Positive Discipline, developed by Jane Nelsen and based on the work of Alfred Adler and Rudolf Dreikurs, is designed to help young people become responsible, respectful, and resourceful members of their communities. In this book, Nelsen and Chip DeLorenzo bring together Montessori and Positive Discipline for the first time, offering a methodology for addressing behavior in the classroom that is consistent with the core Montessori belief of respect for the child. Nelsen and DeLorenzo argue that preparing the social[1]emotional environment is just as important—and as critical to normalization—as preparing the physical environment, and provide tips for creating that environment, one that engenders cooperation, contribution, and mutual respect. Whether you teach toddlers or adolescents, or anywhere in between, you will find life-changing tools in Positive Discipline in the Montessori Classroom. You’ll learn how • effectively set and maintain limits with children• foster children’s self-regulation and responsibility• encourage open communication with your students• help children attain a sense of belonging and significance• And much more
This book synthesized a lot of things I knew about into one program that I know I can follow. The author offered explanations, examples, and grace for mistakes that make me excited to get started this fall. Everything I believe in my heart about children, Montessori education, and discipline was articulated in this book. Love it and plan to read it again as the school year starts!
Everyone in Montessori needs this book! It is insightful and walks you through every skill step by step. Game changer for teachers, children and schools.
FIVE STARS ALL AROUND. This book covers so many topics in a cohesive way that are helpful and effective. I will be rereading this book many times and implementing a lot of the tools into my classroom.
I have added this book to my “must read every year” list. I also plan to reference it on a regular basis during the school year. This is an excellent book for Montessori guides.
