When 16-year-old Crispin stumbles across Kennedy’s Emporium, he’s transported into a magical world of the impossible. Unicorns, snow globes where the snow never stops falling, bubbles that never pop, paper fireworks that explode and refill, and most magical of all—Garrett Kennedy, youngest son of the owner, who makes Crispin’s heart leap in new and exciting ways. Crispin promises he’ll never forget Garrett, but when he loses Garrett’s gift of a jewelled bee, he also loses his memories of the time he spent with him.
Eight years later, the bee is returned to Crispin, along with memories of Garrett and his amazing world. But how can any of what Crispin now recalls be possible?
And yet…

What if it wasn’t a dream?
What if Kennedy’s Emporium exists?
What if magic is real?
What if Garrett’s been waiting, wondering why Crispin never came back?

And what if Crispin takes a chance on the best thing that’s ever happened to him, assuming he can find Kennedy’s Emporium again?

Barbara Elsborg lives in Kent in the south of England. She always wanted to be a spy, but having confessed to everyone without them even resorting to torture, she decided it was not for her. Volcanology scorched her feet. A morbid fear of sharks put paid to marine biology. So instead, she spent several years successfully selling cyanide.

After dragging up two rotten, ungrateful children and frustrating her sexy, devoted, wonderful husband (who can now stop twisting her arm) she finally has time to conduct an affair with an electrifying plugged-in male, her laptop.

Her books feature quirky heroines and bad boys, and she hopes they are as much fun to read as they are to write.

Before I begin, I must acknowledge the cover; it's exactly what I see when I envision Crispin and I love it when my mind's eye is in tune with the authors. I love the title too! "What if?" is perfectly apt for this magical story. Now I'd like to share a few things, but the plot is so intricately wound there's more that I can't share than things that I can. Let's see if I can tiptoe around spoiler bombs...
First off, this is the second book in the Lost and Found series, but it does not include the same main characters. They are part of the same 'world', but the connections don't click until later in the book. Or maybe that was just me? Ha. Second, this isn't your typical sugary-sweet holiday story. It has more Nicholas Sparks vibes than Hallmark. However, it tugged my heartstrings and the corners of my mouth upwards all the same. And finally, there's another time shift here; we meet the boys when they are teenagers and then skip ahead to the future. As usual, the flashback is full of important bits. The cover caught my eye, the title brought the hook and the blurb snared me completely. What is this bee? Why is it so special? How is it linked with Crispin's memories? All good questions and with a little page time, all are answered.

The majority of Crispin's twenty-four years haven't been kind or easy. He loves to write and finds this escape a necessity. His family is small and difficult. His brother is a bully and his mom is wicked. At least his dad is lovely. His gifted fingers not only pen fun fantasy but play the piano brilliantly. It's convenient for his mom because she has a free entertainer for her lavish parties. During her latest grand event, Crispin meets his brother's new girlfriend. Oddly enough, she is wearing an identical bee charm that looks suspiciously like the one his brother stole from him years before. Unlike his brother, she is good-natured and returns the bee to Crispin. He never imagined he would wake the next morning with his missing memories returned. He's not crazy. He wasn't hallucinating. The magical emporium was there! And Garrett, oh! He was waiting for him. Could he possibly still be there after all these years?? *whispers* You should probably find out...

I'd rather not tell you much more. Except for how I felt. I was heartbroken and hopeful. I cheered and I sneered. And I laughed and laughed some more. Patience is key. You won't know everything right away and that's okay. I was caught up in the magic, desperate for the miracle I knew was coming. Well, at least I wished was coming. I loved Crispin and his rose-colored glasses. I loved Garrett and his determination. I loved the magical aspect. I loved some of the family. I loved familiar faces returning to the limelight. The first book in the series isn't a requirement but adds an extra layer of awareness. And if you've read Elsborg holiday stories from years before, you're in for a fun surprise!

Beware of: Hold steady, in due time you will see. A mishmash of feels, this is not a simple task. And head over heels, young love that will stand the test of time.

This book is for: If you're looking for something off the beaten path this holiday, why not try this extraordinary tale? What do you have to lose?

2.5 stars ⭐️ This story was fine but didn't work out as well as the previous book which I really liked from the start to the end. The characters, both Crispin and Garret were great, and I felt their insta-love but I don't know, something was missing in the story. I was bored to death, and the story couldn't hold my attention. I think it's a me thing since most readers did enjoy this story.

