appears to be settling, and making decisions about where they're going from this point, and I'm so here for it.

Baltimore is on the edge of total meltdown, and the rot in the departments appears to go deep. How deep is uncertain but Anji is doing her damnedest to find out. Unfortunately, that leaves only her, Mal & Seong-Jae *and Adelaide* to find out and to take Matheson down, and he seems to have his fingers everywhere. 😕 The worst thing is that they're in danger not just from dirty cops and radicals but maybe the very citizens they're trying to protect.

And I love that Mal has come up with the 2 week trial. I never so much minded the idea of Crysanthe, I just minded the idea of his and Seong-Jae's life being bombed without Juliette taking her share of the responsibility. Not that either of them would see it that way but that's essentially what it would be. The trial period is going to in no way change what Mal & Seong-Jae would do *of course* but it will give Juliette time to reconsider bowing totally out of her daughter's life. This is more of just trusting Cole to take care of them. The thing that I am looking forward to, besides happiness for our guys?

I'll just be over here, sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for the next episode. I'm fairly certain that's how this whole season is going to go.

here we go again

Note: in case someone doesn't know what the series is about, I have a review for the entire first season, so I don’t bother anyone repeating myself 39 times :)

In this episode we continue to witness Mal’s breaking process as he comes to terms with what's going to be his new life while trying to endure a case that keeps getting messier and messier. Thankfully, our beautiful, not-so-cold-anymore SJ is going to be always there for him, both to offer him a shoulder to lean on and to give him the final push he needs to start making decisions. But SJ will also have to be ready to say goodbye to some traumas in his life…

“Are you all right?” Seong-Jae asked, and Malcolm draped an arm across his omr, pressing his face into his chest.
“Yeah,” he said roughly. “But hold me for a little while anyway.”

Although this was a quite slow episode when it comes to characters, sometimes we need to find comfort in silence to gain the strength to keep going. The realism of the emotions is one of CI greatest features and I’m alright with waiting for them to get better, especially with SJ giving Mal all the love in the form of quiet, tiny, great actions. Besides, I have now a whole cast of characters to fangirl about in the meantime. I’m obsessed with the romance between my dear Adeline and her boy, although it seems we are going to suffer even with them. As always, Cara keeps giving everyone a hard time. I miss the episodes where she and SJ had more time to bicker, but we still have some time left before this ends for good *crosses fingers*

The secondary characters keep stealing scenes and I’m glad to say I must be loving them too much, because I missed some secondary plots that didn’t have space in this episode. One more reason to read the third book next, right?

Overall, it’s so good to be back to this marvelous little universe, it feels like coming home. I’m starting to get nervous about this season being the last one. You know something is good when 39 books doesn’t seem enough. I know this series is not perfect, but the joy of reading about SJ, Mal and all the other characters is undescriptable. I also can’t help but admire how Criminal Intentions has the most inclusive LGBT + representation I’ve ever come across, growing bigger and bigger as we move forward in the story.

“You are staring,” he said. “Not undressing.”
Malcolm grinned, pointedly looking away and working at the buckle on his belt. “Art appreciation is a hobby I happen to be passionate about.”

So good to be back with the boys!!! Don’t have a lot of time but a few thoughts on the latest instalment:

* Chapter 0 … as always 😥

* Thankfully, we weren’t left hanging too long regarding a certain pet crotch muffin *gotta love Anji* … those two weeks can’t come soon enough as far as I’m concerned 💕

* I know he’s stressed but me likey angry Mal 😏

* Seong-Jae continues to be an absolute legend for his Jot … I now love him just as much as Mal 💗

* Widow Black 🥺

* 🛁 … hands down my #1 scene 🥰

* I knew Gage would have to get his hands dirty but even I didn’t anticipate how bad it would be 🙀 … so sad for the Tiny Terror 😪

* Adelaide’s a force to be reckoned with but like Mal, I miss lil’ 🕷 too!

* Gabi 😥 Can’t believe she’s been left to work alongside a monster (not happy with Anji OR Mal) 😡

* AND, when she hears Mal’s news 😢 … why Cole, why????

