Fortuna Academy #1

Fire and Brimstone

Rate this book

What exactly did dear old mum get up to before I was born?

I was supposed to be going to Harvard on a full ride. I’ve always been excellent at chemistry. Turns out my knack for chemicals was because my mum is a witch and a potions master. Did I mention she summoned a demon for a ritual and Lucifer himself came? Can I tell you how weird it is to go from card carrying atheist to finding out Satan is your dad? Harvard is out. My magic was bound when I was a baby. Apparently, now I’m going to Fortuna Conservatory instead because once I’m unbound, I can cause hell on earth. Something about being the princess of Hell.

I’m engaged to be married to who I thought was my mother’s cat and a boy from my high school I’ve nicknamed Cockblocker. Oh, he’s actually a hellcat and I hate him. I’m trying to get out of it. My high school ex is a hellhound and he’s at Fortuna with me. He’s unusually interested in who my father is and would have known what I was when we were dating. In fact, there are two hellhound leaders here that are just a little too interested in dear old dad. I’m woefully behind in everything since I was raised as human. A green haired warlock has taken me under his wing to help me with magic. A vampire tutor was arranged for me by the woman who foretold my birth.

All the answers about me came in a vision to the hellcat’s mother, Lilith. She’s the one moving pieces in the background. She’s arranging marriages, choosing my classes, and putting people in my path. She’s also avoiding giving us any answers.

Can I navigate a magical school when I have no training, not kill this hellcat I’m engaged to, manage my crushes on the warlock and vampire, and still survive with two huge hellhounds sniffing around? Something big is happening. My birth wouldn’t have been foretold if it wasn’t. I need to unlock all of my gifts as half angel half witch because whatever is going on, I’ve only scratched the surface.

I'm sorry but the writing is awful and I don't understand how this has such high ratings. RH books as a rule are always overrated, and I mean literally overrated, as in you should go in knowing they should be at least 0.3 stars lower and I know this but this one really shouldn't be anyway near 4 stars in my opinion.

The writing goes like this: "My mother was speaking to two men. They wanted me to go to some Academy. Absolutely not! They said I caused a strom. I went to tell them off. I was angry. My mother made them leave. Suddenly a man appeared out of thin air. 'How dare you come out of nowhere, where were you all my life?!' 'Sweety I am your father, I am sorry I wasn't there all your life.'"
Obviously it's not exactly like this but close enough.

I swear it's ridiculous. There are way too many periods making the sentences extremely short and so that there's no fluidity at all, not to mention it jumps from one thing to another with no rhyme or reason. Basically the writing is very, very jumbled and I'm saying this as someone who doesn't write so I'm no expert, I just read a lot, so if I'm so bothered by it I feel like so would many other people.

Then there's the fact Hayley doesn't react to things like a normal human being (yes, she's not actually human but you know what I mean) and it doesn't help that the author doesn't bother to describe her thought process in any detail, or really at all, or how she makes some questionable mental jumps to the conclusions she comes to.
I'm serious, her deduction skills are quite something: she sees two men speaking to her mother and they want her to go to their Academy. There is nothing in that situation or in the things they say that should determine that they know her mother and yet she comes to that conclusion. How you ask? Well your guess is as good as mine but it's not the only time that happens, it's quite frequent and I think it's a case of the author making the MC have instant instinctual knowlegde of things she shouldn't know because the author forgets she doesn't have these informations.
A man appears out of nowhere and she somehow knows it's her father. HOW? She's not even surprised or bothered by the fact he just teleported there. Nothing? Really?

This is just the first 10 pages. The rest is just as bad.

There's the classic and dreaded exposition that turns into an info dump.
Also it seems adjectives and adverbs as a means of description are not a thing here, no 'he said regretfully' or 'she explained with a proud smile' or 'in a furious voice'. No, we get dialogues with no indication as to how these people talk or how they feel unless they say it outright.

Ok I'm done. I didn't even finish it so I should stop ranting. Moving on. Ugh, now I've turned into a punctuation monster too. See what you've done?!

This was lots of fun! Reverse-harem paranormal romance with all sorts of supernaturals. Hayley, a half-witch, discovers just before college that she’s actually a supernatural and her father is none other than Lucifer, making her also half-Angel. This makes Harvard out, and she gets sent to magical school. Some of my favorite, snark-filled scenes were with Keene, the family cat, who is actually a hell-cat shifter, and love interest, Hayley’s destined mate (who of course, Hayley wants nothing to do with.) Also, he can project thoughts into her mind, to make things even more fun. Other awesome characters were vampire Kiernan (with a neat backstory) and warlock Azriel who she gets to know at Fortuna Academy. And then there are the hellhounds… we’ll see about those guys! This is the first in a series, and the chemistry is definitely there between the characters. I’ll definitely be reading on to see how things catch on fire as the relationships develop.

