Chuck’s a guaranteed good time, and Lucius is a forever guy. Can they come to terms with their past to embrace the future?
Hell-raiser, getaway driver, and occasional knight in tarnished armor Chuck Calder has never had any illusions about being a serious boyfriend. He may not be a good guy, but at least as part of Josh Salinger’s crew of upscale thieves and cons, he can feel good about his job. Right now, his job is Lucius Broadstone. Lucius is a blueblood with a brutal past. He uses his fortune and contacts to help people trying to escape abuse, but someone is doing everything they can to stop him. He needs the kind of help only the Salingers can provide. Besides, he hasn’t forgotten the last time he and Chuck Calder collided. The team's good ol’ boy and good luck charm is a blue-collar handful, but he is genuinely kind. He takes Lucius's mission seriously, and Lucius has never had that before. In spite of Chuck's reluctance to admit he’s a nice guy, Lucius wants to know him better. Chuck’s a guaranteed good time, and Lucius is a forever guy. Can Chuck come to terms with his past and embrace the future Lucius is offering? Or is Good Luck Chuck destined to be driving off into the sunset alone forever?
Amy Lane dodges an EDJ, mothers four children, and writes the occasional book. She, her brood, and her beloved mate, Mack, live in a crumbling mortgage in Citrus Heights, California, which is riddled with spiders, cats, and more than its share of fancy and weirdness. Feel free to visit her at www.greenshill.com orwww.writerslane.blogspot.com, where she will ride the buzz of receiving your e-mail until her head swells and she can no longer leave the house.
It took me five days to finish this book, partly because I had a very busy weekend, but also because — and I feel bad for saying it — this was not as light and exciting as the previous books, and the main plot dealt with some heavy topics I wasn’t really in the mood for atm:
Other than that, I enjoyed it very much. Chuck and Lucius were so good together. 😍 I loved the humor and all the feminist themes in this, as always, and also that extra chapter gave me a much-needed, but still too-small, dose of Julia-Felix-Danny friendship (I love this trio the most!). I can’t wait to continue this series. ❤️ I have a feeling that Josh’s book will be next… 🙏
The third book in the series, and I still liked the first one the most.
I like all these characters very much, they all form such an unusual, but very close group. I'm glad Lucius saw it and was really looking for it. And also that he became part of this group so easily. I like how this family can easily accept new members, giving them what they need.
Chuck and Lucius make a perfectly matched pair, although probably not as interesting as the main characters of the two previous books. They are both tortured heroes. But sometimes I thought Lucius had a bit of an underdeveloped personality. Sometimes I missed something about him. Although he made a good partner for Chuck.
Likewise, I wish they had a little more time to get to know each other well and develop their relationship. Though I can't deny that Chuck and Lucius had an unexpectedly many serious conversations about what is important to them. To my surprise, there were more of these conversations than scenes filled with passion. And that's another thing that surprised me, there were surprisingly few sex scenes. In fact, there is only one that is fully developed as far as I remember.
But I missed the con the most. I really waited for our well-rounded group of theft specialists to carry out some complicated plan. Unfortunately, in vain. They don't do anything like that in this book. And that's what I missed the most.
I really like all these characters so I will definitely read more books in this series.
Tropes: opposites attract, reluctant MC, posterboy/marginal, business partners, found family
Positives: ~ a good change of scenery and enjoyable action/crime plot. This one moves away from the heist/caper into a more traditional crime genre.
Negatives: ~ I'll admit I'm not completely convinced they're the most solid romantic pair, and the romance plot is weaker in this than in the first two
This is the 3rd book in the series. It has a bit of everything. Suspense, action, humor, and heart. I love all of the characters in this series. They are wonderfully written, but I have to say, I have had a soft spot for Chuck since the beginning. I loved getting more of his story. One of my favorite parts was toward the end. I won't say anything more so I don't give any spoilers away.
Lucius is a wonderful addition to the team. He brings in more heart and soul. He is the perfect person for Chuck. Lucius does so much for everybody and he works hard to keep people safe. Chuck needs that just as much as Lucius needs someone like Chuck in his life.