* Given the situation, not sure 😴 was appropriate 😬

* Our Glock wielding duo apprehending their suspect 🙌

* Now, don’t hate me … BUT, I bloody loved the scene with Sila - I missed that SOB (even if it was just a mere glimpse) 😅😚

Some favourite Mal/Seong-Jae moments and yes, I don’t care most of them happen in or by the bathtub 😂:

“Are either of you married?” “Divorced,” Malcolm answered. “I don’t think he’s ever been married, but he’s a little secretive sometimes. Or just forgets to tell me things.” Seong-Jae narrowed his eyes. “I would have told you if I had been married in the past, thank you. Long before you had to meet an ex-husband the way I met your ex-wife.”

“I. Said. Come. Here,” he growled. “…I can’t tell if you’re in a bad mood, or this is foreplay”

“You going to join me?” Seong-Jae eyed the bathtub. Eyed Malcolm. Eyed the bathtub again. “…this promises to be logistically challenging.” “That’s not a no.” “I will try it.” Seong-Jae pointed at Malcolm again, narrowing his eyes. “Do not stop undressing.” “Only you could say that and not make it sexual.” Chuckling, Malcolm draped his shirt over the screen, then peeled out of his undershirt. “I’m stripping, I’m stripping. So bossy.”

“You are staring,” he said. “Not undressing.” Malcolm grinned, pointedly looking away and working at the buckle on his belt. “Art appreciation is a hobby I happen to be passionate about.” A sound of pure disgust flung at him—followed by fabric hitting the side of his head. Malcolm turned his head and got a faceful of Seong-Jae’s boxer-briefs.

“This was a good idea.” “I know. I do not have bad ideas.” Seong-Jae paused, clucking his tongue, then draped his arms over Malcolm’s shoulders with his hands dangling over Malcolm’s chest, heated droplets falling from his fingertips to patter in warm kisses against Malcolm’s skin. “I would not correct me on that if you value your life.”

“Never.” Malcolm sighed softly. “I know I’m probably going to get smacked for actually pointing this out aloud, but…I know how you are. You don’t say things…you show them. All the little things you do for me that you wouldn’t do for anyone else—to support me, to comfort me, to make me feel happy. Those things are more than words, when they’re done your way. And every little one tells me you love me, even if sometimes you don’t say it.” Malcolm cracked one eye open, lips twitching. “You’re just usually not so forceful about loving me.” The sponge stopped. Withdrew. And Seong-Jae pulled back, drawing his arms between them so he could press his palms flat against Malcolm’s shoulder blades and shove. “Get out.”

“Oh, we don’t let this one out. Doesn’t even get play time in the courtyard. Meals in his cell. There’ve been too many goddamned incidents. Try to get him in or out of shackles, somebody’s gonna end up choked out with the chains around his neck that that little fucker riding his back like a monkey.” He curled his lips. “We got one guard in the hospital already, another out on sick leave with his broken leg in a sling.” Seong-Jae blinked. “…how long has he been here?” “Two and a half days.”

“I see he hasn’t abandoned his commitment to being the most aggravating piece of shit on the planet,” Malcolm growled. “Gotta admire that kind of dedication.” The moment Malcolm spoke, the singing cut off in a massive, loudly exaggerated gasp. “Is that Malcolm Khalaji I hear?” Sila drawled out dramatically. “Which means…”

We got some answers to some questions aaaaand, we got some more questions too. 🥲

The beginning of the book was all about the case and how everything goes to shit. The first chapter almost gave a heart attack because Cole being Cole, he didn't show us what we wanted to know that fast.😫🤬

But yep, THE BABY IS HIS!!!! 🔥🔥🔥

AND then wonderful stuff happened but, I'll just share what I thought like the last time:

"He wasn’t on empty just yet. He was close. So close, when he felt like he’d checked out of reality twenty-four hours ago and had yet to quite come back down to earth".

Poor Malcolm, hang in there I know it will get better love. Hang in there. 😫😫

"and he pressed his palm to Seong-Jae’s as if making their lifelines kiss until the paths of them traveled the same road together".

