She’s been hurt one time too many — can his patience and love heal her empty places.
Cinda Bryant is done with men. They are not to be trusted, and only true to you until another pretty face catches their eye. Didn’t that happen to her mother? To her sister? To her, when the man she’d been engaged to for years did the unthinkable? So, why, does her heart skip a few beats when her shop is broken into, and the very attractive Officer Ortega is there to help?
Daniel Ortega has been waiting for the right woman to come along, and Cinda is that woman. After a painful past, he’s prayed and searched for the woman God has for him, steering clear of any others. But is Cinda too wounded to see how much he cares for her? Will the woman who is determined to come between them destroy their budding relationship?
When Daniel asks Cinda to teach a quilting class for the group of troubled teens he’s helping, he doesn’t expect her to work a miracle in their lives as well as confirming his convictions that she is his one and only. When an enemy from her past comes back to town, and Daniel’s mistake from years ago comes to light, will placing their trust in the Cornerstone of their faith be enough see them through?
Nancy J. Farrier grew up on a small farm in the Midwest amidst a close-knit family and a large extended family. She loved farm life including the animals, cooking, gardening and canning, but not so much the cleaning house part. A little-known fact is that she preferred to help with feeding cattle or mending fence than helping with housework.
In school Nancy often got in trouble in history class for hiding a fiction book in her text book to read during the teacher’s lecture. Or, she daydreamed her way through classes, writing stories in her head instead of paying attention to the teacher. English and Literature were her favorite classes.
Now, a best-selling, award winning author of historical and contemporary Christian fiction, Nancy lives in the Sonoran Desert of Southern Arizona and loves to research and include bits of history in her books. She often incorporates her love of the Southwest into her settings as the Southwest has a rich history that lends itself to fiction, and historical characters that come to life on the page.
Cornerstone is a wonderful story filled with characters that became family and some that needed to be put into their place. The characters are complex with their strong points and flaws. Cinda had an issue with trust concerning men but a beautiful designer and teacher of quilts. Officer Daniel Ortega is attractive to Cinda and seemed to be present when she was in need.
As the story unfolds, the well thought out scenes, dialogue and ups and downs of the characters kept me absorbed until the last word was read. The underlying themes of letting go, learning to trust, forgiveness, helping others, and the analogy of God being the cornerstone even in designing a quilt made this story a winner. I appreciate the way Daniel connected to young teens that didn’t have a solid home and family support. It was nice to catch up with Asia, Ian and other characters from the first book, Matching Points. Farrier is becoming a favorite author with her Christian Contemporary Stories that have you seeing the characters as friends and neighbors going through similar struggles. I look forward to the next book in the Driftwood series to see how everyone is doing that became family.
I received a complimentary e-book from the author without any obligation to write a positive review. I have shared my own thoughts with this review.
Really enjoyed this book! I was engaged, involved and loved reading every page from the beginning to the end.
I found the characters very likeable, except Mindy. They were very relatable and believable too. I shed a couple of tears. There’s a very moving/touching gesture that got me. Although primarily a christian romance novel, the story touches on some very serious issues and subjects. For example, Daniel’s tragic secret. Poor guy. Cinda goes through some stuff too. Blimey! It’s all go for these two. They overcome with God’s loving presence, His grace, His love and their faith and prayers.
The buildup to Daniel and Cinda’s romance is very sweet. Especially considering the amount of tragedies and drama going on around them, and in their own lives too. Yikes! Theirs is a real, deep and true, love. The tension and buildup to their kisses, touches and hugs felt very real. I was reliving my own experiences - through them.
Initially I didn’t realise that ‘Cornerstone’ is part of a series and I haven’t read any of the author’s other books. It didn’t take anything away from the book - for me, anyhow. I enjoyed reading the excerpt from the first book of the series, tucked away discretely at the back of the book. I also loved reading the Author’s Note and Discussion Questions. I want to read more books by Nancy J. Farrier.
Cornerstone is the first book by Nancy J Farrier I've read, and it happens to be the middle of a series and that would have made more sense if I'd read the first one before. But, the book is understandable on its own, with only a few gaps.