Wonderful read and I would very much recommend it and the first two books as well. I'm ready for another one!
It's getting better, don't get me wrong. There is something lacking, like the plot is a jumbled bag of words, sentences and unconnected paragraphs that AL dumped on a page. There is talk about abuse but no real descriptions. It acknowledges male rape which is excellent (men getting raped is thing whether people agree or not. There isn't enough information because men are ashamed to admit it happens) There are corrupt law enforcement, Senators doing bad things and men in general being douchecanoes. It was like the bag guys were cookie cutter types, that AL was clicking a box with each description.
We learn more about Good Luck Chuck and how he made it to the Merry Men of Thieves. He isn't like Grace or Danny or Felix. He's the driver and enjoys being behind the wheel. He had a previous love named "Car Car" who pops up at the end and will probably be hooking up with Torrence the reporter. Luscious Lucius has a problem still with industrial theft and now his company is jeopardy again. But this time, it threatens his secret women's shelter. He still has a thing for Chuck and shyly hits on him.
The best part of the book is when the others are giving Chuck crap for his abysmal flirting. He has game but its not a long con type. He knows how to get a guy into bed but not much else once the sun comes up. It's entertaining in a way but also depressing about the issue with Josh and the teams attempt to incorporate him with the plans.
The Driver is another fantastic entry in The Long Con series. I like to classify it into what I call the Ocean’s Eleven genre: it has action, adventure, romance, humor, and thrills. There’s Chuck evading the police while driving 90 mph on downtown city streets, Grace crawling through vents, Danny masterminding, Molly killing it undercover, loads of bad guys, lots of feels, and perhaps best of all – the greatest found family I’ve encountered in MM romance. And sadly, we have Josh – the twenty-one-year-old heart of the operation – battling leukemia.
This is Chuck Calder and Lucius Broadstone’s love story, wrapped around a plot to save Lucius’ company from sabotage, and stop the security of his abused women’s shelter from being compromised, putting the residents in grave danger. We know Chuck as a retired bank robber and getaway driver extraordinaire. He was welcomed into the family through his friendship with Josh and because of his “special skills”. Lucius we met in The Muscle as a thirty-year-old billionaire and cutting-edge tech company owner.
While working the job, Chuck and Lucius grow closer. They had already shared a scorching kiss in The Muscle and while the physical attraction is strong, Chuck knows he’s a criminal and feels unworthy of Lucius. He’s spent his life convincing everyone of his Good Time Charlie persona where nothing bothers him. But his true self wants to set down roots like Hunter and Grace. He’s always wanted love but never had it until now. He’s afraid to be forthcoming about his darkest secret, though, because he badly wants Lucius to see the good in him, not just the bad. On his end, Lucius has been lonely since childhood with no one he could trust or confide in. He desperately wants someone he can relax with, someone with whom he can let go of his fears, anger, and bitterness. He’s never had a man to hold him through the pain, but now he’s found that in Chuck and he’s not going to let go.
The action we’ve come to expect lets loose in the aptly named chapter, Let the Games Begin. There is so much corruption and crime among the plethora of bad men that we never know quite how the pieces are going to go together. Caraway, Lucius' shelter, is what drives the Salinger crew to turn their crime into a good purpose. It is a safe, healing place for women, children, and the occasional young man who have possibly never known peace or security. Somehow, the shelter has been infiltrated by a mole.
This is a critical job, one that might save lives. All the players are involved, even Josh. The core group is nine strong with others being collected along the way like a dragon hoarding its treasure. Only two – Julia and Josh – are related by blood, but this is the closest, most loving, supportive, heartwarming family I’ve come across. Felix welcomes Lucius into the fold, telling him in a little speech that made my eyes sting, that he is no longer alone in the world and is expected to be part of the family. We know he’ll fit in well because of his love of cookies.
This is an outstanding series. The Driver has been among my most anticipated books recently and I can’t wait to find out what happens next. Josh’s story, perhaps? I just can’t get enough of this crew of heroic outlaws.