Even in the middle of all the chaos they are beautiful together. ❤

"If Malcolm could pull himself together to focus on rational assessment of the scene without jumping to premature conclusions, then that iron core of strength was still intact. The revelation about his daughter had not shattered it; perhaps simply knocked it somewhat off balance, but Seong-Jae thought… Given time, yes. Malcolm would find his equilibrium again".

Yes he will! He's a stubborn wolf!! With more strength that anyone, he will be fine. 🥰

"wondered what a man’s inner landscape had to look like to be able to kill a girl and still feel good about himself in the morning".

Everytime I see a documentary I ask myself the same question, guys are fucked up, because yep, the percentage of psychopaths is like 95%male 5% women or something like that and I'm heterosexual for what? Still dunno. 😐

"Or maybe I’ve been watching too much anime and just wanted an indirect kiss.”

Oh man, I forgot about those silly things, I used to watch anime too and this brought me back, that's why I love Adelaide so much. AND FUCK YOU GAGE! U just wait till Cara gets her hands on you!!!

"Why the fuck he was with this amazing girl, when he couldn’t do anything but fuck this up and maybe get her in trouble. More trouble than she deserved. More trouble than she should have to deal with. He just…"

Why? See my last last point and that's the answer. 😤😤

"nature of U.S. politics, sway public opinion with a hashtag and the bare minimum of factual information with a little spin applied—when they bothered with facts at all. Didn’t matter as long as it was meme-able and could get as many people either enthused or pissed as possible; didn’t matter as long as they were saying".

This happens all over the world, my country was controlled by twitter's opinion and what happened? Dictatorship, we need to educate better, if not that or Trump happens...

"the more he stoked people’s drastically divided passions on this issue, the harder it would be for Malcolm and Yoon to navigate investigating the case when people would"

Sounds familiar. 💅🏻💅🏻

“It’s nothing. I just didn’t get much sleep last night. I’m good—and I’m looking forward to getting to work.”

It's not nothing!!! My little girl is hurting, but it is better she stays away from Gage, I actually don't see a good end to that thing. What he did is just... he helped in a murder, that's so fucked up, unless he speaks up and helps them get Mattheson In jail, he's in deep shit

"Seong-Jae considered, for a few moments—considered whether his presence would simply be a burden on Malcolm, or if perhaps he might offer some company and comfort, before untangling himself from the sheets and slipping out of bed".

It would never be a burden, Malcolm is unreal like that. 😍😍

"Malcolm was ever and always warm as a furnace"

I run cold all the time. 😤😤

"Mellon spluttered, cramming his narrow face against the bars again, cheeks bulging as he tried to squeeze through like an excitable dog trying to get out of his kennel. “You can’t just walk off and leave me with him!”

This all situation cracked me up, the way the guys see Mellon like a puppy. It was a good laugh amidst all of it, even though the guy is also in deep shit.

"Especially a girl who was a near-stranger, and still so completely jarring to see her sitting in the server room in the homicide bullpen, surrounded by a rather sparkly collection of odds and ends. Instead of Sade".

I know Mal Mal, but I love that girl so treat her well. 🥰

“Don’t waste your life on what ifs,” Mrs. Black said softly. “Don’t waste her on what ifs.” She cradled her daughter closer, one hand cupping the back of her head, fingers threading into the baby’s soft brown swirl of hair. “Just love her so much every day that if it’s the last, she’ll have enough love to carry her through for the rest of her life.”

This right here was like a slap in the face, a light bulb moment, a vision, something! I wanted to tell the lady to drop the mic, to give her an award. This was what Mal needed and thank god he got it.

“I’m sorry. It just…hit me, this idea of one day someone having to explain to Chrysanthe that her fa—” He choked on the word, tried again, tasted it like swallowing ink to script the word on his soul. “—father died in the line of duty. One day Marianne Black’s going to have to explain to Lila what happened to her father, and I just…”

The first time he talked about himself as a father, omg he's grown so much. 😭😭🤧

"I can’t tell if you’re in a bad mood, or this is foreplay"

🤣🤣 we needed chapter 8 like crazy!!! Oh my god it was sweet, funny and so warm, love this guys, they have ruined love for me. I'm gonna get me some cats!!

