There are some bad reviews on this book because of certain questionable consent issues. While I can see why it upset people, personally, it didn't bother me.

In real life, yes. That shit would not fly. But this is an alien fantasy world, and I like me a domineering alpha male in my fantasies. Don't judge me. ;)

So yes, Vruksha had a few red flags flying, but I was able to overlook them because, hello, alien naga man. And yes, maybe Gemma gave into him too easily, but again, I was there for it because this is romance and we all know it's headed there anyway. And it made for some fantastic smut along the the way, I must say!

But where this book really stand out to me was in the plot. I've been reading a LOT of sci-fi lately, and this one excelled at really piqueing my interest in future books (I want to know more about Zhallaix!) and the overall story arc. The other naga males were intriguing, and there were a few plot twists that caught me way off guard!

All in all, I loved this and I can't wait for the next one!

So many issues

Okay.

OK, so this first complaint is just a personal pet peeve of mine.

Why do all the women in sci-fi/paranormal romance have red hair? Or red hair and green/blue eyes? It’s the most rare color combo in the world.

Only 2% of the population has red hair.
Only 2% of the population has green eyes.
Only 0.14% has both red hair and green eyes. Less than that have red hair and blue eyes so WHY?!

(Seriously scroll and see how many covers in PNR and scifi romance have red heads on the cover. It’s...a LOT! And I’m not hating redheads—I’m married to one!)

MOST OF YOUR READERS HAVE BROWN EYES AND BLACK/BROWN HAIR.

So, maybe...represent them more?

(Why do you think Bella from Twilight was so relatable to so many teens? She was unremarkable and looked like 98% of the caucasian population! Better yet, do mixed/multi race characters! We’re growing to be the majority now, yay!)

So why are redheads so insanely over-represented in paranormal in scifi Romance? Because authors want someone that stands out and is “rare” and that’s the easiest way to do it, I guess?

😐

Ugh.

Now to the real issues...

The toxic alphahole thing...the, “Mine, mine! MiNe!” Two-year-old throwing a tantrum trope is so so overdone and tired. Can we retire it, please?

I don’t want a controlling book boyfriend. I want a book boyfriend who is in control of himself.

I don’t want a possessive book boyfriend. I’m not a toy to be owned. I want a protective hero. I want *belonging*. Not ownership.

That requires *relationship development* and *trust building*.

Lust is not love.
Lust is not love.
Lust is not love.

Vrushka is that typical “nice guy” that starts off meh then quickly escalates when you reject him to toxic rage monster who goes on and on about how he’s owed something and then proceeds to passive aggressively punish and pressure the woman until she caves or gets a restraining order.

Hella toxic and yuck! Seriously, if you think this is sexy, seek therapy NOW!

He does not care about her as a person. He saw red hair and pointed like a kid in a candy store and decided yep that’s mine.

NOT romantic. You could swap her out for any ol red (ugh) head.

Here are some snippets:

“My anger ignites. “You deny us? Still? I have caught you. You belong to me now! You ran and I caught you, my bride. Baring yourself to me and giving yourself over to my protection is all that is left!” I want to grab her, pull her to me, and shake her with sense. “It is what I have won! What I am owed!”

“How dare she? How dare she deny me? She thinks she can have my protection for nothing in return? She thinks her actions will not have consequences?”

“You will come to realize your situation and the generosity I provide.”

“If she does not want me, then she will have to watch me in my madness. She will witness what she does to me by her mere presence alone.“

“Because the only protectors of this world are brutal and territorial, and I am kind in comparison to them....But my kindness has limits.”

And of course this bullying works pretty fast.

“Seeing me naked isn’t that much to give… He could have asked for much more, and he still might, if I keep denying him, and asking questions he clearly doesn’t like answering. If I don’t give him something, he might make me pay for every inch of his hospitality going forward.”

To then:
“I feel… lucky to have been chosen by him. Appreciative now that I’ve had food, warmth, and sleep.“

And finally:
“He said he wouldn’t touch! But I don’t stop him as he...”