Please excuse typos/name misspellings. Entered on screen reader.

I'm rating this a 3.5..... but I didn't finish it, so take that with a grain of salt. The 3.5 is because the concept behind this book is fantastic - a premise that truly tickles me and made me want to read it in one sitting. However... the writing style left me cold. It is dialogue driven with little description or explanation - plus it is incredibly fast. Our main character, Hayley, is spoiled and immature and frankly, pretty bratty. She accepts the truth of her nature in a heartbeat, yet somehow can't accept that the guy she despises has been trying to protect her from herself for the last few years? It boggles.

Perhaps I gave up too soon, at 24%. Maybe this gets better and I was just suffering through the fluff of intro before the meat of the story caught up to the narrative. Possibly. But possibly not. Regardless, I was saddened to stop as, like I said, I really like the premise. But I just couldn't do it.

Did you like this book? Tell me why, maybe I'll pick it back up again and try once more. Does it get better?

Not sure why I even finished this book. It was bad.

The writing style was awful, there were a lot of mistakes and the sentences were kept really simple. The storyline was almost non-existent because nothing much happened. The school setting was also pretty pointless because you didn’t experience the main character learning new things. The author didn’t provide any information about the characters or the plot.

I only give these stars because I laughed out loud whenever Hayley said she just wanted to get laid. Give the girl a d***!

As for the rest of the story, I just didn't feel the characters... Hayley was funny though.

Hayley’s boring human life goes up in flames after learning she’s the devils daughter. Her plans included Harvard and saving lives, not attending a supernatural academy and collecting mates like a hobby. Pretty much until the end Hayley annoyed the hell out of me. It’s like she’s still in her prepubescent stage throwing tantrums, whining and complaining about everything. Welcome to adulthood sweetie it sucks!! For me I still am waiting to see what’s so special about her. Sure her scent is more than appealing to everyone but her personality leaves a lot to be desired for someone with so many hot and devoted guys drooling after her. The plot was fairly engaging and interesting. The audio was real quick and well done though it was a little confusing at times whose pov I was in. Off to book 2.

I was given this book for free in exchange for an honest review. As I’ve said before, I always give honest reviews whether people appreciate them or not.

This story begins with Hayley returning home from a date with Rhys. We’ll talk about him a little later. When she enters the house her mom is with two men telling her that Hayley needs to go to some witch academy and not Harvard like she planned. Yeah, telling an eighteen year old whose heart is set on going to Harvard that she suddenly can’t means fireworks are about to go off. Hayley’s mom, Melinda, keeps telling the men no when Hayley breaks in. Well, eventually the men leave when suddenly the father she didn’t know she had pops in. Her mom is a very powerful witch, but has been living as a human to protect Hayley. Her father is, wait for it, Satan! If you’re old enough, you probably said that like the ‘Church Lady’ from SNL. It turns out that Melinda and Lucifer are the perfect fairy tale love story. Unfortunately, they couldn’t let it be known who Hayley’s father was to keep her protected.

Lucifer doesn’t have any other children, so he’s an over protective daddy with his baby girl. He had her Hellcat mate as her bodyguard her entire life. Said Hellcat, Keane, had to pretend to be a housecat for years. Then, when she was old enough to start getting into teenager type of trouble like smoking, drinking, drugs and sex Keane in his human form constantly interrupted her fun. It turns out that Hayley, being the daughter of Satan, yes I like calling him that, and a powerful witch, is an über powerfull Nephilim. She just has no education about the non human side of life or how to use her powers. She does decide to go to Fortuna Academy instead of Harvard.

Hayley really doesn’t have a clue how to use magic, her hellfire or anything remotely otherworldly. She rooms with Keane, who happens to be her fiancé, gets tutored by a vampire named Kirnon and gets tutored in magic by warlock Azriel. There is apparently also an ancient prophecy lost somewhere about her and she might be able to find it in the library. The Academy has two Hellhound packs I guess. One of them headed by Gaius and the other is sort of by Rhys. Yeah, Rhys. All the Hellhounds seem to be interested in Hayley and no one knows why.

Ms. Trepagnier wrote one heck of a story here. Everything at the Academy is intense and very edge of your seat. I was afraid that the heading ‘A Reverse Harem Romance’ would be a lie, especially since Hayley was only eighteen. I’m happy it was true. There isn’t any sex, at least not yet since it’s only her first year, but there is eventually pretty intense like, and then love, between her and her three mates. Since this is the first Fortuna Academy Book I am really excited to read the second one whenever it is released.

Do not waste your i would any day choose a badly written wattpad story over this. Our protagonist earned a scholarship to harward which she had to turn down for fortuna acadmy but bruh the girl acts soo dumb and soo annoying 🙄 like I lost brain cells not just from her but her companions.