The Long Con Gang is back and it’s time for getaway driver Chuck to fall in love. I loved this book. I love the Long Con Family almost more than I love my family. After all this gang never convinced me to eat Sugar Twin, or Baker’s chocolate. This book is an exciting read that continues to flesh out the team’s characters, and team member Chuck gets his own love story. Granted, we saw this love story introduced in the last L.C. book, it’s nice to see how Chuck gets his happy ending. There is plenty of suspense as the gang tries to figure out who is sabotaging Lucius Broadstone’s company. I loved everything about this book, I definitely have fallen a little bit more in love with every member of the gang, and now Lucius Broadstone has been added to the roster. I would definitely recommend this as an excellent book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Every member of Josh Salinger's crew-turned-family has a troubled past and a heart of gold. Chuck Calder is no exception. We learn more about Chuck's past this time around, and we see Chuck reunited with the lovable and wealthy Lucius Broadstone. These two shared an amazing kiss on a previous op, and their chemistry is off the charts. Lucius comes to the team who helped him in the past, when he realizes that his business and the shelter that business funds, are under attack. Lucius wants to protect his company, and he is desperate to keep the abuse victims who depend on him safe from the powerful men who've hurt them. This is an emotional book that shows just how caring and tough Josh and each member of his team are. These people are the ones I'd want in my corner in a bad situation. Lucius is both grateful and in awe of them. His feelings for Chuck are already strong coming into this story, and he just hopes that Chuck will let go of his reservations long enough to give them a real chance. Chuck has let his past hold him back, and he is terrified to believe that Lucius won't be scared away because of that past. I love Chuck and Lucius! They can't hide their feelings, and the rest of the team is supportive and encouraging throughout this adventure. The bad guys here are easy to hate, and each time one is brought down, it's impossible not to feel a bloodthirsty satisfaction. It's wonderful to revisit all the characters, both the existing couples and the team members still waiting for love. I hope each one finds happiness, and I plan on being here for every story. This is a fantastic series, and I recommend it to fans of action adventure, found family, and sexy romance. I can't wait for the next installment!
This is the third book in Amy Lane’s “Long Con Adventures”. We get Charles “Chuck” Calder’s book, all his back story, and experience first hand the excitement/horror of driving a getaway vehicle. His significant other is Lucius Broadstone, the millionaire company owner, whom we met in the last book “The Muscle”. Lucius is still having problems with his company, and repeated sabotage attempts on his software, leaving a safe house for battered spouses at risk.
Tha Salinger crew once again rallies to help the vulnerable, solve a mystery, and take down a corrupt ring of politicians.
What I liked about this story is the mystery that needs solving. Amy’s crafty writing left me guessing all the way up to the reveal of who the culprit was.
I also enjoyed Chuck’s NASCAR style driving while trying to escape dangerous situations. I laughed out loud at the visual of Lucius grabbing the “Praise Jesus” bar, while Grace yells, “We’re all gonna die!” from the back seat. For me, that was a fun read!
Lucius is very kind, sweet, and patient with Chuck. Chuck has baggage from his past he needs to come to terms with, and realize he IS deserving of love, that he IS more than a good time, and CAN be valued as a long term, romantic partner.
The continuous theme of Amy Lane’s books is family- family that is both found and bonded by blood. If you enjoy reading books about family pulling together to help the underdog, hurt/comfort, and low angst type books, The Driver is a must read.
While there is some significant repetition that a tighter edit would have caught, I loved this novel as much as any of the others, particularly when Charlie got to do his thing. I admire Lane's ability to write series about eclectic groups that apparently feed my brain. :)
What I Think: There’s no doubt this is a race. I mean, it’s right there in the name. So, let’s cruise. I was so glad that I already liked Lucius. His earnest desire to do the right thing earned him a place at the Salinger table and in my heart. Otherwise, I would have fallen so hard and fast, there would be plenty of ouching as he comes with the burden of a protector. Watching this found family open up once more to share their love when Lucius would have broken just had me craving a clan for me.