I think my issue is mainly because there was a lack of world-building. Plus, I want more angst between our MCs. They both were so sweet and great together but I didn't feel their intensity.

Overall, this was an okay read. But I skimmed a few chapters to read the epilogue. 😬

Just wonderful! ❤️🥰❤️

So very original ...
and that's something that is nigh on impossible to find, especially in the m/m genre where every trope is done over and over and over and ... primarily why I'm reading less and less in the genre.

SO freakin' refreshing to find something with such an original plot! 😊

Oh, those expectations! What if Ms. Elsborg followed the path she mapped in the plot and did a mighty good job at the start of the book. There was it, that golden fairytale vibe and a magical toy store which appears only in December and where an unlikely teenage love has its start, only to be followed by years of separation because one of them is to remain at the store and the other one made to forget what happened; The suspected sweetness broken by cruel brothers and a cold mother. Didn't matter that those were more stereotypes than characters, that's completely okay in fairytales. Could have been the holiday story I was looking for … could have been but wasn't because then Crispin and Garrett meet again and the story did its first turn from fairytale into fairy-tale with the addition of a tumor.

Now those support character stereotypes became objectionable but Ms. Elsborg kept it at bay with cute wit and fun times during reconnection. Even while it's a speedy love at first sight, it's obvious they are meant to be and it's fun to watch. However with fairies in play and different realms to deal with I would have expected some kind of world building but I didn't get it. At that point it might have not been really necessary because the reconnection happened completely in the human realm and they mainly had to deal with Crispin's family but that first turn wasn't the last and eventually that missing wold building became a big void swallowing the last interest I still managed to hold. Didn't even matter anymore that the final conclusion seemed like the start of a new story far away from its fairytale beginning. Latest after the 2nd story turn I wasn't even sure anymore that I should file it as a Holiday read. That most of it happened during the Holidays might have been totally coincidental. So, not what I expected.

Barbara Elsborg’s spectacular Lost and Found series continues with What If?. Taking place in the same universe, a few of the characters in Double Trouble make a brief appearance, but you can definitely read either as a standalone.

What amazed me from the very first page of What If?, is what an incredibly different feel this novel has from Double Trouble. Believe me, I enjoyed every moment of the intensity in Double Trouble. The danger and excitement make for one wild ride! But What If? completely melted my heart.

A hurt/comfort story of the highest level, Crispin’s tale is truly miraculous and I literally couldn’t put this book down. Barbara Elsborg is a master at creating atmosphere, and the way she paints this young man’s life is exquisite. From his lonely London flat, to the wonder he feels inside Kennedy’s Emporium. His intense loneliness, and helplessness over his life, to his acceptance of his fate. Gah, it’s simply perfection. And holiday magic completely permeates this book. It's absolutely lovely.

Following fast on the heels of What If? is The Inbetweeners, which is also excellent. I believe Ms. Elsborg has promised at least one more book in this marvelous series, and in the meantime I’m tackling her impressive backlog of paranormal romances. I’m currently reading Archangel’s Assassin, and I’m loving it!

Crispin is twenty-four and enters his parent’s home, a miserable, emotionally cold home, for diner.
He can’t believe his eyes, eight years ago his brother grabbed his ‘bee’ away from him and threw it into the lake, now he sees it again, on the neck of his brother’s girlfriend.

Eight years ago something extraordinary happened to him, he disappeared for twenty-four hours. Now he can remember what happened, but can’t tell a soul.

Letting Crispin into his magical world got Garrett remote and he has to return to his own realm for the next five years. He escapes and turns to Crispin, he can’t leave him. What they have is special!

So much hurt and so much fun.

Garrett wants to find a way to keep Crispin forever.
Meeting Crispin’s family made Garrett cringe, his mother and brother are horrible, thank goodness Crispin’s father is on team Crispin.

There’s an impending disaster, for Crispin, and now also Garrett, with a devastating outcome.

And then… the gates of magic opened widely. It wouldn’t be a fantastic fantasy story if there weren’t any fantastic magic, would it?

In both realms, are characters who are against them and try to trick them.
Crispin and Garrett are each other sanctuaries, in all the chaos.

