Padre Pio: Stories and Memories of My Mentor and Friend

Rate this book
This colorful memoir offers a rare, up-close glimpse of the life and personality of St. Pio of Pietrelcina, the beloved Italian monk who was blessed with extraordinary gifts. The late Fr. Amorth—well-known as an exorcist —enjoyed over two decades of a close friendship with the holy, quirky Padre Pio, whom he considered his spiritual father. Adding his own personal experience to a foundation of biographical research, Amorth gives an entertaining and illuminating account of perhaps one of the best-known saints of the twentieth century. In this book, we span from Padre Pio''s childhood—where he cured himself of a disease by wolfing down all his mother''s fried bell peppers—to his miracle-filled priesthood, to his Italian gift for mimicry, humor, and storytelling. Rather than a plaster image of a saint, this book is a portrait of a fully human kind of holiness, proof that even the most astonishing graces can be lived out with simplicity and joy.

Italian Roman Catholic priest and the senior exorcist of the Diocese of Rome.

Amorth authored two books specifically on exorcism. The publications marked a defining moment in literary history, being the first public documents to treat this subject.
The two books An Exorcist Tells His Story and An Exorcist: More Stories are not official Roman Catholic documents, rather personal accounts of his office as Exorcist. The books use witness accounts and personal experience as evidence.

In case anyone doesn’t know, Padre Pio was an Italian priest who became famous for a variety of supernatural claims surrounding him. Most famously he was said to bear the stigmata or the supernatural manifestation of the wounds of Christ for most of his life. In addition to that were claims that he could read souls, levitate, prophecy, cast out demons, and more. Though the Church was initially skeptical of his claims, they ultimately recognized him as a Saint, and he’s become one of the most popular saints among the faithful these days.

This book isn’t a detailed biography though it does cover the entire course of Padre Pio’s life. Rather, it’s more of a fond remembrance by a priest who spent a fair amount of time with the Saint. If you’re looking for a scholarly treatment of Pio’s life, there are better books for you. That’s doubly true if you’re looking for a work that balances faith and skepticism surrounding the claims made of Pio. But if you’re looking for something of an insider’s perspective from someone well acquainted with the Padre, this would serve you well. It’s short enough to read in a single sitting yet reasonably detailed on some matters, though it’s much more focused on Padre Pio’s spirituality than on biographical details or a deep investigation into source material.

“I am setting aside for you an even more beautiful crown, if you are able to fight against that giant. He will keep attacking you, but be fearless and fight him. I will always be near you so that you may always succeed in knocking him down…” These words form part of a mystical message received by Padre Pio from our Blessed Mother shortly before he entered religious life as a Capuchin Friar.
Spiritual battle against the devil seemed to characterise the life of St Pius of Pietrelcina, fondly known in life as Padre Pio.
This biography by the renowned exorcist of the Diocese of Rome, Fr Gabriele Amorth, who died in 2016, is a fascinating read for anyone who would like to know more about the life of a saint who experienced such extraordinary events.
The book is filled with personal and engaging anecdotes by the author who witnessed so much of Padre Pio’s life up close.
Any biography of a saint could easily become the work of flattery or legend, yet this first-hand account by a friend of Padre Pio is approached in a rigorous and compelling way that avoids these pitfalls.
Living in a rationalistic age, as Padre Pio did, his life stood out as one that involved incredible things; yet at the heart of it we find a humble man who desired the life of holiness of a priest; he allowed himself to be the channel of many graces and accomplished so much in the years God gave him.
We can think of the success of the building of his children’s hospital in Southern Italy where there were few resources and much need.
The book is quite revealing in its treatment of one of the most peculiar graces experienced by the saint; receiving the crucifixion wounds of our Lord; known as the stigmata.
Padre Pio received these wounds as a young priest and they remained throughout the whole of his life; in his hands, feet, and side.
He was the object of much scepticism and scorn; rightly his superiors desired to establish the authenticity of such claims, something that added much suffering to the life of this exceptional religious.
“I am a mystery to myself,” was a comment he made at the end of his life. The celebration of his Mass would take some hours as he entered ecstasy; he found in this moment a real union with God; in the celebration of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass he was able to appreciate Calvary in a deep and personal way.
Fr Amorth comments, “Some have called Padre Pio’s Mass ‘an authentic supernatural spectacle.’ There was certainly nothing theatrical about it… There is no doubt that Padre Pio was reliving the Passion of Jesus.”
Padre Pio wrote on the prayer card for his first Mass: “Jesus, my breath and my life, how I tremble today as I lift you up in a mystery of love; together with you, may I be for the world: way, truth, life, and through you, holy priest, perfect victim.”

