They are watching us from the stars, using our own people against us by moving them into positions of power to do their bidding. They are corrupting our children, preparing them to become their soldiers. These beings move towards a goal they hope has not been detected. But their actions are being noticed and as we start pulling threads of information, it is no longer a fact-finding mission, we are fighting for not only our own lives but the future of humankind. Who can we trust as these wolves in sheep's clothing stand among us?
Nick James is the author of books covering many genres. From ‘The Misplaced Man Trilogy’ and ‘The Victorian Vampire’ to ‘What Zombie Apocalypse’. He has now hit the ground running with science fiction titles; ‘The Time Travelling Tourist’ and his recent release ‘They Stand Among Us’, an alien invasion story. All are written in his easy-to-read style, with action and humor. He has countless other stories and sequels in the planning stages.
This book ended up being so much more then I was expecting. It definitely gives you a much darker version of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" vibe. The writing structure is done in such a way to make for a fast paced read.
This was a GoodReads giveaway win of a Kindle ebook.
The killings fall on you like a ton of bricks and never lets up. Not really what I was looking for. There is the mystery of what this organization's end goal, but the leadership just seems to believe they can cover up anything and everything. Why not just kill the chief investigator earlier in the story and be done with her? Well, that would cut too deeply into the opportunity to kill others.
I was increasing disturbed by the use of the term "clone", and the author did later in the story attempt to explain it away, but I still felt it silly. And there is that Clark Kent is Superman paradox. How can you not see the similarities of your enemy?
I assume it to be intentional, but the stereotypes did not strike me as funny until after I finished the story. Just a bit too subtle for effect if indeed it was intended to add a humorous element.
The cliffhanger sci-fi element at the end did not work for me.
This book is book #1 of a series. I don't have any compulsion to continue the series.
This book was an easy read . The author kept interest c flowing to the end. This book raises the abilities sciences can produce and hopefully is used in a good way. Not the way it was used in the persons in this book. Makes one think of science progression and where it will lead if controlled by evil. Just an FYI. The person editing missed many words that didn't belong in a sentence.
I got into Nick James by accident and what a great accident it was,. I have read all his books now and this one is the best of the bunch, (not that any of them are rubbish, they are definitely not) it's got everything you could want and more, can't wait for the follow up , might have to read it again
Far reaching conspiracy expectant mothers dying: This is a strong conspiracy story that might leave you wondering until towards the end. Expectant mothers are dying at higher than normal rates, and many different characters ranging from medical professionals to ex-military to FBI agents are trying to put together the pieces. There is more going on than any of these separate characters know. There are many characters and the stakes are very high. I personally felt a great loss at the brutal shooting of two characters in their home. To me, that scene was hard to continue through. There's sparse details of a secretive group meeting with heavy physical security, but strangely, the cameras are turned off, and the security are told not to look at the guests, but why?
On to the narration: can I give more than 5 stars? I think I'm going to find a way to fan mail this narrator because this was honestly so great. Despite there being so many characters, the narrator delivers unique voices for every named character. Some of these voices, I'm baffled that it was one person delivering all of it. I will definitely be looking for more titles performed by this awesome narrator.
If you like conspiracy thriller mystery this might be for you. Despite the great narration I think I would have been able to keep better track of characters from reading versus listening.
This is an interestingly-thought-through Alien SciFi Action Drama, for which I give a 5-star Rating due to its originality and novel ending; the story itself was worthy of 3-4-stars, being Fair-to-Good; amusing — but not great.
Beware that there is LOTS of shoot-‘em-up carnage throughout this story, and some unbelievable conniving throughout the USA by a large number of nearly identical, tall male clones that nobody notices. These people (? are they human ?) infiltrate all of the US Gov’t, Police agencies, “normal” neighborhood households, and so on, and seemingly get away with whatever crimes they choose to commit … can “higher ups” really insulate such actions without a problem?!?
Despite all of the gun fire (and alcohol ingestion also seems to be a common theme!) — I’ll throw give a nod of approval to The Author for being brave and willing enough to kill off both good and bad guys, so The Reader never really knows what’s going to happen on the next page.
So, overall — YES — go read this book from cover to cover; and be ready to willingly suspend disbelief at some of the kinda strange mini-plots.
There is much here that feels a little close to home and current circumstances to feel like escapist reading. Mr. James has managed to keep me reading when I really should be doing work.