The author took me into a beautiful, emotional, funny at times hard, fantasy world. The two main characters are more than engaging, they stole my heart at first sight. The story is amazingly captivatingly written, I laughed and got angry, it was sweet and harsh, it had all the feels and was so mesmerizing. This story had a bit of a slow start, it was captivating but I wondered where it was heading. Approaching the end it got clearer. We are confronted with magic, unconditional love, romance, fun and sexy time, supportive and less supportive characters, action, adventure, delightful humor, and a very good ending, thank you very much. I wouldn’t survive with anything less.

4.25 stars from me for this exceptionally Christmassy 🎄🎄❄❄☃️☃️ 🎅🎅 read from one of my fave authors. Took me a while to get into it, but then as they say, I was hooked!! It also helped that one of my fave areas of the UK featured quite strongly in the storyline...the Trough of Bowland in Lancashire, although Crispin and Garrett nearly perish from the weather there.

I suppose this one could be read as a standalone if you were that way inclined cause characters from Double Trouble only appear towards the end of this particular story, but all sorts of other characters also get a mention...all from stories Barbara Elsborg has written that I've read and rated very highly Bloodline, Not Over Yet and Winterworld.

Many thanks Barb and Merry Xmas!! 💕💕

Absolutely fantastic!

This book has proven to me again the wonderful story telling ability of this author. From the well written enjoyable plot to the strongly developed main characters and the pacing that flowed along perfectly, all balancing together to create a book that I couldn’t put down.
Crispin and Garrett had to overcome some obstacles but their love for each other prevailed, even if at times my eyes got a bit leaky - feels, lots of feels. But there’s also some witty banter between them that had me laughing out loud and some beautifully tender moments all of which had me cheering them on towards their well deserved HEA.
This is the second book in the series but all can be read as a standalone. To quote the author, “They’re linked but not interdependent.”
I highly recommend this book and the first in the series also.

I cried… more than once and also not towards the end of the books. Don’t know felt like usually the tears in a book are towards the end of the book but this was not the case here. There was also kind of a lot going on. I loved the guys and loved the story but something was missing for me to consider this a home run.

Also I love B. Elsborg’s sense of humor. But I am starting to feel like all her MCs have the same jokes and ultimately it feels like they are all the same person from one book to the next! I enjoy the sassyness and it makes me laugh but also makes me feel like all of the guys are the same just with a different name from one book to the next.

If you follow Barbara’s writing you will know you are heading for a rollercoaster ride of emotions. She is a master of gutt punches, twists and turns. Her book will make you laugh and cry. And even though you know the book will have a happy ending. You really wonder if and how this is going to happen.

Well let me tell you, Barbara has outdone herself with What If?

Gosh Poor Crispen has lived his life feeling as though he doesn’t belong. Partly because his mother is so cold, almost out nasty towards him. His brother is not much better. The only person he has in his life that matters to him is his father.

Now there is a story all of itself. Add the fact Crispin is in reprieve of a Tauma in the brain to his life, and yet he still a positive and kind person.

Garrett is a fairy that visits our world once a year in December. Though his life is nowhere near as bad as Crispen’s. He does have his own battles and an equally nasty brother. Oh and a suitor to be his partner, who he has no intention of dating let alone marrying.

The two first meet outside Kennedy’s Emporium where Garrett and his family work in December. Only fairies are supposed to see and be able to enter the Emporium, but somehow Crispen enters.

But the two do not meet again for 8 years and Crispen does not recollect any details of what happened while he was in the Emporium.

But by a little luck and magic Crispen manages to find the Emporium and Garrett. They are determined to be together, until Crispen gets some devastating news.

Garrett is determined to fight the odds and is willing to break the fiery rules to take Crispen on a chase into moorlands in a race against time.

As I have mentioned earlier Barbara has turned up the emotions in this story, about halfway through I even found the emotions were getting to me deep in my heart. I even wondered if there was going to be a happy ever after. Yes, I know it is a paranormal romance novel, and should end happy, but I was so involved in the story, I kind of forgot that little rule in writing. Don’t

misunderstand me, the story is not doom and gloom. Both characters attitudes ensures that there is plenty of love and laughter along the way.

I have never been so emotionally invested in two characters as I was with Crispen and Garrett. Both young men showed grit and determination, even when the odds were stacked against them, they never gave up. I found myself reflecting on this in my own life and it made me feel so privileged and rich in the love I grew up with in my family.