“You are staring,” he said. “Not undressing.” Malcolm grinned, pointedly looking away and working at the buckle on his belt. “Art appreciation is a hobby I happen to be passionate about.”

I mean, I can't ugh!!!! *melts*

“You’re just usually not so forceful about loving me.”

It's true, so true. 🥰❤🤧

"Seong-Jae poked his shoulder. “You will get wrinkly. Er. Wrinklier.” “Just me?” “I,” Seong-Jae proclaimed, “am imbued with wrinkle-resistant properties.”

Asians have really good skin, is genes, facts.

“And miss all this excitement?” Malcolm gestured at the empty streets. “My heart rate can’t take it.”

I missed this Malcolm, in the second season he was tense all the time with the weight of the world, so we barely got to see him like he is. And as this book began to end, I saw him being himself more and more and I'm MORE IN LOVE!! SO FUCK YOU MALCOLM, I CAN RAISE YOUR BABY, LITERALLY. 😡😗

"Larson slowly craned his head toward Malcolm, then Seong-Jae, but his wide eyes remained trained sidelong on the seething, hovering presence Thompson made, looming over him and leaning in menacingly close, watching him unblinkingly without a word. Seong-Jae actually felt a little out of place. Being the intimidating, creepy one was his job"

Seong Jae too began to be more like himself, I love seeing this.

"Another strange hotel room. Another date with the highly disturbed individual who called himself Sila. Another case with unanswered questions"

Fuck this shit, *throws the desk* I THOUGHT WE WERE DONE WITH THE FUCKER! UGH! How I loathe the guy!!! Ugghhhhh! 🤬🤬🤬

“Could you put the phone next to her?” Malcolm asked, and felt an odd little jump inside, his voice cracking. “I just…want to hear.”

“Goodnight, little one,” he whispered, and Seong-Jae’s hold tightened, fingers curling against his arm. “She’s smiling,” Juliette whispered back, her voice far off. “Like she knows you already.”

My soul? Gone
My ovaries? Couldn’t take it, they exploded
My heart? Melted.
Me? Couldn’t take it so I'm still looking at the ceiling and wondering: when can we get a machine that let's us make a book character real? Because I want a Malcolm. 😭😭🤧

"Sila truly wanted to die"

You know what I would do? Let him live. 💅🏻💅🏻

"We must bring the storm, and make it biblical!”

*Sighs* this is gonna attract crazy people, like what's happening on real life. I see what you are doing Cole and I like it.

“We must take back our country,”

Trump is that you? *eyeroll*

“Well now,” she said, and pulled the slide out, holding it up to the overhead light in her lab. “Just who might you be?”

Get your freak on gurll!!

"SILA KICKED HIS FEET AGAINST the wall of his cell and rolled on his smelly, uncomfortable cot—and laughed".

A chapter on his pov? So sick of his shit really!

Welp, this was a ride but I feel this whole season is gonna be like that. The case is getting clearer but it's nowhere near solving, I have no idea who is moving the puppets but I'm inclined to think of Mattheson, maybe he's creating a chaos to fix it? Because honestly, what could Liliane and the druglords gain from this? Not much, but Mattheson? A lot.

In the next book we will get Mal and Seong Jae with the little girl right? RIGHT? I mean, how the fuck I'm gonna survive that?

Looooooved

Sorry, not a review, I'm still not in the right headspace to write one, but...

I'm about to drop some cuteness on you in...

three...
two...
one...

Whoa... wait! This is a major spoiler for this season, so take a peek at your own risk. ;-)

The rest was a heavy dose of swooniness (yes, that's a thing!), a touch of heartbreak (my poor Mal!) and a dash of what-the-f*ckery (I don't even say his name!).