Cinda owns a quilt shop and went to get some thread late at night. While she was there, she finds the store had been burgled. Danny Ortega is the officer who investigates the break-in and finds Cinda knocked unconscious. He's been in love with Cinda since he moved to Driftwood Cove, but she has such bad luck with men that she doesn't trust him.
The rest of the book is about him trying to worm his way into her life and hiding an event in his past that really had no bearing on her opinion of him. In the same vein, he impresses her with his care for the troubled teens he works with and involves her in his work.
It's an easy read, but sometimes the plot drags, and maybe that's just because it wasn't the kind of book I needed at the time.
Four-ish stars.
River Ink Press and NetGalley.com provided the copy I read for this review. All opinions expressed are solely my own.
Daniel and Cinda's story was such an emotional one for me. I've never read this author before, but I enjoyed her style. I could feel the heartache that Cinda had been through previously in her life, although I think she hung on to it a little too tightly! Daniel gave her so many chances and was so patient with her. I don't think many men would have been that patient! Cinda was a blessed woman to find a man who stuck with her as long as Daniel did! However, Daniel had felt that she was the one for him and he wasn't going to give up on her, plus he was going to help her through all her issues. I loved Cinda's interaction with the teenagers that Daniel worked with. As she taught the quilting class to them, so many good things came out of it! I loved the two suspense angles too. A very good book!
I picked this book based solely on its genre and I wasn’t disappointed! I loved the characters and their personalities and their struggles and their growth over the course of the book. This book was longer than I was expecting but I loved that the conflict took longer than a page to resolve! It made it more realistic since people don’t change that fast! And I loved that it took place in a craft shop!
My only negative is that there were a lot of one sentence paragraphs and it made it a bit choppy at times. I realize this is for emphasis in writing, but every other paragraph is a bit much.
I would definitely read other books by this author!
Faith-Filled Women's Fiction This book is the second in a series, I have not read the first book. The author does a decent job of letting the new reader know past happenings. But, the new reader is aware of not knowing enough. The story is faith-filled about opening ourselves up to God's plan, forgiving others, and trusting in God to watch over us. Some might call this a romance because of the romantic elements. I find it to be more Women's Fiction because it is so much about improving oneself and be open to God. I received this ARC book for free from Net Galley and this is my honest review.
Cinda has lots of trust issues to work through before she can open her heart to love. Daniel, a police officer, loves to help troubled youth. They partner to teach the kids quilting to learn sewing skills and make something to help someone. Lots of other characters bring complications and side storylines that sometimes “chase rabbits.” Having not read the first 2 books, I was disadvantaged not knowing some back stories. Received for signing up for author’s newsletter.
This is a book you don't want to miss! It is full of emotions, drama, suspense and romance. Cinda and Daniel's story is beautifully written and will keep you turning the pages to see what happens next. This book would be perfect for a book club, it has discussion questions at the end that will really make you stop and think. I can't say enough good things about this book without letting a spoiler slip out, so I'm just going to say that this is a book that will stay with you long after you turn the last page. I can't wait for the next book in this series. I received a complimentary copy of this book and was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Once again Nancy has given us a book to touch the heart. Daniel and Cinda journey through faith and family. Each one needs the other to help sort out life and it’s many adventures. I enjoyed taking the walk through their story. Pick up a copy of Cornerstone and get ready to laugh, cry and rejoice with Daniel and Cinda.
I enjoyed this second installment to the Driftwood Cove series. I loved the plot and the characters. I appreciated the fact that it was a "clean" read, though perhaps for at least older teenagers rather than younger than 16. That is only my personal opinion. I won this book from a contest, with no promise of any further action on my part. But I'm more than happy to review it.
This story touched me on so many levels. The title Cornerstone is so central to the book and how the story unfolds. I found myself captivated by the complex characters and their complex lives. I even found myself wiping tears from my eyes by the thoughtfulness of the teen quilting group. I highly recommend this book.
I really liked this book. It can be easy to let past hurts hinder us from being able to love and to trust the right one. As we learn to trust God, He alone gives us the strength to do it. Very well done!