A very well thought out story, with detailed world building and the magic was well just magical (pun intended.) Seriously though the magic in the story felt real and believable. Sometimes writer twist and turn the magic to suit the plot. Not in this book, there is no sudden changes in how the magic works. I really felt like I was with the guys throughout the story from the busy streets of London, the magical Emporium, to the moors in mid-December, and even in fairyland.

Have your box of tissues at hand It is a Barbara Elsborg story after all. Be prepared for a late night or two, as it is hard to put the book down. And get cuddled up with a hot chocolate, to enjoy Crispen and Garretts story.

I am so asking santa to make Barbara write a sequel to this book!

What if you lost a day and could not remember it? And then what if you found the catalyst to unlock those memories and it leads on an adventure out of your wildest imagination?

This is what happened to Crispin Walsh and he has now remembered that day and reconnected with the boy he spent that special day with, Garrett Kennedy. Crispin is imaginative, creative, and believes in living life to the fullest but is often held back by his family. Garrett is a friendly, caring dreamer. He feels locked into his own situation and does not really have a place in Crispin's world.

But finding ways of spending time together is not easy and not without consequences. And no matter how they try to make it work, it seems like there are outside influences or complications getting in their way. They seem to be on borrowed time with uncertain futures, unsure allies, and certain enemies. Along the way, they are getting to know the nuances of themselves and each other while finding their inner strength and determination.

This is an emotional and magical NA paranormal love story and adventure about faith, family, fairies, and fate. Can love really conquer all?

This can be read as a stand-alone, but there is a bit of character crossover with Double Trouble.

What If? is one of those books that has such an interesting premise that you cannot help but be drawn into the universe and storyline. The second book in the Lost and Found series, this story takes place in the same universe that Double Trouble does, but has minimal overlap and can be enjoyed as a standalone.

Crispin and Garrett live very different lives in different worlds but they share a spark that has lingered for years. I loved getting to know both characters and their backstories. The author does a fabulous job at creating a complex, interesting world that transports me but was also easy to follow along. Although the romance between Crispin and Garrett has a love-at-first-sight undertone, their emotional connection and chemistry made it easy to root for this couple and never doubt their commitment.

The writing in What If? is well-balanced- full of details, sweet romantic moments, well-developed characters, and smooth transitions between dialogue and an interesting story that made for a unique and pleasurable read. I would recommend this book and series to readers who enjoy interesting tales of fantastic worlds that stretch their imagination and deliver some adventure.

4.5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫

I love the world that Barbara Elsborg has created with the Lost and Found series, this one can be read as a standalone, but they are so good you should definitely read them all.

The main character Crispin hasn't had the best of lives, his mother is dismissive of him and doesn't appear to care about him at all, his brother is awful, and only his father has been there for him. He has also struggled with his health and this plays a part in What if? and in the decisions, he makes and where they lead.

Garrett is from Faerieland and works out of a magical Christmas emporium that only exists a couple of months a year. He has responsibilities on which he puts his own spin, his father is a good man, but his brother, just like Crispin's is awful and dangerous.

Eight years before Crispin stumbled across the shop and met Garrett, the two of them felt instantly connected but due to Crispin not remembering until now, they haven't been able to reunite.

There is a magical bee, soulmates at first sight, heartache, a quest and danger as well as plenty of romance and sweetness between Crispin and Garrett.

Tar, a character from the first book doesn't meet Garrett and Crispin until the end of the book. I was hoping to see more of the characters from Double Trouble, but it wasn't to be. I know we see them in book 4 Broken Things, which is fabulous, but my next read is The Inbetweeners book 3 and I can't wait to head back into this world.

Another Absolutely Amazing book from Barbara.

This author delivers EVERY SINGLE TIME, her story telling and world building are just amazing i can't find fault with any books that she writes, Barbara is a one click author for me and this story is why i love her books so much.

Crispin and Garrett met when they were sixteen in a Christmas toy shop that Garrett should not of been able to enter with it being a shop for supernaturals. Eight years later Garrett forgets he had met Crispin until a chance with a little bee that Crispin gave him all them years ago which he forgot as his brother stole it from him then told him he threw it away, but it comes into his possession and that changes everything for these two lovely souls.

There was so much to learn about what Garrett really was and the obstacles that they went through to get to there hea it will have you routing for this couple throughout. There was some light laugh out loud moments and some tender moments through the whole book that will leave you with a huge smile on your face at the end. This is the second book in this series but they both can be read as standalones. Brilliant again from this super talented author.