Girl, the misogyny is coming from inside the house! You’re being manipulated and abused! Run! He literally does not respect your boundaries. If you said don’t touch and he touched—that’s called assault.

Nothing like a little emotional abuse, guilt tripping and manipulation to make a great start to a relationship. Ugh.

I get it. He’s the alien caveman trope. Me Tarzan—you Jane. But what we have here is a toxic, abusive “nice guy” repacked as man snake and a previously intelligent professional woman who has devolved into a lusty sex-obsessed moron after one-yes A-single compliment. That’s the price of her dignity, a single compliment. Yiikkkeees.

She never falls for him as a person (which...why would she? He’s awful.), she only likes his abs and ...assets. It’s completely shallow. I had to stop at 38% when she caved and jumped into the sack with him for a damn compliment. Good god.

If you were sold to a random man, told you have no choice but to eventually do it with him and then he got mad when you rejected him and proceeded to wack it in front of you, calling your name all the while to “punish you” for denying him your body he feels he’s owed, would you be like “ooo yes take me now?” Or “ahhh police!”

Right.

Now add a tail. It makes it worse—not better.

He’s irredeemable. I don’t want them to end up together. Hell, I want her to bludgeon him with a pan Rapunzel style and save herself!

Post-apocalypse Earth!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙
Romance: 💚🖤💙❤️💜
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘📔
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏
Character development: 😚🙂😁😍🥰

The heroine: Gemma - she is on a mission to Earth to get technology to beat the alien menace who have been attacking them. She and a few other women board a ship to Earth to make a deal with the Naga, who are snakelike people with the technology much of the galaxy has wanted. However, she is distraught when she sees a red Naga male looking at her through the jungle.

The Hero: Vruksha - He is a pit viper and of the Naga who rule their own lands but need mates. They thought the humans were long gone. They have never seen a live human being until recently when they landed on a spaceship deep in the mountains of Earth. They and their robots restored the ruins into what it was, a military facility. Early on he sees a woman with Red Hair like his tail.

The Story: The Naga make a deal with the human men to fight for the right to claim human women as brides in order to propagate their species. There are many Naga males but only two human females. So they have to chase the women and fight for them in order to claim the humans.

Vruksha has known since he first saw Gemma that she was his. He has no fear of fighting for the right to claim her. Though Gemma has worked hard to get where she was at, in the position of communications director on the bridge of the Dreadknot. She intended to keep her position, not be traded as nothing but flesh for the Naga.

This book was told in dual points of view via dual narration. John Masterson and Elizabeth Hart are the narrators and they both do a good job. John Masterson speaks with a bit of a stilted voice which is common for the narration of alien males. He also does a bit of a hiss at times which works well for Vruksha. Elizabeth has a strong, clear voice which matches Gemma perfectly.

The story is original for alien romance. The fact that it takes place on Earth in the distant future and the Naga are the species that are native to the planet while the humans come in a spaceship is different than any book I have read before and is quite interesting.

I really loved the concept with this one and that it was set on a post-apocalyptic earth.
I also loved the idea of snake men hybrids and the fact they were also different kinds of snake men or Naga as there called here.
I’ve read this author before and do enjoy their work and was excited to discover a whole new world.
The Hero Naga Vruksha was your usual possessive obsessed male he lived and breathed for Gemma and wanted nothing more than to possess her and keep other males away from her.
But he was also sweet and at times vulnerable he had been so lonely and just wanted Gemma to choose him as he had chosen her.

There’s a deeper ongoing story arc here that I’m excited to see develop further.
We are also introduced to other characters that will get their own stories. In terms of the heat, this was a spicy one.
The main characters Could have done with more development but I think that maybe it was that we were focusing on what was happening rather than what had already passed with them that made me feel that way.
But the subject itself was so interesting I kind of put that on the back burner.

I liked that Gemma wasn’t one of those annoying heroines you sometimes get in this type of fiction.
overall my favourite part of this story is the post-apocalyptic setting and how unusual the entire set-up is and what this will mean for future stories set in this world.
I will definitely be reading further with this series and am excited to see where this goes.

