Wild Guide 2011

The New Mexico Wilderness Alliance has just released its Wild Guide 2011. Supported by more than 5,000 members, the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance is a 5013 nonprofit dedicated to the protection and restoration of wilderness in New Mexico. An important part of our work is connecting people to wild public lands. The Wild Guide 2011 is intention is to show why we at the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance believe the Motto “Land of Enchantment” is an understatement. Sponsored by REI for the sixth year, the Wild Guide 2011 is filled with unique and varied information about the State of New Mexico. There are guided hikes to remote places and volunteer service projects into areas that few ever see. There are winners of a international wilderness Haiku contest. Contributions from local artists expressing thier love of the land. Definitions of envirnmental acroynms and a guide to understanding the complexties of envirnmental protection and articles for sometimes unexpected sources. A rancher’s perscective the importance of land preservation. Volunteer service projects are conducted across the state. Many venture into areas not normally open to the public, such as the San Andres Wildlife Perseve in the Middle of the Whitesands Missle Range. There are “Bio Blitzs” to be done down south, acequias to be cleaned up north, trail work to be done in the west, and wilderness stewardship to be undertaken in the central part of the state. Also art projects, story telling and nature journaling to enrich peoples outdoor experiance. Through hikes and volunteer service projects we hope to show the beauty, and increase awareness and support for the protection of New Mexico’s special landscapes, all the while having fun! The 2011 Wild Guide captures a wide variety of experiences while showcasing some of our state’s greatest wilderness resources.