And with that I'm out again. *disappears in a cloud of dust*

lovely (life) advice from Mrs. Black:
❝Don't waste your life on what ifs,❞ Mrs. Black said softly. ❝Don't waste her on what ifs.❞ She cradled her daughter closer, one hand cupping the back of her head, fingers threading into the baby's soft brown swirl of hair. ❝Just love her so much every day that if it's the last, she'll have enough love to carry her through for the rest of her life.❞ 🥺

Seong-Jae and Mal making me feel giddy, despite all the sad undertones this episode gave me:
Malcolm burst into laughter, reaching a bit awkwardly to snare an arm around Seong-Jae's waist. ❝C'mon. Don't go all wet cat on me just because I know how you work. I know because I notice. Because I pay attention to everything about you.❞
❝Stop talking about it,❞ Seong-Jae hissed, and draped against his back sulkily, falling still again, the water eddying gently around them. ❝I know that you notice. I do not need to be told.❞
❝...must be a little warm in here. Maybe we turned the water too hot.❞ Malcolm rubbed his cheek against Seong-Jae's throat. ❝You're feeling a little overheated, love.❞

leaving off with my favorite Cara moment of this episode, bc she's my spirit animal:
Whipping on her, Mellon bit off, ❝Excuse you, I will have you know-❞
❝Don't care,❞ Sten said, cutting him off with an upraised hand. ❝I'm not interested until you're dead. And you're talking too much to be dead, unless you're a corpse and that stick in your ass is holding you up. Not a bad job. Ventriloquist somewhere?❞

A LOT happens in this episode, on the personal and professional front.

Mostly Malcolm gets the results for his paternity test, and let’s it put it like this: With emotions swaying between panic, shock, delight and so much tenderness, Mal has a lot to process.
I totally get why he feels so overwhelmed and has trouble concentrating on … pretty much anything.

And Seong-Jae SHINES. I think the bathroom scene is one of the sweetest sexual encounters these guys have had so far and sent my ‘swoono-meter’ into overdrive. Perfect!

As if their personal news aren’t enough to blow our guys’ minds, the developments in their case are truly scary and awful. Things get out of hand so quickly, and words get twisted so easily – the realism of it is distressing, and so well observed!

There is so much tension there for all beloved characters, from Mal and Seong-Jae to Anji, Gabi and Adelaide, I’m already on tenterhooks what’s going to be next.
And the hints that Gage is maybe not quite the guy we thought doesn’t make this easier!

I was very glad about the little injections of humour which softened the edges of events all along…
Everyone (even the ‘bad’ guys🤣) ribbing Mal and Seong-Jae about ‘being disgusting’ together, is really funny!
And Seong-Jae’s still getting the best lines!

Fabulous episode, but the dark clouds are brewing into a hurricane very quickly (and WTH is Sila doing now?) and the worst is that “no on can be trusted” It is very much a small group of good guys trying to face a tsunami.

Just leaving you with a couple of swoon-worthy lines …

(Mal) “You and me, we stand together. Not one above the other. And even when I forget myself…you remind me who I need to be.”

“No matter what, no matter what each day might bring … Seong-Jae promised himself. He would be Malcolm’s shield, and take the pain so his omr would not have to.”

Loved it! The relationship growth between Mal and Seong-Jae is nothing short of swoony deliciousness. These two men are everything to and for each other, and it shines through their connection and love for each other.

Poor Mal is struggling after being broadsided and Seong-Jae is a mountain of strength (a pillar isn't big or strong enough for what SJ is doing for Mal).

Loved being back with the boys, and can't wait to see where McCade takes them next.

3.5 ⭐️ Reading this episode made me feel like now SJ and Malcolm have reached a higher confidence level in their relationship. Both of them have found their comfort zone. They respect each other, Without saying anything, they understand each other.

For some reason, I found myself didn't enjoy the episode as much as I thought I would. I was getting a little bored with the episode. I was exhausted. There were too many side characters. I think probably, it's me. Because I should say, I suck at remembering names. My memory is not something I’m proud of. I've failed to remember most characters’ names in the previous episode when I start the new one apart from regular characters in the season. I was so confused most of the time.