👏👏👏 well said M.

~*~*~*~

Let’s get two things straight.

39% DNF

NO MEANS NO. IT DOES NOT MEAN “oh well my body is responding so even though I said no and you decided to touch me anyway after you promised you wouldn’t it’s fine”
NO. MEANS. NO.

Second. A viper is not a sub species of snake like the King Cobra or Boomslang. In fact, Cottonmouths and Copperheads are vipers. It’s a type of snake. If you meant “PIT Viper” then say so. There are no red vipers. Regardless of this being a work of fiction you decided to put real snake species in there, except the male character in the first book is completely wrong.

Please for the love of what is holy do your proper research and leave the misogyny out of beloved women’s fiction.

OH, GROSS.

This book feels like a science fiction monster sex novellization of an unsolicited dick pic.

The snake dude shows the heroine his wang after kidnapping her and is stunned that she still doesn't catch the romantic feelings after seeing his goods.

The characters keep going over some kind of backstory where some evil machinations wiped out the female snake population but the truth is they just left because who wants a dick shoved into her face??????

Trigger warnings where??? (R*pe + Coercion)

did i finished it? Yes, but out of spite... That one star is because I can not put zero stars
The plot was good, I am not going to lie...But CONSENT, was not there! THAT was not cnc or duvious consent in my opinion.. it was coercion and rape plus stockholm syndrome ... also I did not see any tags that warn the reader, but that might be my edition.

well this is new to me. though I shouldn't be surprised that I find books like this all the time. especially alien smut.

so we have a snake/human alien who can mate female human women. so ... you know... snake anatomy. with a snake knot.
description

I just can't be surprised with the shit I find anymore. Compared to tenticles and literal spider aliens to the famous blue aliens? Ain't nothing surprise me anymore... unless I happen to read a normal boring romance novel.

the closest any book will get to that is Red, White & Royal Blue and others of the same.

But I'm here for this and I find it interesting. The plot as well. And fuck PETER.

Gemma and Vruksha meet in questionable circumstances, that result in him abducting her. He’s go that whole “me caveman, you my wife” vibe going on, mixed with some random awareness of technology. Gemma was a mix of soft and fierce, depending on how traumatized she was at any given time. The two had a whirlwind romance, that was primarily getting it on.
The world building for this series is fascinating and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the complexities and the close look at ethics.

Spice: 5/5

Triggers: abduction, captivity, dubcon, involuntary voyeurism, involuntary nudity, burn injuries (side character), violence, gore, attempted murder

A new author for me. This was an ok read, the storyline is good, with intrigue and mystery to entice you to finish to find out what happened in the past on Earth that led to the present. The male characters are what I would class as true aliens, based on a serpentine species. I found the female character a pain at times, but all in all, I will read the next book in the series, as I am intrigued to see where the author is going with this series.

First read: July 26th, 2021 (Kindle)
Second read: April 25th, 2023 (Audiobook)

✧・゚: *✧・゚:* *:・゚✧*:・゚✧✧・゚: *✧・゚:* *:・゚✧*:・゚

I finally was able to reread this book and give it a proper review. This book is one of the first of the genre I've ever read, and hooked me hard. This second time, I listened to the audiobook and I liked the narrators a lot. I just wished it had been a duet and work together rather than them reading full chapters.

The premise of this book is quite original to me; Humans escaped Earth many centuries ago after the Lurkers started decimating them. Fifteen hundred years later, what remains of humanity sends a reconnaissance team on the planet to search for technology that might help them in their war against the Ketts. But they aren't alone...Snake-humanoid beings lurk in the shadow and they want to steal the human females. A trade between the men and the nagas is settled; the nagas will bring the technology the humans want, and the humans will offer the women of their crew. Vruksha knows which female is his; the beautiful redhead who matches his own coloring. When the females are finally released, he will stop at nothing to get her. She's already his.