Then I began to see Chuck in a different light. Do allow me one spoiler – Chuck is a ginger. Please, wait while I finish screaming into my pillow. Okay. I’m saner now. People do hide a lot under their facades (which I’m getting used to with the How to get away with Murder marathon I’m doing), but I never would have guessed what lay under that cool, masculine exterior. The heart I found made me want to spoil him (yes, Julia. I totally get you), and smack him at the same time. How is it that the most worthy people always believe they’re the most dispensable? But I didn’t have time to dwell on that as gears changed and the pace increased to a marathon with action that has my heart in my mouth while wanting to join these warriors and Amazons that are Lucius’ shield.
The trauma had me flinching as some of it struck too close to home. The self-forgiveness had the waterworks threatening as love heals, soothes, and lovemaking became a ritual of cleansing and rebirth. But I didn’t have time for that either because it became a mad dash of legendary driving, perfect timing, subterfuge, and rescue. And, at this point, I can’t get The Score’s ‘Legend’ out of my mind. Mme. Amy even managed, splendiferously so, to match driving to sex and it didn’t make me want to barf like all the usual double entendres. Imagine that!
When revenge really starts, it’s a sprint, so let’s hustle people! I was breathless, exhilarated, and how is this not a movie? Because revenge served cold and public is how it should be done. My niaughter (niece + daughter + nutter) physically jumped when I barked “Yesss!” oh so fervently. Only for her to roll to her side with laughter. No respect. This one.
Verdict? A thrilling tale that strips to the core just as it heals and shows the treasure that is impossible, love!
I really enjoyed The Driver, which on one had is not a surprise as I enjoy most Amy Lane books, but sometimes book three in series can be a let down. This was not the case here. One thing I was really impressed with is how all the characters in this series have such different, but well developed personalities. They are each such a pleasure to read about. Although, like most Amy Lane books, at some point these characters really grab you in the feels. For me, and I imagine most, it will be Chuck that gets to you here, thought Lucius has his own depth and past that has made him who he is as a man. The chase scenes were fun...think Fast and Furious but perhaps with more believable (maybe?) chase scenes. Amy Lane also did a great job at creating a believable con that stumps the reader until close to the end (think Leverage tv series) and hats off to her as that must take some serious mental gymnastics to plot. I have loved Chuck since the first book and always found him to be a solid stand up guy, particularly in a crisis. What's important here is that he doesn't see himself as he is and that is something he has to overcome before he can believe in a relationship with Lucius. Honestly though, I enjoyed the con aspect and I enjoyed the romance but my favorites thing about this book and this series are the group of cons and the family they are forming. Their interactions together alone make this book worth reading. I definitely recommend it and am looking forward to listening to it in audio when it comes out.
Highly enjoyable, action-packed adventure with a bonus of an unlikely couple that totally works. Chuck, the driver for the Salinger group, finally meets his man, Lucius Broadstone, a corporate exec, owner of manufacturing corp. and of a hidden location that provides a safe space for women and men who have been abused by their partners--not just any victims, but those who are married to cops, politicians, influential wealthy men who thrive on beating those lesser than themselves. I had a personal work-related experience with a very similar victim once upon a time and I think of her often when I read something like this. She died young, found dead in her bathtub, mysteriously. Perhaps that's why this touched my heart so much, but I truly enjoyed the story.
The underlying plot was complex and intriguing and got more dangerous and deadly as the story progressed. Add to that, this cast of characters is growing on me and Josh, the son of the principal characters in The Mastermind is still deathly ill from leukemia. I imagine this will be resolved at some future point but it is ongoing in this book.
Chuck and Lucius didn't get much on-page between-the-sheets time, but they did get time for their relationship to develop and Chuck was able to make peace with his past. All in all, a very exciting entry to this series lineup. I look forward to more.
