Elijah: An Amish Story of Crime and Romance

Rate this book
He’s Amish. She’s not. Each is looking for a change. What happens when God brings them together?

Elijah Troyer is eighteen years old when he decides to go on a delayed Rumspringa, an Amish tradition when adolescents venture out into the world to decide whether they want to continue their life in the Amish culture or leave for the ways of the world. He has only been in the city for a month when his life suddenly takes a strange twist.

Eve Campbell is a young woman in trouble with crime lords, and they will do anything to stop her from talking. After a chance encounter, Elijah is drawn into Eve’s world at the same time she is drawn into his heart. He is determined to help Eve escape from the grips of her past, but his Amish upbringing has not prepared him for the dangers he encounters as he tries to pull Eve from her chaotic world and into his peaceful one.

Will Elijah choose to return to the safety of his family, or will the ways of the world sink their hooks into him? Do Elijah and Eve have a chance at a future together? Find out in this action-packed standalone novel.

Now an Amazon bestselling author, Sylvia Price is an author of Amish and contemporary romance and women’s fiction. She especially loves writing uplifting stories about second chances!

Sylvia was inspired to write about the Amish as a result of the enduring legacy of Mennonite missionaries in her life. While living with them for three weeks, they got her a library card and encouraged her to start reading to cope with the loss of television and radio, giving Sylvia a new-found appreciation for books.

Although raised in the cosmopolitan city of Montréal, Sylvia spent her adolescent and young adult years in Nova Scotia, and the beautiful countryside landscapes and ocean views serve as the backdrop to her contemporary novels.

After meeting and falling in love with an American while living abroad, Sylvia now resides in the US. She spends her days writing, hoping to inspire the next generation to read more stories. When she’s not writing, Sylvia stays busy making sure her three young children are alive and well-fed.

Elijah held my attention from beginning to end. I like that the length was fairly short, which works well when you are busy but would really like to read! However, I have enjoyed the other stories from Sylvia Price much more. I think that was mostly because the story didn't feel as realistic to me. Perhaps the drama and crime felt sensationalized, and maybe the characters felt a bit flat, with their thoughts, feelings, and actions rushed or not supported. I did not re-read to analyze my feelings toward the book, though! If you like quick reads full of crime, drama, and romance, you'll probably enjoy Elijah.

This book was different that the typical style that Sylvia Price writes. It is a stand-alone story, even though she has a short companion book that shares more of Eve’s background, it is not essential to understanding the story. That did not make it any less fantastic. She wove details together with facts that kept me interested and reading to learn more of where the plot was heading. Her story is written in a healthy, wholesome manner, even when the topic could be turned raunchy like many authors do. Our society needs more genuine caring authors that use worldly issues to share truth in a positive manner. No doubt that making "lots of money and fame" are not this author's first goal. She writes to share her talent and encourage morals and respect into a society where many are walking away from the former standards of integrity, caring for others and faith. I highly recommend this book and all other books that she has written and I have read. I don’t enjoy or believe in sharing spoilers... so I encourage you to pick up this book for an enjoyable read. I doubt you will be disappointed.

Elijah went on his Rumspringa. He headed downtown to see what was there and heard a woman in distress. He checked it out and pulled a man away from the woman, Eve. Elijah told the man to leave her alone. The next day Eve found Elijah and asked him to help her. She told him the bad guy was trying to kill her. Elijah consented after awhile. He found out Eve had been a mule for the gang. Elijah was an innocent Amish man who got into a major mess. He went home and took Eve along, hoping the community could hide her. The gang shot at the house and grabbed Eve and took off shortly after they arrived at Elijah's parents home. He said he had to go find Eve. Can he really be a match against the gang? He overheard his Maem crying and saying she feared for his life. This is another well written book by Sylvia Price. It was hard for me to lay it down.

Another Amish story by Sylvia Price but this one seems more like a fairy tale and just left me with a lot of questions. After Elijah saved Eve the first time, she immediately disappeared down the alley and yet she knew just where to find him the next day. If the alley was dark and she only saw him briefly, how did she know who he was and where he worked? Why would a detective allow a citizen to accompany him on an investigation and perhaps apprehension of criminals? Especially one that was only 18 and Amish? Elijah’s parents immediately accepted Eve. Don’t you find it strange that they didn’t question her background, age difference, and life experiences especially considering their attitude prior to Elijah leaving?