I know Malcolm surely will be a great father to his daughter. The most important thing I am anticipating from the next episode is how will SJ take care of Malcolm’s daughter, and how much love SJ will be ready to give for Crysanthe. (probably waiting for the cutest moment of SJ and her)
Fingers crossed ✌️

❝are you all right?❞ seong-Jae asked, and malcolm draped an arm across his omr, pressing his face into his chest.
❝yeah,❞ he said roughly. ❝but hold me for a little while anyway.❞

the final season has come …
there will be many hardships.

but through it all …
our boys will stand together.

description

season three, episode II, and so we see darkly, thrusts us back into the thick of it.

the suspect from book one is dead. the other is placed into temporary protective custody. and our boys are trying to tie all the loose threads together.

meanwhile, i'm in the corner absolutely dying over all of the cute seong-jae and malcolm moments. the bath scene, the baking scene, the nap scene, literally seong-jae just hugging malcolm. so basically, any scene where seong-jae and malcolm are interacting.

❝so you’re going to bully me into relaxing?❞
❝if i have to.❞

my favorite aspect of this episode was, once again, watching malcolm lean against seong-jae. watching seong-jae do everything in his power to simply be there for his omr.

meanwhile …
case wise
mmmm 🤨🤨

SILA- BE GONE
*boo hiss*

❝ah, malcolm, seong-jae, my darlings…❞ he purred. ❝you truly have no idea what’s coming, do you?❞

he needs to exit stage fucking left. that little psycho needs to stay trapped in the fiery depths of hell prison, where he belongs.

I've finally caught up to IRL releases for this series and I will now combust with impatience 😩😢

“I’m not broken just yet, love.” He found Seong-Jae’s hand, then, and gripped it tight. “But thank you for holding me together a little longer.”
“I told you,” Seong-Jae said tightly, right before teeth bit pointedly down on Malcolm’s earlobe, “to stop embarrassing me.”

Omg this episode 🥺😫 What Malcolm's going through just guts me. Just when I think I couldn't love these two more, I am (again) proven wrong.

McCade deserves an award, a prize, a fucking winning lottery ticket for this masterpiece of a series. I don't know if there will ever be such a well-rounded, beautifully developed, soft, realistic series as this one with some of the best characterization the world has ever seen.

Oh, Malcolm. It's heartbreaking but yet almost poetic where this series is headed. I, for one, am super excited for it and I cannot wait 🥰🥰

I hope the next book comes out soon, but tbh I'm dreading this series being over 😅

I am so moved with how Seong-Jae supports Malcolm, I love it. I can’t wait to see how they will handle themselves with the baby .

As for Sila ( I have a love hate relationship with him )

My heart bleeds for Gabi she really needs to heal and for that to happen she has to go for therapy

So let me just say I love these books and this series. That said I hit a stumble with the end of White Rabbit II and sulked for ages. I picked up again figuring the next series would be complete by now. And no I didn’t check because I’m an idiot. So now I find myself ready to start the last available book. I hate the wait between books but particularly with this series. There’s so many characters and threads and my memory is not my friend these days….

Anyway moan over this was another brilliant book. And it’s straight onto the next one for me.

For some reason I didn't enjoy this one quite as much. Maybe it was because Seong-Jae and Malcolm didn't get as much page time as usual. I like the side characters but most of them had scenes here, and multiple. I guess it just threw me out of the story a bit, maybe just the crime bit, cuz obviously their stories are part of it all too. I also couldn't read this as quick as usual so maybe that did it too. But I found myself not caring to continue during bits of it... :(

Still had all the feels! Love that. So amazing how McCade can pack everything in without it feeling at all forced. Especially loved the bath scene. So sweet.

Very interested in seeing where things go from here, as always.

A briefly amused sound escaped Anjulie's lips, before she nodded towards the perimeter--where Seong-Jae waited next to the line of yellow crime scene tape, watching Malcolm with that wordless, accepting gaze that always seemed to remind Malcolm that no matter what...Seong-Jae was always there, his arms and his heart open.
"Your boyfriend's waiting for you," she murmured.
"Yeah," Malcolm said, and a quietness flushed through him, a softness, that worked better than any coffee to fortify him to face the day. "He is."

"[...]People mostly ignored him or, um, trolled the hell out of him--" She broke off, eyeing Malcolm. "Do you know what that means?"
"For the love of--
I'm not that old."