Her red hair is the reason I know she belongs to me. We share the same color. She wears my color. Only my female would have my coloring.
-Vruksha

I think Vruksha is a hero that some might like, and some might not. I personally love such an obsessed, possessive and jealous male lead. He was intense and eager to have Gemma, and didn't take no for an answer. If his personality can put off some at first, I'd say that it all make sense as the book goes. His aggressiveness, hot temper, his deep insecurity, his fear of rejection, etc.

Oh, how I want to dominate her until she vows to let me rule her. If she allowed me to take over, I would impale her on my member and bind her body to me as I rutted her continuously for days on end. I’d make sure she’d never make it to the stars.-Vruksha

As for Gemma, I suppose I liked her. I don't really have anything negative to say about her. In my opinion, she was the perfect match for Vruksha who was very intense and demanding. I liked that she was able to somewhat bargain with him, communicate with him. She brought some balance into the mix. She was strong and brave, and she learned to accept Vruksha. I found it nice to know she wasn't considered pretty, but that Vruksha thought she was fantastical.

They had a nice chemistry. Obviously, there was a bit of dubious consent at first but it was so incredibly hot. Sometimes I wonder what's wrong with me lol. The intimate scenes were many, and they were all intense. If Vruksha was very difficult and needy, I found that he could also be very sweet. Gemma and him had a few cute moment:

“I miss you,” I whisper.
His arms close in around me. “I’ve never left.”
“I need you,” I say, holding in my tears. Words fail me.
His hands tangle into my hair. “I’m here, female.”
“Don’t leave me tonight. If you do, take me with.”
Vruksha pulls me into his arms. “I’ll stay.”

He hisses. I hiss back at him. His lips wrinkle, gifting me a brief glimmer of a smile. Vruksha is handsome when he smiles.
I grin, hissing once more. “I can do it too.”
“Yesss, you do it well.”

The worldbuilding was great and there was a bit of an intrigue with how the nagas happened to be on Earth. I think I have an idea but the book itself didn't go in depth. My guess is that we'll learn more with each book. We still don't know much about the Lurkers and what happened after the humans left the planet many centuries ago. I'm quite curious to know what's next.

I want to start this review off by saying this is a darker sci-fi romance. If you like your romances to fall on the sweeter side, like me I would suggest caution when reading this book. This book contains a dubcon and a nocon scene. I did not enjoy the romance in this book and I use that term very loosely to describe this story.

The FMC has no choice, but to be with the MMC from their first meeting onward. He forces her to be with him and declares she is his mate. It doesn’t matter to him if she wants to be with him or not. Per the MMC inner monologue she will get use to the situation. He bargains for her affection and at one point makes her promise to never leave him or try to escape in exchange for seeing her friend. To add to this he plays the hurt victim throughout this book because the FMC didn’t willing pick being with him, so he has to let her know at every chance how much this hurts him. He was just awful.

In most cases I would run for the hills after reading something like this, but I will say the overarching story for this book is interesting and mysterious. I’m really curious about the next book. The author introduced some other Naga characters I’m interested in. I’m hoping all of the series doesn’t swing this way as it is an interesting concept. Overall I give this 2 stars.

3 - 3.5 stars!

This is the first book in the Naga Brides series and features Vruksha and Gemma. It is set in a post-apocalyptic earth and the world building is incredibly unique and refreshing. Vruksha is snake/man hybrid and when Gemma and Daisy are traded for scientific material by their superiors, everything changes for both the women and the snake men on Earth.

Vruksha immediately sees Gemma and knows she is his and he will have her no matter the cost. What ensues after the initial meeting is a game of cat and mouse and when Vruksha catches Gemma, the two of them have a rough start to their relationship. Can Vruksha and Gemma learn from each other and teach each other what they need for a happy future? Will the other snake men come for Gemma?

The world and plot in here was so well written and the stage was set beautifully for future books. I know some reviewers had a problem with some of the dub/con in here but that's my jam so it didn't bother me. The smut was delicious. My main problem with this story was I felt like the characters weren't fully developed. Overall, if you like smutty Sci-fi romances with an unapologetic hero who wants nothing more than to worship the ground his woman walks on and a heroine that has bite, then I suggest reading this.