Yeah I'm loving this series. I love the charm of all these "criminals." They're all such Robin Hood's with a strong sense of righteous justice needing to be dealt out to horrible people. (You know putting fresh fish in someone's car to rot is just the perfect type of evil.) I love Chuck and Lucius. They're great together and give each other space for each of their own insecurities. Chuck's not used to people wanting to keep him around while Lucius isn't used to a the idea of having a family and people who care about you.
I love the found family that this group is and their particular brand of justice just makes me smile. Lucius has trouble at both ends at the moment. Someone's attacking his company and at the same time making attacks on the women's shelter that he'd thought he'd kept hidden. His secret passion project to give battered women a way out and a safe place to heal before helping them find new lives is under threat and Chuck and the rest of the Salinger crew were the only place he could think to turn. Of course they're up for the challenge and giddy about having something to focus on that gives them all an outlet to not always just being worried about Josh and his illness.
These books just fly by, are such fun, and just suck me right in. I'm truly loving this series.
In this newest installment of the Long Con series, It’s Chuck’s turn to find love, with Lucius, whom he shared quite the kiss with in the last book. Of course there is more than meets the eye when it comes to these two. I had a blast navigating the waters of their relationship with them as well as the hijinks with the Salinger gang. This found family just keeps growing!
Part of the joy in these stories is getting to revisit our couples from before. We catch up with Josh, my Josh who continues to break my heart and whose story and HEA I need more than life right now. And of course, par for the course of this series, there is action, humor, emotion, and oh, wow, yes, you fall even more in love with this motley crew. Yes, two broken men that are healed by family and by each other, plus, as always, more of these cons with hearts of gold.
So yes, Amy Lane has done it again. The narration, dialogue, character development, all of it is stellar. Whether I’m cracking up and Grace’s wit, the banter between Hunter and Chuck, smiling at Chuck and Lucius finding their way together, or any of the other interactions, I’m falling in love. Falling in love with these characters, this book, this series. Each book in this series better than the last, and as always, I can’t wait to see what’s next.
4.5 stars - Another great installment in a fabulous series. The "family" continues to help fix situations that are unfair or unjust, and this time it's not just dangerous but complicated too. One of their own, Lucius Broadstone, is under attack, and it's not just his business but his secret endeavor too. While the team by necessity is split by location and focus, the intrigue and action continue at top speed, literally in some instances. The team it seems will do almost anything to protect Lucius's work, and they get quite inventive in doing so. (I love the scene on the front steps of his residence.) The romance developing between Lucius and Chuck is sexy and sweet, and that last part really perplexes Chuck for quite a while. Fortunately for him, he has family to help him see what everyone else easily sees. I am loving this series and cannot wait for the next book.
IF you are looking for a book that is slow-paced and full of fluff... look elsewhere! *grin*
This was the longest of the three books in this series because it covers so much territory and let's just say the "feelings" will hit you in the gut and on occasion have you laughing out loud!
Chuck is the man that we all want but aren't brave enough to go after, but it would appear that Lucius is! Chuck is fascinating, I mean seriously... FASCINATING! Ms. Lane must have a spreadsheet to keep track of all of Chuck's capabilities and personal attachments! Lucius has been alone for far too long and is ready to be brought into the Dormer-Salinger crew if only he can get Charles to see how perfect they will be together... forever... as a team... saving the world!
This series has been a win for me and I look forward to the next book... whenever it gets here... *headdesk*
Another strong entry in what is becoming my favorite Amy Lane series. Lucius needs the Salinger family's help to protect his company and the domestic abuse shelter hidden on the property. He also can't forget the kiss Chuck planted on him as a distraction during a con in the last book. I adore Chuck and want one of my very own. Lucius is wonderfully patient and persistent in trying to get Chuck to see that he is more than just a Good Luck Charlie. The way the Salinger family adopts Lucius, regardless of what happens wtih Chuck, really pulls at the heartstrings. It was nice to see Lucius embrace, and even thrive, in the crazy. All-in-all, an action-filled sweet romance. I can't wait for the next one!
This newest book in the Long Con series was a delight to read. I thoroughly enjoyed Chuck and Lucius's story. It was heartbreaking and sweet, funny and exciting.