You don't say things...you show them. All the little things you do for me that you wouldn't do for anyone else--to support me, to comfort me, to make me feel happy. Those things are more than words, when they're done your way. And every little one tells me you love me, even if sometimes you don't say it."

"The day you start to believe your badge make you more worthy of life than anyone else is the day you are no longer a police officer. You're simply a monster."

I cannot b e l i e v e we already have to deal with youknowwho again. I cannot beLIEVE it. Except.. yes I can.

I don't have many outright feelings about this one beyond just enjoying it. Lots of different emotional beats (the scene with the widow was hella sad but also kind of lovely), lots of little reveals (one which.. aw man, Lombardi, why), and all signs pointing to a nice big shitstorm to come. But sadly I now have to wait for said storm with everyone else because I'm all caught up. Whoops.

Man I know I’m late for the Criminal Intentions train but I’m glad I’m aboard now. Cole is like the gift that keeps on giving, Seong-Jae and Malcolm are some of the most fascinating characters I have ever read. The type of characters that I don’t mind waiting and reading how they evolve from one episode to the next. This Season is promising to be the best yet.

⭐︎4.5 stars!⭐︎

While a little slow for me at first one the case end of things, hence the .5 stars off for me, the rest was amazing as usual.

We get the answer to the question we've had since the season 2 finale in this, but I'll avoid spoilers on it. Just know that it of course involves .

Case wise, we're really starting to get into it. The cop was killed in book 1 and in this Carlos Ramirez, one of the suspects of the murdered cop, was murdered in this one.

It creates a frenzy as people on both sides start a protest over it. Mal and Seong-Jae's jobs are to find out if it was the far-right "cop supporters" doing it in retaliation, the people Carlos and Escobar were - I'm guessing paid to take the fall for them - aligned with, I guess you can say, killing them before they can talk, or if they were cops themselves - or if the cops and the people who paid Carlos and Escobar are one in the same....

Also things are inching forward with Matheson, and Gabrielle is stuck with him at work, poor Gage, as he himself puts it "sold his soul to the devil" and he is a good man, but when we want the people we love to live....how far will we go to make that happen? I wish Gage wasn't embroiled in this, he's such a good guy, a kind hearted soul, but...we learn that he was forced to do something bad and it's putting him in danger, and would put Adelaide in danger....and it all just sucks.

But hopefully over the course of this season as everything unravels, these two can find their way back to each other.

But yeah, Gage is in some shit....I wish he would tell Adelaide, and he might at some point, but...right now he isn't.

Aside from all the case stuff, Malcolm is going through it a bit in this episode, with what he learns about personally. Where before Seong-Jae was the one going through it and Malcolm was a steady, supportive presence, now it's the other way around.

I loved those small parts where Seong-Jae was just there for Malcolm, there for him to lean on, to hold, to take comfort it. Seong-Jae thinks he'll do a crappy job at being the supportive one, but he's wrong. He's there for Malcolm in the best ways this episode, even if he's his usual lovably prickly self while doing it.

My favorite scene in this episode is when Seong-Jae makes Malcolm relax and shut off for an hour in the bath with him. It's showing his love in all the best of ways, while these two get to be Mal and Seong-Jae, with Malcolm being almost unbearably sweet to Seong-Jae and Seong-Jae hissing like a cat about it and being "angry" about but totally loving it, actually.

They still make my heart soar when reading them. I love them together so much. And seeing them wade through the crap in their jobs together and so damn solid in their relationship makes me so happy.

I love that several others have said how "disgusted" they are by their PDA (even though it is barely anything, and mostly them just bickering like an old married couple). Like Malcom and Seong-Jae aren't even trying and their love is just so big and wonderful that others can't stand it. I LOVE it haha 😁

Overall, great second installment. Still was a tad slow for me at times with the case stuff (sometimes all the information gathering process of things can be a bit tedious for me, even though I do enjoy detective/mystery stuff a lot. That's one part that doesn't particularly excite me.), but otherwise a wonderful second installment in this third season.