Like i hate to be mean but don't waste your money because of a pretty cover and a good summary.

The guys in her harem seems to not have a personality, it just got so annoying especially when they started talking like girls. Half of the time I had to remind myself they are the actual love intrest and not just one of her friends.

I still wanted to gave it a chance but I had to give up the books. I was skipping through chapters because it drags and there was no story just seemed like I was reading peoples thoughts and not even with structure.

Big, big, DNF. I don't know if the narrator was crap, or if the horrible writing was simply impossible to do any better than that. This sounded like it was written by a fourteen-year-old and narrated by their overly proud mother. Who the hell paid to get this narrated as an audiobook? I managed perhaps ten minutes before I was almost cringing out of my own skin.

It’s not a terrible read or anything but the timeline is too vague to truly follow. Many parts of the book where dialogue is needed is instead glossed over and retold to the reader instead of happening live on the pages in present time. I’d rather read a bit more dialogue.

In a few early parts of the book two of the guys are declaring love to the reader that they have for Hayley but unfortunately we’ve seen none of them interacting. Instead we were told about a few moment here and there in a past tense memory. That’s boring and leaves the emotional responses unclear and out of reach for the reader.

I still did like the book and I’m curious about the hellhounds and who else are going to be her mates. Because the series is only 3 books that I’m aware of I may continue the next book with the expectation that many of the moments I’d love to see and dive deeper in, will be glossed over.

This could be a 4 or 5 star read if the author would add more dialogue and just go slightly deeper in the showing vs telling style of writing.

When Hayley is 18, she finds out that her mother is a witch, Lucifer is her father, and she has powers that have been bound. She also learns that her ex boyfriend in a hell hound with an agenda, and her cat is actually a hellcat in the form of a boy she hates - and her fated mate. When she gets sent to Fortuna Conservatory, she meets a vampire and a warlock, both of whom are attracted to her. Something that Lilith has placed in play is starting to happen, and Hayley has no idea how she is supposed to be - or which way to turn. The hell hounds are after her - and she needs to unlock all of her powers and figure out how to stay alive and win. A bit of a cliff hanger ending when Keane gets poisoned - he survives, but what happens next? Lilith says Hayley has 5 mates - who are the other two? Looking forward to more!

Fantastic start to a new Academy Reverse Harem series and I absolutely loved this story. Haley finds out that her mother had secrets about her life she’s a witch who had her powers bound when she was just a baby but worse of all she finds out that she is Lucifer’s daughter and the princess of hell. Haley is also engaged to her mother’s cat who is actually one of her fated mates she meets the others when she is sent to Fortuna Conservatory instead of going to Harvard, a Hellcat, Hellhound, Warlock and a Vampire two are Haley’s ex’s from high school talk about getting thrown head first in a world that she didn’t know or even believe that existed. Fantastic story and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book and I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read.

y next ADULT 'Harry Potter' style series. Yay!! ( my other one ended - boo hoo). I am intrigued by the parents of our heroine. How will that combination work out.

You are ready to off to the college of your drams, have your future planned out and BAM!, your life changes in an instance. Now add to that , you find out that you have magic and need to go to this school. Every one has learned their magic while growing up. Not you. Add to that you can scent your mate but it is more than one. That is not the usual way it happens. I can see where that may go, but not able to quite see what is the big 'what side you are on' thing is leading to.

Looking forward to the next book.

This is my honest and freely given review. I did receive an ARC copy.

Hayley was all ready to graduate and head for Harvard but things don't go as planed. She is tapped for Fortuna Academy a place where magical beings learn to control their powers and how to survive in society. Hayley by the way, it turns out has had her powers hidden from her in hopes of being normal but when the people at Fortuna comes knocking their is nothing for her parents to do but give them back, is the daughter of Lucifer and Witch, Lilith has made a deal that a Hellcat names Keane be betrothed to her, but that is not all theres lots more surprises to come and I cant wait to read more to this series

This is a fantastic start to promising new series. Hayley’s life is tossed upside down when she finds out she isn’t going to Harvard as she wanted to, but the school she is going to is just the start of the revelations that will throw her into a strange new world. I loved the new species and the unique natures of them all, especially as they interacted so closely. The choice Hayley has ahead of her will be a hard one, though considering it’s RH it may not be. For me, it’s no surprise that I adored the nerdy vampire. Of course, the other male leads could park their shoes under my bed anytime as well… fictionally of course. 😉 The end left me dying to start the next part.

This is first of hopefully many in the Fortuna Academy series. Prepare yourself for this page turner; you will not want to put it down. Although the beginning felt a little rushed when your whole world is turned upside down, I really found myself getting into Fortuna Academy and all the characters she crosses path with. Prophesies, hellcats, vampires, warlocks – but wait there is more! Looking forward to unfolding more of the mysteries lurking around every corner of Fortuna.