I was quite small when Padre Pio was quite old, and although I have heard his name often, I did not know much about him. Hence I decided to read this book whose author claimed Padre Pio as a mentor and a friend. A quick read at only 149 pages, the book focuses mostly on detailing what the Padre’s life was like during his ministry. It was not easy for Padre Pio; the book describes the trials he had, most resulting from him having the stigmata.

The way Padre Pio was treated by the Church is quite disturbing. At different times during his ministry, the Church frequently placed restraints on what he could and could not do. It appears the patriarchy was skeptical about the authenticity of his stigmata and was further troubled by the thousands of people who sought the sacrament of Confession or participation in masses said by Padre Pio. The patriarchy of the Church were no doubt threatened by this and investigated him more than once, banned him at times from hearing confessions, and placed all types of limitations on him over the years, including putting so many rules, it was as if the Padre were imprisoned.

Through all of this skepticism along with the physical pain Padre Pio endured, he humbly obeyed everything he was told to do, without complaint or argument.
Even though it is difficult to read about the way he was treated by the Church, I found the book compelling to read.

I picked up this book because I am going on a pilgrimage to Rome and other nearby Holy sites, and it will include a stop at San Giovanni Rotondo, the home of Padre Pio. I knew almost nothing about him, so I wanted to acquaint myself.

This was a good book for that purpose. Written by a priest who knew him well, it has a very personal feel. It doesn't delve too deeply into theological discussions about the man, nor into the ins and outs of periods of controversy in his life. It just gives a nice overview of the story of his life and the impact he had on many.

If I wanted to delve deeply into this man, I might choose some of the more scholarly books on the market. But for my purposes, this was perfect.

This book is pretty wild. I enjoyed learning about the life of this extremely influential man. His story is actually super challenging, I was forced into the position to make a decision: I needed to decide if this guy was a crazy man or I needed to radically adjust my understanding of suffering and God’s role in it. Padre Pío was a man who lived in the late 1800s to early 1900s and bore the stigmata (the wounds of Christ) physically on his hands, feet, and side for over 40 years. He was beloved, but not without controversy, and I’m left feeling like I want to learn more about him because I’m still undecided on what I think of his life.

This was a short book in which Fr. Amorth relayed his interactions with St. Padre Pio and a short biography of him. It was interesting in that it was a closer look into the sufferings of St. Pio by someone who knew him.
The only downside is that the binding was terrible. The cover appeared to have been glued on and not carefully or neatly. I purchased four books, three for gifts and they were all like that. Mine broke away during the reading. I am not used to this shoddy of work from Ignatius. I emailed them about it two weeks ago and did not get a response.

As a devout Catholic and a "spiritual daughter" of St. Padre Pio, I am always looking for more information, more stories about this beloved 20th century saint. I also know the reputation of Fr. Gabriele Amorth, his work as an exorcist for the Church, but I did not know that he knew Padre Pio, and was a friend. So, I knew this memoir was a must-read for me. It is beautifully rendered, with clear, concise stories that portray the beautiful, holy man that Padre Pio was. This is a great addition to my collection of Padre Pio books.

Very interesting story of the hardships he endured

This book is filled with a wealth of information about Padre Pio, and defiently focuses in n the persecution he endured. However, the book reads like an um edited edition. Kijf like someone typed it all out but didn't go back to read. The style of writings drops comments that seem like they should be removed.

All and all am interesting look at Pio.

This is the first book I've read about St. Padre Pio - and it did not disappoint. Taken from documents and from personal interactions with Padre Pio, this small book both compresses the events of his life and expands the details of it. Fascinating read - and disturbing, in a good but scary way in terms of confronting one's own faith and hypocrisy. Well worth the time and contemplation.

Short yet sweet book about Padre Pio by a personal friend of his. By the end you will definitely feel like you knew the Padre yourself and his sense of humour. Gets to the heart of the story of this incredibly pious man with a life plagued by illness, suppression by the Church and fights with the devil.

This was a eye opener to me about St. Padre Pio. I knew very little about this saintly man, but it inspired me to read more about him. The authenticity of the writing of this book, helped me grasp how Padre Pio was an ordinary man with many, many graces given to him by God, and he used those graces to help others.

What a beautiful book. So glad I chose this for my audible credit so that I can revisit time and time again. Not only does it make a difference to hear a first person account about the great saint from his dear friend but it’s also a different level when the friend is a holy and humble exorcist. Best bio of Padre Pio ever!

It is a great introduction to learning about Padre Pio. It does not go into depth into his life, but is an overview of his life from the point of view of Fr. Amorth. If you want to learn more about Padre Pio this is a great short book to get started. If you are looking for a detailed biography this may not be the right book for you.

This was a book written with the assumption that the reader was already familiar with the details of Padre Pio’s life. There were so many questions that I have which remained unanswered; therefore I will be reading more books by and about this mysterious and amazing man.