I like the way this is a story told in one book rather than a series. It is also different where it’s the story of an Amish man but set primarily outside of the Amish community. Elijah had no way to know when he helped to free Eve from the clutches of a man beating on her in an alley one day that he was entering into a world of dangers he had never imagined before. Eve is fully aware of the dangers the crime lords present but has no idea her heart will be stolen by the man who saved her in that alley. This story kept me glued to the pages as one dangerous scene gave way into the next. I enjoyed the peaceful escape when the setting turned to Elijah’s home and family but would it stay that way? This is a book that will never leave you bored or fail to pull at your heartstrings either one! It is well written and packed with excitement and love!
I received an advanced copy of this book from the author but this review is my voluntary and honest opinion.

Elijah is 18 and Amish. He’s decided to do the traditional Rumspringa we’re youths can walk away from the Amish way for a while to see what else is in the world. They then decide if they will stay away or return to the Amish way. He’s been in the city for a month when he saves Eve from people after her. She has a ex boyfriend that is in with bad people and they want her silence. Elijah saves her and they hide out together and get to know each other. She likes his quiet self and how he is and he likes being with her. Will they stay safe and find a life together?

This book is different. I did have trouble getting into the book but it could have been because I was ill while reading it.
Elijah goes on Rumspringa in the big city. He saves Eve from a gang her boyfriend is part of.
Can something delve lope between them? Can Eve be kept safe? Does Elijah confirm his faith. So many more questions to find answers to.

Elijah at age 18 decides to go to Lincoln, Nebraska for his Rumspringa. While there he worked in the Library. He went on a walk one evening and saved Eve from being harmed by a member of the gang who was her ex boyfriend. Will Elijah will be able to keep Eve safe? Will something develop between Eve and Elijah even though she is not Amish? I was always kept interested in the story line from beginning to end of the story.

I received an ARC to review: a fast, easy read that brings together the Amish faith and lifestyle and the gangster-life amongst 'Englishers'. Action, humour, romance, friendship, Faith and family all swirled together to create an enjoyable story!

Language: one instance of an abbreviation of a swear word.
Sex: none. Squeaky clean!
Triggers: mild violence, abusive relationship, human and drug trafficking.

Elijah finds more than is typical during his Rumspringa - a series of life threatening situations

he also finds himself faced with situations that might affirm his faith or give new opportunities to others - or things might get lethally destructive for multiple parties

intense drama, action and faith testimonials

Elijah Troyer and Eve Campbell meet when he is on Rumspringa a well written story that I was not putting down until I had finished reading it. There was suspense, drama, danger, villains, twists, turns, and romance. I would recommend. I received a copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

The story follows Elijah’s rumspringa and Eve’s troubled past and present. She’s in with the wrong crowd trying to get out and Elijah finds himself drawn to help her. A good story overall, a fairly quick read.

Elija is in Ruspringa time, when amish young women and men can go around, see English world, try driving, use cell phone and electrical things.
Her mother thinks her son will leave his beliefs, his community, his religion behind, after going in English world, because it is dangerous as hell.
A new serie, I'm looking forward to reading more about Elija!

I’m so wanting to have more knowledge

Although I miss my family and I do. I like to learn so I’m out on my own in the city. One night I decided to venture further out. But I was thirsty so I stopped at a convenience store and bought a soda. From there I wandered but I heard a disturbing noise in the alley. Only to see a man beating on a woman.

Rumspringa brings with it a lot of challenges. Can we say ‘welcome to the real world’ and be done with it? How does an eighteen-year-old Amish boy get involved with gangs and their activities during his rumspringa?
This one is action-packed and opens up a whole new world for Elijah.

I really was entertained by Elijah's story. I like how unique the storyline was. A story with the main character being a male member of the Amish community. I love his interactions with the English world. I liked him and Eve.
I received this as an arc from Booksprout and freely left a review.

I enjoyed reading "Elijah" with all of the problems that can happen when an Amish boy first goes to the city. Mothers always worry and this was no exception for Rebecca but all worked out in the end and justice prevailed.

Adventure and Romance

I enjoyed the adventure in this story. It actually was the central part of the story alongside the romance; a refreshing approach in an Amish setting. Above all it is sweet and clean.

105 pages in large print is not a novel. It's a short story. No depth to the plot or the characters.

Amish turned hero

Interesting story with a different twist of what can happen during Rumspringa. Although being Amish, it didn't stop Elijah from rescuing a "damsel in distress.