I can't wait for the next one! 😊

3.75 🌟

While it's always a pleasure to read Cole McCade's writing, for some reason And So We See Darkly didn't quite hold my attention to the same degree as previous books. It was probably a me thing, when I was reading it I don't think I was quite in the mood for the crime/angsty aspects, so I found myself rushing it a bit to get to the moments with Seong-Jae and Malcolm instead. There was a lot of side storyline information happening so it was a little hard to keep up withe everything.

Nonetheless, I'm VERY intrigued and excited to see how everything plays out. Finishing a CI book always leaves me with soooo many questions that I need answered !!

I can't wait for the next book, really hoping for some cute moments with the bebe + SJ+ Mal 👨‍👨‍👧

CM has done it again. Another edition of Criminal Intentions that was pretty fantastic. ❤ Though I have this awful feeling that he is about to unleash a shit storm on his readers real soon.

I absolutely LOVE these two men!!!!! Have I said that before? Malcolm and Seong-Jae have come such a long way. Back in season 1 I would have never envisioned them where they are today. Both on a professional and personal level. For every wave that has come their way they have been able to ride it out and end up better than they were before. Seong-Jae continues to be Malcolm’s rock. ❤ Add to that the support of Anjulie and Sten. I think he is on his way to steadier footing.

Talking about Anjulie, she is ready to lose her shit. Well, I guess she already has but she is about to take it to a whole new level!! The waters are getting pretty murky in the BPD. It is rather alarming. I’m a bit shocked I’d like to see things work out with him and Adelaide. She is pretty cool!

And then of course that visit with a certain someone that makes my skin crawl put a huge knot in my belly!! He just gives me such a sick feeling.

Meh........I think I've lost interest in this series. I loved the first season but now that they're a couple they're all sappy and so many of their interactions are just the same thing we've heard multiple times in other books. Plus I'm not even a little digging plot line and Malcolm's response is driving me nuts. Man up dude and focus on work when you need to. Stop being a weeping

With each new book I love this series a little more and at this point I honestly don't what I'll do when the season ends.

The case keeps getting more and more complicated and I really appreciate the way Cole is approaching the subjects because this kind of thing should be talked about but it's very easy to fucked up while you're trying to.
I loved the way the others characters had they moment to shine (especially Adelaide because honestly this woman is my new icon) and we get to see new dynamics like the one between Anjulie, Adelaide Malcolm and Seong-Jae.
I am very worried about Malcolm because this man desperatly needs a hug and a break but I really liked the way we're seeing him "coping" with his trauma in a way that's very similar to the way Seong-Jae was coping with his in season 2.

Cole never disappoints. Amazing book addition to the series.

Mal has still so much road to walk and so many bumps to jump on. It’s too much for him. He is struggling and he is making an effort to be better do better. Not alone never alone though. Seong-Jae is a solid wall for Malcolm to lean on. Mal and Seong-Jae are a team, the best team. They follow each other, support each other, hold each other, trust each other. And like I always say I love them dearly and they never disappoint. They are that couple that are anything and everything to each other. Their characters have growth and depth… and sass coming from Seong-Jae the hissing bratty cat we all adore.

I just want to say I love Sten, she is my favorite character after Seong-Jae and Mal. And the words she said to Mal to support him and to give even a bit of relief… like she is a good friend and a good person y’all. She is the best.
Meanwhile Anji is under too much pressure and she is trying her best.
And Gage… Let’s say we learn some things about what’s happening at his side.

Case has a depth and we see the corruption, brutality more and more with this book. And I am glad that Cole included these certain events and thoughts. Well written, has some good length. I like reading Mal, Seong-Jae and their journey so that makes me happy. Case and emotion packed. Things get messy and complicated. Gives you everything you can want and more from Season 3.

Malcolm is definitely a father. I feel like a Maury Povich episode. Eeeek.
Seong-Jae is Malcolm’s rock too.
I love Seong-Jae in this episode.

The case gets more twisty and I’m sure it’s not going to end well. Firing center mass is what cops are trained to do. The arm shot is a fiction well much like this plot obviously IS fiction. Sigh

Sila is in this one and he really really doesn’t like being locked up. He should have went over that cliff in Season 2.

One episode left until who knows when. I hope the storyline is somewhat resolved in episode 3 😳😳