4.5 stars. A great start to the book as a mystery begins of Crispin disappearance 8 years ago and a bee. A magical world for Garrett and Crispin in a brief moment they share which Crispin has no memory of now.
Garrett was trapped into world I felt for him wanting to see Crispin again.
Scenes playout and the story becomes one of adventure and danger oh and a mystery for Crispin. I found like their families treating Crispin and Garrett badly.
includes magical powers, faerie world, cancer, secret, not as it seems, laughter and sadness and more.
A great book to the Lost and Found Series.
Garrett was late home but he sees someone he couldn't believe that was across the road. But fate has other plans for the moment.
Crispin 24 years didnt get along with his family especially his brother.

World building and sweet romance

Barbara Elsborg's Lost and Found series kicks up depth and pace with this second installment of magic and passion. Crispin and Garrett come from seriously different worlds, but from their first meeting, it's obvious that their connection is mire than a passing fancy. One of the most interesting things about this book is how it balances the fantasy world of Faerie and the mundane world. The author creates characters whose believability lies in the fact that each is flawed in some way. Yet even the most tragic failings have their reasons, and that's what gives the story dimension and texture. Of course, there's plenty of steam to up the apoeal. You don't HAVE to read Double Trouble first, but you'll add to your delight if you do!

I flipping loved this book and world. Barbara story telling is like no other. She takes us right into the book with humans and faeries and “What if’s”.

Crispin and Garrett’s love and connection surly do stand the rest of time. They were young when they meet and felt that connection until it was taken away. When they remeet years later, it is still there.

I adore their banter, their journey, their honesty, and fight for each other despite some awful family
Members and time running against them.

The epilogue was so amazing. I am just swooning over
These guys. I need more more and more.

This is truly a wonderful and magical world the author has created. It is definitely for fans of paranormal/fantasy stories, ones that come with terrific world-building, soul-deep romance, and hilariously fun times! Crispin and Garrett have a world setting them apart, but when Garrett finally finds Crispin again, nothing can tear these two apart. They have the kind of love that carries through anything and everything, their hope and devotion for one another never fading. This is a beautiful story with an enchantingly captivating ‘what if’ premise. And the epilogue? So very swoonworthy!

This story really tugged at my heartstrings as I read. I knew it should have a HEA but it didn’t feel as if it could, which kept me anxiously turning the pages well into the night. Crispin was so in need of someone like Garrett to bring sparkle into his life.

If I have any complaints, and tbh with a Barbara Elsborg book, that’s rare, it’s that I could have done with more of Garrett’s world pov. But it’s a small quibble. I have no doubt I’ll re-read this. I bought the paperback too, because the cover is so gorgeous.

I love Barbara Elsborg's paranormal world. "What If" continues in that wonderful paranormal world that she has built since "Jumping In Puddles".

(However "Jumping In Puddles" is MF. So if you're only interested in MM, then you can start in the second Norwood series, "Bloodline". Though they're all standalones.)

As with everything she writes, "What If" has me engrossed with its engaging plot and wonderful characters. The story gave me all sorts of emotions - I cried, I laughed, I got mad.

You definitely should read this!

What if indeed

What a beautiful gift of “what if”. Crispin meets Garrett when he’s sixteen and then is unable to remember how or what. Years later a bauble unleashes the forgotten memories. They meet again and a whole series of “ what ifs” occur. I don’t want to spoil this lovely story. Just know there is magic, chemistry and some family members you will want to bitch slap into tomorrow. It all works well together.

This book was sadistic. From the blurb I was expecting a love story, a romantic story. What i got instead were abusive and monstrous characters. Father’s punching their own children. Brothers mentally torturing their own siblings. All I wanted was for both the families of the two mc two be smashed on the head for their evil and abusive behavior and then sent to prison. Really did not enjoy reading this book, it felt vile, tainted. I think the blurb was deceiving

A heartbreaking and meticulously written addition to the Lost and Found series. Hitting on much different themes as the first book in the series, What If? delves into grimmer subject matter and pulls on your heartstrings and plays with your emotions until finally finding a resolution that works.
Looking forward to a third book in this series.

Sweet and funny — a paranormal romcom

I really enjoyed the sassy dialogue, the sweet emotions, and the various background side plots. This was a charming story that did not feel too saccharine nor too cliche. The sad parts were not too sad and the happy bits were not over the top. Excellent balance of romance and adventure throughout the story.