This was an enchanting, entertaining, magical story about a human who finds out there is a lot more to love and life than she had been raised to believe. A lot of this tale has to do with friendship, trust, and inner strength. This is the first section of what promises to be a terrific series about witches, vampires, angels, demons, etc. If I hadn't already been a huge fan of JB Trepagnier, I would be now. It ends in an ok for now sort of cliffhanger, and I can't wait to read the next section.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

What a beginning

I really liked this book. FMC was strong, feisty, stubborn, powerful and loving. The guys were all different supes, personality and relationships all progressed separately. Loads of supernatural beings. Collage aged...yay! Villains. Plans of murder. Deception. secret prophecy. Heat. Love triangle turns/RH. Had a really interesting plot runs smoothly. I really loved the growth. It was not a right away love story. I love when they have to work for it. Slow burn. I will definitely continue this series.

I must admit I’ve had my eye in this book for a while so obviously I jumped at the chance to ARC! I thoroughly enjoyed it. Must admit like a few reviewers I found the FMC character slightly bratty! But she improved!! I like Academy books and this was no different. I like books where Lucifer has any aspect so was intrigued by this book. It has twists and turns and a bit of romance and of course a cliffhanger! I will of course read the next book

I could not stop reading this book. It was that good. I actually cried when I got to the last chapter because I didn't want it to end. I loved reading about Hayley and her life. I loved Keane and his hellcat. Azriel being an awesome caring warlock. Then theres the geeky, sexy vampire Kirnon. I just loved how the author brought all four of these guys together. I cant wait til the next one comes out.

Amazing book

I devoured this book.
JB really knows their craft.
The character development is good and the world building is enough to understand what's going on.
The slow burn is sooo good. I can't wait for the next book.

Rounded from 2.5 stars

You know how The Nutcracker and the Mouse king (short story) or Alice in Wonderland (book) or Dragon Ball Z (manga & cartoon) were these great and famous concepts that were ruined by making them into stupid movies, well that's what the author did in Fire and Brimstone.
The story itself was not so bad. It was kinda intriguing to see what the whole big plan was to be which btw was not explained in this book, then there was the thought out introductions of characters throughout the series (most of the time), and lastly was the different POVs the story was told from (which I love).
But despite all that, the bad writing just couldn't be ignored. And it's not because there were some grammatical mistakes or incorrect use of punctuation marks but because it felt like the author just dreamed up scenes and then wrote them down like she was writing a freaking report for some social science project.
It basically went like this-
"I entered my house. I found 2 men talking to my mother about me going to some academy. I yelled at them because my heart was set on Harvard. They got scared and left. My mother told me she was a witch and that I was not human. A man suddenly popped out of nowhere. I knew he was my father. I asked him where he was for the past 18 years. He told me he couldn't be around but had watched me grow up. He then told me I had attend this magical academy and that I was engaged. Then my cat turned into this guy I go to school with"
Oh and BTW this all happened in like the first chapter or so which was barely 5 pages long. Someone tells you that you are not human and you don't question their sanity or ask for proof. Some strange Man just pops out of thin air inside your house and you question him instead of calling the police or running away. Your cat turns into a guy in front of you and you don't scream, faint or question your eyes or your own sanity. Like WTF. That's total bullshit.
I mean the author should have spent more time on detailing out the scenes and giving it a more practical vibe instead of making the FMC fawn over every hot blooded guy she met or complain about being cockblocked by her fiance.
Also when you discover an entire new world you try to get some support from people you know in said world instead of being uptight because you don't like them. The story is set in college not middle school. The immaturity of the FMC during the whole situation showed. She also just shed all responsibility for her own actions.
The only saving grace was the plot of the book. I would recommend this book to those who simply love a book because it's romance or to those who have the patience to sit though the book.

It is a 261 pages Reverse Harem book and definitely a slow burn romance. Personally I found the idea behind it really interesting and I was looking forward to read more about Hayley and her mated group but the writing was just awful. That why I gave 3 stars, a lot of things were repeated like a broken disk or even names and notions in the same sentence. I didn’t dislike the multiple POVs even though from the beginning it was explained that something is wrong with one of the guys at Fortuna Academy but I will not spoiler it so you can be the judge of the book. I found everything rushed, especially her relationship with her father. I understand that it was meant to be a short story but the author could have been more attentive to the details, like setting a world, describing what was like the academy but everything was centered on the Hellhounds and what would be their plan.

Overall I gave 3* but only for the concept and the knowledge showed when explaining the different types of “creatures” that were populating Earth and the academy.
I will definitely read the sequel to know how the things will develop, especially with a potential addition and what is the real deal behind the “war” in Hell.

Until the next time,
Isa💫