The heist set at Lucius's place was meticulously planned and the cast of characters each had a role.
Amy's style of writing is a delight to the senses and to the story. I loved how Lucius was able to find a family with the Salinger crew and how Chuck was able to find forgiveness in himself.
And then there's all the action and humour you'd come to expect in an Amy book. I giggled as I read the book, enjoying the byplay of the characters and the often silly things they made the bad guys do.
My initial thoughts are that I like how this story especially more than the second book. The beginning started with a bit of Chuck's criminal background and how he connected with Josh's crew. As always I love the crew interaction. The crew interaction and playing out of the romance is what keeps me going back to this series and has little to do with solving the mystery. But even the mystery was interesting and played out bit by bit without it feeling stretched out and an unbelievable rush to solve. Every member had a part to play and they did it. I'm looking forward to the next one and holding out hope about Josh.
I was offered an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
What takes a Crew’s mind off the trouble happening at home? A high stakes job to save not only a friend’s company, but also the shelter it supports!
True to the title and the role of it’s lead character, The Driver is a high octane ride of a man who has always been running. The luscious billionaire Lucius Broadstone we met in The Driver returns. That moment? You know what moment. Yeah we get to see if that was a truth used for the job.
Be ready to be raked over the coals though, hurt people helping people find safety and people who are determined to possess the objects of their abuse don’t mix well.
Lucious's introduction in The Muscle didn't impress me much, and honestly, he was still not very exciting in himself in this book, but he turned out to be just a really sweet man in this book. Chuck was the one who was the absolute star of this book.
I also really enjoyed the vignette at the end, revealing the secret left unrevealed in The Mastermind.
This is the third book in The Long Con series. This is a fabulous book. I have really enjoyed this series as it shows a good side to con men and their teams. It is always great to see some of the previous characters from the series and in this book, you get to see them a lot, which I love. As in the previous books, this book has great character development and a wonderful pace with lots of car chases. I feel this book can be read as a stand-alone book, but the series is excellent, so I would also recommend reading them all.
This book hooked me immediately! There's plenty of fast paced action and adventure, hilarious hijinks and the found family aspect was so good. It's time for Chuck's HEA and while it took some hard work it was absolutely worth it. He's never really felt worthy of love and is terrified his past will scare Lucius off so he doesn't bother pursuing him in spite of the sizzling chemistry between them. Lucius was so caring and protective of Chuck and he so desperately needs someone like that in his corner.
I enjoyed the first book in this series, but my disappointment continues with both book 2 and 3 in this series. This story was slow, the chemistry between the two main characters was weak and lacked depth . The author inundates the reader with so many characters in the story, it’s a mess. Rather than developing a stronger story, the pages were filled with one character’s constant self talk over and over again. I don’t see me reading book 4 of this series, since this one was so tedious.
Putting this aside for now, I will try again later. I want to follow the series and find out what happens to Josh anyway, but the series is becoming ludicrously complex and every is super special and the plot does not make sense at all to me, where industrial espionage is mixed up with a secret women's shelter getting outed (for extra leverage). Not feeling Lucius either.
I am salty. Also, it made it through a whole editing department, and nobody caught "expresso"? Otherwise, it was a romp. Fuck a bunch of abusive fascists.
The action continues! Lucius and the delightful getaway driver, Good Luck Chuck, are adorably grumpy together. Lucious’s company is still under attack and the Salinger crew comes together to help him out. The villains keep popping up like whack-a-moles while Chuck and Lucius struggle to find some time alone. I can’t wait for more!
Chuck has been “Good Time Chuck” for years hiding his inner turmoil and insecurities. Lucius is struggling to save his company and protect victims of abuse. I loved the way the two of them danced around each other and slowly figured out what the other means to them. With the help of the Salinger gang, the two save Lucius’ company, the safe houses and each other.
Each of the books in this series are excellent, only as Amy Lane’s writing can be! They are very hard to put down, and I’m very much looking forward to the next book in the series. I often find myself re-reading paragraphs or pages just to enjoy them again. That doesn’t happen often.
