In a Nutshell: A cute little children’s book about ‘love at first sight’ between a dachshund pup and a little girl. Lovely story, great word usage, whimsical illustrations. Much recommended.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Plot Preview:
“Puppy 3” (who shall later be called ‘Siggy’) isn't sure about what he is meant to do, but he likes to think about a lot of things such as his breakfast or the robins outside his window or his mummy who isn't with him during the day. When he sees a little girl come to his place, his world changes immediately.
The story is written in Siggy’s third-person perspective.
Children’s story books often have dogs, but dachshunds are not among the commonly found breeds. So when I saw this book with its quirky cover art and featuring a sausage dog, I knew I would give it a go.
This book is a prequel to introduce us to the adorable little dachshund puppy named Siggy and his little owner, a girl named Phyllis. This book was actually published AFTER the first book of the series, but I wanted to begin here. The story is complete in every way, as children’s illustrated series books often are.
Though this book is just for us to know how the two cuties met, the story still gives us a great glimpse of their personalities. Siggy’s thoughtful ponderings and Phyllis’s enthusiastic response towards the pup are so beautiful to read!
I think the book lends itself to many discussion points about dogs and their emotions, particularly about living with humans. Children might have questions about how it feels for such young pups to leave their mother and siblings, so better be ready with a convincing explanation.
The book is a bit text-intensive, so it might not be for independent young readers. But I appreciate how the font size is comfortable for little eyes and the page never feels cluttered even if it has a lot of text. The typeface is excellent, and the plain black text is at times interspersed with coloured text whenever emotions need to be stressed. The whole approach is fabulous.
The illustrations are amazing. The graphical style is so whimsical that each page feels like a work of art. I loved the sketches and the warm colour tone.
Overall, I enjoyed this cute little tale, and look forward to reading more of Siggy’s stories. If you have ever looked a dog in the eye and felt an instant connection, you will love the bond between Siggy and Phyllis.
Recommended to all doggy-loving little ones. The book ought to be great for ages 4-8 years.
4.25 stars.
Reading short stories with one of my students this month so don't be surprised if you see more of these - I haven't read literature for children in a while so it's exciting for me as well, I have to admit. This was very sweet and I love the illustrations.
When Siggy Met Phyllis is a story about a puppy named Siggy who meets and goes home with his new owner Phyllis for the first time. This story focuses on the love Siggy and Phyllis feel when they are first introduced to one another. I enjoyed this book! I thought the illustrations were intriguing and would make for good conversation in a classroom environment.
Such a cute story of how a small puppy meets his new owners and best friend. The illustrations are beautiful and the writing is easy to read. Maybe a good book when you are going to buy or adopt a new puppy/dog with your kid.
Many thanks to the author for the free copy of his book.
While it lacked the substance that the first book in the series had, the writing style and illustrations are still so lovely and charming.
I need more!
This is my favourite love story of the year 💜
I can’t wait to read more about Siggy and Phyllis 😍
I think this book really shows the relationship between a pup and their owner. It’s such a great feeling when you pick a pup and you can somehow feel that they’ve chosen you too. It’s everything you wish for.
📚Beautiful artwork, heartwarming story💟
Lovely pictures and a sincerely warm story of a puppy that's somewhat different from his rambunctious litter mates finding his forever home made this storybook a real winner for me. Brian Frederick understands the immediate bond that forms between a dog and his/her human. Really attractive addition to my children's book collection.
Thanks to the author for pointing me in the direction of this book about where Phyllis and Siggy's story really began after I read a later book in the Siggy series.
This children's book is the prequel to another book I reviewed recently (Siggy Loves Sausages)
In this one we meet Puppy 3, one of a group of dachshund puppies waiting to move to their forever home.
When a little girl Phyllis arrives to look at the puppies, she chooses puppy 3, who gets renamed Siggy.
It's a sweet story showing us how Siggy becomes part of Phyllis's family and is accompanied by very lovely illustrations.
It's an enjoyable read and I think children will love this one. Perfect book to go with Siggy Loves Sausages or to be read alone too.
Great for dachshund lovers.