Dude! This was the most vile, intense, weird and oddly fascinating read I've read in a very long while.
So interesting, and intriguing, that I'm actually gonna open book 2. Despite my fears and the uncomfortable things I witnessed here, the journey this story takes you on, is just incredibly enthralling.

I must know the secret of Vruksha's and his peoples' origins. I HAVE to know what will happen to all involved. And I am curious about Daisy's Journey (Gemma's friend/Book2)...

The things Gemma endured here.. My Gawd. She's the MVP. Cause honey, I would have caved a long time ago, witnessing what she did and being thrust into this craziness. Not to mention being scared out of mind of Vruksha's behind.. IDK if I could handle him being my mate. Being his whole focal point for all that aggression and attention

This world just drags you in and holds you there, even when the things you witness are disconcerting or just down right disturbing.

If you're a sci-fi fan that loves your heroes with a lot of intensity, darkness, Alpha DNA x infinity, with a deeper mystery surrounding them; then I would recommend this read.

I opened an account just to share the contradictory emotions this book made me feel.

Pros:
1) The author developed a truly fascinating universe. The glimpses of backstory with excites your curiosity about the hows and whys of this world and its ultimate fate.

2) The stable of serpentine male love interests, the nagas, are absolutely squee-worthy in their diversity of appearances and powers. It's great fun to see the parallels between each guy and the snake they are based on, and I had a mindgasm imagining which type of heroine would be best matched to their respective tropes in future books.

3) The author has an engaging, dynamic style that keeps you reading despite any reserve you might have about the story evolution.

Cons:
1) The love story did nothing for me. I couldn't figure out why our heroine was attracted to our hero other than him being handsome, capable and emitting a sexy smell. Likewise, I couldn't figure why he was attracted to her other than her being a female, and her red hair. Likewise, it felt like the heroine would have learned to be happy with any naga, given time. I couldn't sense any real connection or intimacy between the two other than physical.

2) The character arcs of the hero and heroine were terrible imho. Let's break it down:

A) Vruksha starts as this super yandere, but not the endearing kind. His mind is a freight train on a single track of possessiveness, and his unwavering belief that she'll be his doesn't come off to me as titillating alpha confidence but off-putting creepiness. Who is our heroine or what was she doing before he met her? That's not really important, because all that matters is that she submits 'willingly' to him now. And if that had only been the starting point, if there had been an evolution after that, I could have moved past it - I was actually really intrigued about how the author would manage to evolve him into a hero the heroine would learn to love! But it didn't happen. Once we're introduced to a more vulnerable side of him, as one other reviewer put it, he came off as this immature, selfish jerk with abandonment issues. For me, this type of guy? Hard pass.

B) Gemma starts as a badass who recognizes the danger she's in yet firmly refuse to buy into Vruksha's crap, no matter his abs, his c*ck or whatever BS he's spouting at her. However, that doesn't last.

For all those reasons, I'm giving the book 3 stars. I think any story that can convince me to finish it even when I'm sure the dynamic between its main leads won't satisfy me is worthy of this, but at the same time, as with many books of this type, the premise is better than the delivery. I wouldn't recommend it unless you have it free through KU.

Viper is not your typical wholesome monster romance—and that’s both its strength and its stumbling block.

In this dark and brutal world, Naomi Lucas gives us Vruksha, a viper Naga who remains truly, unapologetically alien throughout the story. There’s no softening of his nature, no attempt to humanise his instincts for reader comfort. He’s a predator in every fiber of his being—territorial, obsessive, deeply instinct-driven—and it makes his character both fascinating and unnerving to follow. But he is also cute, and genuinely loving!

What stood out most to me was the layer of loneliness woven into his obsession.
Lucas doesn’t just create a monster; she builds a creature shaped by isolation, misunderstanding, and raw, unmet needs. It’s this emotional undercurrent that makes Vruksha compelling, even when his actions are harsh and unsettling.

On the other side, Gemma is a fighter.
Lucas portrays the psychological journey of captivity—fear, rage, survival, and reluctant adaptation—with a steady hand. Gemma doesn’t immediately fall into any unrealistic tropes, which I really appreciated.

Where the story faltered for me was in the relationship development.
Their bond feels forged through pressure and necessity, rather than a genuine emotional progression.
Fear doesn’t simply dissolve because he’s protective; desire doesn’t immediately bloom into trust.
Their connection is messy, complicated, and very survival-oriented—which felt authentic but, at times, left me emotionally disconnected from their romance.

By the end, I wasn’t sure whether the imbalance between them was an intentional feature of the story or something that needed a bit more exploration. Either way, it left me feeling intrigued but not fully satisfied.

Bottom Line:
Viper is a raw, uncomfortable monster romance that stays true to its alien nature—and for that, it deserves credit. It’s not a soft love story, and it’s not meant to be. If you like your monster romances primal, emotionally complex, and a little bit tragic, you’ll find a lot to appreciate here, even if it doesn’t fully hit every emotional note.

I’m curious enough about the bigger world Lucas is building that I’ll be picking up book two soon.

Yay for another monster alien romance series that's been sitting on my shelves for ages.

Plot is interesting - that ending had me on the edge of my seat! There's a bit of mystery, adventure, and action in this alongside the romance.
Characters are okay - Vruksha was a delightful possessive snakey guy whereas Gemma was straight up annoying. Other snakey guys are pretty unknown for the most part.
Writing - A little funky here and there to be completely honest.

I can't say I LOVED this one, but I found it to be entertaining! I mean reluctant human FMC aside.

Will be reading the next one because he calls his FMC a queen and we love that.

Awesomely really good book….review to come
I always enjoy Naomi Lucas' books!! They are so different from your cyborgs, and human female brides, mates and so forth. They are sexy as fukk and the males are alphas and their appearances are very different than your average sci-fi stories!
Wow, this is an interesting storyline, with naga species in desperate need of females to mate for so many reasons. Not only to procreate but to relieves the big bulging knot on their huge penis's!!
When Vruksha a beautiful gorgeous red scaled viper notices red haired Gemma from her spaceship, he is determined to have her!
As the naga's make a deal with the men from the spaceship, they make a trade, and Gemma goes to Vruksha and Daisy goes to the other naga human/serpent. As Gemma and Vruksha get totogether to know eache other, alot of unexpected dangers and situations interferes in their life. Gemma realizes alot about her mate and what happened to the earth's destruction of humans.
This is a well written fast paced story, with secondary characters that adds extra dimension to the storyline.
I will tell you that the sex scenes between Gemma and Vruksha are intensely hot and I can't see how some of the book reviews here claim it was forced!!???
Anyway, I will say I have so many unresolved questions about this storyline and will say this book ended on a cliffhanger/abruptly. I am going to read all of the books and hope Naomi Lucas adds Vruksha and Gemma in the other books.
I enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it!

I've liked some of Naomi's books but to be honest, its hit or miss for me. This was a big miss. The characters were real surface. The world building wasn't great. The Naga, was just so far off that this falls into some weird monster porn world AND I know most of her books are like that. For some reason I always go into them thinking.... this will be different. I lied to myself hahahahaha

HERE is a bit of a rant. AUTHORS need to stop jamming everything under romance when they are not romance. In particular, weird sub genres of erotic porn, like DARK ROMANCE that is simply rape porn, or SCI-FI ROMANCE when its just monster porn. A thriller can have romantic elements, a horror can too. I get why they do (label them as romance), they get scrubbed on amazon BUT I don't care. Its dishonest and I don't have time for it.

Well that was certainly...different. Snakemen. Huh, not sure how, but Naomi Lucas made them attractive! Super alpha, controlling, sweet, sexy, and they have some kind of “knotting” thing going on down below.

It’s a post-apocalypse Earth. Humans have fled to space, and there is a group of snake/men hybrids living on Earth. The world building is great, I loved discovering old Earth technology along with the h.

There comes a time when you need to question why you take book recommendations off of tiktok that seem sketchy. This is one of those times.
